In Spain, 3 women face charges of "crimes against religious sentiment" for carrying an image of female genitalia on a platform in a procession through the streets of Seville in the style of religious processions carrying an image of the Virgin Mary.

The idea — by the "Sisterhood of the blessed rebellious vagina to the exploitation of precariousness" (Hermandad del Sagrado Coño Insumiso a la Explotación a la Precariedad) — was to protest sex discrmination in the workplace.
The case will be heard by a Seville magistrate after a previous ruling in favour of the protesters was overturned on appeal by the Association of Christian lawyers (AEAC). The AEAC said in a statement that the action was "vexatious". It claimed that the group shouted slogans such as "the Virgin Mary can abort too" and that it used prayers such as the Creed or the Hail Mary, replacing lines with "sexual, rude and abusive" expressions....

In the original hearing a judge ruled that "not believing in the dogmas of a religion and manifesting it publicly falls under the freedom of expression." But that ruling has been overturned on appeal after a judge found this week that there was evidence the group had deliberately set out to insult the "religious sentiments of Catholics" by making "a mockery of the Easter procession" using "rude and offences slogans", said magistrate Luis Gonzaga de Oro-Pulido.
As in the United States, it's not enough to have a right to freedom of speech. You also need courts that won't say — as the Spanish court did — that the right "is not absolute, but has its limits... including ideological and religious freedom." That is, the freedom to speak is viewed as limited by the "freedom" of other people not to be offended. Maybe some of the Americans who like to say things like that can be moved to rethink it by looking this case in Spain.

Unfortunately, they won't get the point. It's ok to have opposing views just so long as they are VALID views.

Catholics say that Virgin Mary, The Queen of Heaven, was conceived in a woman without sex with a man, but directly by the Holy Spirit. I suppose it was a trial run for Jesus.

It is difficult enough to accept Jesus' incarnation from scripture. Why they had to add the second immaculate conception story 1800 years later is suspect. So I guess it needs legal protection.

I'd like to think so, Althouse but no, they won't rethink it. They'll think Spain's restrictions on freedom of speech are outrageous because it's OK to offend Catholics. Their own restrictions on freedom of speech are fine because it is not OK to offend leftists.

I think it should be pretty clear by now that the Left's position on free speech is entirely relative. Conservatives do not have free speech rights; progs do.

That Europe doesn't hold to the expansive view of free speech enshrined in the American 1st amendment shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who follows European news. Those Yerps are always censoring somebody. Preachers holding forth on the Biblical view of homosexuality in Britain. Wearing a crucifix, yarmulke, or hijab to work in France. Or, here, insulting Nuestra Senora.

Even as a believing Catholic, I say let these obnoxious assholes have at it with their sacrilege, but preserve the expansive view of free speech contained in the 1st Amendment. The Virgin Mary is beyond their harm now, & they will get theirs in due time.

I think that presupposes some kind of rational thinking pattern on the part of people who are pushing for ideas like the banning of hate speech. Personally I'm not convinced we're dealing with people who are capable of well reasoned, rational thought. I think many of them really want complete authoritarianism.

traditionalguy: you have no understanding of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, which holds that the Virgin Mary was conceived free of original sin, not as a result of impregnation by the Holy Spirit. Not that your point has anything to do with the original post.

I'm always amused when people who think they are vastly superior intellectually to religious nuts make the most elementary boners.

Do you ever stop being imbecilic when it comes to Catholicism? You know, the catechism is available online in many places. Maybe you should take a look before you open your piehole.

The Virgin Mary was conceived by Ann & Joachim, her parents, just like we all are, by sex. The only difference is that Mary, preordained by God to be the Mother of Christ, was conceived without Original Sin, the only part of creation to be so blessed. That's what the term Immaculate Conception means.

I note how feminists like to reduce everything to the vagina these days. They have to display it, talk about it, wear ugly hats symbolizing it and use it as a symbol of rebelliousness, as if a body part is somehow "transgressive."

I remember how women used to bitch about how men had reduced them to their sex organs. Now it's considered progressive to do it to yourself.

OK, Sean. I just don't understand it right. It is only all about Sin and Sin consciousness. When marketing snake oil for Sin, the ad campaign needs somebody to model a Sin free life. Now, go out and continually work harder on it.

Building on what walter said:

Women seem to be identifying themselves more and more as just walking vaginas. Not even vaginas for the purposes of sex or procreation but just vaginas for the sake of vaginas.

So would it be OK for me, as a guy, a Spanish speaking guy, to start identifying these women as coños? or cunts?

Just trying to keep up with this insistence that we ask people what their preferred pronoun and descriptor is. and use it!!!

Spain has never had genuine freedom of speech. It's always been one lot repressing the other, more or less effectively.

Also, what is done symbolically there does not translate to the US. That manifestation was shocking not merely because of its anti-religious flavor, which is actually old hat in Spain in a way that it isn't in the US, but because it mocks, also, the civic tradition of the municipal procession.

I'd just add Adam and Eve were also conceived without sin. Mary, as the new obediant Eve, was also sinless. Mary is also prefigured by the Ark, sanctified in advance to contain the Word of God, made flesh.

YH is right it's easy to find this online.

Historically this doctrine arose from the visions of Our Lady of Lourdes.

One small further note: the contrast between our elevated Mary, the greatest of all saints and the impersonal dissociated genitalia could not be more stark. The progressive demeans women while claiming to speak for women.

Rick said...

The idea was to protest sex discrimination in the workplace.

What sort of discrimination is alleged?

It claimed that the group shouted slogans such as "the Virgin Mary can abort too"

Maybe the term "workplace" loses something in translation.

Humanitarian pornographers believe that women were suppressed from knowing and expressing the power of their genitalia. Their breasts. Their vagina. The hand that wields the scalpel. Really, it's about taxes, commodities, selective-child, and availability. Pornographers just want to gawk... and profit... and fuck with our minds.

I was going to comment on the sanitized translation of "coño", but John beat me to it. "Coño" does indeed mean "cunt" but its emotive force is different in Spain than in Latin America. Spaniards are notorious the Spanish-speaking world for their enthusiastic and creative use of vulgarity. As an expletive, "coño" gets tossed around a lot in Spain -- by men and women -- much as "fuck" is used in the United States today. Still vulgar, but its emotive force is lessened through overuse. However, there are still plenty of people -- especially in Latin America -- who take great umbrage at its use.

Sigh. I'll credit you for good faith, unlike tradguy who is Chuck-like in his ignorance. But Adam and Eve were not "conceived" at all. They were directly created, albeit without sin.

Historically this doctrine arose from the visions of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Again, no. When the Lady appeared to Bernadette in 1858, the dogma of the Immaculate Conception had already been confirmed years before, in 1854. And the theological concept of the Immaculate Conception had been discussed and celebrated in the Church for a thousand years and more.

The translation choices that The Telegraph made are very interesting:

- Vagina for coño, when cunt is much closer. (By the way, the Spanish word for vagina is...vagina.)
- Blessed for sagrado, when sacred is more accurate.
- Rebellious for insumiso, when unsubmissive is the cognate word.

While Mike is right that coño is not quite as vulgar in much of Spain compared to other places, it isn't exactly polite language, and to march under the banner of the "Sisterhood of the Unsubmissive Sacred Cunt" (singular) would be extremely provocative almost anywhere with a lot of Christians, especially with traditional Catholics. Whether such language should be illegal is a separate question, but it seems pretty clear that something equivalently provocative towards Islamic figures would generate a very strong reaction in EU jurisdictions.

What is The Telegraph up to?

Not a chance, ma'am. Does no one else remember Pussy Riot? The Left loved 'em, celebrated 'em--I remember the network TV coverage they got. Well, Pussy Riot pulled stunts just like this--the one they got busted hardest for (I think) involved them running into a church during a service and jumping up on an altar. Anyway the Ruskies busted them and the Left here celebrated them...the EXACT same Left that says Ann Coulter or whoever doesn't have a right to offend anyone.
