Super Bowl.

The teams. The ads. The hoopla.

Chat about it here.

UPDATE: Great game. Exciting throughout. We were rooting for the Eagles.

It came as close as is possible, but the game itself was still not anywhere near the entertainment provided by the great Master Justin Timberlake, music God.

Collinsworth was spot on.

You validated my comment that flame-throwing commie-pinko lefties see everything through a racist lens. Congrats!

More MLK, please.

If Dodge had simply used his words, simply quoted from his sermon, THAT would have been a good thing. What made it objectionable was they way that they then added, "oh, and buy our trucks too, after all that's the real reason we are quoting him" at the end.

Everyone knew what you meant by your wink and nod. We're not all as ignorant as you.

Remember when Rush used to talk about “Gorbasms” That feeling that liberals got from that leader of the Soviet Union? I think Mark is experiencing something similar.

Yes, bigots and other prejudiced people always “know” what people they don’t like are thinking.

Back in the day, defense won games. Those days are long gone.

Mark ayon kay ...

And we all know what is meant by that mocking "PTL."

Now, most days, you could say such things and they would pass unremarked on. But frankly, I'm not in the mood right now for your ignorant bigotry to just pass by.

When Timberlake sat down at the piano, I was really hoping for a touching rendition of "Dick in a Box".

For the Netflix fans who liked Mindhunter, be sure to watch Manhunt: Unabomber also on Netflix (originally aired on Discovery). By far the best thing I saw on TV last year.

I am not a strong football fan to begin with (though I was getting stronger).

This taking a knee thing turned a potentially stronger customer into someone who won't even watch the ads. I won't get upset at '84 Lumber. I miss out on some beer commercials. I won't see guys disrespecting the flag and the nation.

I'll find other places for my entertainment dollars.

My daughter is somewhere on Broad Street with her college friends. Must be a zoo in Philly now. Now I have to wait until who knows when for her to get home due to the crowds. Thank God for location finding.

Article in the St. Paul Pioneer press addressed to superbowl visitors, advised them not to expect in-depth conversations from Minnesotans because they practice “word thrift.”

Minnesotans are not terse or laconic; they are word thrifty. Great phrase.

"Word thrifty" as in this Fargo dialogue:

Hooker #2: Yeah, we both did. She went to college too.
Hooker #1: I went to Normandale for about a year'n-a-half.
Hooker #2: Yah, that's where we met.
Hooker #1: But I dropped out though.
Hooker #2: Yah, she dropped.
Hooker #1: Yah!
Marge: So, where you girls from?
Hooker #1: Chaska.
Hooker #2: Le Sueur. But I went to high school in White Bear Lake. Go Bears.
Marge: Okay. I want you to tell me what these fellas looked like.
Hooker #1: Well, the little guy, he was kinda funny-looking.
Marge: In what way?
Hooker #1: I dunno, just funny-lookin'.
Marge: Can you be any more specific?
Hooker #1: I couldn't really say. He wasn't circumcised.
Marge: Was he funny lookin' apart from that?
Hooker #1: Yeah.
Marge: So, you were having sex with the little fella then?
Hooker #1: Uh-huh.
Marge: Is there anything else you can tell me about him?
Hooker #1: No. Like I say, he was funny lookin'. More n' most people even.
Marge: And what about the other fella?
Hooker #2: He was a little older. You know, looked like the Marlboro man.
Marge: Oh yah?
Hooker #2: Yah. But maybe I'm sayin' that, you know, cause he smoked Marlboros.
Marge: Uh-huh.
Hooker #2: You know, like a subconscious-type thing.
Marge: Yah, that can happen.
Hooker #2: Yah.
Hooker #1: They said they were goin' to the Twin Cities?
Marge: Oh, yah?
Hooker #2: Yah!
Hooker #1: Yah. Is that useful to ya?
Marge: Oh, you betchya, yah.

According to the police scanner, there's a crowd at Broad and Market throwing bottles at police.

Cops are everywhere. It's not hard for a stray bottle to accidentally hit a stray cop. Don't believe everything you watch on FOX Noise.

It's possible we could become like one of those many other cities in America where the people are afraid of the cops and how many of them just might get killed by one for, you know, whatever reason the cops in this country like to gun down unarmed citizens. But this trade-off is legitimate, too. A government that fears its people vs. a people that fears its government, and all.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together ayon kay ...

Republicans are always telling me how afraid the federal government should be of their guns and violence and how much we should decentralize all government to the states. (And municipalities?)

So any lawlessness in Philadelphia tonight is just a logical extension of those two ideas.

Yeah, it sounds like an industrial motorcycle, or maybe a street cleaner. Can't tell if they're taking out the sanitation services on them already!

OTOH, I'm still hearing a lot of horn honking and vuvuzelas. Legitimately, a lot of goof-offs probably drove in to their favorite bar and now have to drive back out. But still, try to celebrate smartly.

It's almost enough to make me stop hating New England!

Yancey Ward ayon kay ...

I didn't watch- I haven't really watched a Super Bowl since the first Giants vs Patriots Super Bowl. I have always admired the deep professionalism and consistency of the Patriots, but only a true Patriots fan should have been rooting for them tonight, everyone else should have been for the Eagles.

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together ayon kay ...

That SNL skit is so true.

Yancey Ward ayon kay ...

I did at one point switch over to catch a score, and got a lesson in getting old. There was some sort of commercial for, I think, cellphones that had a very quiet instrumental musical theme playing in the background, and it was bothering me for an hour afterwards- I knew it was familiar, but for the life of me I couldn't nail it down. Then it hit me later like a thunderbolt- it was "All Apologies".

The logical extension of this idea is that the federal government should send in the Army or Marines to keep order. Or maybe have a large federal police force just hanging around that could be sent in to these situations to crack some skulls. Yeah - that's a great idea!

As a fan of the Patriots, I want to congratulate the Eagles for playing a smart, tough and excellent game. The players and the coaches worked hard and deserved to win. The Pats were very good, but the Eagles were better.

I also want to thank the inventor of the channel changer. I did not see a single commercial. The entire experience was fun and non-political.

It was an enjoyable, if brief escape from the real world.

Me too. Made me wonder if the entire Dodge Ram commercial was a setup.

Coincidentally, Dodge and Jeep are owned by the same corporation -- Fiat Chrysler.

It's a good thing my Steelers defense didn't have the face the Eagles offense. Foles would have rolled up 60 points.

Tide ad was the best commercial. They had me thinking some of the other ads were Tide ads.

Dirty Dancing was amusing, and very well done.

Diet Pepsi commercial was the biggest fail. Dodge, yeah, bad decision, they must have bet it would be controversial and they thought it would be worth the talk. Possibly, probably not, but you can see where they were coming from. But Diet Pepsi gal, no, sorry, that agency is already fired and the person who approved the ad also fired.

Henry ayon kay ...

Agree with you, Sarah. I don't think anoxeria is what you want to associate with diet soda. The Ram commercial made me cringe, but the Diet Pepsi commercial was truly abhorrent.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

"Donkey shit for brains Inga makes an idiotic and bitchy comment, gets rightly mocked for it, calls others bitchy. Just another day at Althouse, LOL!"

You, like so many others, are responding to negging. Why don't you see how you are being played and simply stop?

Henry ayon kay ...

My Favorite ad was the Vikings -- also for Dodge Ram Pickup. That's how you sell a pickup truck.

Henry ayon kay ...

But what a truly schizophrenic ad play by Fiat Chrysler:

1. The humorous Vikings ad for Dodge Ram -- a full 60 second spot and one of the best ads of the evening.*
2. The painfully tone-death MLK ad for Dodge Ram.
3. The Jeep ad at the end of the night that mocks the MLK ad.
4, 5. Two other less memorable ads.

The Jeep ad at the end plays a little meta with the earlier ad. It also provides some cover to the ad-makers for equating civil rights with owning a big-ass truck. Cover, as in, "we aren't really that clueless about how awful that bombastic, make-believe earnestness looks to most of you -- that's just some ad shit, homies."

* I assume an alternate ending for that ad was filmed. I would love to see it.

M Jordan ayon kay ...

Great game, fantastic finish, fine National Anthem, good ads with Tide winning the night. The only really annoying things were the “We Are the World” ads and the frenetic halftime show. I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but it seems like Timberlake wasn’t even doing songs. The dancing is fine but all the waving and pumping and gyrating and moving around ... emblematic of a national soul that is vacuous at the center.

But that’s just me.

Joaquin ayon kay ...

Aside from the last Jeep commercial, this had to be the most drab, and drab commercials ever. All trying to be the MOST social conscious. Please!

It was my favorite ad of the night, too. Be sure to watch the extended version, which I linked last night on the first page of comments here. It's even better than the broadcast version was.

I had six people age 7 and under at my house for Super Bowl party. They were running in-and-out of the room with the television. When Justin Timberlake came on, magically, they all reappeared and with no intervention on anyone's part, energetically danced with him, until that was over, and then they again disappeared.
