The battering Trump is taking in the press is not hurting him.

From Real Clear Politics (which averages the polls):

I invite you to offer your own explanations, but I'm reading "As Critics Assail Trump, His Supporters Dig In Deeper" (NYT)...
In interviews across the country over the last few days, dozens of Trump voters, as well as pollsters and strategists, described something like a bonding experience with the president that happens each time Republicans have to answer a now-familiar question: “How can you possibly still support this man?”...

Republican voters repeatedly described an instinctive, protective response to the president, and their support has grown in recent months.... Mr. Trump has also retained support across a range of demographics other than the working-class voters who are most identified with him....

[A]s another immigration crisis of his own making smoldered this past week, critics inside and outside Mr. Trump’s party predicted another devastating, irremediable low point in his presidency. Yet many Trump voters said that they no longer had the patience or interest to listen to what they see as another hysterical outburst by Democrats, Republican “Never Trumpers” and the media....

For many Republicans, the audio of children sobbing at a migrant detention center barely registered, because these voters don’t pay attention to the left-leaning and mainstream media that have covered the family separation crisis far more than their preferred channel, Fox News....

Others said they saw a ploy by the president’s enemies to obscure news that was more favorable to him, like the internal Justice Department investigation that recently uncovered evidence of F.B.I. officials speaking disparagingly of Mr. Trump....
Then there's "Trump Loses His Superpower/The president’s tweets have been powerless against images of migrant children in the news media," by Jack Shafer (Politico) — which I feel like calling As Trump Supporters Resist the Assailing of Trump, His Antagonists Dig In Deeper:
The border story couldn’t have arrived at a worse time for Trump. After the inspector general’s report on FBI handling of the Clinton email investigation came out on June 14, Trump seized on it with his demagogic tentacles and started to score points with his misguided supporters about how the deep state had attempted to block his election....

But... the border story nullified Trump’s howling about the IG report and the evil James Comey. Nobody wanted to hear about the IG anymore; they wanted to hear Trump justify the border policy. Trump was now facing a story that couldn’t be diluted or contaminated with Twitter truculence....

For three years now we’ve been told that nothing bad sticks to Trump, that his mind games and double-talk make him invulnerable to the protestations of the righteous. That no matter how tight his detractors tie the knot, he’ll always slip out of it. This week we learned differently. Trump can reliably win the battle if it’s fought with words. But against images and descriptions of distraught and traumatized children and parents, Trump’s superpowers fail. If you want to beat Trump, hit him in the heart because he doesn’t seem to have one. He’s a man with zero emotional intelligence.
So... hit him in the thing that he doesn't have. Is that a Zen koan? I don't know. Jack Shafer just sounds... truculent. It's inspiring my instinctive, protective response. Shafer ought to see how battering Trump stimulates that feeling... but it would take some... emotional intelligence.

All peoples everywhere respond well to "this kind of stuff", if it is permitted to emerge. Its also very much contingent. "This kind of stuff" is fine, perhaps, for some but not others, no?

This is a human universal. All elites everywhere seek to constrain thought and speech within safe channels (or safe from their point of view), else their power is too easily threatened.

Human nature.

Fisked from several different commenters:

"I’ve seen reports that over 90% of all press reports on Trump are negative while the reporters still claim to be unbiased."

Perhaps an accurate unbiased view of Trump can only be negative.

"...everyone can see the improvements in the economy and the foreign policy successes...."

Really? What are they? I hear Trump claiming great successes, but what has actually been accomplished? Other nations are reacting to Trump's talk of tariffs with statements of intent to implement their own tariffs, which could lead to a harmful trade war. "Lowest unemployment ever?" Even if that claim is true, it doesn't prove employment is high. Unemployment stats are just a measure of how many people are claiming unemployment benefits or who are looking for jobs. Once discouraged job hunters simply stop looking for work, and once one's unemployment benefits are used up, those people are no longer counted among the unemployed, and the stats on "unemployment" go down. To the degree more people are working, are they substantial jobs with benefits and good salaries and career tracks...or are they low-paid service jobs with poor or no benefits? These are the stats that tell the tale. And, how we do know when such improvements in employment rates as are valid stop being the result of the Obama administration and start becoming a result of Trump's? Even the deal with North Korea--which will be a good thing if it is actually consummated--hasn't yet been finalized.

"God help us if the left ever gets power again."

When has a "left" ever held power in America? "Left" is not a synonym for the Democrats, and the Dems are certainly not "left."

"The Left (sic) offers nothing practical in return for ditching Trump."

This is true. Trump is the fruit of Obama's betrayal of his promises to bring "change" and "hope." He just brought more of the same. Hillary was seen--and ran--as a continuation of Obama, and voters who got burned before said, "NO!"

So, you could rebut my rebuttal of Brooks.

This is exactly right.

I would only change it slightly. He is the id of white america. Or at least the marginalized white america that bought the lies of the Democratic party and the media and voted against their own self interest.

There are two sides in this conflict. Make no mistake it will become an even more dangerous conflict.

Do you know anything about the leading candidate in the Mexican Election? He is advocating that everyone has the right to come to the United States and that we have no right to stop it. He is advocating that they millions just "rush" the border and pour into America. He wants all of the poor in Mexico and Central America to just push their way in and that we don't have the means or the will to stop them. If he gets elected and puts the Mexican government behind this it will get really bad really fast.

Then you will see the ultimate desire of Inga and her ilk.

"Yes", or "no".

I could probably rephrase it in simpler terms if you're having trouble understanding it. Maybe even add a few more options, like "none of the above", if you're feeling constrained.

There was this quote in the Times article; and more than Jack Schaefer’s column, this was the point that I was addressing:

“All nuance and all complexity — and these are complex issues — are completely lost,” she said, describing “overblown” reactions from the president’s critics, some of whom equated the Trump administration’s policy of separating migrant children and parents to history’s greatest atrocities.

“It makes me angry at them, which causes me to want to defend him to them more,” Ms. Anders said.

It really is a lot of nuance and complexity; Ms. Anders is right about that much. The mainstream media has been profoundly hysterical about the refugee child separation issue. But as much or more than anyone, Trump hasn’t articulated his own administration’s case. He continues to run down stupid generalizations and his same dumb campaign sayings.

Nowhere is the lack of articulated nuance and careful explanation as acute as inside the Oval Office.

tim in vermont said...

You’re not serious, you are just the only Democrat who will show his face here, and already you have conceded that a wall is the only real long term solution to this problem that maintains our national sovereignty. @ Inga: Oh what the hell, I'll engage with you briefly.(By the way, autocorrect calls you Inca.)

My point, as others have pointed out, is the selectivity of your outrage. Why now? Why these children? Every example I gave could receive the same amount of media coverage, but that would not be politically expedient. These children at the border are merely pawns in the Democrat party chess game.

It reminds me of the Confederate statue controversy. Why now? Why is this all of a sudden an issue? Why did no one care about this for eight years under Obama? The answer is obvious.

Now let me add another point, about those kids on the border.

I know people who work to free children from sexual slavery rings in this country. It is a below-the-radar crisis here where I live. Many of those children came through the southern border with Mexico. Some of the perpetrators claimed to be the children's parents.

Separating a child from a parent surely seems cruel. But I think it must be remembered, some of those parents aren't really parents. And some of the actual parents are not acting in the child's best interests, to say the least. In some cases, children are used as drug mules. In some cases, the child is being kidnapped (the child on the Time magazine cover, for example).

There are people on both sides of the border who exploit children. And there are times where separating a child from his or her parent, or pseudo-parent, is actually the humane thing to do. And the government is not omniscient - they don't know who these people are when they show up at the border. (But I do agree we should no longer use "Obama cages.")

The issue is far more complicated than it's portrayed in the media. And all the mass hysteria is not helping. If you care about children, you have to think this through on a level that's not pure emotion.

But I have no doubt that I have been more direct in my support of certain Trump Administration immigration enforcement actions, than has Ann Althouse.

My only point has been that Trump has been mostly incompetent in defending those actions himself.

Which is nothing new. It happened in all of our cities with the white flight. Now it is an entire country that is at risk.

The only way this will end well is if we deal with it on the individual level.

They didn't choose to be born in Haiti or in Africa or Mexico.

They do make a choice in their actions.

Saying democrat voters are responsible for the vast majority of gun violence is just as easy as saying black people account for a disproportionate amount of gun violence.

They chose to be democrats.

They didn't choose to be black.

Focus on the democrat part not the black part.

This happened with Jews and is happening with Asians.

Blacks have been taken way off course with the left's victim complex politics.

The Mexicans have flourished as cheap labor, some of which is quite skilled, but that generation of Mexican immigrants was 40 years ago and before.

Now, what we see are illiterate peasants who don't even speak Spanish.

The Central American immigrants came back in the 70s and were legalized in 1986. I had one for a housekeeper. She was from El Salvador and I got to know her quite well. She was literate and a hard worker.

What is coming now are less assimilable because they have been told there is no need to assimilate.

Also, the boys are being taken into gangs while here.

To be fair, you would get plenty of immigrants headed for Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, and various other places also. They all actually have more foreigners in them than one would think. But they are all very strict about immigration.

The Middle East petro-states likewise have tons of third world peoples in them, in some cases very large fractions of the population, but they regulate them as contract laborers.

Poor countries tend to have very severe immigration laws in fact. Its a politically sensitive issue everywhere, as even these can represent greener grass to some even more wretched people.

Good point but CA is headed for the deep dodo soon.

But the state’s boom shows signs of leveling off: after growing much faster than the national average for several years, the economy, notes a recent report by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation, has now fallen to around the national average; the state is no longer generating income faster than its prime rivals such as Texas, Washington State, Oregon, or Utah. California Lutheran University forecaster Matthew Fienup suggests that the state’s economic growth could fall below national norms if current trends continue.

However, I think I understand your point but to what purpose?

Inga: Funny how the Buzzard spent hours yesterday defending what Peely was pushing, lol.

If I were lacking in empathy I'd accuse you of lying, but I know you have profound language processing problems, so I make allowances for your handicap.

But as long as we're here:

Can you answer my simple question today? Had time to think about it, do some googling?

Is in-group preference in marriage, or other social arrangements, a tendency found only within a certain subset of white people?

"Yes", or "no".

I could probably rephrase it in simpler terms if you're having trouble understanding it. Maybe even add a few more options, like "none of the above", if you're feeling constrained.

When Trump made some foolish observations in the Presidential primary about ridding the country of our elitist judges and politicians, who are negatively affecting majority whites. He hammered against the lack of government intervention against illegal aliens and the effect that Democrat liberals were ruining America. His solutions, like his own mind, were over-simplistic and anti-social. Worse, he attracted new Republican voters who declared themselves as conservative populists following the unquestioned ability of a "successful" businessman. He talked tough and he talked mean and he talked in circles - spouting lies and big government solutions. Somehow his despotic rule outside our principles of Federalism was approved by the socialistic beliefs of our young and our under-educated. Finally, he took credit for conservative ideas by appointing a conservative justice and judges have convinced the world that "conservative populism" is not another name for New York liberal, a political position held by dishonest liberals in and around New York City.

What the Republican Party abandoned was "Reaganism" set firmly into "Ronaldus Magnus's" famous quote:

“Today,” he wrote in The Creative Society, “the leadership of the honorable party of Jefferson and Jackson has abandoned the dream of individual freedom, has lost its faith in the people’s ability to determine their own destiny, believes only in centralized government and an all-powerful state.”

Reaganism is embattled, yet survives. How could it not? The principles Ronald Reagan stood for as early as 1947, when he told Hedda Hopper that “Our highest aim should be the cultivation of freedom of the individual, for therein lies the highest dignity of man,” are as immutable as the principles of 1776.

Poor gadfly. He is living In a dream world where Republicans actually support Reagans priorities.

Trump appoints conservative judges. He cuts taxes. He tries to get rid of nukes. All of the things Reagan stood for and did.

What does he have to do to gain your approval? Run guns to South America?

Are there any Contas left? I know Ortega is still in charge.

Sorry but you are wrong my friend. You are not naive. You can not deny human nature. We have abandoned the founders vision. They envisioned a white Christain nation. The more we go away from that the more we go away from our founding principals.

That's why they want to tear down our statues and rewrite our history.

We are not better than anyone else. We are human and need to recognize that reality.

They want to tear down the statues and rewrite history because it points out that democrats/progressives supported and fought for slavery from the start.

I do not deny human nature. I have seen what the rest of the world is like. I have seen what the progressives want to happen here. I have seen the basest most disgusting shit tolerated by entire societies.

Humans are animals.

But individuals overcome it all of the time.

The reason I and the people who fight with me will win is because we believe in something better than what we were born as.

If you want to be on Inga's side so be it.

The story has things backwards. The border story arrived just in time to cover up the IG report which laid out that the Russia collusion story has always been a hit job. That story will still be there even if they don't cover it.

Trump can reliably win the battle if it’s fought with words. But against images and descriptions of distraught and traumatized children and parents, Trump’s superpowers fail.

Oh, really, with 2014 Obama era's photos that the Fake Media refused to air then?

To dust off an old expression, yeah, I consider and question the timing. On the heels of a long awaited IG report into massive political corruption at the FBI, and the absolute botch job aka the Clinton email investigation (with the given that yeah, it happened, and the law was broken) - and suddenly there is a barrage from multiple outlets, with striking almost journo-listic signs of coordination - of an issue simmering for literally years, and weeks after the judicial decision mandating the separations.

Rahm once said never let a crisis go to waste - which especially applies to manufactured ones.

One little girl in a fake montage may be a tragedy, but hundreds suffering and dead of thirst abandoned in the desert are a mere statistic, as someone pointed out.

I know exactly what you are.

I know exactly what I am and what I believe. It is clear as day what we stand for and everyone else here gets it.

You just don't admit what you are.

And you are really quite stupid.

And you have no soul.

"I've always said that the true test of whether you believe in liberty and freedom is whether you will defend the liberty and freedom of people who are not like yourself. Many Trump supporters fail that test completely"

Liberty and freedom mean that each person has the right to discriminate based on their own chosen criteria, and not be forced to use the criteria of others. So it is you, sinz, who does not defend the liberty or freedom of those who are not like your self.

I can support the rights of those who would choose to discriminate against me, so that means I do in fact support the rights of those who are not like me and don't like me. Unlike you, you dummy.

The problem with Jim Crow laws was that they were LAWS!!! The government was used to impose segregation and discrimination on everyone everywhere whether they wanted to participate or not. All they had to do was declare those laws unenforceable on the basis that people have the right to freely associate and disassociate as they see fit in their private lives and businesses, and then things would have sorted themselves out according to the wishes of the actual human beings involved.
