That question crossed my mind a couple days ago. Meade and I independently decided the person of the year was obviously Donald Trump. Today, I see that Time did a readers' poll, and Bernie Sanders came in first, with 10.2%. Trump comes in at 19, with 1.8%, after Viola Davis, Jennifer Lawrence, and J.K. Rowling, who all got 1.9%. Women did surprisingly well, bizarrely well, on this poll, so it makes you wonder how Hillary Clinton did. She came in 26th, tied with Jorge Ramos, Amy Schumer, and American Pharoah. American Pharoah is a horse.
Now, when I was trying to come up with ideas for who could be person of the year and thought of Trump, I had to work to think of any other options. I came up with Vladimir Putin. And then: Caitlyn Jenner. You'd think the Time readers would have gone for Jenner, but in fact, Jenner is lower than Clinton, tied for 30th place. Putin is 14th.
When I look at Time's list and try to predict Time's behavior, I think the choice will be: Refugees. (6th in the poll.)

The Times reader poll seems to show the demographic corner they have painted themselves into with their ideological slant.
Person of the year has to be Baghdadi for his Caliph work in protecting poor Muslims from Yisidi heretics. He is famous for the saying, "the Only Good Yisidi is a Raped to Death Yisidi."
That rude Country Club Manager from Manhattan and Palm Beach has never even cleansed a people from the face of the earth.
Did you really think Time would do anything positive about Trump ?
al-Baghdadi
Caitlyn Jenner as Man of the Year? I'm not sure that would be appreciated.
Hate to say but I guess I will anyway: Time's Person of the Year has not been relevant for quite some time. I'm somewhat surprised that they are still in business.
Vladimir Putin. He has had more personal victories than anyone this year. Glad to see Hillary's out in the barn with the horses. Insult to the horse, of course. He's talented.
ISIS/ISIL
Which would really piss off our affirmative action POTUS.
Putin maybe
Yep, refugees. And that poor little urchin who washed up on the shore will be the representative, because pictures make it real.
No mention of whose policies might have led to the problem, or an examination of the pathologies of the culture these people are fleeing from.
American Pharoah is a horse, but so is Amy Schumer.
That link is not a link. "You didn't build it."
My old Moot Court pard used to say: "Life was for people who couldn't read. Time is for people who can't think."
Marine LePen
People often confuse "person of the year" with "person I like most this year". Hence their incredulity when Hitler wins.
This year Trump makes the most sense if you're focusing on politics. But I suppose a lot of people aren't focusing on politics, so who else is out there--entertainer, or scientist? No one really comes to mind.
" Hillary Clinton... came in 26th, tied with Jorge Ramos, Amy Schumer, and American Pharoah."
My dream election return of 2016.
Muslium Terrorsist.
What did Bernie do? Run a half-assed campaign?
No mention of whose policies might have led to the problem, or an examination of the pathologies of the culture these people are fleeing from.
Or that the kid in the picture wasn't a refugee but a kid whose dad wanted to get more money elsewhere and sentenced his child to death. If my boat was so unsafe my son drowned, I'd make sure I wasn't alive. If my son was going to drown, I'd kill myself trying to save him.
I grew up readingTIME magazine. I can remember all through my middle school and high school years eagerly awaiting its delivery, whish was usually with the Friday mail. I can't say that I've looked at one in at least the last 15 years, maybe 20 years. I didn't know anyone still read it. The results of the vote surely speaks to the demographic corner it which it has painted itself. I don't even understand whey the MOTY is even relevant anymore. The magazine surelly isn't; I neve see any links to it or any quotes from it. Does anyone significant even write for it?
Did you really think Time would do anything positive about Trump ?
Maybe not - but TIME didn't exactly gush over Adolf Hitler when they named him the 1938 Man of the Year.
The choice of Trump is just tooo obvious. And not *helpful* at all.
Hillary at 26th. That's good news.
And, I havn't read TIME in several decades. Lousy partisan rag, it is. May it circle the bowl like Newsweek.
"Women did surprisingly well, bizarrely well." Not bizarre at all, considering their customers. Makers of art in Manhattan, yoga instructors in San Fran, teachers in the Boston burbs. Nor surprising at all, considering the usual Prog narrative, occasionally pushed even on this blog, women have it so much harder, because kids and second shift and all that--it's a wonder any man could ever be man of the year again.
Time still has readers?
No surprise they want Bernie.
I second the vote for LePen.
Or maybe LePen jointly with the Jihadi Honeymooners.
I would have guessed the Jesuit Climatista from Argentina, who has everything going for him...anti-captitalism, anti-AGW, anti-western democracy, socialist, pro-income equality, all that stuff, generally pisses off the conservatives in town. A little weak on gay marriage, but hey, can't have it all I think.
2nd place to Bruce Jenner, show to the editorial board at the NY Times.
I see that I've been named Time's Person of the Year 3 times, in 1966, 1969, and 2006. It appears Althouse was named those times and also in 1975 and 2011 (if we count her counter-protest at the Wisconsin Capitol).
BERNIE SANDERS??? REALLY???? WHY???
Time is still in business? Who knew?
Time's last remaining reader should be its Person of the Year.
When I look at Time's list and try to predict Time's behavior, I think the choice will be: Refugees. (6th in the poll.)
Time's circulation is going down 10% quarter over quarter, so I hope you put some thought into this. You won't be doing it for much longer.
And who's on the cover of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper? Oh, that's defunct? And Time isn't, but, it's about equally relevant.

Tom Brady. He helped his team win the Super Bowl, battled the NFL over deflate gate, and has had an amazing season with properly inflated footballs that are now under heavy scrutiny.
Tom Brady is excellent at his job and has endured attacks by football fans who hate the Patriots (the majority of football fans) and knocked the NFL owners and their water boy, Roger Goodell, on his ass.
I'm betting on the black lesbian transsexual who bravely threw a rock at Laura Bush.
Bravo, mccullough!!!
We've had horses' asses as Time's person of the year. Why not a horse?
I would say Trump would sell the most magazines.
After the last decade (or two), why would anyone care who Time picks as their "Person of the Year?"
"Tom Brady." Yeah, forget Vlad, forget Angela. And hey, this might even work with their demographic.
I think I would do a baby picture except the baby would be grayed out indicating it was missing. Because the demographic crisis is driving most of the crises; it is essentially the reason why Merkel [and the EU] wants to accept migrants and why Obama has opened our borders and why Japan is stagnant and why Putin grabbed the Crimea and is trying for the Ukraine and its 40 million people. Demographic winter is not the cause of everything but those missing kids are causing a lot of trouble.
Actually I suspect we reached a global tipping point this year of some kind and that's why no one is really prominent. No one represents the new. It's like watching water freeze or snow melt or a storm come across the high plains. It's so slow the fast frame news cycle can't catch it; the actually moving picture looks like a background wall. I nominate the wind - shown by a newspaper blowing around
The Pope.
Ahmet the Clock Boy!
ISIS, or mor
Remember, it's supposed to be to whomever effected the news the most for good or ill.
This is how the Ayatollah Khomeini won it (1979 I think?).
