It's disaster entertainment. Dead children are a great find for ratings.
No one points out that a lot of S.O.B's die in disasters too.
There is a silver lining sometimes.
The silver lining this time was (spoiler) that the smart little boy was later pulled out alive.
This puts transgender bathrooms in perspective.
And cotton plant flower arrangements...
Here's a headline you'll never see: "Stupid ugly kid saved from Earthquake."
Or what about: "Heroic man saves Richard Spenser and Neo-nazis from blazing fire."
Its funny how people pride themselves on being compassionate - but as they said in Animal farm: "Some animals are more equal then others".
This stuff is porn. I couldn't read it. How jaded are the NYT readers, anyway?

My heart bleeds for anyone who suffers the loss of a child - smart, ugly, whatever. I can imagine no worse fate than to lose one of my children.
Can't imagine the horror of being buried alive under tons of shifting masonry . . . or knowing that a loved one is.
I couldn't read it either. It's just too heartbreaking.
