Donald Trump questions the single belt buckle theory and the pyramid theory.

On "Meet the Press" this morning, Donald Trump was asked about Ben Carson:
Well, I feel badly for Ben. I've gotten to like Ben. And it's a tough thing. I mean, he writes a book where he went after his mother, hit her on the head, or wanted to hit her on the head with a hammer. Hitting a friend in the face with a lock, with a padlock, hard in the face, stabbing somebody, only to be broken up by a belt buckle. Which, if you know about belt buckles, they turn and they twist. I don't think they're going to stop a knife with the force of a strong man. And when he writes that he has pathological disease in a book, now he obviously wrote this book prior to thinking about running for office, I assume. But he said he has pathological disease.... Well, if you have pathological disease, that's a problem. I mean, he wrote it. I didn't write it. But he's going to have to explain a lot of things away. The scholarship situation, the dinner with Westmoreland when Westmoreland wasn't there. And the pyramids. You know, a pyramid is a solid structure, essentially. Other than a little area for the pharaoh. And you don't put grain in a pyramid because it's all solid.
He used the same material on "Face the Nation":
When you are talking about hitting your mother over the head with a hammer -- and I'm sure you never said that. And I never said that or thought that. And hitting a friend in the face with a lock, with a padlock, and stabbing somebody, and, you know, lots of -- and saying you have psycho -- when you have pathological disease, which he said. And now the whole thing comes out about West Point, where he was talking about scholarships at West Point. And, you know, I have been -- I know a lot about West Point. West Point doesn't do the scholarship thing. So, a lot of -- a lot of questions are being raised. And the pyramid situation is a little bit different, because, frankly, if you know anything about the pyramids, you know they are pretty solid structures. They don't have -- they didn't have steel, where they would span it and they would create a big vacuum underneath. Those are solid structures. So, you're talking about storing grain in the pyramids. Well, they have very little space. They have space for small rooms, where the pharaohs had their coffins and where the pharaohs were buried, essentially. So, a lot of -- a lot of things are going on. And I don't know. I just don't know what to think. I hope it -- I hope it works out fine for Ben. I just don't know what to think....
Pressed by the moderator to admit this material is "quite secondary":
Well, I think when you say that you stabbed someone, and was saved by a belt buckle -- and that's pretty unlikely, because a belt buckle will turn. You know, a belt buckle is not going to stop a knife. The belt buckle itself will turn. And when you say you hit your mother over the head with a hammer, or tried to, those are pretty -- and when you write in book that you have pathological disease, pathological disease is not cured. And, you know, you had dinner with Westmoreland -- now, I hear Westmoreland may not have been in the area where the dinner took place at that time, according to his schedule. So, I don't know about that. And maybe it's right and maybe it's wrong, but those are pretty tough charges. And they were written by him himself. The pathological stuff was written. That's very serious, pathological disease.

The grain is in a secret chamber in middle-earth. They just haven't found the elevator shaft inside the pyramids yet.

When they do, it's all over for midwest grain farmers. Because there's going to be a shit-load of grain coming out of middle-earth, I'm-a telling you fer sure...

I wonder if there are rats in middle-earth.

Jeb: Low Energy.

When the time comes if he hangs the "Corrupt" tag on Hillary we'll know he means business.

Westmoreland was not at an event on or near Memorial Day, but Carson would have had a chance to meet him the previous February.

Carson is not attributing the West Point offer to Westmoreland - and he didn't really do that in the book. The next sentence after the meeting with Westmoreland is that "later" he "was offered" (passive voice) the scholarship.

(I speculated that Carson was correcting a ghostwriter, but he didn't correct him enough. Or was it somebody else who canged it?)

Trump is maybe not up to speed on all this.

Also, worthy of note: Vietnam is spelled as two words in that book: Viet Nam. That's really old fashioned and may very well have come from Carson himself. (or was that his evangelical publisher's style?)

Trump is enlisting the leftist media in his attacks to bring Ben Carson down. Three weeks ago he told George Snuffleupagus, (a contributor to the Clinton Crime Family and former Sesame Street character) that he would have to go after Carson:

"Probably. At some point, yes, which I actually look forward to doing," Trump said, adding that at the moment, "I can't do it. He's been so nice to me."

Personal attacks are not unexpected from narcissists.

So Trump never fabricates and Carson is the only candidate with "crazy supporters"?

Whatever T-rump does or says is always correct according to his crazy crowd because he can determine whatever passes through his brain on its way to his mouth at warp speed to be precisely the one and only correct answer to the world's most complex problems.

The Bible says the grain was stored in each city. (Genesis 41:48) Rabbi Hertz, in his Chumash (1936) says in his comentary to 41:45, that Egyptologists say Joseph's new name, Zaphenath Paneah, means "Food Man of the Life"

His commentary to Genesis 47:19 says:

both we and our land 'The old feudal nobility of Egypt disappeared during the Hyksos period, and from the time of the eighteenth Dynasty onward, we find the land, which had formerly been held by local proprietors, belonging either to the Pharoah or to the temples. At the same time public granaries make their appearance, he superintendent of which became one of the most important of Egyptian officials' (Sayce)

That sounds like archeologists had already found possible grain storage sites, or at least records of them. They weren't the pyramids!

Nor did the children of Israel build pyramids (another misconception) but storage cities for Pharoah - called Pithom and Ramesis. (Exodus 1:11)

The Pharaoh Ramesis II, whose mummy is now in Paris, (Wikipedia says Cairo but I remember reading how he was being treated for an infection or something in Paris) named everything after himself, including things previous rulers had built.

They didn't always use pyramids. By the time Joseph came around, they had probably stopped building pyramids. They are only thought to have been used from about 2700 BC until about 1700 BC. After that, they used tombs. Although some were built much later in the Sudan, even as late as 300 CE. There are only about 135 pyramids in Egypt.

Sometime after the High Priest of Amun Pinudjem II died (it is said, in 969 BC) the remains of about 50 Egyptian kings were moved to his tomb to protect them from grave robbers. The mummies of the Pharoahs kept on being moved and moved to protect them.

"Carson is not attributing the West Point offer to Westmoreland - and he didn't really do that in the book. The next sentence after the meeting with Westmoreland is that "later" he "was offered" (passive voice) the scholarship."

The issue with the west point scholarship is really dubious journalism. Politico misattributed to Carson what he actually said. Now, its true that West point doesn't in fact offer scholarships. But they would pay for his education. He says they offered him a paid for education at west point. Which he turned down. Nowhere did he say he received a scholarship. But if you are being offered to have your education paid for fully its' the equivalent of a scholarship.
So lets not fault Carson for saying he was offered what amounts to a scholarship if in fact he was. And there was no evidence that he wasn't.
Politico had to actually walk back their headline.

I'll also note that the media is doing an awful lot of vetting on claims made in his book. Did they perform such due diligence when discussing Obama's books? He clained that his mom was denied claims by her medical insurance. He used composite charaters. He even said that the scenes in the book may contain composites.
The media allowed his book to contain poetic licenses almost without question. And don't get me started on white washing his involvement with Rev Wright. CNN had a no Wright policy where they refused to cover his book.
So, sure, lets vet the guy. Where was the vetting when it was the other guy? And if youre going to vet the guy don't put words in his mouth.

" Which, if you know about belt buckles, they turn and they twist. I don't think they're going to stop a knife with the force of a strong man."

I know a little about belt buckles since I wear a belt. And I know that the buckle itself does not really turn. The belt might twist. But the buckle itself is solid. So if you swung a belt buckle at someone, so long as the solid end of the buckle hit the person holding the knife you might actually do some damage.
Further, as belts are longer than your waste you could swing it and the person with the knife would be at a disadvantage until they closed the gap.

Sammy Finkelman said...

Carson said they didn't do this to "one President Barack Obama" Carson cited Bill Ayers, claiming that people didn't want to say they knew each other.

It is certainly true there was all kinds of false stuff in Barack Obama;s autobiography. Obama, however, had said that some of the people were compsoites, and that let him get away with it.

There's actually one bit of fact checking that Carson could haqve cited that nobody has made too much of but probably Carson himself is not aware of it:

https://books.google.com/books?id=GrCMAgAAQBAJ&pg=PT458&dq=obama+ebony+color+tribune&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CBoQ6AEwAGoVChMI3bH6jseByQIVx1g-Ch0AUw_Q#v=onepage&q=obama%20ebony%20color%20tribune&f=false

OR see:

http://theobamafile.com/obamarace.htm

Also in his memoir, Obama writes of one of the watershed moments of his racial awareness -- time and again in remarkable detail. It is a story about a Life magazine article that influenced him. The report was about a black man who tried to bleach his skin white. When Obama was told no such article could be found in Life, he says "it might have been Ebony.

He is 9 years old, living in Indonesia, where he and his mother moved with her new husband, Lolo Soetoro, a few years earlier. One day while visiting his mother, who was working at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta, Obama passed time by looking through several issues of Life magazine. He came across an article that he later would describe as feeling like an "ambush attack."

The article included photos of a black man who had destroyed his skin with powerful chemical lighteners that promised to make him white. Instead, the chemicals had peeled off much of his skin, leaving him sad and scarred, Obama recalled.

"I imagine other black children, then and now, undergoing similar moments of revelation," Obama wrote of the magazine photos in "Dreams."

Yet no such photo exists, according to historians at the magazine. No such photos, no such article. When asked about the discrepancy, Obama said in a recent interview, "It might have been an Ebony or it might have been ... who knows what it was?" (At the request of the Tribune, archivists at Ebony searched their catalogue of past articles, none of which matched what Obama recalled.)

In fact, it is surprising, based on interviews with more than two dozen people who knew Obama during his nearly four years in Indonesia, that it would take a photograph in a magazine to make him conscious of the fact that some people might treat him differently in part because of the color of his skin.

William said...

I wouldn't trust a Presidential candidate who didn't on occasion want to attack his mother with a hammer. Who among us hasn't had those feelings. The fact that Ben Carson successfully resisted these impulses is an endorsement of his character. I would much rather have Ben Carson as president than Lizzie Borden........On a somewhat more esoteric level, I note that when Carson achieved fame and success , he didn't ditch his wife for a supermodel. To some extent that makes me question his judgment. What good is a wall of triumph, if you don't have a supermodel by your side to help you enjoy it.

That is fair. Only I also don't like being played by the media when they distort the story to begin with and the person ends up trying to knock down a straw man.

jr565 said...

And actually this is what Carson says about the belt buckle:

I had real anger issues. I would just fly off the handle and really become quite irrational and try to hurt people with baseball bats, hammers, whatever. In this particular case, I happened to have a large camping knife. And, you know, one of my friends angered me. And I just lunged at his abdomen with the knife. Probably would have seriously injured or killed him, but he happened to have on a large metal belt buckle under his clothing, upon which the blade broke.

So it wasn't an instance of fighting with a belt buck it was an instance of a knife hitting a buckle and breaking. That is totally reasonable. What is this, the belt turns garbage Trump is spewing. If you stab at someone and instead hit a solid metal object it may in fact deflect a blade and even break it.

So, a second story about carson that seems to be stretching for conflict.

Sammy Finkelman said...

You know, somebody could have looked throrugh issues of the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature from about 1965 till about 1973 to see if there was any kind of an article published in any kind of major magazine of general interest about a man who bleached his skin white and damaged his skin doing so.

They surely weren't all gone from all libraries by 2008.

By the way, World War I was called the European War (War, European) in the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature all the way up to 1976!

Sammy Finkelman said...

And Carson might not have thrust that camping knife at the other boy with all that much force. so the statement that might be wrong would be:

"Probably would have seriously injured or killed him."

Maybe not so.

THen theres one I cant find a link on, where someone said carson was the smartest guy in the class. And some journalist thought he had a gotcha and said there wasn't a class with the exact name. And the Carson team countered, maybe he misremembered the name of the class.
High crimes and misdemeanors!!!!

I don't plan on voting for the guy, but its certainly a fact that they are scrutinizing him in ways they don't for most others. When Meghyn Kelly asked about Donald Trump calling women bitches he had a whole twitter war with her and said he wouldn't go on Fox news. Those statements are easily verifiable, and further were made when Trump was in the public eye. He didn't want to deal with addressing those issues.
But Carson should have address the name of the class he was in 30 years ago?

"Mr carson, in your book you said you had worn blue sneakers when you were 12 years old. We looked into it and NIKE DIDN"T HAVE BLUE SNEAKERS THAT YEAR. Explain yourself!"

Too much of it seems to be that level of gotcha vetting.

William said...

The whole argument was probably over the toy from a Happy Meal at McDonald's. The knife in question was a plastic knife which explains it's breaking. The story was somewhat embellished in that it happened when Carson was five years old.

The other scandal apparently is the he has a weird view about what pyramids were used for. He thinks they were used to store grain. Despite leading archaeologists thinking that they were tombs.
And this is a scandal why? Because he disagrees with archaelogists over a trivial matter that has nothing to do with anything? Lefties think that biology doesn't determine sex, but that you can assert your sex simply by thinking it so. And if you diverge from that opinion you hate transgendered people. That is far more extreme a thought based on magical thinking than assuming that a pyramid wasn't used for what archaeologists thought.
Why would I care if he got that answer wrong?

These are not real scandals.

The pyramids weren't really granaries. Trump is correct about that.

I guess Dr. Carson never saw the DeMille movie "The Ten Commandments," which depicted the Egyptian granaries more accurately:

http://tinyurl.com/qx7ch4n

But it's not Dr. Carson's fault. He doesn't know any better.

Medieval Christians had wrongly interpreted the pyramids as the granaries in which grain had been stored after Joseph had prophesied a famine.

And that Christian myth has hung around ever since, despite it being factually false.

Speaking Sunday on ABC's "This Week," Carson admitted that the course name that appeared in his book was inaccurate, but said his campaign had found the student newspaper article and would release it.

"I wonder why, with all their investigating abilities, they can’t find it. We found it and we’re going to be putting it out," he said. "The course, I guess was called Psychology 1-0. know, when you write a book with a co-writer and you say that there was a class, a lot of time they’ll put a number or something just to give it more meat. You know, obviously, decades later, I’m not going to remember the course number."

Later on Sunday, Carson shared a syllabus for a 2002 psychology class called "Perception" on his Facebook page, writing "Allow me also to do the research for the Wall Street Journal reporter. Here is a syllabus for the class you claim never existed. Still waiting on the apology."

The great pyramid at Giza has a large gallery runnng for maybe a hundred feet or so. Angled up at @ 15 deg it was thought that it was used as an observatory while the structure was being built.
It may also have been used in building.

Yeah, fuckers, keep at it. Ok, he's not an archaeologist like all of you, he just read about it in his Bible, not on Wikipedia where the truth lies.

Now point to your fucking trigeminal nerve.

Now fix it.

If this is the limit of the substance that can be arrayed against Dr. Carson, he must be the perfect man.

I'm surprised to learn that @traditionalguy is an expert on the what makes a good surgeon.

He's not all that wrong. Surgery is a skill that's not all that related to other medical knowledge. Fred Demara, "The Great Imposter" was able to perform skilled surgery (learned by consulting books and talking to people) during the Korean War aboard a Canadian naval ship.

Demara disappeared to his room with a textbook on general surgery and proceeded to speed-read the various surgeries he was now forced to perform, including major chest surgery. None of the casualties died as a result of Demara's surgeries.

Of course, Ben Carson also had to graduate medical school.

Different versions of the stabbing story have appeared over the years (not counting the one in the movie)

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/10/27/carson-stabbing-story-full-of-holes.html (published Tuesday 10.27.15 8:30 PM ET)

In three (the 1990 book, "Think Big: Unleashing Your Potential for Excellence" and the 1996 book "Gifted Hands" and the 2007 book Take the Risk ) it was because Bob changed a radio station; in the 2000 book "The Big Picture" and the 2011 book "America the Beautiful," no cause is given; but in the 2014 book, "One Nation", a classmate came along and began to ridicule him.

In both of the two earlieest books it is a camping knife, (the movie based on Gifted Hands has him whittling, but that's clearly an alteration) in 2000, he doesn't say anything about the knife, in 2007 he describes it as pocketknife (in Gifted Hands he said he carried a camping knife in his back pocket) in 2011, it's just a knife, and in 2014 it is "large camping knife."
