ADDED: Here in Madison, Wisconsin, in the UW campus area, the young women are out-and-proud with the leggings-as-pants look. Nobody seems to remember the old days when you at least felt that you needed some kind of tunic-length top. The full length of legging is exposed, exactly as if leggings were pants. There's no reticence, no sense that this is out there or daring or maybe it's okay if the leggings are really thick and there's some sort of stitched-on pocket-and-placket imagery. I am seeing full-on Leggings Are Pants true believers.

All the women's clothes are so casual now. I can't find a thing appropriate for work. It's all jeans, trashy logos and look-at-me!!! tops. Does no one have to work anymore?

About a hundred years, and nearly as many pounds, ago, I was a fair to middlin' runner. Many of the young, fit women I ran with in Hotlanta wore thin tights as their cooler weather clothing of choice.

I wear leggings as pants. But I buy them a size too large and in a slightly heavier knit than the usual legging--so they actually look like skinny pants--non clingy. Like Tom Ford, I can't stand the balloon-dog look that many women display--with their rear end (and often not the most attractive rear end)in full view, which is what you get with cheap, tight, shiny leggings. The very worst leggings of all are the ones in the psychedelic prints that women with the very worst figures seem to favor: florals, fake tie-dye, "Northern lights," etc. But if you buy your leggings big,in dark solid colors, and in a good brand (Athleta, J-Jill, Donna Karan, etc.), you can look very elegant.
I was hoping you would opine on the misuse of 'reticent' in the article.
But I am reluctant to say anything more.

You need a Leggings as Pants tag - it's not going away. As a red blooded American male, I'm not really complaining.
It's not the minds that are easy to read.
This was foretold, when oversized house slippers (Ugg boots) became widely worn in the streets. Standards have been punctured, and now nothing holds up.
Meanwhile, I'm fighting for a pants-free America. One day we shall reign triumphant!

The camel's toe is inside the tent.
What's odd is that increasingly revealing female clothing is coupled with increasing female obesity. The result is somewhat revolting.
With males, we have the opposite: increasingly baggy and more encompassing clothing coupled with increasing obesity. The men at least are making sense.
As a man, all I can say is "Thank God, I live in a universe where young women believe leggings are pants!"

Leggings as pants is sexually provocative. And young people don't have the maturity to dole out sexuality in moderation.

My daughter wears them -- at work even. I say "Leggings aren't pants" but what daughter her age listens to a parent?
She wears long sweaters, though, and (I think) an apron at work.
Leggings aren't considered pants in Thailand and you will need to cover them when entering certain of its temples.

Here in Dallas, especially in a wealthy enclave known as the Park Cities one often sees the mothers of young women (themselves frequently wearing expensive jeans) wearing leggings as pants. Reasons for this are no doubt manifold, all having to do with young women.
Especially poignant are those moments, not of obesity, but when exceptionally disciplined dieting has left the leggings not fully clinging to the 50-something's legs, as if she were her own pre-teen daughter trying on her mother's stockings.
I'm ok with coeds wearing yoga pants. Youth's a thing that will not last.. The pantsuit phase lasts forever.
I don't get it. They cannot handle unwanted comments on their appearance, yet wear attire seemingly designed to get them unwanted comments and attention.

Maybe we can gauge how bad rape culture is on campus by how much butt the women show off.
This has been going on here in Seattle for at least 5 years now. Probably longer. I thought it was happening nationwide. Then I had a friend visit from the East Coast and he saw all these women wearing leggings as pants and was blown away. Then I realized it was a Seattle thing.
I guess it's caught on.
Aren't leggings the same as pantyhose? And, aren't pantyhose just underwear? Forgive my cluelessness about the leggings trend, but what do these women wear under the underwear that is now outerwear? And, will the clothing under the underwear become outerwear at some later date?
The way I dress expresses my utter rejection of the world Tim Gunn inhabits. I care deeply about that.
Women must believe showing off their camel toes and every dimple and curve of a well sculpted ass aren't sexual at all. Who am I to argue?

In science fiction movies and comic illustrations of the 50s both men and women of the future wore leggings or leotards as pants. So it seems we are living in the future.
I live in Spain and leggings as pants is very popular, they like to wear them very tight, with heels. My husband is quite fascinated by the phenomena.
Prepare for more on campus, most of my female students (high school) wear black leggings every day of the week.
It's better than sweatpants, IMO.

See, as far as critiquing other fashions I'm sure that's true, but if you've watched the last few seasons of Project Runway and paid attention to his tie knots and shirt-coat pattern selection....well, I have my doubts now is all I'm sayin'.

This is common where I WORK!!!! I understand the tights with sweater dress, or leggings with a long tunic, but none of that is occurring. Small sweater, butt out in leggings.

There was a video making the rounds online about a year ago where a woman painted the lower half of her body and walked around naked below the waist in a bustling New York city for many hours. No one could tell. When your fashion choice is indistinguishable from nudity, it might be time to rethink it.
For my 12 year old daughter, leggings as pants is her everyday look. Her private school prohibited leggings without a mid-thigh length shirt until this year. Female students complained that the no leggings and no yoga pants rules were sexist as boys do not wear these things. Leggings as pants actually works OK when you are 5'4" and about 90 pounds.
