Sitting in a booth in a diner, Ben Carson explains his campaign's new urban radio ad to Jorge Ramos.

You hear only the beginning of the ad in that video — as Ramos, after asking Carson about the ad, starts playing it on a mobile phone. You can play the whole ad here. And here's the discussion at Metafilter. Excerpt:
I was hoping for more of the "I'm Ben Carson and I'm here to say..." style rap popular among conservatives and corporate team-building consultants everywhere.

"...store your grain the Egyptian way."

I haven't listened to the ad yet because I am at work, but "...store your grain the Egyptian way" meant to me that you save your surplus for a time of famine. Don't spend away your future. No, he has some goofy idea that the Egyptian pyramids were built for storing grain, and that "scientists" say aliens helped build the pyramids but you don't need aliens' help when you have God.

There are only two reasons I like Carson. The grain storage idea is one, the other when he responded to Trump's rant about vaccines and said Trump would be an OK doctor. Both show that Carson is not going to just accept the conventional wisdom on a subject. But what he thinks about the pyramids built before and after Joseph's time I can't imagine.

I'm not sure how community organizing, or neurosurgery are relevant to being President.

Neurosurgery is relevant because being a neurosurgeon involves sustained learning over a long period of time as well as making literally life-or-death decisions in very short periods of time.

Community organizing is relevant because being a community organizer involves creating an angry ignorant mob and using it to enrich and aggrandize yourself.

They're not both relevant to the same kind of President, obviously.

He merely referenced their existence.

I have no particular interest in Darwin as he had nothing to say to technology or finance. Whatever Carson thinks of Darwin, does not seem to have stop him from successfully practicing medicine.

I certainly hope whatever bushwah about West Point is quickly sorted.

narciso বলেছেন...

HoodlumDoodlum বলেছেন...

Yes Garage, racist. Ugly.

Georgianna,

None of the service academies charge tuition in the way most colleges do; most likely Carson's recollection was that Westmoreland or someone else told him he could have a tuition-free ride at West Point if he applied (he had good grades, was the highest-ranking cadet in his JROTC, etc) and in retelling this he referred to that "deal" as a "full scholarship." That, of course, is giving him a very basic benefit of the doubt and treating in good faith him like an actual human being with a normal, imperfect, memory.

You and Garage are going with the theory that Yale graduate Dr. Ben Carson (head of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins for almost 3 decades) is an idiotic crackpot liar. Obviously you have the Media with you, but the truth...oh well, what does that matter?

Fernandinande বলেছেন...

More lying and nutjobbery from that page:
"On August 7, 2002, Carson underwent surgery for prostate cancer,[37] and in an interview in November of that year, he stated that the surgery had successfully removed all cancerous tissue and that he was completely cured of the disease.[38] However, in a 2004 speech at a Mannatech event, Carson credited the company's products for the disappearance of his prostate cancer symptoms.[33][34] Carson's relationship with Mannatech continued after the company paid $7 million in 2009 to settle a deceptive-marketing lawsuit in Texas over claims that its products could cure autism and cancer.[39][40][33] Carson's most recent paid speech for Mannatech was in 2013, for which he was paid $42,000; his image appeared on the corporation's website as recently as 2014,[33] and in the same year he praised their “glyconutrient” supplements in a PBS special that was subsequently featured on the site.[41]"
++

"As a surgeon, I find Ben Carson particularly troubling. By pretty most[sic] reports, he was a skilled neurosurgeon who practiced for three decades, rising to the chief of neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. Yet, when he ventures out of the field of neurosurgery—even out of his own medical specialty—he routinely lays down some of the dumbest howlers I’ve ever heard. For example, he denies evolution, but, even worse, he’s been a shill for a dubious supplement company, Mannatech. Worse still, when called out for his relationship with Mannatech in the last Republican debate, Carson lied through his teeth about it. The pseudoscientific views he relates have been so bad that he led me to resurrect some old schtick that I had abandoned years ago about physicians denying evolution leading me to put a paper bag over my head in shame for my profession."

HoodlumDoodlum বলেছেন...

By the way, Carson's not my guy and I'm not all that interested in defending every belief he might choose to articulate. Plenty of people, Left and Right, believe things I find silly. Weirdly enough the Media only demands that SOME of those people defend their silly beliefs...and the SOME has a distinct ideological bias, as I'm sure everyone can see. If Dr. Carson was on the Left I'm sure he could just say "Black Liberation Theology" and wave his hands--problem solved. Since he's not on the Left that's not an option so he has to deal with much more scrutiny, and it's fair to judge him (as a candidate) on how he deals with that.

Stating or implying that he's generally stupid, though, is patently ridiculous given the man's life, work, and personal achievements.

STATISTICS... they lie.

BN বলেছেন...

Actually, I will say that the Anthropogenic Global Warming thesis deserves full fledged (can't think of the proper scientific-sounding word) analysis. I first became aware of it in the late 1970s, when it was known as the "Greenhouse Effect." So I've been paying attention a long time.

But I can't get over the fact that since the advent of fossil fuels technology and use of "cheap energy" (i.e., the industrial revolution) took off, the lot of the common man (and woman) has vastly--VASTLY--improved. I'm concerned that messing with that is asking for a return to life as lived when it was "poor, nasty, brutish and short." Raising costs of energy is only going to hurt the poor. And furthermore, third worlders have a legitimate gripe to say that, "hey, now that you richies have yours and have burned that shit at will for a couple hunnerd years, now you want to shut down the spigot and leave us hangin'." They have a point.

Meanwhile, the "science"... well, it's fishy, in'it? It's not like global climate hasn't changed on it's own throughout planetary history without anthropogenic "guidance."

But even so, I think if bad things does happen, mitigation is the route to take. And it'll put people to work building damns and whatever, real "public projects" as they say (well, robots probably, but I have hopes for the third world that actual humans will still have jobs). So...

Hell, whatever. All this might be the least of our worries anyway.

Warm is better than cold, I always say.
