"(1) This is absolutely the first stage in a coordinated plan to deplatform everyone on the right. It’s not really about Alex Jones at all."

"(2) Aside from its free-speech* implications, which are serious indeed, this also looks like an antitrust violation: Media companies, which compete with Jones for eyeballs, colluded to get other media companies to shut him down. Were I Jones, I’d file an antitrust suit. This is more than arguably conspiracy in restraint of trade (and possibly a conspiracy to deprive him of civil rights). (3) This is proof that we need to break up these big tech companies, which exercise way too much power via their near-monopolies. That they coordinate in the abuse of those monopolies only makes it clearer."

Writes Glenn Reynolds. Here's the footnote, which deals with something I've written about on this blog a lot over the years:
* Note that I say “free speech” and not “First Amendment.” The First Amendment only limits government, but “free speech” is — or at least until very recently was — a broader social value in favor of not shutting people up just because we don’t like their ideas or politics. As for the “private companies can do what they want,” well, that’s not the law, or the custom, and hasn’t been for a long time. It’s especially not true where the companies have, as these companies have, affirmatively represented to users and shareholders that they don’t discriminate based on viewpoints.
Here's a post from last March where I collected a lot of my older posts about free speech values extending beyond the rights we hold against government.

Glenn writes "Were I Jones, I’d file an antitrust suit." Is Jones working on that? He said (via MacDailyNews):
I’ve had a lot of top lawyers call me today and say, “Alex, we need to sue Apple. We need to sue all these groups that clearly are involved in cut and dry antitrust activities, working with other companies to delist you and block you from the marketplace of ideas, so, then when they demonize you, you don’t have a way to respond to them and they can destroy you and then, with that model, move on against everybody else.”

Please read Glenn's footnote and the old post of mine that I linked to. We are well aware of the limits of the First Amendment, but free speech values extend beyond that limit and could be embodied in new legislation, plus there is the matter of putting political and economic pressure on the private companies, and there is an antitrust argument. You don't have to lie back and take it!

Now, if your argument is that Apple/Google/Facebook SHOULD be allowed to do what it wants, you need to make and argument about why.

And who knows who else. Possibly we will hear about his payment processor and web hosting company and possibly his bank.

As also with the coordination of MSM stories. They post the same or extremely similar stuff within minutes sometimes, and use the same headlines, and ask the same questions.

Its impossible to conclude otherwise.

Hence my conclusion that this is an organized political machine at work.

Which is why any ridiculous lawsuit like the one that your creepy buddy Glenn Reynolds raises will fail.

Let's see if BrainFight Info Warrior can withstand the lawsuits being brought against him by the Sandy Hook victims' parents, first.

All three companies can make a strong and credible prima facie case that being associated with as much notorious misinformation as Info Warrior and Sandy Hook survivor harasser Jones the conspiracy-mongerer spreads is detrimental to their business. No information technology company will be forced to host the speech of someone who consistently, deliberately lies to and injures people for a living. The number of times he's been forced to retract under threat of suit proves what a brand-wrecker he is. A company would be bonkers to want to associate with that whacko. And that's why he relies on funding air time with his own equally bullshit "male vitality" supplements.

However we now have to deal with a stream of facts that cannot be reconciled within old systems.

A few days ago there was a fascinating bit that came up about the Santa Cruz hippie that had to digest the fact that she was on the same side as the FBI (as an anti-Trump institution). Her system could no longer organize facts her old way. Mind was blown.

This little incident has made me think again about James Damore. The tech companies really ought to adopt neutral principles that err on the side of free expression; if they do not, they risk inviting conservatives to push for more regulation of their industry or to advocate aggressive antitrust enforcement. After Facebook's recent troubles, culminating in a market debacle, they really can't afford to alienate more people. There's already a cultural backlash against social media, and it's going to get worse.

Though on some level I understand why tech companies are taking sides. They figure net neutrality will be brought back when Democrats are in power, so might as well win some prog goodwill now before that happens. They're all destined to become quasi-government "companies."

I agree with Glenn Reynolds and with Ann. I've been wondering about what can be done about this.

Youtube has been quietly removing people that they disagree with for some time.

Alex Jones is kind of a crazy character but really if you're going to disallow his speech then you're going to eventually get around to disallowing the speech of everyone who isn't left-wing and eventually there are going to be some pretty tight restrictions on even what the left can say, although that's kind of a redundant statement, given the nature of the left and that this is already true. But it's the case, that if we could only remember, there are so many examples of this sort of thing in our past.

If we can remember accurately, and boy that is the hard part, societies where only the so-called consensus can be said are the norm, except that there were few enough people back then that even so people still had a lot of actual freedom. But in this day and age, with all our technology for collecting data on people, you have no idea how terrible the punishment will become for saying anything counter to the so-called consensus.

Enforcing Our Community Standards
We believe in giving people a voice, but we also want everyone using Facebook to feel safe. It’s why we have Community Standards and remove anything that violates them, including hate speech that attacks or dehumanizes others. Earlier today, we removed four Pages belonging to Alex Jones for repeatedly posting content over the past several days that breaks those Community Standards. Easy to explain.

It's now August in an election year.

The left wants to de-platform all conservative groups (sort of an IRS/TeaParty manuever for the out of govt powers but not out of commercial power).

Start with infowars (who can disagree?) and then accelerate the shadowbanning of all conservative activist and social groups followed by explicit banning.

The Infowars app is rising in the Apple store's rankings after a number of other major digital platforms cracked down on its content.

The app has surged in popularity in recent days from the 47th to the 4th most popular Apple store news app in the United States. That position places Inforwars over CNN, Fox News and The New York Times's apps, according to app analytics site, App Annie.

In Google Play's app store for Android, the Infowars app currently sits at the 11th spot for the most popular U.S. news app, up from its previous spot at 31st.

The app lets users access Infowars videos and articles as well as the Infowars store.

Apple and Google Play are still allowing users to download the app but a number of other platforms have booted Infowars and its founder Alex Jones, including YouTube and Facebook, citing content that violated their policies.

The fact that Owens was reinstated makes it even worse. They thought they nailed a rightie, but rather than banning them both (which I think would not have been fair to Owens, she was merely drawing their attention to a violation in need of correction), or banning Jeong (which would be consistent with their professed principles), they backed down. They simply couldn't bring themselves to swing the banhammer at Jeong.

The SCOTUS has moved away from aggressive antitrust enforcement. That happened about 20 years ago when more direct evidence was required beyond “conscious parallelism” but that matters in a different context: horizontal competition.

This is more akin to illegal vertical constraint, or perhaps even group boycott. Group boycott was deemed illegal during the civil rights movement.

IOW, this has legs but it might be a case of first impression.

The common carrier VS. liability for what is not deleted is a bigger near-term threat.

1) Commission polls that say Democrats are heading.

3) Approach companies using the line, "That's a nice Facebook you've got there. Wouldn't want to see anything happen to it."

4) Apply media "blue wave" narrative repeatedly to all relevant companies in order to silence any Democrat opposition.

Here comes his brilliant intellectual clincher: "Why don't you read a book!"

I would never dream of offending such an upstanding man as yourself with such a suggestion, ST.

Everyone knows your ignorance comes directly from all those books you haven't read and that trying to read them would only make you sound even stupider.

You're welcome!

exiled: "But you know it won't be. Paltrow, with her steamed vag..."

This poses a quandary for the lefties.

If the islamic supremacists the dems advocate for and defend had their way, Female Genital Mutilation and Burka's would rule the day.

How in the world can the Inga's of the world square that circle with their steamed vag's?

One wonders....
