"What To Expect From The Emmy Awards’ Robin Williams Tribute."

What is the TV material other than "Mork & Mindy"?

There are 6 things at the link, but not including the pre-"Mork & Mindy" material — from "Laugh-In" and "The Richard Pryor Show" — that I embedded on the original "Robin Williams has died" post.

what was the name of the show he was just in that was cancelled? Williams seemed a bit snobbish when it came to television. He thought it was beneath him that he had to go back to it to pay the bills.
But a lot of actors are turning to tv, over movies these days as tv seems to be the medium that is best to tell stories. Granted, sitcoms are usually crap.

I think it was "The Crazy Ones".

Outside of guest spots on other shows, he really just has that and Mork. I guess they can honor whoever they choose, but it seems a bit like the Oscars doing a tribute to Terry Bradshaw's movie roles for his cameos in Burt Reynolds films.

Probably have some clips from stand up routines on HBO or some other cable channel. He was also on the Tonight Show a fair amount and on Letterman.

He was also the guest on Whose Line is it Anyway? Which I think was amazing for a different reason. He usually steals the stage, but there you could see the respect he had for the other comedians, following the etiquette of following their leads, setting them up, and otherwise making it four people together.

Carson. He was great on Carson.

And movie reruns, the staple of television for decades.

And Happy Days, which he was brought in to improve after that shark jumping thing. He broke that barrier in about one episode. Robin was not a second fiddle kind of guy.

He also was involved in probably the funniest Carol Burnett skit there ever was. (And that is saying something.) It involved Carol as a bereaved recent widow and Robin as the clumsy visitor at the funeral home.

They should just play that skit, say we miss you Robin and sit down.

Of course they won't.

What to expect? What they always deliver - an over-the-top, maudlin visual hagiography that will double as a application for sainthood.

This is no slam against Williams per se, just Hollywood's obsession with itself.

"Crazy Ones" is one of the 7 items at the link.

He was really funny as a talk show guest… in a way that's less funny now.

harrogate বলেছেন...

Didn't he also make some cameos on Happy Days as Mork or am I misremembering? I can't get to the link so if it's there , oops

harrogate বলেছেন...

Ah now I see they reference Happy Days in the Mork and Mindy link. Very good. I have memories of those as some great guest appearances !

I expect Obama to make an appearance and spend 30 minutes talking about himself.

From Carol Burnett.

If I were to be doing a Robin Williams tribute, I would focus more on his character acting than his clowning around. I was never much of a Robin Williams fan as a comic, I can only get so many laughs due to frenzy and chaos.

But my appreciation of Robin Williams improved dramatically (see what I did there?) when he started playing serious roles and doing them brilliantly.

But he didn't play those on TV.

Are you forgetting "Failure to Launch"? What's a movie without a little Terry Bradshaw nudity?

Paul said "I expect Obama to make an appearance and spend 30 minutes talking about himself."

Paul wins the thread.

Have we forgotten that Mork and Mindy changed TV? The experience of watching TV changed from canned tuna fish to hot jazz. The envelope was significantly stretched, and we owe that to Robin Williams. For this he merits tribute.

What can we expect from the Lauren Bacall and James Garner tributes?

Is it just me or was Mindy really cute?

Williams was a very good dramatic actor as well as a comedian. I prefer to remember him for goodness of his work than the sadness than propelled him to his death.

David বলেছেন...

I see Madison Mad linked "The Funeral" at the Carol Burnett show. Thanks MM.

George M. Spencer বলেছেন...

"Mork and Mindy" aired from 1978 to 1982....and it was all downhill after the first season.

Would be like honoring a 1945 radio star in 1980s.

Time passes.

I liked Williams' cameo in "Dead Again". But, that was film, and full of words they'd have to bleep out in prime time TV.
Count on the Emmys to focus on The Genie, Mrs. Doubtful, and Nanu-Nanu.
(The bit he did with the eggs in the kitchen was a gut-buster, I'll give you that. Also, whoever said that Mindy was cute was right. So sad about Dawber's sister, though...)

Robin Williams: The only one where you never knew what was coming next - but it would be funny.

One thing I know about Parkinson's - it can take away your ability to speak clearly enough to be understood. For Robin Williams above all others, that would be just an unendurable disaster.

Revenant বলেছেন...

If the tribute had nothing but Mork and Mindy clips, that'd be fine. It was his best TV work and one of the funnier sitcoms ever made.

Guildofcannonballs বলেছেন...

I expect people who didn't read the article about the science to making folks cry will nonetheless induce tears.

Maybe this time with prejudice.

It is like me and Pryor: if I were allowed to be racist I would be funnier, on a shit day, than Richard on his better one.

And I can write better than Shakespeare and, I guarantee you this, melt down worse than Tiger after his and Obama's 2010 Golf Digest cover.

Doesn't Comic Relief on HBO count? [Bradshaw has stretched as an actor]

Guildofcannonballs বলেছেন...

So the question is Give Some Business $80,000 in renovations and $500,000 in free advertising without any other outside influence and see what happens or.....
Send in the Brit.

I like Master Chef.

Williams memorial will have a bunch of Brits because suicide is serious and stuff guys.

Buck,

I expect Obama to make an appearance and spend 30 minutes talking about himself, or maybe longer.
