I haven't done it or seen it, but this is how people sometimes get off oil rigs at sea. They have to hold on to a roped dinghy while a rig crane hoist them on to the ship that will take them back to shore.

What this guy did was less safe.

Usually this is done by standing on the hook and holding on to the wire.

Grue is french for crane or prostitute. Apparently they meant the bird.
