"Syrian people (have been) suffering for three years and a half. It's enough.... So I would like to get the story of what ISIS wants to do."

Said Kenji Goto, 47, last fall, leaving his 2 daughters and wife in Japan, to report from Syria.

What ISIS wanted to do and did was behead him — on camera, with a message to Japan (Abe =  Prime Minister Shinzo Abe):
"Abe, because of your reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war, this knife will not only slaughter Kenji, but will also carry on and cause carnage wherever your people are found... So let the nightmare for Japan begin."

Mission accomplished.

The future should not belong to those who avenge the Prophet Muhamad.

By Jove. He's got it. Mass murder and only mass murder pleases allah, not that Peaceful Islam has anything at all to do with it.

Unlike the United States, Britain and other allies, Japan is not involved in the military campaign against ISIS. But Japan has been providing humanitarian aid in the Middle East as ISIS continues its bloody quest to solidify an Islamic state across parts of Iraq and Syria.

So he was just a hostage for ransom.

It's too bad more of our American do-gooders don't head over there to show solidarity with Mr. Goto.

I can think of a few candidates. The same people who acted as "human shields" for Saddam are probably not interested this time, though.

Michael Yon is suggesting that Japan supply Toyota pickups with run flat tires to the Kurds in abundance.

What ISIS wants to do is chop off peoples heads, sell women into slavery, and take over territory. And kill people brutally, if I didn't mention that already.

LEts get some Chris Kyle's over there and start trying to beat his record.

The MB again threatened war with America. As Vodkapundit pointed out when he first blogged about it, AQ did the same, no one paid attention and have you visited The Towers lately?

When will we learn?

And the State Dept recently hosted them.

As a way to win the hears and minds of the undecided, I don't see how such tactics could possibly work. On the other hand, they keep attracting recruits and gaining control of more territory.....The ways to power are neither logical nor moral. Stalin was the big winner-- at least in terms of power and territory--in WWII, and he was extremely repulsive and stupid.

A clash of idealists, one with a camera and a notebook, and many others with guns and knives. The pen is not always mightier than the sword.

My hunch is they would have preferred the millions but if you can't get them then go for the sensation PR/recruiting video.

Calling it evil seems to undersell the reality.

Well Kenji Goto now knows what ISIS wants to do, first hand (or first head.)

Amazing how stupid people are. It's not like ISIS has not told the world what they 'want' and what they are going to do.

Kind of like the Jews who thought Hitler could be 'reasonable'. Surely they could appease him!

And yet, these little toadstools will be toast, in the long run.

"Let the nightmare...begin." You wish. You are just the latest in a long line who think you can do a little rough stuff and get your way. Ask the Nazis about that. Ask the Soviets. You'll cause trouble for awhile, and make some individual people's lives hell, but you are inconsequential nothings. Running around in the desert and grabbing a wayward traveler here and there is not the kind of thing on which a civilization is built. Once your bombastic little movement peters out in exhaustion you'll look back and think "What happened?" Of course, you won't do the looking, because you'll be long dead with nothing to show for it. Your moron compatriots will then probably take another crack at Nasserism, but that's a problem for another day.

Curious to see what Japan's next move is (if any). I'm not sure what Japan's next move should be (if any).

I'm disturbed by the suggestion of some commenters that his death is not a tragedy, even a source of humour. We need journalists willing to go to dangerous places and report back what is happening. It's inevitable that some will die, but we should be saddened when it happens and outraged when it's murder.

Tim,

Well their next moves OUGHT to be, reinstitute the Imperial Fleet, go nuclear, and rebuild their army (yes, Chuck the ' self defense' forces and make a REAL military.

That would scare both ISIS and China.

But we know that will never happen.
