Cynthia Nixon is running for Governor of New York: "This is a time to stick our necks out!"

She has experience... just not in government.

It worked for Trump.

Drain the swamp! Right??

Wouldn't be worse but wouldn't be better. Unless you are an accelerationist waiting for the crash. So maybe it would be worse. Or better.

Cynthia Nixon will drain the swamp?

Something tells me that assertion is"just a bit outside"....

Th first female Bernie Sanders. She wants my money so she can redistribute any money I have left over. Maybe she can run for IRS Commissioner.

Is she related to Richard, or Marnie?

Correction, Marni Nixon with no "e."

Leftists are always trying to outdo each other with the big government and the social justice. She'll get in and nothing will change.

It was pretty easy to decide against voting for the Clinton Criminal Syndicate. I mean, why would anyone want corrupt, sell-out Hillary and Slick Willie and his dick back in the White House?

I'm not familiar with NY Politics. On purpose! Is the choice Nixon presents as stark? Or is it just two flavors of generic Vanilla Ice Cream at super-premium price mark-ups?

Andrew can dust off those "Vote for Cuomo, Not the ...." signs he has saved in the basement.

Upstate is perpetually screwed. Everybody's talking about splitting up California; but New York State really deserves it. Bella Abzug had the right idea, albeit for the wrong reasons.

Why would anyone someone who believes the swamp should be the ultimate authority on every subject be interested in draining the swamp?

As a conservative female Christian, I'd turn gay too. She's hot.

Vote for Cynthia! She's as liberal as Cuomo, but has a vagina!

We're gonna need, sorry: get, a bigger swamp.

Bay Area Guy said...

It'd be good if Ms. Nixon identified the substantive policies that Governor Cuomo has supported and/or signed into law, that: (1) are not good for New Yorkers and (b) are not what Ms. Nixon would have prescribed.

If both Cuomo and Nixon are both: (a) pro-choice, (b) pro gay marriage, (c) for higher taxes, and (d) for higher government spending, then what difference at this point does it make?

The Left is fending off the Far Left.

Noted she did not mention Cuomo by name.

She needs a real message. "Inequity" is a non-message; it's a platitude.

If we gave everyone just a million dollars, we can all be millionaires.

How did we not let that happen?

Well, as an actress she must have an Equity Card which she could play. Or maybe she meant Iniquity, which always plays well in NYC.

Bilwick said...

If she really wants to stick her neck out, she could be a libertarian and take on Der Staat--instead of echoing the same "liberal" superstitions as almost every other actress in Hollywood and New York City gives allegiance to.

Ann Althouse said...

I prefer “Time to stick our neck out” to “Time to sticks our necks out.”

Do you have a position on this perennial grammar question?

Problem is with the last name Nixon people will think of Dick instead of neck.

If she simply runs a campaign that points out the corruption for those in her party, she will have done a public service.

Nixon's the One.

Why do all women feel they need to wear sleeveless dresses now? They are flattering on some, but not on all. We'd think it weird if men worse sleeveless shirts all the time for professional reasons.

Ladies, put your arms away. I don't want to see your flabby upper arms and your armpits all the time.

I was born in New York City, and went back there for law school. My German and Irish ancestors immigrated there (well, to Brooklyn, which was then a separate city), and even my Yankee ancestors ended up there after a couple of centuries in New England. I loved New York City. The big question is whether New York politics can overwhelm New Yorkers' strength of character. I fear that it is becoming clear that the answer is "Yes". I think that New York State is a better case even than California for secession of part of a state. If Upstate becomes a new state, I could see western Connecticut and Massachusetts seceding to join the new state. If residents of New York City saw that happening, they might pull up their socks and do something about the awful governments they've elected. Or maybe they'd be happy to be rid of the hicks. Win-win either way.

There is no such thing as a collective neck, nor does anyone have multiple necks, so I reject both options. Using the language accurately is my preference. I would prefer if she had said, "This is the time for me to stick my neck out for the state I love. Please support me." She wants people's money and votes, not their necks. The idea that there is some life threatening risk involved in supporting her as governor doesn't speak highly of her qualifications or self confidence.

Wince said...

Nixon does seem like a frivolous candidate when you put in context she probably wouldn't be running if production of the "Sex and the City 3" weren't shelved because Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker had a falling out.

We should all try to think of one of those clever little puns SJP always uses on Sex in the City.

Wince said...

And we don't even have to ask if the carpet matches the drapes.

"I could be on death row and not have that... situation down there."

Hey, if she was elected governor she could grant you a reprieve if not a pardon.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

I think she could do it. She's got the right rhetoric down pat, and a pretty believable delivery. I say go. I'd like to see her do it. More governors like these could finally put an end to the Republicriminal menace.

Goddamn. What kind of hallucinogens do you do. Yep I'm really sure a region that's half below the poverty line will try to get rid of access to NYC's tax base. How far removed from reality do you have to be to come up with an idea like that? Well, you're a Republican so I guess familiarity with reality can't be one of your strong suits.

You Republicans and fellow travelers really are something else. Why not just put an ankle monitor on his penis if you're that interested in what he does with it? The amount of creepy you folks project in wanting to know who's doing what with which body part really is gross.

"I love it when toothy whines about a state's corruption problem when that state is one party rule. Good times."

This sentiment is true across all political parties. It's not Democrat vs. Democrat or GOP vs. GOP: it's uncorrupted new politician vs. entrenched corrupt politicians. It worked for Trump. No reason it can't work for anyone else. Voters sometimes like someone who carries no political baggage.

Of the 4 women on Sex in the City, I doubt I'm alone in asserting that Ms. Nixon was the least fuckable. I'm not saying she was un-fuckable. I'm saying that if you met the four at a NYC cosmo bar, you'd hesitate to ask her to dance, and only if the other 3 rejected you.

In contrast, all of the women in "Girls" are completely unfuckable. Maybe, Lena Dunham will run for office too!

You mean like Kansas? Very well run state, that.

Betcha can't name five well-managed red states.

How's Alabama doing, BTW? Any metric it's not dead last in?

I really like this lady in her ad and hopefully she'll be a better politician than a non-sex symbol. but I couldn't agree more. All these women I know go on and on and on and on and on and on about how supposedly attractive she is. But she's not. Doesn't bother her because she's a lesbian anyway but whatever goes through these women's heads to make them extol her as a beauty is incomprehensible. I think since women are attracted to personality anyway maybe it's one of those things where she's actually one of the few bitches who are genuine and they're just responding to that instead. I think they're attracted to her not putting on airs while somehow still looking less Sarah Huckabee Sanderses than Roseanne Barr.

Yes. Maybe you should read "America 3.0"

It might even happen.

Trump had plenty of experience as an executive, managing money, investments, resources, people. I'm sure Trump also had experience dealing with politicians and government bureaucracy as well.

I'm really astonished at how, even at this late date, people (like Althouse above) continue to underestimate Trump. Just because he'd never held (or even ran for) elected office prior to 2016 doesn't mean he doesn't have skills and experiences available to bring to bear.

Her candidacy is an aspect of the Cuomo v. DeBlasio split. Her wife worked for DeB until shortly before stories appeared that she was talking about running against Cuomo. The uber- lefties here hate Cuomo (many others do too) but his problem is that the uber-lefties show up to vote in the Dem primary. Last time he ran, an unknown but uber-lefty law prof from CUNY ran against him in the Dem primary and got a third of the vote. So he can't laugh this off. The Reps don't have anyone and so the winner of that primary is quite likely to become governor.

The South was controlled by Democrats from the Revolution until the 1990s (and in some cases a decade longer) so I must agree with TTR.

Democrats ruined the South like they are ruining Connecticut, New York, Illinois and California.

Is there anything Democrats cannot destroy?

As a separate state, Upstate could have dramatically lower taxes and much less restrictive regulations; it could be a right to work state. It could appeal to businesses looking to locate in a friendlier environment, including but not limited to businesses now located in New York City; nowadays, corporations in NYC have to move out of the metro area to avoid high taxes (NJ and CT are also high tax states), but Upstate would be just up the road. Upstate could allow fracking, which NY State has rejected, and invite an oil-and-gas rush. Upstate would probably control much of The City's water supply, and it could charge The City a lot for it. If "global warming" happens, Buffalo could become a tourist mecca.

I don't know. I haven't lived in New York for a long time, and I never lived in what could become Upstate. Maybe Upstate secession wouldn't work. Maybe it's a pipe dream. But I bet it would have a better chance of improving the lot of more New Yorkers that electing either Cuomo or Nixon.

Kansas.

Alabama.

And several other red states that take way more from the federal government than they contribute, you dumb basement-dwelling asshole.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Yep. That LBJ really ruined the south now, didn't he?

How horrible what FDR did with the TVA.

And JFK forcing Alabama's schools to desegregate.

Yes, I can see why you think Democrats were bad for the south. Because you're nostalgic for the ante-bellum era.
