I thought Laura Ingraham had called David Hogg a "mother."

I'm reading "‘You’re a mother’: Laura Ingraham faces boycott for taunting Parkland teen over college rejections" at WaPo.

I didn't want to put this in the headline, because I keep getting email from Google Ads saying they're punishing me for failing to stay within the bounds of good taste, but I come from a time when "mother" was an epithet that meant "motherfucker." Based on Urban Dictionary, I think that usage is dead.

But so what did Laura Ingraham say about David Hogg if she didn't call him a mother[fucker], which I agree would be out of line?

She just said: "David Hogg Rejected By Four Colleges To Which He Applied and whines about it. (Dinged by UCLA with a 4.1 GPA...totally predictable given acceptance rates.)"

Why is that boycott-the-advertisers material? Yes, it was a little mean to use the word "whines," considering that Hogg is only 17 or 18 years old, but he's made himself a big public figure and he issues denouncements of others, so using a modestly judgmental word to describe his tone of voice is really nothing. Especially compared to calling him a motherfucker, which is what I thought happened.

So this is really a story about insanely over-the-top reaction.

And look, it's Hogg himself setting the fire of overreaction and fanning the flames:

Yeah, but he's a kid so don't criticize him!!! No, I've got to say he is an over-empowered inciter who's way too eager to break things. Kids need limits.

As for "You're a mother," that was somebody's tweet pushing back Laura Ingraham. Which I read as sexist. Are special demands for empathy imposed on women who have given birth? As long as that's considered a strikingly pithy argument — as WaPo's headline strongly implies — we'll never have a woman President... unless that tweeter meant Laura Ingraham is a motherfucker.

UPDATE: The headline is now: "Facing boycott, Laura Ingraham apologizes for taunting Parkland teen over college rejections." I'm tempted to say, I get results! But the apology is new:
“On reflection, in the spirit of Holy Week, I apologize for any upset or hurt my tweet caused him or any of the brave victims of Parkland,” Ingraham tweeted.
Really only a nonapology. Sorry you're hurt.

Hogg and his fellow organizer were on Bill Maher the other week. It was interesting. They were typical 17 year olds - by turns funny, smart, unreasonably confident, lippy, insightful and dumb. The other guy was occasionally subtly hilarious. I thought their best point was that "WE ARE the experts" (we meaning the students at that school) in reference to their lived experience.

Considering David Hogg is a BULLY, running around screaming that if you do not agree with him "you have blood on your hands." - it would make sense that Hogg was and is a bully on other issues in High School.

Could be. Hogg could be the kind to make fun of Cruz, while Hogg with a couple of tough guys or a group for protection..not in a one on one though 'cause no doubt Cruz would go crazy on him.

I have been wondering how physically tough Cruz is since the first day. Only students at the school know.

The fact that you are not all there is also suggestive, but that would be a matter of opinion.
Nonetheless, congratulations on coming up with a great new look.

The personal insults are crazy. Let these kids have their say regardless of what they say or who happens to share their opinions. What matters more than opinions is taking the personal attacks off the table and having a conversation. Can adults please do this?

Why is it the many people making appeals to decency had nothing to say about Hogg claiming his opponents support the murder of children? Do they believe nothing can be indecent when in service of the left?

Be serious: there is no conversation with people who claim you support murdering children. People who claim to want conversations but don't push back on the initial hatefulness are revealing they don't want conversations but rather are supporting the hate by making the pushback against it less effective.

Here's what Laura Ingraham actually said:

You see this cat Hogg is a bad mother (Shut your mouth)

But I'm talkin' about Hogg (Then we can dig it)

He's a complicated man but no one understands him but his media handlers (David Hogg)

All one needs to do is read Hogg's responses to realize just how stupid it was for Ingraham to apologize to this little shit.

In addition, thank you for listing the targeted advertisers. It's helpful to see who makes their marketing decisions based on the snarling spews of a 17-year-old asshole.

Good move, corporate. Enjoy those shareholder meetings.

King of the Hogg was whining. What difference does it make that he was rejected by four colleges when three others have said, "yes - please attend." FAU, just up the road in Boca has approved his application, as have Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and Cal State San Marcos, just north of San Diego.

Attendance for non-residents in California will run $35K - $40K per year and Florida resident costs are about $25K. I am surprised to find that ex-government employees made enough in retirement to afford $40K per year payments for each of their kids. Perhaps Inspector General Horowitz should investigate sources of funds.

I see. So, I'm supposed to just sit back and be called a murderer?

Nope.

Rick, why do you care about his opinion?

Why do you claim to desire a conversation? Since you think I'm not supposed to care about his opinion what would the conversation be about?

I'll bet if you had a chance to talk to him you would see he is not as strident as you think he is.

As I think he his? Surely you meant as he has spoken and written.

But I see the framing. They can slime and misrepresent us but we must deal with them in good faith granting even utterly implausible benefits of the doubt. This is usually what the far left means by a "conversation".

I've listened to Hogg. Calling people child killers is not a great reason for me to give him respect. Some level of respect is given default to people. If he wants to treat people like garbage that's fine. But, you don't get to call people killers and expect to be given extra respect.

Matt Sablan said...

I wonder how much benefit of the doubt I have to give people who claim to want to see people killed before they can be treated with as much circumspection as Joe the Plumber.

Let's get real.

David Hogg gets attention that he doesn't deserve because he is a lippy kid who had 17 schoolmates and teachers murdered. Who would care about the opinions of some 17 year old from East Yahoo, Florida, if he weren't saying what the media wants to hear (guns bad!) in the aftermath of a school bloodbath? His assistance from the gun grabbers tells you everything that anyone needs to know.

Having said that, Laura Ingraham should know better than to latch on to Hogg's own publicity machine, which is trying to get him into a more prestigious school than Cal Poly. She stepped directly on a banana peel by snarking at the kid. As someone above said, full ride offers from Yale, Harvard, and NYU have to be on the way.

There won't be any "conversation" with this guy because he knows what he thinks, and he is fast with the accusatory quip if you disagree with him. His fifteen minutes are just about over.

Matt Sablan said...

Calling Hogg out for his eliminationist rhetoric isn't name calling.

Matt Sablan said...

Does Hogg know how many defensive legal gun uses were reported last year? How many of those crimes is he willing to risk actually happening for what exact policy change? How does he want to address the systemic failure that let someone reported multiple times for violent crimes skate? If he wants to have a hard and serious conversation, let's. But I don't think he dies judging by his rhetoric.

Amadeus 48 said...

By the way, if UCLA doesn't offer Hogg a full ride, he'll say they have "blood on their hands" for knuckling under to the NRA.

Then you act as if his saying his opponents desire to murder children is decent. No words of criticism at all even though that is far more abhorrent than anything said to him in return.

Big Mike said...

@DantheMan, those restrictions and more are already on the books. The issue is and has been enforcement. One of the laws on the books concerns straw purchases, making it illegal for an individual to buy a firearm on behalf of another person. Eleven months back a woman in a Chicago suburb, Simone Mousheh by name, was sentenced to twelve months probation and a fine of $679 for violating that law -- after purchasing four handguns to resell to Chicago gang members. In theory she could have been sentenced to twelve years in prison, but that's not what happens when officials can't be bothered to enforce laws already on the books.

There has to be a cause to deny people their nature rights, their civil rights, their human rights. Progressive gun control ignores causes, treats symptoms for profit, and manufactures ideological and partisan leverage. As well as destroys jobs and communities. The children were left vulnerable and defenseless by the anti-rights adventurers, a distracted FBI, an uncommitted Sheriff, and the habitual prosecutorial discretion, selection of progressive and liberal sects.
