Humorous. But I do think that he will get his gun back. Found that last comment interesting - LA Times commenting on CO Springs. City is pretty conservative and gun friendly. Still can't go around shooting guns - just too dangerous. Next time there, they will just drive to the city limits first.

He could have just got Umbuntu Linux and ditched Microsoft's os.

Umbuntu is free and very reliable.

Stop making Bill Gates rich.

Agreed, but its spelled Ubuntu.

I have been using it for close to 10 years now...posting this on a laptop running it.

Unlike the linux of geekdom past, it is very user friendly.

Blue screens? Why the hell didn't he reinstall Windows? Or have it reinstalled? To me, that's trivial to do, and on any Dell within the last decade, it'll have come with a recovery disk that makes the procedure easy.

If the blue screens continued on a fresh install, then that'd indicate hardware problems and he'd know he'd have to either ID and fix those, or just replace.

Sheesh... people treat boxes like they're magic voodoo inside instead of applying rationality to their malfunctions. Half my own job isn't actually dealing with IT matters themselves, it's dealing with people's reactions, too often irrational. Computers are easy to fix; it's people who add the difficulty.

Ubuntu is crocheted shorts. Passable in an emergency, but an ugly jumble pie of odd peculiarities.

There's a reason Microsoft spends millions of dollars in user research.

Sometimes inanimate objects need to die. You assign them a human personality just so,you can then imagine that destroying them means something to them.

It certainly seemed that way to me early on in it's development and my learning curve.

I'm guessing you haven't tried one of the more current releases. Depending on what you need to do, it's faster and totes more stable than the microsoft offerings. Plus the apps are free.

Full disclosure, I still keep a XP box around for my AutoCad, and my bride has an emotional attachment to Windows Media player so I had to buy her a laptop with Windows 8...yuck.

Sometimes it isn't as simple as that. When I started a new job in 2012, I was issued a Dell laptop similar to the one in the photo. There were some issues with it and I had a lot of blue screens. It took our IT guys (and they're very good at what they do) several weeks to fix the problem.

Sometimes, that isn't an option. In my case, I use some specialized software to do my job that isn't available on other operating systems. Other times, you have to maintain file compatibility with your customers who are using Microsoft products.

True.

"Other times, you have to maintain file compatibility with your customers who are using Microsoft products."

Maybe. The Office suite that is bundled with it can export/import formats compatible with Microsoft/Apple products.

I really don't have a dog in the hunt. Everybody has their own set of criteria and needs. For me it works well for 95% of everything I need a confuser for..the XP box handles the remaining 5%.

"Mint" is similar (same base), but better. And more popular. That said I mostly use Debian, which is the base for Ubuntu and Mint, but more of a "build it yourself" distro.

You can run just about anything - MS Office, Photoshop - under Linux with virtualbox while having a more reliable, virus-free system.

I'll give mint a try..not ambitious enough to with straight Debian.

My father in law was arrested after putting a bullet through the TV 'due to inaccurate weather predictions". He just got fed up.

He is a geinial fellow now but apparantly was a lot of fun before he quit drinking.

Had my wife informed me it was a "family secret", I would not have expressed my admiration for the act during Thanksgiving dinner with all members of both families

I think those of us who prefer chocolate over vanilla iced cream should be enough to make up for that. It's reparations for the jelly bean thing.

Or is the jelly bean thing the fact that people prefer colored jelly beans over plain white ones?

The XPS 410 in the photo is a desktop machine, not a laptop. Furthermore: The weeks delay could be for a variety of factors such as waiting for a piece of replacement hardware; it doesn't necessarily follow that a two week wait was a two week troubleshooting period. In my experience, the most likely reason for a long troubleshooting time is a restriction against erasing and reinstalling the operating system. Normally, a clean OS slate helps eliminate a LOT of things as causes.

I do admit that it can be a much more involved problem than simply reinstalling Windows, but in regards to bluescreens, I'm applying over a decade's worth of IT experience to cutting through BS and forcing the troubleshooting to either reveal a hardware problem or something not hardware. If problems persist after a Windows install, RAM, CPU, motherboard, etc. are suddenly suspect and Windows is not. If a format and reinstall is not possible for reasons like files being lost, well... they certainly stand a next to 100% chance of being lost if a bullet goes through the hard drive! Either way, the fact that not all problems are solvable through formatting and reinstalling an OS is not a defense for capping a computer.

Temporary insanity is. And trust me, I've wanted to shoot many a computer in my day. With something far stronger than a handgun! :D

I was going to say his behavior was unreasonable til I found out it was a Dell. Their QC and customer service suck standing pondwater. Read of Glenn Reynolds' adventures with them a couple years back.

I thought that the correct way to obliviate a misbehaving piece of office equipment was best demonstrated in the movie Office Space. Old school, with a baseball bat beatdown.

And I have never seen "What caliber for PC?" as a topic on any gun blog, although I am sure 9mm will be derided as insufficient compared with .40, .45ACP, 10mm, and .357 or .44 Magnum for the revolver lovers.
