Fake news about fake news.

Rush Limbaugh, today:
Three CNN members of the new investigative unit have resigned, i.e., been fired. One of them is a guy named Thomas Frank...  the name might ring a bell. This guy wrote a book way back when called What’s the Matter With Kansas or What’s Wrong With Kansas? He is an active, uber-leftist. He despises conservatism, and his book about What’s the Matter with Kansas, What’s Wrong With Kansas, was his befuddlement over how middle class Americans in Kansas would vote Republican and thereby vote against their own self-interest....
That caught my attention. What?! Thomas Frank — What's the Matter With Kansas Thomas Frank — was one of the 3 guys fired for the fake news on CNN?! That didn't seem right.

Later in the show, Rush was all...
You know, I was afraid of this. I know that there are two Thomas Franks, and I asked somebody to find out for me today, I was in a time crunch, and I said, “Find out for me if the Thomas Frank at CNN is the same Thomas Frank who wrote the book on Kansas,” and they came back, “Yes, same guy.” But I know there’s a second one out there. So now Snerdley is getting Drive-By calls saying it’s a different Thomas Frank. The author who wrote the book on Kansas is not the Thomas Frank who was on the CNN investigative unit and got blown out, fired, canned, resigned, what have you. So my bad. I thought I had nailed that down. There are two of ’em. One of them may be Franks, the last name may be Franks, Thomas Franks and Thomas A. Frank, I’m not sure which, but I know there are two of them. And I thought they were the same.
Well, how exactly are you better than CNN if you run with something without checking it out competently? I don't see how "I was in a time crunch" is an acceptable excuse.

By the way, Thomas Frank's newest book — "Listen, Liberal: Or, What Ever Happened to the Party of the People?" — is excellent.

And as long as I'm talking about the 3 fired CNN guys, let me show you the ludicrous final paragraph of the Washington Post column by Eric Wemple, "Three CNN employees resign over retracted story on Russia ties":
Critics will long cite this episode as evidence that CNN is precisely what Trump has called it — “fake news.” Yet the departure of three journalists immediately following a mangled story provides a counterpoint to this particular slander. Purveyors of fake news, after all, don’t take drastic personnel moves following a bogus story. They rejoice in it.
They got caught! Publicly. They had to put on a show that they don't tolerate fake news. That's exactly what a purveyor of fake news would do.

Maybe Rush was mimicking CNN by running with a story before checking it out. It would fit his performance art approach.

They want us, the consumers, to really really care about the difference between a news source nobody has ever heard of, that just makes up stories and puts them on the internet for your crazy friend from high school to repost on Facebook....vs the news sources that have huge budgets and white house passes and sponsor presidential debates and takes stories from their sources and put them on the internet for other journalists to cover, and sometimes even for special prosecutors to get appointed over.

MayBee বলেছেন...

What CNN did is obviously a much worse thing than some Macedonian spammer saying Michelle Obama unfriended Hillary Clinton on Facebook.

But they want us to care more about the latter, and they call it fake news as if it's a thing.

Bay Area Guy বলেছেন...

Thomas "What's the matter with Kansas" Frank is very good. One of my favorite liberals.

He's really zoned in on how the white-working class has been shafted by the cultural elites of the Democratic Party, and have gradually migrated to the GOP -- over economic issues. He also notes this is happening with minority working class folks -- albeit at a much slower pace.

More Thomas Frank, less Paul Krugman, I say.

p.s. Getting the name (Thomas Frank) wrong isn't fake news. That's just a mistake. Not a big deal.

p.p.s The Russian "Collusion" story is fake news -- a total propaganda campaign, generated by loyal Obama leakers, fueled by idiots at the NYTimes, WAPost and CNN.

johns বলেছেন...

Rush Limbaugh's mistake is not comparable to that of CNN because 1) Rush is a talk show host with well-known right-of-center opinions, while CNN is a "news" network; 2) getting two people with the same name mixed up is not comparable to running a scurrilous story about the President; and 3) Rush's mistake was minor--who cares which Thomas Frank was working at CNN? Eric Lichtblau is a Pulitzer-winning former NYT reporter who should have known better.

And Wemple should be bemoaning the state of journalism, not defending CNN

CWJ বলেছেন...

No, Rush screwed up. Period. His explanation was pretty lame.

"Maybe Rush was mimicking CNN by running with a story before checking it out. It would fit his performance art approach."

Not a chance, because you've got completely unwarranted collateral damage to Thomas Frank. And if that was done on purpose, it's even worse.

IMHO CNN's prompt action and ouster of journalists contrasts favorably with Fox's handling of the Stephen Rich story.

Erick Lichtblau was quite celebrated at the NYT.

Earnest Prole বলেছেন...

Sounds like Rush is back to being a junkie again.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Rush is under a lot of pressure to churn out 3 hours a day on the fly. He has ways of finessing it and making the finessing feel like part of the fun of getting us the latest and working very hard right down to the wire. And he's doing commentary, not news reporting.

He did correct the error relatively quickly. But he was doing a story about fake news and did fake news, and as with the fake news that CNN stumbled into — making a show, seeking ratings — a specific individual's name was carelessly besmirched. It's especially bad on the radio because people could turn the show on or off at any point. They often don't hear the correction.

And Rush's characterization of Frank as "an active, uber-leftist" is also pretty unfair, though it's characterizable as a matter of opinion.

I encourage you to click on my Thomas Frank tag and read some of the posts about "Listen, Liberal." It's serious analysis of the problems with today's liberal politics. Written prior to the Trump phenomenon, it's quite prescient.

traditionalguy বলেছেন...

Nobody messes with Althouse. Not even a same birthday mate. But the show must go on.

The new Spicer replacement lady did a perfect live video Press Briefing today , and she destroyed CNN. It was hard to watch.I think CNN has finally gotten the Donald to morph into a Clint Eastwood very Dirty Harry. But Trump made CNN an example of what not to do to him.

Bay Area Guy বলেছেন...

Glenn Greenwald -- another left-winger I like -- wrote a good article today on CNN's bogus Russian obsession

Money graf:

"BUT CNN IS hardly alone when it comes to embarrassing retractions regarding Russia. Over and over, major U.S. media outlets have published claims about the Russia Threat that turned out to be completely false — always in the direction of exaggerating the threat and/or inventing incriminating links between Moscow and the Trump circle. In virtually all cases, those stories involved evidence-free assertions from anonymous sources that these media outlets uncritically treated as fact, only for it to be revealed that they were entirely false."

Thomas Frank's book "Listen, Liberal......." should be required reading for the entire Democratic party. I don't agree with some of Frank's solutions, but his analysis of today's Democratic party is right on the money. Hillary and company committed every Democratic sin he identifies.

Fen বলেছেন...

"How is Rush better than CNN in this regard?"

Simple - Rush explained the DETAILS of why he got it wrong, he didn't just retract with some boilerplate BS like CNN did.

We don't expect people to be perfect, they will make mistakes. But when they do they need TO EXPLAIN THEMSELVES so that we, the information consumer, can judge for ourselves whether it's a plausible good faith mistake.

CNN REFUSES to do this, so it looks more like systemic corruption of an information broker. CNN DOES NOT TRUST US to decide on our own whether 1) their reporters just made an honest mistake or 2) they got caught in a deliberate lie and had to cut bait.

Information brokers like stock brokers. Assume your stock broker fails to short sell when you asked. What is his reason? He explains he was in the Emergency Room? Or does he float some vague company apology without any explanation of what went wrong? One is an accident, the other a cover up. Of what?

It's entirely plausible RUSH mixed up two people with the same name. Someone here on Althouse did exact same thing - picked the wrong Thomas Frank.

It's entirely plausible his research staff screwed it up too, even though they already knew their were two and we checking. Who here has never double checked something and STILL got it wrong?

CNN has not been forthcoming about what specifically caused them to pull the story. Nor have they explained what led to mistakes (?) that made it necessary to yank the story.

I think it's because CNN does not want us in their kitchen to see how the sausage is made. I think it's because CNN knows they could not withstand public scrutiny of just how fast and loose they play with the news.

Fake real estate listings long precede Zillow.

When some years ago, we applied to re-finance the loan, the loan officer balked because she claimed to have a comparable two houses up the street that had more square footage, two more bedrooms & a bathroom. The only problem with her analysis is that we were good friends with the couple who moved in after the "improvements" were made. It turns out that those bedrooms, bathroom, & square footage were all below grade in a very subdivided basement.

We got the loan.

I happened to be listening to Rush when he said this, and I thought it was wrong. The book author is too elevated to be a CNN reporter. But I googled "Thomas Frank disambiguation" and the only Thomas Frank showing up was the author -- the disambiguation went to Thomas Franck different spelling.

I then googled "Thomas Frank CNN" and got images (photos) that were clearly of a different man (different age) than the author Thomas Frank (photo on wikipedia page).

This took me -- I don't know -- 10 minutes.

I know Limbaugh relies heavily on staff for this (though he pretends it's just himself and Cookie); but staff let him down and should have waved him off. It was a minor point (not really relevant to the main thing he wanted to put out about media bias), but it should have been fact checked. And the error does undermine Limbaugh in the same way (though not to the same degree) that CNNs error undermines its credibility.

Not to the same degree because Limbaugh can reasonably fall back on the claim, "I'm just an entertainer." But it certainly undercuts his claim to be "America's truth detector".

IMHO, for CNN to have done what Rush did would require the president or the editor to take to the airwaves and apologize, correct the error, give a reason for this (and other) errors that was a)believeable and b)answer all of the obvious questions.

Answer number 2 about how this is different, Rush cares about his credibility.

43.And they continue to dig deeper:

Unreliable Source Brian Stelter himself wrote the story on the firings and included this bit of weasel wisdom:

“In a staff meeting Monday afternoon, investigative unit members were told that the retraction did not mean the facts of the story were necessarily wrong. Rather, it meant that “the story wasn’t solid enough to publish as-is,”

https://amp.cnn.com/money/2017/06/26/media/cnn-announcement-retracted-article/index.html

Upon being called out on this Dan Rather bit of “false but accurate” hokum (and maybe thinking about his own job), he quickly followed with this tweet:

“Brian Stelter @brianstelter

To be clear, nothing in my story should be taken to imply that Scaramucci is under investigation. “

As for comparing Rush's name gaffe with this engineered smear that even CNN admitted shortcutted around standards of "journalism, fact-checking and legal review"....

I think the difference with Rush Limbaugh is intent, and scale He did not make up a fake story to impugn Thomas Frank. He didn't gin up the story because he wanted to nail Mr Frank. He made a sloppy error because it appealed to his confirmation bias. And it was one factual error, not a catenary of falsehoods. The CNN piece was not one bit of sloppy fact checking, it was not jumping too soon to one factual error. It was assembled carefully.

What a way to miss the point. You hit on something, and then went all scattershot. Regardless of who pays for what, Oxy's pretty legal. Others, even non-toxic alternatives that decrease the death rate, are not. I'll leave it to you (or maybe Limblown's gumshoeing to figure out what those are. Oxy's got big pharma manufacturing it. Maybe once weed profits rival those of prescription opioid manufacturers' the government will listen to the former instead of the latter.

I've taken opioids for pain before, you dumbass. I've taken them the way they're supposed to be taken - as short-acting opioid/acetaminophen combinations once every few hours - only if you need them. Long-acting opioids have no clinical role in any pain other than for cancer, pretty much. But the physicians were marketed to by an unregulated pharma industry - unregulated by your conservative congress critters who HATE the FDA with a passion, and here we are.

Now there are efforts to undo the damage (and some, to be fair, had to do with physicians who refused to realize that pain management was its own speciality). But it's also government ONCE AGAIN to the rescue: State databases to check out who's doctor shopping so the pharmacies and physicians can see who was and who wasn't offered #100 count of these three days ago.

And the other governments coming to the rescue? The states! (Cue Western cavalry music here). Yeah, that story came and went quickly and Fox shied away from it. By comparison, the media has been braying about Russian for months now.

"I still only vaguely know what it is, and that's because of lefties bringing it up here."

Lefties like to bring it up here so they can dishonestly claim it's equivalent to their ridiculous Russia fantasies.

Well then you don't know wtf you are talking about.

Why, yes I do, actually.

And you are in no place to judge.

I'm in a place to arbitrate. Judging is for people a bit too emotionally invested.

You're no better than the jackass who blames Flirty Girl for being gang raped. And then mocks her for getting knocked up.

Not sure what this is supposed to mean but I hope it makes sense to you.

One would think that anyone who has been on pills to manage pain would appreciate how addictive they are and have some sympathy for those that become addicts while trying to manage chronic pain. Instead, you equate them to Crack Whores.

One would think that anyone who has sold his soul to Uncle Same would appreciate the desperation of a crack whore and have some sympathy for those that become addicted to street versions of the same prescription drugs that people like you use to get high. Instead, you proclaim your superiority to them.

What a sad pathetic creature you are.

No sadness or need of empathy here. Just pointing out the many blind spots of what you're missing.

The reports keep repeating that the article was "bad reporting". I call bullshit. This was not bad, or careless. It's all an intentional lie. With President Trump in charge, the media has long ago given up on reporting facts. Am I the only one that has noticed, not a single faked scandle has a basis in reality, (add judges and prosecutors to the list of liars)

Here's an interesting question for our resident Lefties - What evidence would convince you that the "Trump Colluded With Russia To Steal Election" narrative was complete bullshit ginned up to mobilize demoralized Dems while handicapping Trump?

Go on the record now. Draw the line you won't cross. Do it now before Project Veritas releases a 2nd 3rd and 4th round of damning videotape.

What would it take to convince you it was all a lie?

Rush continued his protect Trump at all costs by reviewing a shakey claim by two journalists that Michael Flynn was set up because he supported a sexual harassment claim against Deputy Director (now acting Director) Andrew McCabe of the FBI. Forget that Flynn lied to the Vice President about his financial involvement with the Russians and the Turks. And where has this story been for the past year?

Sadly the King of Talk Radio has abandoned his conservative principles to support a basically dishonest President whose personal lawyer is a crook, big time, stealing from charities he runs - and his son-in-law is riding involvement with the President for personal gain for his real estate company.

Populist Trump supporters who were looking for less elitism in government are now witnessing more of the same.

Lichtblau has received a Pulitzer. He should be ashamed to show his face in public. He should have been the adult in the room. Instead, the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist was fired, ignominiously, by a second-rate cable network.
As far as I can tell, this disgrace was not an outlier. Lichtblau, Frank, and Harris violated all the rules of good journalism, the rules that are supposed to make them better than "fake news" outlets like the National Enquirer. They used a single, shaky, anonymous source, who supplied them with unconfirmed and unconfirmable "facts".
I don't know what Trump is doing to America, but he is definitely destroying the elite profession of MSM journalism.

While assuming they were the same guy was foolish, especially because of th relatively common names, the difference is Limbaugh offered an immediate retraction when he found out he was wrong. Limbaugh is an entertainer, and makes no secret of his political affiliation, CNN pretends to be a news organization.

That is screw up by Limbaugh. I considered that it was performance art, but the transcript just reads like a completely boneheaded mistake- you don't have to ask someone to check such a detail- it literally takes 10 seconds to do so using Google, and what makes it worse is that Limbaugh knew there were two Thomas Franks active in political writing, not one.

And Ms. Althouse instincts are correct- on the surface, there is no reason to fire these people and not fire the people who, for example, wrote the false story about what Comey was going to say in his testimony, but the difference is that management could literally see the organization's reputation for truthfulness was suffering a catastrophic hit day after day, and these three hapless idiots just happened to get caught at the latest instant. It won't help CNN- they are beyond hopeless on this Russian hoax- they will go down with the ship on this one, kicking out a rat or two along the way.

What would it take to convince you it was all a lie?

Ten years of tax returns proving no Russian financial conflicts - let alone those already admitted to by Eric Trump.

Shouldn't be too much to ask of a lead birther conspiracist like your Leader.

CNN's Thomas Frank, not to be confused with book-writing Thomas Frank, whose most recent book is, "What's the Matter With Me, and Why is the State's Mailed Fist So Far Up My Butt?" It's a real page turner.
