"I have a history with charismatic, attractive men who just wear me out."

Best Hillary Clinton quote ever.

ADDED: Hillary couldn't have meant us to hear that as sexual, but how can you not? In my old mind, it resonated with Rod Stewart's "All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand/But you turned into a lover and/mother what a lover, you wore me out."

By the way, "'Maggie May' was more or less a true story, about the first woman I had sex with, at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival." "Maggie May" is such a brilliant story song. I wrote a paper about it in my college poetry class, where the assignment was to take some pop song and analyze it the way we'd been analyzing poetry.

There is little more compelling than a woman nearing Zeke Emanuel's expiration date discuss her history with men.

...and the best Hillary quote is I'm sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and disagree with this administration, somehow you're not patriotic. We need to stand up and say we're Americans, and we have the right to debate and disagree with any administration.

It will be oft repeated during her administration.

Unknown বলেছেন...

Well, she does look worn out.

Ridden hard and put away wet. Minus the factory work.

"It will be oft repeated during her administration."

What I'm sure we'll find out is that although it's *not* not patriotic it sure is sexist and misogynist. So they'll be covered either way.

Bill Clinton as attractive -- in the abstract -- never worked for me. This view is supported by the unattractiveness of the women he pursued before his first presidential election. He knew his own limitations.

Bill Clinton as powerful and charismatic I get. Bill Clinton might be attractive once the power and charisma are taken into account. And I'm sure the women he is currently bedding as an ex-president are more attractive.

Still the word attractive is jarring to me.

I always hated the "coax" line. It just sounds awkward to me.

kcom বলেছেন...

"but how can you not?"

I didn't. What I took it to mean is that she has spent her entire life jumping through hoops covering for men. (Isn't that a great record for a feminist?)

It takes a lot of energy to clean up after someone, especially when they refuse to help but just keep making things messier. That's the definition of Bill Clinton. So the question is, why did she choose that role? What's wrong with her? And is that what we need in a national leader?

Unknown বলেছেন...

There is the challenge of a fairly intelligent woman, there is the urge to protect and fix a damaged personality.

Another song lyric I hate is from the Doors song Touch Me: "I'm gonna love you, 'til the stars fall from the sky, for you and I."

"For you and I"? Evidently, Jim needed to brush up on basic rules of grammar.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Then why did she choose the adjectives "charismatic" and "attractive."

Clearly, she thinks she's saying I have had prominent head-to-head battles with 2 of the most amazing men in history.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

I can see how the quote connects to "you're likable enough."

These 2 men were and are so over-likable that it's exasperating and don't you ladies: 1. know what I mean, based on your struggles with men, and 2. stand in awe of me because I had my struggles with the most charismatic, attractive men?

cubanbob বলেছেন...

I don't care what Hillary Clinton said or meant. She has been around long enough and accomplished nothing and just generally poisons the air around her. She is rich, old and a grandmother. For once she can do the right thing and just be gone.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

""I have a history with charismatic, attractive men elevating me to a level I would never have achieved without them.""

Jaq বলেছেন...

Pop songs are the only poetry anymore. The rest of what is purveyed under that label seems to be political hectoring, writer's therapy, or little observations better suited to Instagram or Twitter.

Jaq বলেছেন...

Not all pop songs, of course.

No, I think it means pretty much what she said: She is now tired of doing, again, what a successful girl needs to do to get anywhere in this chauvinistic sweatshop that is the White House. Something she earlier belittled Monica for.

Parsimony, Ann.

Hagar বলেছেন...

The Clintons started with just student loans and are now estimated to be worth about a quarter billion and control perhaps as much as another billion in assets and neither has yet to spend a night in jail.

Don't say Hillary! has not achieved anything!

Skeptical Voter বলেছেন...

Ah well even the most charismatic attractive men do "charity work" on occasion. Either that, or they were blind drunk.

pm317 বলেছেন...

First of all she said this in the context of explaining why she chose to serve as SoS in the Obama administration.

Of course there is tongue in cheek reference to it being sexual -- that is the lighthearted 'cute' thing that made everyone laugh.

But joking aside, she needs to give us a serious reason why she considered being his SoS and what she might have wanted to do with that opportunity. And joking about Obama being charismatic and attractive of which he is neither for the majority of this country right now is a mistake. She will come across in the vain of that other idiot Paltrow. And lumping Obama with Bill who is really charismatic is another mistake.

pm317 বলেছেন...

And that Rod Stewart song is pretty cool. I may have heard it on the radio but now it will stick. Thanks!

Unknown বলেছেন...

I reject the premise of the characterization. "charismatic and attractive" do not factor with my view of two men who do a lot of lying and cheating. All that manipulation must be exhausting. But the grand manipulation must march on!
Worship and swoon, blind faith nation! Get your shrines ready.

*Obama is attractive. I'll give him that. Turns out he's not terribly likable, unless you're a wealthy holllywood starlet.

Hagar বলেছেন...

See "Arab Spring" as an opportunity to establish "foreign policy creds" for a 2016 run for the Presidency.

MadisonMan বলেছেন...

@pm317: What? You may have heard it on the radio?

Yoikes.

It's probably one of the most-heard songs in my life. (Although to this day I can't distinguish its beginning from that of You wear it well).

It's the poison that it measures, brings illuminating vision

She could tell us that "Arab Spring" was not her idea (she was against getting rid of Mubarak in Egypt); she could tell us what really happened in Benghazi that might in turn exculpate her; she could tell us where Obama was during the attack that night;

she could pull a Panetta on us and save herself.

pm317 বলেছেন...

@MadisonMan.. LOL..I didn't grow up in this country! I left India when I was 23 and went to Europe and there started my initiation to western classical music with Bach and Beethoven. Then I came here and my friend at grad school started me off on Led Zeppelin and I was hooked (hard rock).. I listen to 100.3 Big Rock on my radio almost everyday on my way to work which is an hour long drive but still have trouble keeping the band names and songs together except for some of the few that are easily distinguishable.

Now she claims those 3:00 AM do overs were too much for The Hilldabeast. She likes a slow hand, a gentle hand, a soft hand.

Vince Foster tried as hard as he could.

Lnelson বলেছেন...

A folksinger from long ago once sang this about the Hillarys of his day:

"Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn't talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares Propaganda, all is phony"

Brando বলেছেন...

Hillary could do more than Michelle Obama to fight the obesity epidemic, because statements like that can keep you from eating for days.

Lnelson বলেছেন...

If she is ever elected, I will be singing this:

"I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
Well, she talks to all the servants
About man and God and law.
Everybody says
She's the brains behind pa.
She's sixty-eight, but she says she's fifty-four.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more."

Lewis Wetzel বলেছেন...

Hillary is a headcase. Boomer women will flock to polls to vote for her. It'll be a regular hen-fest.
What is the deal with Mrs. Obama? Graduated from Princeton with a degree in "Black Studies" -- has there ever been a Black person who failed Black Studies? I mean, if regular old American History is supposed to be "White Studies", I know some White people who flunked that.
And now the woman is supposed to be some expert on child obesity? Wasn't her last job working for a Chicago hospital as some sort of diversity coordinator?

Lnelson বলেছেন...

I would like to pass on this singer's advice to Hillary

"Now I wish I could write you a melody so plain
That could hold you dear lady from going insane
That could ease you and cool you and cease the pain
Of your useless and pointless knowledge"

""steal my daddy's cue" is an intriguing phrase."

Yes, and you'd better believe I used that in my college paper.

MadisonMan বলেছেন...

@pm317, thanks, that makes sense. I was wondering how/envious that you'd avoided this earworm plague from Mr. Stewart.

B বলেছেন...

After reading the lyrics a few times, now I'd like to read Althouse's college paper.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

I'm proud of myself for having chosen something that wasn't an effort at sounding poetic.

I like the way it tells a story through the present moment of watching one's lover sleep. It reaches back into the past and into the future.

And I think the rhymes are elegant, as in the quote " "All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand/But you turned into a lover and/mother what a lover, you wore me out." "Hand" goes to "and" and "mother/lover" is a scary and aptly off combo.

Do you remember what you said about it?

This song/story was set in 1961 and Hustler the movie was also 1961 and Brits are big on pool/billiards. It also maybe shows how young he was that he has to steal his daddy's cue to play pool to make a living/money.

You've got passion and you think that you're sexy

And the guys behind the theater
Found a body in the garbage dump
