I think the 'raising the morale of federal workers' is so silly--and I'm married to a federal worker. Really. If you have an ironclad job with good pay and benefits that you can put minimal effort into until you make it to that pension, and still have an issue with morale, it's your fault.
The part that isn't mentioned? Impacts on contractors and their staff.
Feds close down and get a paid holiday. Chinese are footing the bill.
Now my staff, who would work onsite at a Fed agency can't work. They need to take vacation or Leave Without pay because our contracts say no work, no invoice.
alternately, I give my staff a paid holiday and eat half a percent off my annual bottom line. That amounts to 5-10% of my annual profit. Yes, 1 day out of 200.
What the hell! Doesn't Obama know that a government shutdown is an awful thing? Make those folks take a vacation day like the rest of the country if they want the day off.
It's not like any work was going to get done, other than eating christmas cookies, extended "fun" PT sessions, morale bowling parties, office pot lucks, and the like.
At least that's what we did on every post I've been on when the 26th landed on a friday.
Not good enough. Government workers expect dot com or Detroit-level compensation and benefits. Perhaps Obama can pass another whatever-care program to extract capital from the private sector, or spend another trillion dollars to devalue both capital and labor. Actually, he could just continue rationalization and normalization of abortion to mitigate the consequences of his liberal policies through multiplier reductions.
This is one of the areas where I disagreed with President Bush and do as well with Obama.
I'm one of the federal workers who will benefit from this. Take it from me, we don't need it.
The problem comes from precident. Bush did this (Did Clinton? I don't know.)
Once you open Pandoras box, there is no closing it.
This is also why Obamas action on illegal immigrants needs to be stopped. Because the next President is just going to push this farther if he isn't.
Unless you're a raging libertarian. In which case, the idea behind the Obama Non-Enforcement Policy may actually be a great thing. Stop enforcing taxation. Drug laws. Hell, use your imagination. The uses, and abuses, are endless.
$232 a month premium jump for me. I know that's off topic, but putting eustice, bgates and me all in the same thread may just help a lurker or two who is not yet feeling the negative effects of Obamacare see its effects on real people and who is actually paying for all those mandated benefits.

I got coal in my stocking today.
My insurance premium is going up $119 a month.
Thanks president Obutthole.
Of course it's a new paid holiday.
WTF - they wouldn't do anything anyway
He's shutting down the Government? Oh, the humanity!

Thanks O
As if even 10% of guvmint workers would show up that day.
This would be a gift if they were going to show up in the first place.
How nice of China to have loaned him the money to pay them.

They were all taking vacation. e..g. they were paying for the time off. Now the Feds pay for it.

That's not Obama's constituency.

n.n.
Not all of us. Trust me when I say I know we are overpaid and underworked. Makes me sick.
My insurance premium is going up $119 a month.
At the moment I'm in the thrall of the evil capitalist insurance companies, and i'm paying $126 a month.
Starting in January I'll benefit from the tender care of the Democrat Party, and that will drop to $309.
This will be followed in most Blue States and in Cities of over 100K population.
But, as others have noted, wouldn't be any work done anyhow. Trust me on that - I've been there.
