"The Women’s March on Washington is the first national demonstration in response to the election of Donald J. Trump."

"But already it has been criticized as a feel-good initiative, lacking focus and inclusiveness. Is this march truly a useful endeavor? Is there a better way for women to raise their concerns about a Trump administration?"

This is one of those forums at The New York Times. They got 8 "debaters" to write little essays answering the questions. I guess it's supposed to be a diverse group. But they're all women!

I doubt if many readers will click through to all of those. Don't you think most people — if they click at all — will choose the statement they most agree with? In that light, I'll let you know that I clicked on only one and it was "The March Will Only Reinforce the Divide in America." Excerpt:
I’m not a Trump supporter...
You've got to stake out your credibility.
... but having talked to and read interviews with some of the 56 percent of white women and 43 percent of women overall who are, I think it’s safe to say this kind of talk ["We march to ensure that no woman is forgotten"] will fool nobody.

Those women will – correctly – view the rally as organized by and for the women on the other side of the [vast geographic, education, class, racial and cultural chasm]....

[They] will... know that the marchers look down on them them as at best benighted fools and at worst racist haters. On her first show after the election Samantha Bee, one of the spokeswomen for the march, blasted “Caucasian Nation“ women for betraying their sex. Chelsea Handler, who is leading a satellite march in Hollywood-studded Sundance, described them as “self-mutilating.”...

The election was “a warning that feminism, as it has been defined, did not inspire enough people in enough places around the country,” Susan Chira wrote in The Times recently. Marchers should take heed.

Chelsea Handler, who is leading a satellite march in Hollywood-studded Sundance

Heh. You start with the dedicated people who were willing to show up and spend the day in Washington. Then you get to the people who agreed to participate but from the steps of their trailer. It always just ends with, like, Chelsea Handler leading a 'satellite march' at Sundance on her way to scoping out whatever they turned Cisero's into before things get going at Tao.

I've noticed a lot of ANSWER posters going up around town here in D.C. They are, of course, high quality, indicating they are highly organized and well-financed, and not coming from everyday common people.

They are the usual suspects - professional protesters, some of whom even place "want ads" looking to pay people to go protest.

The number of news stories on this event could fill a couple of thick volumes.

Meanwhile, the 100,000-200,000 women, men and children who will be there for the women-led March for Life -- and who have been there every year for four decades -- are complete invisible non-entities to the media.

Also, whereas D.C. is increasing its police presence for the leftist march, including a bunch of troops from the National Guard, and whereas these angry protesters will likely trash the place, the March for Life will once again be a totally peaceful, family-friendly event with people picking up after themselves and leaving behind a clean Mall and street.

Althouse, you singled out the contribution of Kay Hymowitz from the Manhattan Institute. I expect that most of your readers know the Manhattan Institute. For those who don't, it is a respected conservative think tank.

I thought Kay's contribution was fine. Like most leading conservatives, she had very good reason to not support Donald Trump. Also like most leading conservatives, she is chipping in to help out with the nascent Trump Administration's genuine efforts to move the federal government in a conservative direction.

Trump, and his campaign staff, and lots of his supporters all said at various times that the Trump campaign was not about conservatism, per se.

So I'd appreciate it if you'd clarify that you were not criticizing Kay Hymowitz's opening qualification that she "was not a Trump supporter." It's the Times' fault, and not Kay Hymowitz's, for not including one or more female Trump True Believers like Ann Coulter, or a male True Believer like Jeff Lord.

It is unreasonable to cast aspersions on people who have chosen other paths, other policies and other priorities without even pausing to consider the circumstances and reasons behind the other persons' thought processes.

It is unreasonable to call names and vilify because you can't get a group think, one size fits all, mentality imposed on other people.

Protest all you want. Just stop interfering in other people's lives who aren't interested in your priorities or your ineffective, shrill tantrums that you call protests and which turn other people off. This is how you got Trump and still refuse to even try to figure it out.

It is entirely reasonable for women to protest Trump's stated attitudes towards women.

When he speaks of women in general, the terms are broad, like "I respect women" and "I love women" or "when you're famous they let you do whatever..." How do you reconcile these attitudes you think he displays? Maybe you are confusing (deliberately or not) his disdain for certain people, like Rosie O'Donnell, for his "attitude towards women" without taking into consideration his actual treatment of women. Kind of like the way people say he "insulted Muslims" because he didn't like what the Khans said about him, or the way "he mocks the disabled" based on fake news about that reporter who disavowed his own published article.

So I am curious on what exactly this knowledge of Trump's "attitudes" is based.

Trump's stated attitudes towards women

Therein lies the rub, we don't know what Trump's attitude towards women actually is, all we know is what the media and the Left imagine/state it to be.

As a woman, I really don't care what this group thinks or wants, they do not represent me or my concerns, and appear to confuse vindication and vindictiveness.

"Comeuppance", by William Flesch discusses how we make sense of the social world in fiction, it very aptly translates to the post-election tumult the left is propagating. See pg 154 Comeuppance

The media will fawn as the marchers preen and virtue-signal, but at the end of the day, we, those whose very existence they refuse to acknowledge, have rendered them powerless; which has a pleasing symmetry.

Dust Bunny Queen said...

They are not doing this any more than Paul Ryan was expecting all men to agree with him when he said of Trump's comments “I am sickened by what I heard today”.

That isn't really a very good comparison since Ryan didn't on to vilify, call names, declare men who don't agree with him to be not "true" women as the more radical of the feminists do. Ryan didn't call men a traitor to their sex if they didn't give a flip about Trump's crude remarks.

Note: I am not defending Trump's decades old remarks that were made in a private conversation. I just don't care about those things because we have MUCH bigger fish to fry and other things of more general importance to focus upon.

Ryan and the Feminists have a right to their opinions and to voice their opinions. They don't have a right to demand that everyone must agree with those opinions....or else.

The liberals demand lockstep. The GOPe also seems to want to do the same.

THIS is WHY Trump won. People are sick of being pigeonholed, categorized and ostracized if they don't march in formation.

Rampant illegal immigration.
Drug cartels.

Decimation of the rural economies.
Runaway out of control government bureaucracies. IRS EPA
Over regulating by un-elected petty officials killing jobs.
Trade deficits.
Middle East out of control.
Obamacare debacle and destruction of the health care sector.
Taxation.
Collapsing social welfare systems.
Fraud and abuse in those systems.
VA system literally killing veterans.
Ineffective and dangerous foreign policy.
Weakening and destruction of our military.
Disgraceful education system crippling our youth.
On and on and on

I dealt with this pre-election. Every time the Left called him racist sexist homophobic xenophobic etc, I would ask for evidence. And every single time their response consisted of hand-waving "it's over there somewhere in that 1500 word article"

Shorter - Trump was talking about groupies. And Rosie who really is a nasty and despicable person. Same way he was talking about illegal immigrants and not all Mexicans or Muslim refugees.

Any daughter of mine was going to know how to change a tire, as well as make a living in a "men's" world. And shoot a gun. But, also, have a AAA membership. The funny thing is that I moved from a marriage to a feminist who could change a tire, and make a good living in the patriarchy, to a woman who has never changed a tire in her life, expecting (with good reason) for guys to line up for the chance to do it for her. Furtherest thing from a feminist, and willing to repeal the 19th Amdt if it meant depriving feminists of the vote, and electing more conservative candidates. Of course, she is on my AAA membership, because I don't have a tow company on speed dial like her ex did. And, grew up shooting, taught by a mother whom her father called "Annie Oakley". Maybe the commonality there - ability to possess and shoot firearms in their own defense.

Intellectually, I sympathize with feminists, having been raised by a mother whose female ancestors were active in the sufferage movement as early as the 1850s (and voted for Lincoln, while sending their husbands and sons to fight for him in the Civil War). But, more and more, I see the feminist movement being one of female supremacy, which I see as bad, if for no other reason than that I see men voting more rationally, and less emotionally. (And, as many know here, I partially blame modern feminism for much of the inner city violence we see today).

Captain Drano,

Come on! If "Free The Nipple" is for this march, who are we to stand in their way? Just think of how outstanding those free nipples will be on a cold January in DC!

DC merchants, vendors, hotels and porta-potty outfits owe Trump big-league.

Bruce's comment reminds me of a feminist I dated in college, back when I was an emotional liberal. Someone slit her tire while we were at a restaurant. When we came out, I offered to help her change the tire. She would have none of that! She was independent!

And then she attempted to attach the lug wrench to the tire's air valve... So I stepped in took over. "No worries, I did the exact same thing my first time" I said just so she wouldn't feel like an idiot. It was a little lie, and it got me laid that night. But I never looked at her the same way again.

That was a plea for God to give him the ability, since it doesn't seem he possesses it now :-D

Fen,
I went through similar when a grad student at Madison was hell bent on proving there are bus stops in rural Wisconsin. She was an Ag Econ major...

it's linking as Marches and Identity Politics are Futile, in title and hyperlinks. I'd say that's telling.

DBQ: my apologies, I misread your statement as "God gave" rather than "God give". Yeah your actual version makes perfect sense.

Kirk Parker, funny you should pick the one that stood out to me as well--"FREE THE NIPPLE"--I was so triggered by it that I thought about writing them and demanding they change their name as it traumatizes me. / (I had a double mastectomy, and all those hormonal birth control-popping feminists should just be thankful they have nipples to free--for now. Given them a few more years on HBC and many will have a scalpel physically "free the nipple" for them.)

Maybe the ladies should bring in Farrakhan to expound on the number 19.

Fen;

I want to assure -- promise you, actually -- that I DO INDEED have a need to constantly distance myself from Trump. I hope that makes you feel better. It makes me feel better. We can feel better together.

This is a bit like Henry Hyde's 'youthful indiscretion'. Neither 'young' nor 'youthful'.

Except for that one rude comment by Trump from years ago, I do not recall any of his speeches that could be called anti-woman. His focus on jobs can only help women (which 56% of white women apparently figured out). It is a gross assumption out of thin air that this is somehow bad for women. Dems have been claiming that republicans are waging a war on women for decades now, again with no evidence. Gotta rally the special interests!!

Sure is amusing. All these folks without a full chromosome set being yelled by that those that do. Given they gave birth to them they should be walking robots of what can I do for you mom? Here you go take all my money. Oops they already do. On top of that those with a full set seem to be able to lead those around by their equivalent of a p..sy with ease. Sometimes all it takes is a look and a wiggle. Granted, maybe to get this level of servitude, you need a traditional mom, in a traditional nuclear family explaining the facts of life to little Johnny and how to avoid diseases of the worst types. And avoid choosing lifestyles, even you have no choice that Castro locked up for their short remaining lives without care or relief, because quarantine was all he could do. The wonders of how socialism ends medical advances. That advance is jus too costly. We (except me) can do without.

Dear Female chauvinists, you have the power to end the abortion chambers.

Think of the babies! Think of the boys and girls who will grow up to be men and women, fathers and mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers.

That said, individual dignity, intrinsic value, and natural imperatives. Go forth and reconcile.

Marches, celebrity disrespect, comedian jokes will not convert any Trump voters to liberalism. These same factors may convert some libs to Trump supporters. Have already heard several women Hillary supporters say they are getting tired of this stuff, Also, "he is not even president yet".
Now if things improve enough that people can look around and see things are better, more statements positive of Trump, or at least, less negative, might be made.
Big problem for Trump is he will now be blamed for every terror attack in USA. I expect attacks like San Berdoo and Florida will happen. Diff will be in amount of news coverage.
Will be interesting to see news coverage on inauguration day, and response to it.

"One thing that they can unite about? Tying their sweaters around their waist to hide their fat asses."

Yes, I think that's a program calculated to bring together a nation even more bitterly divided than our own.

It's not as if Trump was steeped in redistributive change ideology.

On what grounds do these women oppose revitalization, rehabilitation, and reconciliation?

It's principled. It's internally, externally, and mutually consistent. It's positive progress.

Catastrophic Anthropogenic Girth Widening (CAGW) has global implications that affects both women and men. I propose a carbohydrate sequestration exchange scheme to mitigate the effects of sinking cushions, progressive medical conditions, frustrated libido, and seating surcharges.

Actions speak louder [so they say] than words. Trump has placed women in executive positions his entire career and is not patronizing to them but actually trusts that they can do the job. And, unlike some of his Democratic predecessors, has not made unwanted advances toward any women. Better to talk 'pussies' and deliver the goods than to pay lip service [no pun intended] to respect for women and then treat them like whores.

Yeah, 'cause nothing says "I am a serious adult with serious concerns" like wearing a Pussy Hat.

Imagine a Men's March filled with men wearing dick hats.

Maybe in a Gay Pride parade. You see a lot of weirdness there.
