"There are now more than 16 million shared bicycles on the road in China’s traffic-clogged cities, thanks to a fierce battle for market share..."

"... among 70-plus companies backed by a total of more than $1 billion in financing. These start-ups have reshaped the urban landscape, putting bikes equipped with GPS and digital locks on almost every street corner in a way that Silicon Valley can only dream of.... Because the start-ups do not use fixed docking stations, riders abandon bicycles haphazardly along streets and public squares, snarling traffic and cluttering sidewalks. Thieves have taken them by the tens of thousands, for personal use or selling them for parts. Angry and mischievous vandals hang them in trees, bury them in construction sites and throw them into lakes and rivers...."

What’s Wrong With Us?

The tragedy of the commoners.

What's wrong with you is that you still haven't figured out concepts like pride of ownership and that communal property tends to be treated poorly. Think that's taught in the first week of micro...

THIRD of Texas' 41 highly toxic waste dumping sites are now flooded - sparking fears that toxins linked to birth defects and cancer are leaching into floodwaters

The frustration has to come out somewhere. This is just very low level rebellion against the powerful. For higher level rebellion, check out this Trump guy. We elected him so we don't have to trash bicycles.

Doesn't anyone wear a helmet over there? THere

Sorry, commenting while spin biking.

"Sparking fears" means they they want YOU to be afraid but have no clue whether this is a problem or not. Likely not, with all that water. "Dilution is the solution to pollution."

16 million shared bicycles ... $1 billion in financing.

A $62.50 / bike. "For a few dollars more", you can get a Dynacraft 16" Boys' Hot Wheels Bike

Have the Chinese ever not "treated each other like enemies"?

What a great experiment!

I actually saw a woman have her bike stolen from her in China. She was riding along and a small child darted out in front of her and of course she knocked the child over. The child's parents came running over. The young lady got off her bike to help the child. The father accosted her. And while the young lady was seeing to the child the father hopped on her bike and then got the mother and child on the bike, and rode off. The young lady, now distraught, chased after them all the way down the road.

China is a country that has almost no legal system... or it has a nascent legal system. Tort law doesn't really exist in practice, but only in their legal code. Historically, thanks to Confucianism there wasn't a legal system, and the Communist system, before recently, was predicated on street level communists sorting their neighbors' problems out.

According to leftists and the media waste dumps only flood when a republican is president.

Obama was able to erect a force field. Of stupidity and lack of consistency...

What's wrong? Where to start. How about, start with the 40 million-plus deaths in the Great Leap Forward.

You are confuting prices in importer US with prices in exporter China ... More like 20 bucks, still significant.

I put a GPS on a bike a few years ago to see what errands added up to, and also what happened when the trip mileage went over 9999 miles.

It wound up 8,000 miles a year errands, and the trip mileage went to 0000 after 9999.

No such information can be obtained from communal bikes.

Cultural Revolution created an amoral society, by destroying the old culture.

Achilles বলেছেন...

This is a prelude to the day when we will essentially be able to build as many bikes as we want for free.

The only limit on the number made will be our irritation at the piles of bikes in the way.

ARM: Stupid click-bait that makes trumpsters right is never a good idea. More importantly is that 100% of the Houston sewer system is flooded bringing pathogens to everyone. No fears sparked because everyone shits therefore no one to blame.

The way to stop bicycle theft is through ever more intense bicycle theft pranks (one of the coolest new performance are trends).

Oh, Virgil! That does my old heart good! When I think of all the bikes I have had stolen.... Seems a bit risky, though. What if somebody really large and dangerous steals the bike? Are you going to take him on with just a pie? And what if the thief decides to ride off in the other direction? I think the cable traps are a better idea. Let the stupid bastard get up to speed, and then Ga-Jang! He's on his snout in the street!

I suppose Althouse would say it's an attractive nuisance.

Poor subtitling of classic 1940s Italian film likely to blame.

Foreshadowing the issues when we have car sharing throughout our cities. I know the start-ups think they can discourage the problems with video monitoring but don't underestimate the ingenuity of common criminals.

Ah, so glad I tuned in to see that the concern of the day is the flooded sewers in Houston. I am not hearing much about why there is not a full evacuation of L.A. because of the fire.

gg6 বলেছেন...

I blame it on Trump.

Damn things have descended upon Seattle. They're ugly and all over the place. Plus they're allowed to operate in a city that requires helmets on all cyclists. But hey, don't worry about that, they're saving Gaia or something.

It's already happening in my neighborhood in Oakland. Kids use stolen credit cards to rent Zipcars and then go mug people with the Zipcars to obtain more stolen credit cards.
