Lugers don't like being appropriated by The Canadian Institute of Diversity and Inclusion for use in a pro-gay video.

It's a slow-motion video of double-lugers rocking back and forth in an effective visual double-entendre and then the words: “The Games have always been a little gay. Let’s fight to keep it that way.”

The NYT article quotes some Olympians:
“They’re making fun of our sport for their cause and it doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me,” Christian Niccum, an American Olympian, said after completing two training runs at the Sanki Sliding Center. “If I were to go hug my dad and someone took a picture and showed it in really slow motion, they could use it in a video like that and that’s just ridiculous. It’s my dad. Can’t we show affection to each other without it being some sort of sexual contact? This is sports. It’s the same thing. Why does it have to be like that?”

Another American, Preston Griffall, who will compete in the doubles competition, which begins Wednesday night, said most doubles lugers understand that they are an obvious target for jokes. “We’re two dudes, laying on top of each other in spandex,” he said. “Of course people are going to make fun of it.”

Neither has the better perspective.

One is dismissive, which is good. He realizes people will make fun and he's past it.

The other is argumentative, which is good, because he realizes the constant gayification of everything needs to be pushed back against.

Both perspectives are appropriate, neither is better than the other.

Sigivald বলেছেন...

Lugers?

What do old German pistols have to do with pro-gay diversity ads?

(I mean, nothing wrong with that; ask the Pink Pistols.

But Lugers, while schmexy looking, are not well-adapted for tasks of self defense.)

n.n বলেছেন...

Who would want to be involuntarily included in promotion of the Dodo Dynasty? Most people do not engage in dysfunctional behaviors. This ad is a defamation of character. They should sue the institute which advocates for the normalization of behaviors antithetical to evolutionary fitness and their slander of normal men and women.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

If you think of a gun -- like Sigivald, above -- you're only making them seem more gay.

oleh বলেছেন...

It is a very North American (or maybe Anglosphere) thing to see homosexuality in any physical contact between males that goes beyond a hand shake.

Therfore I picked option 1.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

"They should sue…"

Who should sue? The unidentifiable men used in the video, who probably don't know who they are, or just any double-luger who feels offended?

Because what better way to establish your old-time masculinity than to not take a joke, be easily offended, and run to the Daddy judges for help because Canada is making fun of me?

I hope you've never complained about our litigious society, because if so, you'll have to answer for that too.

SGT Ted বলেছেন...

The poll assume a humor and free expression equality that doesn't exist.

When the non-gay people make the "fag" jokes about two men laying on one another, it's "homophobia" and "hate", but when the same joke is made by the gays, it "celebratory".

That's what's objectionable.

Otherwise, yea, sometimes I do indulge in a "huurrhuurrhurr" at a good joke about gays involving straight men being physically close.

They used to make us line up tightly in the Military sometimes and called it "nut to butt" and told us to "make your buddy smile!" when doing it, so you would get the idea of how close you were to be. It was kind of funny.

The Cracker Emcee Refulgent বলেছেন...

Well, there's Gay and then there's "gay!". I suspect that it's the latter that the Lugers object to being identified with.

jr565 বলেছেন...

What was that movie with Will Ferrel where he plays the figure skater who decides to skate with another man as a couple, even though they were not gay?
Did that look gay. Hell yeah it did.

SGT Ted বলেছেন...

If you think of a gun -- like Sigivald, above -- you're only making them seem more gay.

This is your rifle, this is your gun. This one's for fightin' and the others for fun.

How gay is that?

Titus বলেছেন...

"sue them"....wow, how liberal.

n.n বলেছেন...

No, the suggestion that they sue is offered in jest. I am merely parodying the incorporated civil and human rights activists. They routinely use litigation or its threat to force a compromise. The homosexual activists, and their heterosexual patrons, have followed this path to normalize their behavior.

n.n বলেছেন...

jr565:

It wasn't particularly gay. In fact, it was quite boring with an obnoxious pretense.

B বলেছেন...

There better be a slow-motion video in 2016 of women's beach volleyball players slapping asses.

You know, for gender equality.

Art in LA বলেছেন...

Is the g-word like the n-word? It's ok for gays to call something gay, but not ok if one is hetero? Enquiring minds want to know ...

There is one striking similarity between lugers and (some of) the militant gays.

They lead with their crotch.

Clyde বলেছেন...

I saw the headline and thought, "Why would a pistol care?" Then again, some would think curlers were something that went in a woman's hair. The Olympics is a weird time.

Gays. 3-5 percent of the population, responsible for 50 percent of the bitching.

Fucking sick of it already.

I was always generally supportive of things like gay adoption, civil unions, gay marriage where state voters were fine with it.

Not anymore. I'm tired of the bullshit surrounding it. I mean, it never stops. Look at the garbage surrounding "cissexism" and transgenderism. They want to invent new pronouns and are seething with outrage at people who use "him" and "her" and their derivatives instead of some bullshit gender neutral pronoun they made up that no one knows except the gender studies major crowd.

They can all go stuff it.

mccullough বলেছেন...

How does one become a luger, anyway?

n.n বলেছেন...

Jason:

If we are to relax objective standards, then the issue is no longer about homosexuals, but all unions. The normalization of homosexual behavior through marriage, etc. represents arbitrary discrimination which is intolerable. I also expect people to reserve their dysfunctional behaviors and not promote their normalization. There is already sufficient confusion in our world which does not need to be compounded and transferred to succeeding generations.

I've just flown in from California, where they've made homosexuality legal. I thought I'd get out before they make it compulsory.

Once that was funny, now it's prescient.

My spouse told me about this ad last night and my response was, "Who would make that? It sounds really offensive and homophobic."

Oh apparently, if you're the right kind of people, you can make fun of athletes "acting gay."

But let's see what happens the second some player cracks a joke about Michael Sam giving another player a love tap on the butt. WWIII.

The Godfather বলেছেন...

This is the first time that my vote on one of Althouse's polls turned out to be way out of step with the overall results. I thought both of the guys quoted made legitimate points, but Preston took it all with a self-deprecating sense of humor, and that made it better in my view.

But I lot of respondents to the poll and a number of commenters seem to be angry and bitter. I say, Lighten up. Gays are never going to be more than a small minority in our culture. If you don't like them, ignore them. Don't let them spoil your day.

Renee বলেছেন...

It's not an issue of making everything gay, but making everything into an example of sexual objectification.

Renee বলেছেন...

The Godfather... but our social media can not ignore 'them'.

People who I know who are gay, do not care with having gay being inserted into every commercial or news item.

Live Science had an article on gay acceptance in Russia on my Facebook feed. Why?

Chevy is selling morality about family with two men jumping a broom in their commercial. Why?

Strange.

The voters in Althouse's poll send her a clear message which she will laugh at and then push back in her reader's faces.

LOL!

I saw that last night and said to my spouse, "Chevy is taking a big risk with this ad campaign. Right now, a certain part of the country is predisposed to buy its vehicles while the other side is very comfortable with Subarus and VWs. Do you really think those blue staters are going to trade in their Priuses for a Chevy Traverse? Or have you just insured that many of your old buyers are going to jump into a Ford?"

It makes no sense to me.

Renee বলেছেন...

@Birches

If they own a large dog or two, they own an SUV. Yes. Liberals love their dogs. Even though being liberal is associated with cat ownership.

Dogs are family, here in New England

Jason says: "Gays. 3-5 percent of the population,"

But, according to Obama 5% of people are not to be worried about. Remember when that % was used about the people who had their individual health insurance and those are are people whose plans were going to be cancelled? As I recall Jay Carney said this was an insignificant amount of people and we needed to stop worrying about the minimal amount of people/policies.

So.. if Obama and gang can say screw THAT 5%, I say in return - hey you 5% that are gay - SHUT THE HELL UP ALREADY!

If the government doesn't care about them well I don't care about you! And please, I don't want to hear how 2 wrongs don't make it right!

And yes, I am sure I am an evil, conservative, bitch! Oh, well. Life goes on!

Renee বলেছেন...

Jumping over the broom was culturally insensitive to African Americans. They are experiencing very low rates of marriage and high rates of fatherless. But so many African Americans are so poor, they can afford to buy a new Chevy so Chevy doesn't care about them as potential consumers.

"A recent report on racial disparities in car ownership reveals that one in four Black households (24 percent) and one in six Latino households (17 percent) does not own a car.  This is compared to one in fourteen white households (7 percent) who are car-less. In the eleven coastal counties with the highest incidence and future risk of hurricanes, people without cars are disproportionately people of color.  These include counties in Houston, Providence, New Orleans, Tampa, New York City and Miami.  In Orleans Parish New Orleans, for example, over 35 percent of African-Americans, 26 percent of Native Americans, and 27 percent of Latinos don't own a car, compared to 15 percent of whites."

I thought that Canadian spot was brilliant, personally. Though not as good as The Onion's devastating take.

Hasn't the Canadian Institute for gays and Whatever watched men's skating?

I hadn't realized that people were seriously using alkene stereochemical nomenclature for sexual orientation. So tell me, is there a "gem" designation yet? I suppose the Germans will jump into the fray soon enough and insist on entgegen und zusammen. After that will come rectus and sinister as we move to be even handed.

I honestly think that some of these companies are seeing which way the wind is blowing in DC and are producing these PC ads to avoid or fend off being targeted by Holders Civil Rights Division and the IRS for "discussions" and audits and things.

SGT Ted বলেছেন...

Not butch enough.

Besides, everyone knows the gays are ice skating.

Renee বলেছেন...

@SGT Ted

Agreed. A preemptive move to make sure there is no boycott/social media complication of their branded products.

Chic-Fil-A has its base, but will never expand in the Northeast despite the long lines at the mall's food court here. The CFA in New Hampshire was a corporate sponsor of the gay pride parade.

I don't want to be paranoid, but it sounds mobbish. Agree with our politics or we will disrupt your business. The mayor of Boston tried to stop CFA in downtown Boston.

Enough influence to be in a Chevy ad or a Live Science article about gays in Russia, who is behind this push?

Not your average person who is gay.

Would it? I doubt it would cause much of a stink. It's not as if Saudi Arabia enters the luge competition.

The whole gay thing is an issue because of the Russian govt's treatment if it. You wouldn't see these ads if the Olympics were being held in the West.

This video reinforces the stereotype that gays are obsessed with sexual pleasure and see everything in the world through the lens of sexuality.
