I watched that video a few days ago, and it's haunting me. Something about the demeanor of the 2 women — Amanda Marcotte and Fiona Helmsley — is just so weirdly enervated as they bemoan the deplorable energy ("fragility") of men.
More transcript here, at Salon:
I think the single greatest threat, and I’ll say to humanity, at the moment is male fragility, and men just not being able to process their feelings of insecurity, their feelings of anger....So they're taking the nurture side of the old nature-or-nurture argument. And they're happier with women because they've been nurtured to care about how they look? Shouldn't a feminist oppose the nurturing of women to care about how they look and whether they're "more sensitive"? That sounds as though low-level vanity is meritorious.
What they were chanting in Charlottesville: ‘You will not replace us.’ Who is trying? Who is trying to replace you?...
I think it’s just the way that society raises them. Women are raised to have some concern about the way that they look, and they’re encouraged to be more sensitive. A lot of men aren’t....
And oddly enough those Charlottesville Alt-Right guys were concerned about how they look. There's this (in Vice):
... Andrew Anglin, who runs the popular hate site the Daily Stormer, published a truly astounding blog post... that explains how the movement he helped build should market itself [at the Charlottesville rally]....
The worst look ever is a baggy T-shirt. Wear fitted T-shirts, where the sleeve goes to the middle of your bicep. It should not hang lower than base of your member....
Jean [sic] should also be fitted. Not tight, just fitted. In the photo those are actually shorts – I would not wear pants that loose-fitting. And that's another thing: don't ever wear shorts. Serious men in serious situations are not wearing shorts....
Fat people should be allowed to join groups and be involved in rallies, but we need to create a culture where we don't necessarily shame people, but do look at them and expect them to get it together. We should help people get it together. I'm working on my biggest diet guide ever, which I think will help the overweight and skinny alike, even if they've minimal time for exercise.
Continued obesity should not be tolerated.
Surely, a lot of our target demographic is going to be out of shape, which is why we need a culture of fitness. People should go to the gym together. Help each other with diet.
Do not look scraggly. I won't tell you how to cut your hair, but I do believe men's hair looks better short, and beards look better well-trimmed.

It takes a village.
It’s also like the scariest thing, for anyone probably. For being a woman, for being somebody who’s gay, for being somebody who’s Muslim, to walk down the street and there’s a pack of guys, because it’s just, you know, the performance of masculinity can be so dangerous.
Gotta love the vagueness of who the somebody's are and who that pack of guys are.
Serious men in serious situations are not wearing shorts....
LOL. This has to be the new Althouse blog tag.
Like the Washington Post's "Democracy Dies in Darkness".
Problem is Althouse is not man enough to do. Too fragile.
If she admits that she has "no idea' how to fix things, why listen to her?

Jeez, who's fragile now.

I've noticed the Nazis in prison seem to be a particularly fit group. If it weren't for their branding issues, they could make a killing in the diet and weight-loss realm

No, the scariest thing for them is to address whether this "male" phenomenon applies to males other than white males.
Not the way society raised them. Society never raised a damn thing.
Women raised these boys. It is their fault. More toxic femininity, as though the world hasn't enough of that.
That whole interview was appalling. One stereotype after another, derisive toward men, sneers at the complaint that this group of men make about being replaced and then segues into her prescription for men to be taught to express themselves verbally.
Every solution she offers is a variation of, "these men should be reasonable and accept what we feminists want, and learn to only verbalize their feelings if we approve of them." It reminds me of an inside joke between my husband and me- when we start heading into a disagreement sometimes one of us will catch ourselves being stubborn and will say with self deprecating sarcasm, "You should just be reasonable and do it my way."
It is fascinating how leftists insist that we need to be careful about criticizing Islamic extremists, that we cannot generalize and must distinguish between the radicals and the vast majority of Muslims who are not extremists, that we have to understand our own sins that have contributed to the rise of the Islamic movement.
But when it comes to white extremists it's like a contest as to who can say the most outrageous things. No concerns about painting with broad brushstrokes about masculinity and males and getting paint on everyone. In this case, it's anything goes.
Surely, a lot of our target demographic is going to be out of shape
Continued obesity should not be tolerated.
Fatcist.

One of the commenters at the link called it bullying. Yup.
"Who is trying to replace them?" Classic gaslighting.
In a little more than 30 years, the U.S. will be a “majority-minority” country. By 2050, white Americans will no longer be a solid majority but the largest plurality, at 46 percent. African Americans will drop to 12 percent, while Asian Americans will make up 8 percent of the population. The number of Latinos will rise to nearly a third of all Americans.
It’s become an article of faith among many progressives that these trends set the stage for a new Democratic majority. A decade ago, Ruy Teixeira and John B. Judis popularized this argument in their book The Emerging Democratic Majority. More recently, Jonathan Chait in New York magazine made a similar case: “The modern GOP—the party of Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes—is staring down its own demographic extinction,” he wrote. “Conservative America will soon come to be dominated, in a semi-permanent fashion, by an ascendant Democratic coalition hostile to its outlook and interests.”

That interview was terrible, they can only have a discussion of generalities and stereotypes. I mostly avoid social scientists now - except for a few noble exceptions - because they no longer care about proper scholarship and just want to talk about their neurosis.
When these social science types start psychoanalyzing large groups of people, they are always talking about themselves and projecting their issues and insecurities onto others. Social sciences attract people with mental illnesses where they learn that their bad behaviour is never their fault but someone else's fault, like a faceless white male.
No shorts.
What about lederhosen?

maybe gaslighting, maybe she really is that ignorant and has no desire to inform herself.
"men just not being able to process their feelings of insecurity, their feelings of anger"
Men are very much able to do this. Men processing their feelings pretty much defines world history. But it's not generally by talking about their feelings with each other. Much of the appeal of sports and fighting and other physical expressions are the core way of processing. Get it out. That's why guys can fight with each other and shake hands after. I'd say that tendency is a big part of being a man. Men, mostly, aren't talkers, they prefer physical expression.
The trouble comes with social repression where some men are told they can't fight or participate, so the anger turns elsewhere.

"Who cares about statues?" Uh, like maybe all those left politicians and activists who are taking them down, legally or illegally? Do they all have fragile masculine egos, too? Even the women?
I tell you, if I'm ever in charge of a march, you know who I'm going to exclude? Women with tatoos. I wouldn't exclude fat people; maybe they can't help it, they just were born with fat genes. But nobody was born with a tatoo of, whatever they are supposed to be, on each arm like Marcotte.
We seem defensive because female privilege prevents us from hitting them both good and hard in the mouth, as they deserve.

Nothing is ever anybody's fault, because reasons. Speaking of Social "sciences" Check out this one:
Population Engineering and the Fight against Climate Change
Colin Hickey, Travis N. Rieder, and Jake Earl1
ABSTRACT: Contrary to political and philosophical consensus, we argue that the threats posed by climate change justify population engineering, the intentional manipulation of the size and structure of human populations. Specifically, we defend three types of policies aimed at reducing fertility rates: (1) choice enhancement, (2) preference adjustment, and (3) incentivization. While few object to the first type of policy, the latter two are generally rejected because of their potential for coercion or morally objectionable manipulation. We argue that forms of each policy type are pragmatically and morally justified (perhaps even required) tools for preventing the harms of global climate change.
You would think that if you were proposing to overcome your own ethical reservations in some cause, you would satisfy yourself first that you have your facts down solid. Not these guys, it's like the whole damn elite has succumbed to some kind of mass hysteria. The Enlightenment might really be dead, and we are back to trying to avoiding the plague with nosegays and astrology and the worship of saint's bones.
Well, at least they're not suggesting putting fat people into work camps.
Well, at least they're not suggesting putting fat people into work camps.
Yet.
Here in the real world, male or female you have to be vain. Or you're just viewed as a bumptious incautious foolish risk-to-business or whatever.
I'm getting to the age where I don't need to worry, too much, but what else will they take from us?
""Even talking about this… Men get so mad when they hear women talk about them this way. They get so defensive.""
-- Male fragility is one of those concepts I hear thrown around a lot, but I don't actually think it gets used consistently. Are they talking about fragile egos; an incomplete sense of self? Maybe I need to listen to the whole interview to get an idea of what that term means in context with the rest of this.
But what I do know is that maybe men *should* get defensive when people they don't know try to shame them with a gender stereotype. In fact, maybe it is a good idea for people, in general, to be a bit more cautious about tossing those around.

-- Well, at least climate change isn't the biggest threat any more.
Do men get mad? Or do they just say, "Yes, dear?" and go back to watching football?
The trouble comes with social repression where some men are told they can't fight or participate, so the anger turns elsewhere.
And THIS is where the real trouble begins. The frustration, anger, resentment of being women's and societies latest punching back WILL turn elsewhere.
"Who cares about statues?"
Let's see, we were generous victors after the Civil War, due to Abraham Lincoln's wisdom, largely. Led to a strong reconciliation and firm bonds of nationhood North and South.
We were hard hearted and vengeful victors in WWI, under the leadership of the progressive president Wilson. Led to a word-wide conflagration of violence such as this planet had never seen.
We were generous in victory after WWII, which, affirming the stance that Lincoln originally took, and has led to fast friendships with the defeated nations, who are now our firm allies, even with our differences, in their peoples' hearts and their democratic governments.
Now progressives want to go back and apply Wilson's policies to the South. If these statues are so bad, what is the migration of blacks back to the south all about, anyways? I always enjoy well-executed public art, but maybe the fact that the statues are not this shit that the post modernists push is the real reason, IDK.
In a nation of wimps, a semi-wimp is king.
Women study and discuss how someone processes his feelz. It's almost like they prefer working with people-driven issues rather than things.
This is funny coming from the same people who want to put men in women's lorckerrooms.

What about a pack of guys at night or in a deserted place?
If they are a pack of accountants or salesmen who lost the directions to the hotel, that's not so scary. If they're members of M13, well, that's when you wish you had something more deadly than a nail file with you.
The biggest threat at the moment is liberal fragility. Not being able to process their feelings of insecurity...their feelings of anger. I mean when liberals get angry, they lash out. There's not a lot of intellectual...like ...stop and think it through.
To be honest, I am much more frightened of one guy at night or in a deserted place than of a whole pack of guys.
You know, once I was at an NFL game at the men's room, which of course was pretty full, and there was a woman outside with her son, clearly frightened for him to go in. I felt like saying to her what I was really thinking, which was, "Don't worry, if anybody in their tries something with your son, that person will be lucky to get out alive."
These two ladies are professional politico-cultural partisans, not social scientists, as low a bar as that is.
It is purely in-group rhetorical reinforcement.
There is a tremendous lot of this, where most such talk is intended for the inside of ones own bubble.
As for fascist dress codes and fitness, yes indeed, that was a thing, and for excellent reasons. All modern fascist movements had a militarist-masculine ethic. The idea was to present an attractive image of order and virtue, of the old Roman idea of virtue.
The uniforms also helped. The Italians did the blackshirt thing because they deliberately used elements of the Arditi shock troops of WWI. The Arditi had a well-earned heroic, romantic reputation and there were many ex-Arditi in the fascist movement besides. Every other modern fascist movement copied the Italians. The Spanish Falange for instance adopted a very similar uniform but with blue shirts.
The instinct is much older of course, it is ancient, even primitive. It goes back to every tribe that ever was, where every man was a warrior, and every city-state, where every citizen had to turn out in his panoply. Modern unfitness is a very modern condition and grates against human aesthetic instinct.
You should be concerned when you see anyone or group in a place that doesn't make sense for them to be. Not "scared" or "terrified," just noting: "That doesn't look right." The one time I was robbed was late at night, and I made the mistake of walking home instead of getting a ride from the metro. Right at the edge of the Metro was a bus stop with a bunch of guys sitting in it. I mentally acknowledged: "That's weird; the buses have stopped running for the night," and kept walking.
"It’s also like the scariest thing, for anyone probably. For being a woman, for being somebody who’s gay, for being somebody who’s Muslim, to walk down the street and there’s a pack of guys, because it’s just, you know, the performance of masculinity can be so dangerous."
Pathetic. These women have 1st world problems.
And for gay people and women who don't live under the protection of us dangerous males, it is groups of Muslim men who are dangerous.

If we wanted to be honest and cruel about the deficiencies of modern women, it would be devastating and inarguable. We, like most of the culture, choose not to indulge in that.
The fry voice makes her sound like a woman trying to sound like a man.
If she were a man she would know that it's not changing the pitch, which remains the pitch of a woman. She's got to take voice lessons to extend her bass range instead.

All communist movements very quickly took on the fascist imagery, btw. This was modified a bit to emphasize the muscular worker image, as in their movements ideal was fitness through honest toil. You will see such images all over "social realism", and especially in the masses of Soviet and Spanish Civil War posters.
But this fitness thing kept on in every related regime or revolutionary movement. There never were any fat campesinos.

It seems that a sizeable majority of women in the Midwest are fat and that a disproportionate number are grossly obese. I'm talking enormous asses, battleship-sized beams. Lot of fat men too, but I'm talking, in this regard, of mostly big bellies. The female of the species hereabouts seems to have cornered the market in really, really gross enormous morbidly morbid obesity. I wish the women's movement and feminists would address this problem instead of being so continuously bent out of shape about men and every aspect of their behavior. The issue of female mega-obesity is serious, especially for men like me who like hot slender women with big tits and a tight ass. I mean, if women's obesity isn't a crisis, what is?

I never visited Walmart much in the past. I saw the videos of how strange their clientele tend to dress. I recently moved near two Walmarts, which are always packed with people who do actually dress like that. Yesterday, at one I saw a middle-aged, large black man in a one-piece bright pink jump suit. I wondered what statement he could be going for, or was it just all he had to wear that day. Even then, he had to decide to purchase it at one point.
Men are just defective women. (Sarc alert)
So..went from "Toxic Masculinity" to "Male Fragility"?
You know that these two womyn would categorically disqualify/dismiss any examination, especially critique, of behavior of women by a coupla dudes.
Btw,
Was this toxic femininity?
I could not concentrate on what these old men were saying.
Amazing how powerful those Charlottesville Alt-Right guys were. A mere 300 of them have become extrapolated into a White Supramacist Tide which is Engulfing the Nation.
That was a blatant and disgusting bit of sexism. That whole video was two women putting the hypocrisy of the left on full display.
if men would just learn to PROCESS their feelings, instead of taking actions that reflect heir feelings....
The Nazis oppose the feminism that causes the Weak Male, and the anger of this external conflcit seeks outlet in aggression.
The Antifa pay lip-service to the feminism that causes the Weak Male, and the anger of this internal conflict seeks outlet in aggression.
I am Laslo.
True about the numbers.
300 were incredibly powerful.
Perhaps 3000 should suffice to make the other side beg for mercy.
And I dont think this is just a joke. The lack of self-confidence is extreme. And much of the liberal consensus is a fashion backed by money, also moved by fads. If it seems the tides of fads really are against them it all can collapse quickly. This is pretty much how Mussolini took over.
Remember those eras when men were not fragile and readily gave rise to their feelings -- and women were rape fodder?
Wonder Woman, Salt and the Black Widow aside, women like these are free to express their extravagantly silly notions because of the forbearance of some men and the protection of others.
Ask a black woman who was raised in a culture where male forbearance and tolerance do not dominate:
"...research by the Black Women’s Blueprint, Inc., a New York City-based civil and human rights organization of women and men, reports that 60 percent of Black women have been sexually assaulted by the time they are 18 years old." http://www.blackpressusa.com/rape-and-the-myth-of-the-strong-black-woman/
Their error is that they asked the wrong question. It is not a male/masculinity issue.
The question they should have asked is "what roll did feelings play...", THAT is the question. The entire issue and in fact everything from before, through, and since the election have all been about FEELZ and not about logic. The left is all upset because of feelz. They feel they should have won. They feel afraid since they lost. They feel worried and upset. They know actually very little to cause actual worry but the feel instead.
Based on what I have observed of those on the left, this unease due to their feelz is not a gender issue but a "liberal" issue and affects men and women of the left equally.
Loathsome as these two harpy crones may be, I don’t know that their left-wing critique of male fragility differs all that much from the right-wing critique of it.
Larry J - I read "Killing Rommel." Fascinating historical novel about British, Aussie, and New Zealand soldiers who would go behind enemy lines in jeeps in the North Africa campaign. These guys were serious, tough, and resourceful.
What is the line from Shakespeare---"A tale full of sound and fury, told by an idiot, signifying nothing"? That can apply to most of what Amanda Marcotte and her ilk have to say.
I wonder if the women under the "protection" of ISIS fighters speak like this? I wonder if the refugee women in Bidi Bidi in Uganda speak like this about the Somalian fighters they encountered during their exodus?

Eclipse is on in San Francisco.
Sometimes the fog is just right to comfortably see a bite out of the sun.

The left is really good at scaring itself silly. There were manipulators behind all this, but I suspect the engineers of all that are figuring the hysteria has gone out of control.
I wonder what would happen if they were deliberately frightened by the genuine article.
I am always entertained by how some people, but this seems especially true of feminists, will describe things the opposite of reality--in order to what? Make it so? Make it so that they don't have to deal with the world as it is? Questions.
""I think the single greatest threat, and I’ll say to humanity, at the moment is male fragility, and men just not being able to process their feelings of insecurity, their feelings of anger...""
Let me translate/Fisk this:
When men refuse to capitulate to what they see as unreasonable demands, this actually means they have confidence in their beliefs, not being so emotionally fragile that they can't admit they are wrong.
Sure, the phenomena of being too insecure to admit you are wrong is a thing. Most of the time, you just have not made your case. Using cheap psychological trickery of claiming, "if you are strong, you will give us what we want," would only work on a very weak person or an idiot.
These two women would seriously make a straight man consider going gay.
But, to be fair, the marching "neo-nazis" of Charlottesville ain't exactly a group of Cary Grant look-alikes. More like, evil versions of Larry the Cable guy.
Why can't we focus on the 315 Million Americans in the normal zone of reasonably attractive looks and reasonably mainstream views?
I am not a psychologist, so this comes simply from my experience: people that frequently talk about themselves and fret about how others see them often are insecure.
Why do people ever read anything Marcotte types?
She's been a bad joke for, what, over a decade now?

These two human beings are totally un-representative of the glorious female species. No normal healthy women think like this. My God.
I have said this before, I will say it again: To all young men - at college, please do not sleep with leftist women, even the good-looking ones. You will be jumping right into the briar patch (no pun intended), and things will turn out badly (false claims of rape, angst, psycho-games, etc.)

Just in from Paul Ryan (excerpt):
" The immediate condemnations from left, right, and center affirmed that there is no confusion about right and wrong here. There are no sides. There is no other argument. We will not tolerate this hateful ideology in our society.
I still firmly believe this hate exists only on the fringes. But so long as it exists, we need to talk about it. We need to call it what it is. And so long as it is weaponized for fear and terror, we need to confront it and defeat it.
That is why we all need to make clear there is no moral relativism when it comes to neo-Nazis. We cannot allow the slightest ambiguity on such a fundamental question. "
<
" This is a test of our moral clarity. The words we use and the attitudes we carry matter. Yes, this has been a disheartening setback in our fight to eliminate hate. But it is not the end of the story. We can and must do better. We owe it to Heather Heyer, and to all our children.

Amanda Marcotte is within normal limits. I could see some guy nodding and saying "Jeez,I never thought of that before. Can I buy you another drink?" The other one has a strong Leona Helmsley vibe. I wonder if they're related. She probably doesn't get all that much love and respect from the men she encounters. I bet the women in her circle also think she's a bit of a pill......,.I'd like to see those women have a frank, open discussion on the pros and cons of Winnie Mandela.
I think the early Nazis were not so much advocating racial superiority but rather they were appealing to feelings of racial victimhood and nurturing grievances. They spent a lot of time talking about how unfairly the Germans were treated. They remind me of some other people I have met recently.
Now it's raining here. Special apparatus useless.

I see that the ideology behind segregation and the Nazi is the same as the one behind Planned Parenthood, namely eugenics. I see the American blacks are being wiped out on this continent as a race by people holding banners saying "Blacks Lives Matter" and "I Support Planned Parenthood". And the same group loathes the American worker which includes black workers. So what do old statues and old labels matter? The new reality is lost in clutter when we try to relive old battles as if we could get a new victory out of a re-enactment.

Your side frightens me much more than the small group of losers who call themselves neo-Nazis - because no university is giving out scholarships to neo-Nazis. Nobody is applauding them. That antifa chick holds beliefs every bit as repellent.

If men "process their feelings verbally" they get called whiners by the feminists. "Oh boohoo, 96% of workplace deaths are male, 90% of inmates are male, 75% of suicides, 80% of chronically homeless, 99.9% of war deaths etc. Suck it up and acknowledge your male privilege!"
If they don't process their feelings verbally, they get criticized for not doing so. It's a silly, stupid catch 22.
Personally, I take all my intersexual behavioral cues from the movie "McLintock".

This is understandable. It is good to be the king. It helps if the king knows how to be the King, when succumbing to these powerful temptations. One cannot be Louis XIV while being a feminist.

I thought the standard right-wing explanation for Islamic terrorism is male fragility: societies so corrupt that a small number of wealthy men control most wealth and most women, leaving the rest of the men to lash out in sexual frustration against the infidel.
Unkown admitted a couple of months ago that he is just here to troll, insult, and attempt to mock. Don't waste your time.
"I thought the standard right-wing explanation for Islamic terrorism is male fragility"
In truth, quite a large number of known jihadis have women. Even M. Atta apparently had women after him at various points. No doubt there is that lack of women that affects some, but certainly not all, and most definitely not their class of leaders and preachers, who all seem well set for females.
"I thought the standard right-wing explanation for Islamic terrorism is male fragility"
Liberals are well documented as not being able to understand the right as well as the right understands them. So don't believe everything you think. Though it certainly doesn't help to have lots of military aged men with no hope of finding a wife around looking for adventure. Nobody claims that is the reason for it all. But you guys would have to give up half your friendships if you admitted to understanding anything we say, even though we speak plainly.

"Attempt" is right. It's insults are like being attacked by someone throwing cotton balls.
"I thought the standard right-wing explanation for Islamic terrorism is male fragility." Sorry, like many other "right-wing explanations," it's actually the standard left-wing version of the right-wing explanation. The standard right-wing explanation is that the prime cause is Islam itself, you know the Quran and stuff.
For a semi-lefty version of Islamism as a male problem, see Riesebrodt, Pious Passion. Maybe a little tough going for proles.
The standard right-wing explanation is that the prime cause is Islam itself, you know the Quran and stuff.
A distinction without a difference. Isn't the standard right-wing explanation that Islam makes men violent, which is just another word for fragile?
I couldn't watch more than a minute of it: what new insight do they bring? I find it hard to take them seriously.
In truth, quite a large number of known jihadis have women.
In the next life if not this. But seriously, in societies in which most men have no useful purpose and therefore cannot attract women, jihadism offers some kind of purpose and occasionally some attractiveness.
violent, which is just another word for fragile
Um, no. Those words are not alike. They are not interchangeable and no one but you thinks that they even remotely are.
Y'all are acting like "right-wing" is something to be ashamed of.
Almost like you're fragile.
What gets my testosterone percolating is the Gender Gap. Women are one of those groups, like African-Americans, Jews and Gays, who have been victimized by the State over the centuries; and yet, like the groups, politically they overwhelmingly act as handmaidens to the State.
"Isn't the standard right-wing explanation that Islam makes men violent, which is just another word for fragile?"
Violent is not fragile. The Romans were remarkably violent, as their quite robust society was set up for constant warfare, every year after the plowing was done and before the harvest was due, if they were not themselves being invaded, they chose an enemy and went off to do them damage.
The Bedu even prior to Islam were living in raiding societies. Islam took on their social norms.
Isn't the standard right-wing explanation that Islam makes men violent...
It is violent as it is practiced. It has not undergone a "softening" or reformation like Christianity did. There are many that practice it in a non-violent way and choose to interpret it in a non-violent way but they are the exception to the norm. Islam is a religion of conquest and conversion with a sword versus Christianity which is conversion through discussion. Big difference, but you likely know this a fend ignorance to attempt to score cheep political points.
Violent is not fragile
There is productive violence and futile violence. Productive violence is what brought an end to the war in Japan. Futile violence is running people down with cars, like in Barcelona or Faber College at the end of Animal House.
" But seriously, in societies in which most men have no useful purpose and therefore cannot attract women"
But this does not explain most jihadis. It does not really explain most traditional Islamic societies, especially the extremely violent ones (such as, say, the Tausog or the Bedu) that are aggressive vs their neighbors - the immense loss of males to inernecine violence is such that there is always a surplus of women.
Rather, it seems to me that the impact of Islam is because it carries with it the structure to license this harassment of the infidel.

Though you are now changing the basis of the discussion, we can work with this.
OK, in your mind is Antifa violence productive or futile?
"There is productive violence and futile violence."
There is also traditional violence, violence as a way of life, or a major part of a way of life.
This is a foreign or ancient concept I know, but it does exist. We moderns can have some trouble with understanding it, but that is our failure. It does not suit our categories.
"Islam is a religion of conquest and conversion with a sword"
Islam has done both conversion through discussion and conversion by the sword. This is not a simple distinction. There are many faces of Islam, and many implementations of Islam. There are very different flavors of Islam even within a single mode of Sunni thought. A lot of this depends on the underlying society.
What is universal is the always-present latent license to aggression that are all over the Koran and especially in the Hadiths, and in the standard precedents of legal judgement.
Todd asked,
"OK, in your mind is Antifa violence productive or futile?"
Good question.
" A Houston man has been charged with trying to plant explosives at the statue of Confederate officer Richard Dowling in Hermann Park, federal officials said Monday.

Schneck was arrested Saturday night after a Houston park ranger spotted him kneeling in bushes in front of the Dowling monument in the park, Martinez said.

Schneck was holding two small boxes that included a viable explosive, a timer, wires connected to a homemade detonator, a battery and an explosive compound, according to the statement."
Traditional violence is part of every military; it's neither exclusively foreign or aancient but quite here and now. Gang violence is also a part of every major city in the US. It's the recent increase political violence that's notable. The "fragility" of men nonsense is just two women showing us they nothing about violence or men.
"When confronted Saturday night in the park, he tried to drink some of the liquid explosives but spit it out"
Darwin thwarted..
I'll state the proposition cleanly: Islamist men are fragile and therefore engage in violence to compensate. Discuss.
"Traditional violence is part of every military"
This is not true actually. Quite a few militaries have lacked aggression or even willingness to fight. Modern militaries are quite often simply bureaucratic structures going through the motions.
And military violence is not a bit the same thing as social violence. It comes down to why one fights. A traditionally violent society will auto-generate aggression versus its alien neighbors, essentially whenever they detect weakness. And this occurs at a low level, not on the plane of statesmen.
Gang violence in the US is, though not that of a traditionally violent society. In the US this stuff is merely the result of indiscipline. These people do not organize warbands to obtain temporary power over a set of victims, and would not even if they could, they lack the ability to self-organize. They are not Bedu or Tausog or Romans.
"Islamist men are fragile and therefore engage in violence to compensate."

is Antifa violence productive or futile?
A good question. As we discussed here the other day, for twenty years Antifa’s raison d'être was beating the hell out of nonviolent lefties in Democratic strongholds. This seemed utterly futile to me, but then again I’m not a sadist. Then Antifa got the bright idea of beating up right-wingers instead, and of course the media reported it when right-wingers fought back. That violence seems just as futile to me, but then again, Revolution 101 is making the actions of a few thousand people seem like the actions of millions with the help of a docile and dopey media.
Violence is the purpose of every military ( and crucial to all police forces) if some pussified Euro army doesn't live up to it's purpose then that makes it a failed or faux military. I'd say gang violence has a longer tradition than democracy. Violence is part of this and every society. It may be well organized or poorly directed it may be enthusiastically pursued or avoided but it's deeply engrained in mankind. Civilization directs it: it orders it toward a positive end but today we are cultivating neo-barbarism where violence replaces reason and free speech is just the prelude to a riot.
"if some pussified Euro army doesn't live up to it's purpose then that makes it a failed or faux military."
This describes many armies throughout history, not just modern Euro armies.
One interesting case are the Mogul (Muslim!) armies of the late 18th century.
Actually, twenty years ago I'd have hit on either one of them after a couple dozen drinks.

Of course. But the scholar bit was not really baked in to the structure of the religion. They were never really scholars and their philosophical/theological tradition never amounted to more than extremely detailed textual analysis.
But warfare is in there in detail.

Hear, hear! The GOP accepts the DNC stereotypes and apologizes for it, instead of filling every hostile ear with a richly-deserved recitation of democrat party ugliness. The GOP has had a number of prominent members who have excellent skills of debate and argument, like Graham and Boehner and Cantor, yet they never spoke up to defend themselves or their constituents. Boehner, Ryan and the others hand over their lunch money, but Trump punches back twice as hard.
More to the point, the warfare part never went away.
All Muslim societies fell into intellectual paralysis long ago, and many of the big ones into military sclerosis (such as the Moguls), but any number of semi-barbaric Islamic societies kept the warrior thing going. There were regular jihads and "Mad Mullahs" all over the colonized Muslim bits of the world. Some of these were long running, like the Wahabi Ikhwan, a military society that was a good model for ISIS, Al Qaeda and the Taliban.

This post is starting to find the core of the issue. Purpose. In a society without work or a need to provide a safe and supported living environment to attract a mate men are going to be more severely challenged. Women will not be as out of place there.
But Molly, I am a Trumper!
The question on the video:
What role did masculinity play at Charlottesville?
Answer:
All of it.
Mostly, anyway. The vast majority of the neo-nazi marchers were men. The majority of violent resisters were men. Most of the police were men. The oddball militias were men. Many of the nonviolent protesters (clergy, etc.) were men. That's a lot of men. I'm betting most of the media were men as well.
And most of those men showed a lot of restraint, when you think about it. But not all, unfortunately.

I think there are a few reasons to explain Jihadis. One is that in modern society there are really very few ways for males to really test themselves. To really find out if you have courage and mettle or not. There are no real rights of passage anymore. They are even going after things like team sports now and not keeping score. There are very few legitimate paths.
Rather, it seems to me that the impact of Islam is because it carries with it the structure to license this harassment of the infidel.
This is another reason. There are always people around who want to tell other people what to do. It is why you find democrats and ISIS on the same side so often.
I’m feeling fragile over this invention of a new Archimedian Paradox for how to grab them by their non-existent dicks.
The notion that there is any moral or empirical equivalency between the political violence of the right and the left in the United States is simply wrong. It is wrong empirically. And just as importantly, it is wrong because when it comes to the use of violence, there is a massive difference in values between the left and the right.
