"But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation."
Jason Collins has strong political connections. Bill Clinton said: “I have known Jason Collins since he was Chelsea’s classmate and friend at Stanford."
And Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) was Collins's roommate at Stanford: "For as long as I’ve known Jason Collins he has been defined by three things: his passion for the sport he loves, his unwavering integrity, and the biggest heart you will ever find. Without question or hesitation, he gives everything he’s got to those of us lucky enough to be in his life. I’m proud to stand with him today and proud to call him a friend."
Collins has been in the NBA for 12 years and will be a free agent at the end of the season. Does he face abuse within sports? He says he's led a "double life has kept me from getting close to any of my teammates." There's always politics. The man has some powerful friends there.

"I saw this on twitter."
I don't know what you mean by "this."
Watching people fall all over themselves to praise him as "courageous" is embarrassing.
If you think it is courageous for a non-working, doesn't have to work, millionaire, to announce his sexual preferences to an adoring media and political class, you have no sense of proportion, nor do you understand what 'courage' actually is or means.
Might help the cause if he were a better player.
The beatings will continue until morale improves....
So softball and women's basketball are not major American team sports?
"I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport."
"But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation."
OK. since your team missed the playoffs and your announcement came after that, you're not actually the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport.
you're not actually the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport.
Yeah, I noticed that right away.
The meme started with ESPN and that's that.
So he plays for the other team?
According to ESPN the big sports news of the day is a backup QB that can't throw a football is released by a 6-10 team.
He wants better endorsement deals. Now he'll get them.
Start what conversation, exactly...?
The one where the progressives and liberals come together and have the big circle-jerk about faggotry?
You run with that, tools. I got better things to talk about. I was raised by better people.

A marginal player - if he doesn't sign with anyone next season will there be accusations of homophobia?

Which is why Jason Collins was on ESPN live at 1PM EST.
Idiot.
If you can only validate your life because someone like you is gay and plays a sport professionally, then I guess this is important.
I don't see how someone's private business is my business.
But I would add, the Jets are a crappy organization and irrelevant team, so why they are talked about for more than 10 minutes shows an East Coast bias.
He's not the first. Billie Jean King immediately comes to mind.
In fact, there's an entire wikipedia page dedicated to openly gay athletes.
More political line-drawing about how gay, black, green, red and gender neutral the Democrat leadership is going to appear to be at the moment. Declare your loyalty and see if you can hedge your bets and keep your seat.
As for me, my cousin is a polygamist, transgender, cosmopolitan Eurocrat who has since fallen in with some African Muslims, so I've had to do a lot of evolving and soul-searching.
It may spill over to Republicans a bit, as the media will force it on them too.
Collins seems like a good first impression maker for the issue. But the gay men are socially acceptable men news is old news.
Can't wait till a white guy comes out so my sons can have a role model.
Does he face abuse within sports? He says he's led a "double life has kept me from getting close to any of my teammates.
When you consider the locker room behavior of the pro athletes toward female reporters I think its reasonable to assume he's going to get some flak. Then again maybe not. If his teammates liked him before, his coming out should not make a difference.
Martina Navrotilova was a bad first impression for gay women. She seduced a married lady into leaving her husband and children to become her lesbian partner, and 5 years or so later she left her with nothing.
exhelodrv1: A marginal player - if he doesn't sign with anyone next season will there be accusations of homophobia?
You think that's not the exact plan?
(I've never heard of him, or most NBA players, so I'm just assuming that he's not that good by NBA standards based on the comments. But I'm not doubting for a second that the fact that he's becoming a free agent isn't tied to this - either to guilt people into paying him more than he would otherwise be worth, or to have something to complain about if they don't.)
All that said, though, good for him, I guess, not hiding who he is. I generally agree with Madison Man, though.
I have an announcement of my own to make, which is that I think Dina Matos is a fine looking woman.
The NBA is 78% black these days.
I think we should have a national conversation about black homophobia and bigotry.
This would have been so much more poetic if the player was Rudy Gay!
This isn't a big deal, but pity the black man who comes out as a conservative!
I'd find it a little more courageous if he did the Anderson Cooper thing - just lived his life and let people say what they want, but then maybe answer a direct question if asked.

WTF conversation is this supposed to start? Jesus Christ. OKOK. The gays are the greatest!!! Neverending BS.
Black and gay. I'm sure he'll find plenty of understanding and acceptance 'mongst his "homies".
Jason Collins is a really good guy. He's popular with his teammates and his coaches. Celtic's coach Doc Rivers (a former player (and pretty good one) if you didn't know) has very high praise for him--higher praise than I've ever seen for someone not named Pierce, Garnett or Rondo.
Pretty sad that Ann can only view this kind of shit through the prism of "how will this advance all the gay causes I'm passionate about" instead of just seeing it for what it is--a good guy finally deciding to be honest with himself (and by extension, the rest of the world).
And Lyssa, he's not becoming a free agent so he can make more money, he's becoming a free agent because his current contract is up and the team he was playing for has no further need for him. He was traded to DC midseason by Boston because of Rajon Rondo's injury--they suddenly needed a scorer off the bench, more than they needed a big man that doesn't shoot much at all.
Those that know basketball are appreciative of his abilities. Those that don't have no idea.
But for Ann to decide to chuck him into some pigeon hole--yay he's gay!--is insulting to him, I think.
Lyssa said...

He decided, in the wake of the Boston bombing, that life could change really quickly and he was tired of not being honest with himself and others. Man has a twin brother (who also played in the NBA)--his own brother didn't even know.
So he tells some people. When you got married I bet you put it in the paper.

More WTF. She seduced? The other lesbian had no agency (I hate that word - kick me please). Then years later they split up? This is some sort of bad behavior? Yeeechh.
Martina was great for her sport. She zoomed passed little Chrissy Evert, and made Evert improve her game to catch up. Back when tennis was sorta interesting (which part of women's tennis is most interesting? Answer: the clothes and the bodies beneath - OK, I'm a pig).
"...my cousin is a polygamist, transgender, cosmopolitan Eurocrat who has since fallen in with some African Muslims, so I've had to do a lot of evolving and soul-searching."
Now that would make for a 'good' blog post.
first openly gay athlete playing an American team sport
Martina Navratilova played.doubles tennis for years before Mr. Collins showed up, but bravo for him no longer leading a double life.
Did I say "always known for three things?" Sorry, meant to say four things. Never mind.
a backup QB that can't throw a football
You know shit-all about football, garage.
He is expected to benefit financially from coming out or at least it won't hurt him.
I hope historians give Obama some credit for this too.
doubles tennis is not a major American team sport.
You know shit-all about football, garage.
That was a 20-25 yard pass.
my money is still on Aaron Rodgers
As garage says--that was a pretty poor through the air pass. Great run after the catch. Receiver YACked the shit out of it.
Tebow threw it about as far as he could.
I don't understand the whole press conference atmosphere of 'coming out'. Just show up with your significant other like straight people do and I think folks will figure it out.
The public announcements that so and so is gay is ridiculous and is just craving attention. Does anyone really give a shit?
If Obama would come out, he would be the first openly gay president to go down in history.
CEO: And Lyssa, he's not becoming a free agent so he can make more money, he's becoming a free agent because his current contract is up and the team he was playing for has no further need for him.
Oh, I didn't say that he was, just that, given that he is becoming a free agent and not a particularly well desired one, this announcement could be beneficial.
And hey, this seemed to me like a big announcement, but maybe he just mentioned it to a few people like you said. I'm skeptical, though. And I'm extremely skeptical of someone claiming that an athlete, who they don't personally know, is a "really good guy" as if we shouldn't dare question his motives. He's just a pro-ball player.
Great run after the catch.
That usually happens when the quarterback hits the receiver fully in stride.
Look at woman collegiate sports. My cousin was ran off her basketball team because she wouldn't play with the lesbians. It was so bad that she was stalked and her boyfriend was knifed. Her coach was an instigator of a lot of this. She transferred schools and when her new team played the old team, her coach had to keep her off the court. So I don't want to hear bull crap about how courageous Gay people are. They can be just as big of bullies as straight people.
One thing I know for certain is you don't want your daughter playing college sports.
You know, I'm very blessed and proud to live in a day and an age of first.
I propose that we change 2013 to number 1, for a few days, to honor this courageous achievement.
Speaking of girl collegiate sports, what is it with girls softball that causes them to have thighs like Jerome Bettis?
Squats?
There was zero reason for him to become and 'openly' homosexual NBA player. The only reason he did was for notoriety and to further an ideology. The millions of homosexuals that come out of the closet to zero fanfare and with no agenda other than simply identifying is what should be celebrated. This is now a circus, the fact that he has 'powerful' political connections don't mean shit other than we know it's the typical leftist players.
"I didn’t set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport."
Yeah you did you fool. The levels of delusion that people use to justify their actions is astounding.
Actually, Tebow's deep passes are fairly good. He has problems with the shorter routes where timing and quick reads are more important.

Andrew Sullivan read this and jizzed in his pants.
Interesting that Jarron goes out of his way to say that his twin brother knew nothing of this. That's impossible to believe. He obviously had to give bro deep cover.
The public announcements that so and so is gay is ridiculous.
They want to encourage other millionaires&billionares living a life of hopelessness and fear.
And hey, this seemed to me like a big announcement, but maybe he just mentioned it to a few people like you said. I'm skeptical, though. Feel free to question his motives all you like, I suppose.
It's pretty easy to justify calling someone a good guy--you just base it on the opinions of people who you believe to be good people. Doc Rivers has always carried himself with class, for instance, and he's been in the NBA a long time, so when he says Jason Collins is a good guy and he wishes he had a team of Jason Collinses, it makes more of an impact than something a jr Kennedy or Bill Clinton says.
When Mike Gorman, who's been calling Celtics games for 30 years and has always been a stand up guy lauds Collins, it means something.
If all the praise I read or heard about Collins was based on Ann posting that Kennedy and Billy Bubba love him, I'd have my doubts. But people I've "known" (and known)for many years...I'll take their words for it.
And for the record, the people I'm talking about were praising Collins long before today, when it became cool to do so.
I've read that a lot women basketball players are gay and I didn't need Baylor's Brittney Griner to come out to know that she was gay.
Predictions of more coming out so says Jared Max.
Thus begins the Golden Age of gay basketball.
The man is realizing that he is a subpar pro center and wants a career.
Well, gay male basketball.
But that's still something.
I can't wait for the movie, like 42, except about gay basketball.
Maybe he could host Project B-Ball, a contest reality series about gay ballers breaking into pro sports.
Tebow's deep passes are not good. Even the 20 yard pass he threw against Pittsburgh wobbled like a sick duck.
I like Tebow the person. Tebow the person could be a hell of a football player if he'd play a different position.
Tebow the qb sucks.
If Tebow had any sort of ability, one of the other 31 teams would've at least tried to trade for him when the jests were looking.

CEO,
Saying he throws a decent deep pass is not saying he would make a good NFL QB. But you have apparently fallen into the camp of exaggerating his weaknesses.
His impact on the league is roughly the same as mine before he decided to come out.
But, apparently, one cannot critique the subpar performance of a pro athlete without being one themself.
Guess I cannot criticize Obama either. Never been President, ya know.
And Tebow is worlds better than Sanchez.
BFD. Defined forevermore by the targets of his genitalia.
This is the most overhyped "news" story of the day. A non-starting pro athlete near the end of his career comes out of the closet. BFHD.
It is courageous to quit living a double life? I would think it pretty risky to try and get away with living a double life. I'm sort of with Jay, the meaning of courageous is lost, regardless of his financial situation.
And it seems to me all this hullabaloo about coming out is like the old Debutante Balls. Perhaps we can just have an annual Gay Debutant Ball like the WHCD. They'll get the same media coverage without this foolishness of calling them courageous.
I can't wait for the movie, like 42, except about gay basketball.
Me too!
By the end of the week Collins will be compared favorably to Jackie Robinson.
Tebow the qb sucks.
CEO, your NFL experience is...what, exactly?
He says he's led a "double life has kept me from getting close to any of my teammates."
That loud "whoosh" you hear is all his former teammates breathing a sigh of relief.

I must've missed the exhaustive investigative journalistic pieces about whom Mr. Collins bones.
Otherwise, it couldn't have been less accidental if he tried.
Everywhere Tebow has been qb, the team has won.High school, college and the pros. The Jets, an allegedly pro team, did not use him at qb. They used a non-winning qb, instead.
damikesc
I'm a Denver Bronco fan and I was excited when Tebow was drafted. I liked his tenacity and dedication. Also like his charity work. But I have to tell you he is not very good at throwing the ball. Sure, he threw a few good passes and even won an amazing playoff game. But teams are letting him go for one reason - he isn't consistent with his throwing. And it's not like he hasn't had a chance.

The veil has lifted!
Some people want to be defined by their skin color. Some people want to be defined by their gender. Some people want to be defined by their behavior. Why would anyone want to be defined by a behavior without redeeming value to society or humanity?
He is indeed courageous; but, with an ulterior motive. His sexual behavior should have no bearing on his game play. His motive is publicity and money. Actually, in a day where people routinely exploit differentials and gradients to advance their political, economic, and social standing, he is merely part of the status quo, not unique, but merely one of a democratic majority who engage in opportunistic behavior.
Yes. This "revelation" is quite boring. The first man to play basketball, who also choose to engage in a dysfunctional behavior with no redeeming value to either society or humanity. He's not the first, and he certainly will not be the last. This is progress, I guess.

Dave actually believes multi-millionaires in America are "denied housing"
Dave is pretty fucking dum.
What part of pampered millionaire don't you get Dave?
He is MORE likely to have employment now, be it with another NBA team wanting to prove its "diversity" or as a democratic politician.
Or with more endorsements, and speaking gigs. How is his employment opportunities limited?
Yeah, I'm sure Collins will have such a hard time finding housing, and his good buddy Joe Kennedy will not be able to help him get married.
But hey, other butt pirates like you have a new hero to worship! Maybe you can donate some money to him, since he is now so oppressed.
There is nothing wrong with him cashing in on his sexuality, there is nothing wrong with him lobbying for gay issues if he so chooses. But its not heroic, its not brave, its not courageous, and anybody who says otherwise is a fucking retard who should be mocked incessantly.
Like you.
Dave said...
Otto Fenichel said, "people become stupid ... when they do not want to understand, where understanding would cause anxiety or guilt feeling, or would endanger an existing neurotic equilibrium."
So one might suggest that while his "coming out" is correctly labeled a courageous act; most of the people posting here are too emotionally and intellectually challenged to comprehend it.
Then you delude yourself into believing that outing yourself in the NBA as a homosexual is a courageous act. Stupid yes, courageous no. It's this thinking that lends value to the valueless. His intrinsic worth to the NBA was to play basketball and win games and championships. Since that has failed, his plan B was this and you or at least people that think like you want to inject some type of sympathy or compassion into it and if the screed doesn't meet the smell test by others, why they are prejudiced, bigoted homophobes making intellectually naive commentary to follow. Only by your definition which in it's current state has little to no relevant value since no one cares. Try harder to be less maudlin please.
The mean-spirited, vulgar, and naive nature of your question proves my point.
Hey, remember when Dave and his ilk were always saying how brave Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan were since there were mean-spirited, vulgar comments made about them all the time?
I do!
And, when the left took to the Internet to celebrate the deaths of both Reagan and Thatcher, Dave was probably so busy telling everyone how brave both Maggie & Ronnie were that he didn't tell his fellow travelers to knock that vile stuff off.
Dave seems to have selective standards on when to refer to "bravery"
Nobody is shocked by this.
Dave lives in an America where millionaire celebrities don't get employment because they are gay.
Meanwhile, in case anyone needed more evidence that Phil Jackson is an insufferable tool, this story does good work on that front.
Yeah even when you extrapolate his NBA stats to 36 min per game, he barely makes a contribution at 6PPG and 6 ribbies.
So he is middle of the road performer like CNN's news reader Don Lemon. Both will be remembered more for being gay than being more than competent.
Martina Navratalova, totally denied employment!
She didn't comment on NBC on tennis regularly.
No sireeee!!!
"President-Mom-Jeans said...
Fuck you Dave"
No thank you -
However, you do continue to demonstrate a gross misunderstanding of the issue of sexual orientation. Human relationships are about much more than sex. Characterizing same-sex relationships as ONLY sexual denys the totality of those relationships. Perhaps you don't know any lesbian or gay couples who have been together for decades. I can assure you that their relationships are about much more than sex.
He's gay.
So what.
NOBODY CARES.
So I guess from now on, instead of simply identifying him as "an NBA player," we are supposed to call him "the gay NBA player." And instead of calling him "Jason Collins," he is now "the gay Jason Collins."
Or would it be inappropriate to label him in that way?
"Jay said...remember when Dave and his ilk were always saying..."
Thanks for reminding me of all those things I NEVER SAID. Assuming you know what someone thinks only shows your ignorance.
"Why are women obsessed with homosexuals?"
Dadvocate
I'm all about people being honest about their sexuality, removing the taboo, making people think about things in a new light. Not sure what the other ladies think but that is what one woman thinks.
I can't wait for the Sports Illustrated follow-up a year from now on Collins where it is revealed he's living in his car because he's been denied housing.
It will be a real tear-jerker.
Dave said...
Thanks for reminding me of all those things I NEVER SAID
You're funny.
And a silly hypocrite.
Characterizing same-sex relationships as ONLY sexual denys the totality of those relationships
Um, the people engaged in such relationships identify themselves only on the basis of the sex taking place in said relationships.
Do try and keep up.
He's gay.
So what.
NOBODY CARES.
Oh sure. You conservatives and religious fundamentalists made gay people's lives a living hell for years and now it's all "Who cares?"
Who do you guys think you're fooling?
Dave can't seem to understand that he has selective standards when using the word "courageous."
As we've already established, "courageous" doesn't apply in all situations where one is the target of mean-spirited, vulgar comments.
Only those situations that suit Dave's political biases.
Isn't courage fun?
OK, phx, you caught us. We do care. We care immensely -- so what is your sexual preference?
Tell us. Tell us now. Because we really do care to know. Because it really is our business to know all about your private life.
You conservatives and religious fundamentalists made gay people's lives a living hell for years
That's right!
If only that son of a bitch Reagan had shut down those bath houses in San Francisco in 1983!!
Whoah Dave, so clever of you! Saying "Fuck You" was obviously a proposition on my part towards you, you smoked me out. I just can't quench my desire for humorless gay propogandists devoid of any logic mindlessly parroting the new talking point.
Brothers and sisters have longterm relationships too, but they don't involve genital to genital contact.
Look Dave, I get that you are super excited that you have a new rainbow flag to wave, and a new teammate on team buttsex to cheer for, good for you. If this makes you proud, well, your life is pretty sad. But roll with it.
I wish Collins well, he is smart to be the first one to cash in and maybe extend his career. But you do your cause a disservice by pretending this is some sort of heroic action and that he is risking anything but adoration and even more wealth flowing to him. As well as a slap in the face to homosexuals who actually do face actual discrimination or backlash.
But hey, Daily Kos says he is a hero!
"You conservatives and religious fundamentalists made gay people's lives a living hell for years..."
See?
Unreasoned, unaccountable, unproven, unicorn fantasy-filled bullshit.
That is, an Obama voter.
Has anyone heard from Doug Gannger, Gay Man and Gay Journalist?
And to be clear on this --
NOBODY CARED when A.C. Green divulged that he was a virgin.
That would be Doug Dannger!
Yeah, NOW you don't care who's gay cause YOU guys who are likely to get your ass kicked.
The value of coming out gay is really getting to the point where I'm very tempted myself. I'd like to be called "brave", a "trailblazer", and get interviews and stuff. If it gets a few more benefits attached like some easy groupie chicks, then I'm going for it.
Notice the mentality here:
Who do you guys think you're fooling?
Gays circa 1988: "We don't want to be judged, leave us alone"
Gays circa 2013: "You wingnutz better tell us how courageous and normal we are !"
Don't worry, phx is too dumb to see the irony here
But if we must talk about being "courageous" --
Letting people know that you are a virgin at nearly 40 years old is quite a bit more courageous than saying "hey everyone, I'm gay!"
See?
Unreasoned, unaccountable, unproven, unicorn fantasy-filled bullshit.
Yeah, that never happened. Nope, not here. Not in America. Not by Conservatives or Republicans. We ALWAYS welcomed homos with open arms, so to speak.
"..cause YOU guys who are likely to get your ass kicked..."
So you weren't pissed that asses were getting kicked, just that it was your ass getting kicked.
Or else you don't make any sense, which is equally likely.
Unprincipled and unaccountable.
Just as i said.
phx said...
Yeah, NOW you don't care who's gay cause YOU guys who are likely to get your ass kicked.
He says to a bunch of gun owners...

In other words you have no proof for your silly, bullshit claims
He says to a bunch of gun owners...
Guys like YOU are so dumb you're only gonna hurt yourself with a weapon. Or someone you didn't intend to hurt.
Now that I think about it, how did Magic get HIV?
Bago:
The excellent Showtime TV show Shameless had a couple episodes where the drunken no-good Dad [who had six kids] pretended he was an oppressed gay so he could get all kinds of goodies from the Gay Mafia that was pushing its gay agenda.
OT:
The other day people were laughing at the university feminist complaining about [random event] impacting women and wondering how she'll ever find a job. Read the link and you'll find she's proven herself qualified for one job: Democratic Congressional staffer. So remember what you're funding the next time they "ask" for a little more.
Summary: Global Warming has a disparate effect on women and will force them into hardships including sex work.

Does this mean that Joe Kennedy was taking it up the poop chute in college?
He does seem to have a funny walk . . .
Oh man, phx is going all caps on us.
That's some high level reasoning there.

If I remember correctly it was bad crack.
So you weren't pissed that asses were getting kicked, just that it was your ass getting kicked.
Oh hell. Am I clutching my pearls because gay bashers can't get away with the bullshit they're used to?
Yes, stop. It's terrible. Some homophobe might get hurt defending his civil rights to call you a queer. Stop. Please. Stop.
What a terrible hippy pacifist liberal I am.
You conservatives and religious fundamentalists made gay people's lives a living hell for years
Damn these fundamentalist!!!
Above, you'll find a short video composed of the floor speeches some top Democrats made about SSM. At the time, Republicans wanted to block gay marriage in Massachusetts by amending the constitution with an official marriage definition. Democrats argued against that, but they didn't argue in favor of gay marriage. They argued that DOMA made such an amendment unneccessary. They assured people like Rick Santorum that the slippery slope case for gay marriage was bogus.

You pathetic coward.
Crack is Whack!
"Yes, stop. It's terrible. Some homophobe might get hurt..."
See what I mean?
Illogical, unprincipled, flighty, emotional.
Just what this country needs right now, real national unity.
Man, you're just like Lincoln.
Mary Todd Lincoln.
"Methadras said... they are prejudiced, bigoted homophobes making intellectually naive commentary.."
I have not accused anyone of prejudice, bigotry or homophobia.
The posts here have generally dismissed this act as being self-serving, political or meaningless. But in fact it is a first. The question "Who will be the first openly gay athlete in a major team sport?" has been answered.
But other questions remain, for example, how many more basketball, football, baseball, and hockey players will come out. And will this challenge to the stereotype of the "sissy" change public opinions on other related issues.
I clicked on SI earlier today and was quickly reminded why I recently cancelled my subscription.
There is little sports reporting and more and more quasi sports, elitist writing.
Interestingly enough, they are not taking comments on this story or any of their related pieces. Why?
Worried about homophobic comments? Maybe.
Most likely don't want to hear readers point out that they created the story out of thin air and then let the rest of the DC/NY/Hollywood cabal promote it to try and convince the unwashed masses that this is IMPORTANT and COURAGEOUS.
Media masturbation at its worst.
Now, the question is --
If some NBA player (or some other major sport) were to come out tomorrow with a big press conference and announce "I am a heterosexual. Look how courageous I am," would the NBA discipline him?
Stop arguing.
I have the hottest buns in Denver and that's a fact. Except they form a crack. Wanna see the crack in my buns? I invite Jason Collins and all his well-heeled liberal friends to come over here and eat my tight, firm, hot buns.

Without irony, you'll be back soon telling people here they don't know how to make an argument.
This damn fundamentalist demonizer homophobe!!!
At one point today, Mr. Kerry, who voted against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, a year in which he was up for re-election, remarked that ''marriage is viewed as a union between men and women.'' When the remark drew hisses, he interjected, ''That is a historical, cultural view.'' When the crowd hissed again, Mr. Kerry simply shrugged and said, ''That's my opinion.''
Hot buttery glutenous maximus. Oh yea!
