"Phonetic description of annoying sounds teenagers make."

Text — in case you didn't memorize all that " Creaky-voiced long alveolar glide with mid front unrounded vowel and glottal stop" business — here. Via Metafilter.

ADDED: And if you enjoyed that guy — whose name is James Harbeck — here are all of this videos. I enjoyed "8 odd sounds from other languages that you could never make except you probably already have":

(Somehow, I found it irresistible to make all these sounds!)

Uh oh, The Blonde makes those sounds all the time.

Harbeck is quite good. I admire him. I've been working on both singing and speaking recently. It's basically just another fine motor skill, but it's far from easy.

I didn't hear him queef.

Allah Ackbar wasn't in there either. That sound always creates universal cringing.

I like the names best. What could be funner to say than alveolar implosive glottal stop?

That first vid made me lol, also miss my son-he's 20 now, but the next time he's home I'll ask him to do a "talk like a teen day".

The 13 year old watched avidly, then starting mimicking. I took the laptop away. Is there any end to their annoying ways? Or is that called "30"?

Chirbit: That link was cool, Althouse

No, sadly Tari, it doesn't end at 30. It's pretty much forever with some people.

I could make 8 of the sounds. Number 9 is beyond my abilities.

Sorry for the double-tap. That always happens on my first post!

He left out the vocal fry. That's the squeaky voice effect as in, "S. C. Johnson, a family company."

So, my baby girl is a very active preacher, hand gestures, the whole works. What's fun is that it's not in English so there's all sorts of sounds that she makes that I wish were in English, some repeatedly. They're going to get lost, abandoned on the shoals of English communication, but I wish I could capture them and make words, new words, better words.

wyo sis, he's really not as annoying as all that - I felt bad for even saying so. :)

I can make most of the sounds myself, as well. Lots of practice when I was younger, I guess.

Teens put the "dip" in "dipthong."

traditionalguy said...

Huh? Why all this vulgarity saying "frickative" over and over and talking about uvulars.

Re: first vid. It's not just teenagers. The sound he makes at the 35-second mark has long been a favorite of my mother, who is now 94.

Good examples of alveolar and lateral clicks can be found in the "click song"or Qongqothwane made famous by Miriam Makeba. Most local children here, irrespective of language group, learn the song in kindergarten. Qongqothwane is the Xhosa name for a bug.

Bottom line: There's nothing so trivial that someone, somewhere, won't study it. Enjoy the decline.
