Mary Burke supporters worry about how she'll do in the debates with Scott Walker.

A discussion at the very intra-Madison, intra-lefty forum at Isthmus. One commenter breaks up the good feeling within the group:
I'm just hoping Burke does better at the debates then she does when asked unscripted questions. It's all very fun to make fun of Walker and act like he's an idiot, but he's been a professional politician for about 20 years now. He knows how to publicly debate political issues. I'm not sure Burke has that skill yet and her inability to answer the plagiarism question was not very reassuring.
That last bit refers to this. Another commenter, local politico Stu Levitan, draws a warm bath for the group:
I thought Mary did really well on For The Record last weekend. I think she'll do fine in the debates.
For The Record! "For the Record" is a local Madison show that reflects local Madison values, where Mary Burke sat down for comfortable chat with 2 friendly reporters. Here, you can watch the show.

"For the Record" has invited Scott Walker to do the show too. It's not surprising he's declined.

MEANWHILE: Michelle Obama was back in Wisconsin, campaigning with Mary Burke, this time in Madison.

They should be worried. However, debates are more scripted than the unscripted questions where she appeared clueless. Even Biden survived the VP debate.

I find it amusing that the echo chamber thinks of Walker as an idiot.

Only slightly related: did you see the piece that Drudge linked to, that the Mexican consulate is helping its citizens get passports as Voter ID documentation? http://badgerherald.com/news/2014/10/02/mexican-consulate-comes-to-wisconsin-ensures-the-hispanic-vote-matters/#.VDVGD5JeYjw

I'm a bit mystified by this. If you're a naturalized citizen, shouldn't your naturalization papers suffice?

He is not an idiot. He is a very polished liar and a great campaigner.

She should bring props.

A fish and a bicycle, perhaps?

Nope, no surprise at all. His handlers are VERY careful about who the Governor is allowed to speak to, what groups he appears with, and he is never allowed to speak off the cuff or unscripted.

When was the last time the Governor had a press conference with open questions being accepted?

Beta Rube said...

Walker's handlers are careful? The Burke idiots banned a reporter they considered unfriendly from the Michelle re-do yesterday.

It's not in the local media of course, but it's gone national again.

kcom said...

So the question is, for the debate, will she be sitting down with two friendly reporters or what? What's the format and who is going to be asking the questions? Will Wisconsin have its version of Candy Crowley openly supporting one candidate during the debate with false talking points?

David said...

She and Michelle are campaigning in Madison? Turnout trumps persuasion.

David said...

Actually she should be looking forward to the debate. Low expectations exceeded can be very rewarding.

I find it amusing that the echo chamber thinks of Walker as an idiot.

My experience is that people who dismiss those who don't agree with them as "idiots" are the least likely to have arrived at their political philosophy via careful study and reasoning.

Their "beliefs" are shibboleths used to differentiate between their tribe and everyone else.

I suspect that should it become fashionable they would quickly abandon their current stances and adopt the opposite.

In regards to the debate, to the true believer her actual performance will be irrelevant. She will state what her followers want to hear and Walker will state things they disagree with.

Since what they agree with is intelligent and what they disagree with is dumb then Walker will have lost the debate. It's axiomatic.

Burke is an idiot for having reporters banned from her events and Walker is an idiot for having reporters arrested at the Capitol.

It is idiots all the way down

A GOP political operation funded by Walker campaign chair is not allowed in campaign event with First Lady of the United States????

I find it interesting that you think anybody in that forum called Walker an "idiot".

I also find it interesting that anyone commentating here would make fun of another forum for being an "echo chamber".

This would be some of the battlefield preparation I predicted on the last Burke debate post.

Which team is lowering expectations the most? It seems to me that Walker's camp could do more in that regard.

This is always good. Obama and his handlers thought Romney was an idiot and he cleaned Obama's clock in the first debate.

When you don't think your opponent is sharp, you don't prepare and we know how that turns out.

I hope Burke assumes Walker is an idiot and doesn't prepare. It'll be fun to see.

Walker should not do "On the Record". It is hosted by Neil Heinen( an asshole, IMO) and geared to the Madison TV
market. Why would Scott Walker bother talking to anyone in the Madison market when it is what, 95% liberal?

Spend your time in places where people may be willing to listen to what you have to say.

Brando said...

This sounds like the strategic lowering of expectations--remember when Republicans acted as though in the upcoming Bush/Gore debates it would be a victory if their guy didn't look like Goober Pyle facing off against Cicero?

Burke will obviously be well-coached, and try to work in a few zingers and quotables. If the format goes a bit unexpected though, or Walker throws her for a loop, I wouldn't be surprised if she stumbles.

Yes, thank God we were spared a second Obama term!

This is all you will hear from Walker at the debates:

Move Wisconsin Forward.
Hard working taxpayers.
3.6 billions deficit.

That one picture shows no blacks present doesn't mean that blacks were not present.

I expect Mary Burke to respond to debate questions by offering long, scripted, replies that are mostly unrelated to the questions.

Whether she does well with this would depend on whether the moderator and debate rules let her get away with it.

I'd certainly expect her to insert a few canned "War on Women" slogans.

garage: "Move Wisconsin Forward.

3 Distinct messages, which is at least 2 more than a garage-level intellect is capable of retaining post debate.

"Bin Laden is dead.
Detroit is alive.
If you like you health plan you can keep your health plan, period."

Yes indeed, that evil Scott Walker invented repetition of campaign talking points.

Thanks for playing garage. I'm sure you've already earned your Mary Burke cookie for the day.

MM ...That picture shows no blacks were in the carefully controlled optics. Last time Michelle visited for Burke no questions were allowed by reporters to a crowd members. That shows these joint "appearances" are carefully choreographed when Obama Dems are doing their thing.

Last week you were calling me Penguin. Before that you thought I was Garage. Now you're back to calling me Inga.

Sounds like you need more tin foil for your hat, because your story keep changing.

You're the cunt that made snarky jokes about Texans dying from Ebola.

I never said such a thing and given your past history Inga probably didn't either.

If you have an actual link of me (or anybody) actually doing so then please provide it. But if you have nothing but these baseless accusations then continue on with your fourth-grade name calling and sexist put downs.

Fuck off bitch.

Would it have helped if he had said "no blacks who were not paid to attend"?

Of course not - he's just the Governor of all the people - Why should he be bothered to address those who might not agree with him?

This isn't government but a series of white supremacist show trials,...

Thanks again.

There are at least three black kids in that photo. Hilarious.

Two people to the right of the center. There are 17 people in the first row -- he's 7th from the right.

The guy in the center has a v-neck sweater (red, of course) and a tie. Dressing matters!

Looks like photoshopping skills have improved awesomely in Madison

In a story over the weekend about diversity on college campuses, NPR News highlighted an incident in 2000 when UW-Madison officials spliced the image of an African American student into a crowd of all-white Badger football fans to make the crowd look more inclusive.

The attempt to Photoshop diversity was caught for a number of reasons. Among them: 1) The student cropped into the photo, Diallo Shabazz, was still at the university. 2) The Photoshop job was pretty bad. You can actually see the sun pointing one direction on Shabazz and from another direction on everyone else. 3) UW-Madison actually keeps a lot of its public relations photos online, and the original photo taken of Shabazz was still there.

I don't know. I think the kid on the left might actually be a black hispanic.

I liked Garage's characterization that there are "at least three." Hey Garage, which of the other kids do you think is "passing?"
