I love nonpolitics.
I had to check the spelling of "Colosseum." I had "Coliseum," which seems to contain 2 mistakes, and yet I see it is also a correct spelling. But I chose "Colosseum" because it seems more expressive of grandeur — the colossal. Something about double letters and "o"s above "i"s.
Song lyric:
Oh, the hours I’ve spent inside the ColiseumHere's the great — colossal — recording of that song by The Band.
Dodging lions and wastin’ time
Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I could hardly stand to see ’em
Yes, it sure has been a long, hard climb
Walker looks super-young in the baseball gear. Something about the hat. And... those shorts. Boyish. That's the crux of my problem with men in shorts. They look like boys. But sometimes it's nice. And it's hot in Rome.

Shorts boyish?
WTF?
That's the crux of my problem with men in shorts. They look like boys. But sometimes it's nice. And it's hot in Rome.
Wait. Since when has temperature been an excuse for men wearing shorts. I seem to recall the counter argument was men should prefer to wear light weight pants.
This should have the "emotional Althouse" tag.
Temp in Rome won’t reach 90 this week. Temps in Omaha all predicted over 90 this week. Over 100 last week. It was 93 in Valentine last week.
Ann is such a fan girl.
"Shorts boyish?"
The late Tom Wolfe said it best:
"[The professor] had on a short-sleeved shirt that showed too much of his skinny, hairy arms, and denim shorts that showed too much of this gnarly, hairy legs. He looked for all the world like a seven-year-old who at the touch of a wand had become old, tall, bald on top, and hairy everywhere else, an ossified seven-year-old, a pair of eyeglasses with lenses thick as ice pushed up to the summit of his forehead -- unaccountably addressing thirty college students...."
This just in: The Daily News reports Scott Walker was booed in the Colosseum.
Plus, lethal ejaculation: Anybody know how this worked?
The Romans loved to put on a big show in the Colosseum and they were always trying to top each other. Usually this was done with copious bloodshed. Toward that end, criminals were often executed in the area. One of the ways the Romans put criminals to death was via sex with animals. The animals used, which must have taken some incredible training, included bulls, wild dogs, baboons and giraffes.

No, I've always said that at a certain temperature, assuming you're going to be outside, shorts are acceptable. But the question is what temperature? I'd say at least 80. In Madison, males start wearing shorts when it's in the 50s and often in the 40s or 30s.
The other key exception is for an activity where the professionals wear shorts, like basketball and tennis and biking (but not golf).
How about grown men in shorts and flip flops at Church? Truly sad.
Waiting for Titus to come along and say something about the woman on the far right.
I love men in baseball caps. Mr. Pants in his faded and much beloved Mariners cap~rowr! :D
The recently PGA gave permission for the men to wear shorts. I kind of. doubt any of them will. This might be a “get off of my lawn” thing. There was an Asian golfer this past weekend that was wearing a visor with a goat on it. When they asked him if he knew that it meant Greatest Of All Time, he said “Really? I am going to get Jack Nicklaus to sign it then!”
Yes, Tom Wolfe said it best; as he always did.
I’m guessing the quote is from Charlotte Simons. Wolfe researched that book at Duke, FSU and maybe Michigan State.
I prefer to wear long pants when golfing, they protect my legs from the sun better than sunscreen. All the other amateur golfers I know and see wear shorts; if it's not warm enough for shorts (>50 degrees) then it's not warm enough for golf. When I arrive at the course one particular friend always greets me with, "You aren't good enough to wear long pants when you golf.". He's been telling that joke so long that he's the only one that laughs now. FYI: I usually play and score better than he does.

"Scott Walker in the Colosseum saluting the Brewers."
You sure that’s not an old pic from County Stadium?
Just a short comment. Short people look silly in shorts, ergo Ann's aversion to shorts.
I notice a lot of middle age or older couples with the man wearing shorts and the woman wearing pants that end below her knees. IMO, the woman looks better.
A pair of light pants with zip off legs is handy at times. I used mine in Italy last year. I also wear them a lot while fishing, both for sun and bug protection even in the most deadly heat and humidity the Bay has to offer.
The Wolfe excerpt is about the professor's spindly, hirsute physique rather than either the short sleeves and pants that reveal them.
What that says is shorts are for real men!
Inga all but certain of impending indictment. Democrats raided used their power to create a crime.
I find shorts on middle aged women Whose legs sport varicose veins and copious cellulite to be much more unattractive than shorts on the average man. Still, I don't find a reason to harp on it, But, then, i'm not misogynistic.
"I’m guessing the quote is from Charlotte Simons."
Yes.
Is Tonette in that picture? I don't recognize any of the woman as his wife. I'm assuming his sons are in it, but honestly I don't know enough about his family -- other than knowing his Aunt -- to recognize anyone.

She's in the lighter shirt to his left. His son Alex is to his left...I'm not sure if the other one is his other son Matt. The other two women?????
@CG, thanks. Nice place for a family vacation, that's for sure!
Does Lebron James look silly in shorts?
Imagine smiling where untold thousands of endangered animals were slaughtered for pleasure. And a few humans.
I believe that the two other women are a lesbian couple that are long-time friends with the Walker family.
You're supposed to wear plus fours when golfing to show off your well-turned calves.
If men do not, as a rule, wear shorts then shorts are only worn by boys.
Then shorts remind an observer of boys.
The rule reinforces the perception for Althouse.
The rest of us do not follow the rule. So we see nothing extraordinary. Althouse is the outlier.
DM says one of the women is Tonette's step cousin.
No scissoring going on there.
Odd that that passes spellcheck.
Wearing tee shirts and shorts when it's freezing out is a macho thing for young guys, though my father once dated a woman who kept her house in the 50's all year. Permanent hot flash or something.
I've done only light weight-lifting, but it made me feel warmer all the time.

Not as silly as Wilt Chamberlain.
Those definitely look like Wisconsin women.
Represent! ..or sumpin'.
I’d give this a “women in shorts” tag.
Hail Caesar. We who are about to drink salute you.

Whether it was shorts or something else, people started speaking English with me right away wherever I went. I didn't get that many chances to try to speak Italian, what little I knew. Or try to rope someone into seeing how much French I remembered from high school.
As for the Colosseum itself, it's insanely crowded. Anybody who wants to get their fill of Roman ruins without crowds and roped off areas, check out Ostia Antica outside of town.
I pronounce the word Colosseum in my head as "collossium," rhymes with "uranium." Then I can remember the spelling.
I do not own a pair of shorts other than swimming trunks. I fully agree with the Althousian injunction, even past 80 degrees. I will never look good in shorts and I can live with that.
Man, the Brewers have let their stadium go to seed.

Ann's aversion to men wearing shorts is at once bizarre and irrational.
I had knee replacement surgery in January. Because of this, I cannot wear shorts as the sun will burn the heck out of my scar. I live in Minneapolis where yesterday, it hit 100 degrees. It sucked wearing long pants outside.
Some years back I rode my motorcycle along the Mississippi River down to Louisiana. The heat and humidity in the bayou -- Lake Fosse Point State Park -- was oppressive. I asked a local what to do. He said to drink lots of water, stay in the shade and wear as little clothing as possible. It worked.
Ann, why must men suffer in order to accommodate your irrational obsession?
As a follow-up, why don't women in shorts look like little girls to you as well? Pretty f'ing sexist on your part.
I went to a nephew's graduation Saturday from a Lutheran high school..the adult attendee clothing ranged from shorts and tees to suits.
The former seemed a bit casual for the occasion.
Folks were asked to hold applause until all graduates received their diplomas.
So..instead..many wooed and shrieked..some while clapping.
Can't stop the feeling, man.
Before Ann decides a temperature threshold, she needs to grow a pair.
“Inga all but certain of impending indictment. Democrats raided used their power to create a crime.”
Well, as long as you’ve mentioned it...
“Cindy Archer, a former aide to Gov. Scott Walker, has lost an appeal of a federal court ruling rejecting her lawsuit alleging that prosecutors in the now-closed John Doe investigation overstepped their constitutional authority.
The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday rejected the appeal filed by Archer.
She had asked the court to overturn a 2016 ruling tossing her lawsuit against Milwaukee County prosecutors.”

Those two women on the ends are the lesbian friends whose wedding Mrs. Walker attended.
I was curious about the colosseum vs. coliseum spelling. Interesting how the dictionaries differ on the origin. Some of them are suggesting it follows a medieval Latin spelling derived from the original colosseum spelling. The French word is Colisée. I had been curious as to whether that was the intermediate step to our coliseum, but no dictionary suggests that's the case. Perhaps the French word also came from the medieval Latin version also?
Edit: all of them, not some of them cite the intermediate step of a medieval Latin spelling.
It's spelled: Flavian Amphitheater.
