"But since I am, I’m happy to start the conversation."
Jason Collins has strong political connections. Bill Clinton said: “I have known Jason Collins since he was Chelsea’s classmate and friend at Stanford."
And Rep. Joe Kennedy (D-Massachusetts) was Collins's roommate at Stanford: "For as long as I’ve known Jason Collins he has been defined by three things: his passion for the sport he loves, his unwavering integrity, and the biggest heart you will ever find. Without question or hesitation, he gives everything he’s got to those of us lucky enough to be in his life. I’m proud to stand with him today and proud to call him a friend."
Collins has been in the NBA for 12 years and will be a free agent at the end of the season. Does he face abuse within sports? He says he's led a "double life has kept me from getting close to any of my teammates." There's always politics. The man has some powerful friends there.

not really. he's unemployed.
Without irony, you'll be back soon telling people here they don't know how to make an argument.
No, I'll be here telling you you don't know how to win over single women 18-30.
I am quite concerned about Titus. His absence from this thread is troubling.
Perhaps he is traveling to Washington.
Just what this country needs right now, real national unity.
Man, you're just like Lincoln.

I'm not running for office, you screeching, hysterical idiot.
Susan Stewart Rich said...I'm all about people being honest about their sexuality, removing the taboo, making people think about things in a new light. Not sure what the other ladies think but that is what one woman thinks.
Making people think about anything in a new light is always the wrong approach. It's the complete wrong verb because it connotes coercion. That's exactly what your opponents are fighting here.
I mean, causing people to think differently is a complete different ball of wax than making people think something. In any case it's easier to make people do things than think things.
"No, I'll be here telling you you don't know how to win over single women 18-30."
Oh, that part is easy.
But try do it when what you're offering demands reason, accountability, and principles.
We'd be better off if they couldn't vote, really.
I mean ferchrissake: Obama. They voted for Obama
Fucking twice.
Flighty fantasy-filled solipsism like that doesn't like hard and cold reality.
But hard and cold reality likes them.
They'll meet up with it soon enough. And they'll wonder, some of them, how they could have been so goddamned ignorant.

I gotta admit, young men that age aren't much better.
And the majority of yoots grew up taught by state-loving educrats, and some Marxists in college. Little logic, much propaganda.
So conservative thought seems like a foreign land.
By design, of course.
But try do it when what you're offering demands reason, accountability, and principles.
That's not the hard part of your message. I think you need to rethink that.
That's the GOOD part of your message, the part that people would take to.
phx,
I am always identified by others as conservative and/or Republican. Ten years ago, I volunteered my time and resources to produce, direct and edit a no budget comedy program written by a gay writer/actor. This involved donating usage of my cameras, lighting and sound gear as well as the hundreds of hours of shooting and editing.
The show starred an openly gay character and his straight female friend. One of the supporting actors was a gay man whose career is performing in drag.
One of the scenes involved the gay star kissing another man (who happened to be straight). The star had a crush on this man and was nervous about the scene. Thus, I had a three person meeting wherein I informed that I had to be convinced that this kiss was real or we would keep doing it. (The star liked that!)
I am libertarian/conservative. One of the actors on the show even labelled me a Republican. (I'm not.) At the release party for the show, I was sitting at a table with a friend of the show's creator who I had not met previously. He started gratuitous Bush-bashing to which I interrupted and said, "Just so you know, I voted for Bush."
He looked me dead in the eye and said, "If it were up to me, you would not be sitting at this table."
Phx, you, in this thread, are participating in the exact same kind of bigotry that man did.
Don't be a bigot.
"...you don't know how to win over single women 18-30"
Shoes
Matt I have said on this web site at least twenty times, I'm SORRY for the Republican moderates. The Republican rank and file is chock full of extremists and people who scare the hell out of the bulk of undecided and moderate voters.
If you have a problem with my characterization of the right, I suggest you reread the comments in this very thread.
That said, I agree you have a point not all conservatives, righties, or Repubs are in the least homophobic. And there are homophobes in Democratic party as well.
But your side has the image problem, and if you are wondering why, reread the thread.
"That's not the hard part of your message. I think you need to rethink that. "
OK. So what's the hard part? What was it about Romney that was so bad to the reason and accountability of the 18-30 year old women?
What was it about Romney that was so bad to the reason and accountability
I don't think it was Romney that was SO bad. It was the baggage that went with him. The Republican rank and file, tuned into Rush Limbaugh.
First openly gay athlete in a major American team sport.
There are quite a few qualifiers in that statement, but one that's missing is "male". Because I'm pretty sure that there are openly lesbian and bisexual female athletes in major American team sports. I'm also pretty sure that no one is hearing their names on the news, because no one particularly cares.
phx,
Thanks for the clarification. As it is, it is comments like yours earlier in the thread (as well as numerous other things outside of the blogosphere) that led to me, years ago, to vow to never vote for a Democrat again. Your "side" has image problems too.
I happen to agree with a number of the comments made by "my side" in this thread. Most notably, Jason Collins' coming out was not courageous. Hell, my outing my self as not liberal at the release party was more brave. (And it wasn't even that.)
Had it been the very beginning of his professional career... that would have been brave. As it is, there is a good chance that he would not have had a job next year had he been straight, gay or purple.
Now, the NBA, to NOT look homophobic will be sure that someone signs him for at least one more year. In fact, if I were a betting man, I would bet he plays exactly one more season (and probably not even a whole one.)
I am guessing that Cuban signs him to the Mavs for the token season.
What the fuck are you babbling about Phx?
That people don't think Collins is brave and heroic that makes everyone extremist bigots?
You are a dumber twat than usual today.
Now, this...
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/espns-chris-broussard-calls-homosexuality-448377
...is brave. Who is more likely to have a job next year: Collins or Broussard?
You are a dumber twat than usual today.
Hard to imagine a political party would have an image problem with you championing their cause, Pres Mom Jeans.
I happen to agree with a number of the comments made by "my side" in this thread.
I often find myself in agreement with a number of conservative comments in these threads. The overall tenor, however, is pretty low.
" It was the baggage that went with him. The Republican rank and file, tuned into Rush Limbaugh."
Yea, yea, binders of women, and Rush is fat, but we're talking about reason and accountability now, and I bet you got nothing on that, do you? Take your time.

I don't know what you mean. I think reason and accountability should be your trump cards. Too bad you guys don't play them often enough or well enough.
Now the shame card, the slut card, there's some cards you don't forget when they get played.
But hey, don't worry about it. I'm sure you guys will win the 2016 presidential election.
@phx wrote: If you have a problem with my characterization of the right, I suggest you reread the comments in this very thread.
Just stop beating around the bush. The problem you have is not with a leader's "followers" (that's incredibly weak btw)--it is the same problem Althouse had or at least projects which is to say: "Romney was OK but I couldn't...I just couldn't bring myself to vote for a man who doesn't support gays."
Never mind that Romney was not anti-gay; it was enough that he wasn't pro-gay. It the same problem people had with Palin and especially McCain (not to distract but I'm sure it will)--neutrality wasn't and isn't an option for you guys.
In a nutshell: the left made SSM a litmus test.

That's not really true. This is not one of my most important issue. I'm just slumming it here.

Dream teams.
If you guys (the Repubs, their allies and frenemies) can't play the SSM card to your advantage, too bad.
You bet the Dems will take advantage of that.
Some of you sound really self-righteous with this "He's not courageous! You guys don't know what courage is!" jazz.

You're redefining "courageous" to pursue a silly political agenda
No - I would define "courage" as - action taken despite fear of the consequences.
He's gonna have consequences?
He is the most protected human being on the planet - black, Demo Establishment, hohmosexual.
The only thing else he could do is check into Gosnell's clinic and make himself a womyn.

Oh sure. You conservatives and religious fundamentalists made gay people's lives a living hell for years and now it's all "Who cares?"
And on what planet did this happen?
I mean, you do have press clippings, or something.
Yesterday or this morning or whenever, phx was bitching about how Republicans and Conservatives and whoall only cared about nothing but money.
Now we've spent our lives doing nothing but persecute those poor, benighted homosexuals.
Make up your mind.
PS phx is so busy threatening Conservatives about their political apocalypse, one wonders what he thinks is going to happen in the '14 elections.
If you guys (the Repubs, their allies and frenemies) can't play the SSM card to your advantage, too bad.
We don't know how to play cards...
And here I was thinking it was the Hispanic vote.
I don't know what you mean. I think reason and accountability should be your trump cards. Too bad you guys don't play them often enough or well enough.
For the love of God, why don't you ever, for once, try to get Democrats (or whoever is "your side") to change?
Democrats succeeded in expunging their KKK element (at least outwardly). Why can't you work from within on the fiscal aspects of the D's which irk you and which make you sympathetic with the Republicans you respect?
Another way to put this is that there are two approaches to reaching fiscal conservative/social liberal--from one side or the other. But you're only interested in giving Conservatives a makeover. Why is that?
phx is so busy threatening Conservatives about their political apocalypse
Scared ya, huh?

@phx: Are you old enough to remember Sen. Bill Proxmire (D), Wisconsin?
Fiscal Conservative

Before Kermit, the test was abortion.
I wonder what will marriage look like, down the road.
For the love of God, why don't you ever, for once, try to get Democrats (or whoever is "your side") to change?
I don't have to! I'm on a conservative site! You're doin' it for me!
Pogo is so impervious to reason that he couldn't reason his way out of an offer to prevent him from being hung up by meathooks. Through his butt-hole.
He is the dictionary definition of a silent tantrum thrower. A silent screamer, if you will.
The anti-gay insults are really a spirited, well-reasoned and politically astute knee-slapper. Is there no one to whom he won't condescend? I mean, other than the stupid and the prejudiced? Other than those with permanently made-up minds?
The idea that there is anything upon which Pogo hasn't already made up his mind is about as sensible as entertaining the existence of the Loch Ness Monster, The Abominable Snowman or Bigfoot.
Hence, reason is expendable.
Conservatives don't need no stinkin' reason. THE TRUTH was revealed to them long ago, and it don't need no revision. All scientific knowledge was revealed in the Bible.
They are the keepers of the all-knowing forever truths that never change. Evidence is evil.
Cain't get that coalition thang goin'.
Dividing to conquer is just not the way forward.

I do vaguely remember Proxmire.
Why can't you work from within on the fiscal aspects of the D's which irk you and which make you sympathetic with the Republicans you respect?
They'll do that just as soon as Republicans learn the meaning of social reasoning.
As I never tire of saying: they're all Sullivanists now.
Think of Sullivan the way some people might think of K-Mart.
And K-Mart doesn't suck.
"Sullivanistas" are the hispanic wing
"Sullivaniste" denotes the "artiste" cadre.
Speaking of arch-Sullivanists...
...where o where is his handmaiden?
Oh, ok I get it that was funny. Suffixes and all that.
phx: Just so you know, Chickie seems innocent, but he called Chaz Bono's willingness to appear on Dancing with the Stars an exercise in vainglory.
Just so you know where he's coming from.

Are you being funny or is this a serious question?
"Sullivanistas" are the hispanic wing.
Is that the one where you can smoke pot, or the one where upon entering you are an English citizen?
Ah, I see irrational "mean Titus" aspect of Ritmo has appeared so I'm outties.
I'll be back later for a body count.

Okay sure. You want to get some reasonable, moderate, bipartisan understanding going. I'm in for that.
But if you're going to play hardball we get an at bat, too.
Hey Ritmo. I thought everybody's willingness to appear on DWTS was an exercise in vainglory. That's why we watch it.
I'll be back later for a body count.
Wimp.
We all reserve the right to get pissed off. Palladian broke down something terrible last night, for instance. I won't explain it - since I don't think you'd get it. But everyone can get upset.
Me? I just ask that those who would decide social policy show some interest in some basic social reasoning.
The same way I ask that those who would decide science policies show some basic interest in science, and how it works.
Why is that wrong?
That's why we watch it.
He gave me the distinct impression that it was being unashamed of her gender reassignment surgery that he found vainglorious.

Remember Ann's admonishment to pay attention to what women feel, or maybe she said their sensibilities, or something.
Of course, it might help if these women had real Dad's who raised them.
How do you want me to be conciliatory, edutcher? What does conciliatory from me look like to you?
Just guessing here, but probably something like:
"Thanks for being so openly craven and uncooperatively partisan and feckless in your candidate choices that America had no choice but to re-elect Barack Obama.
Now let off some steam by oppressing me for being gay."
Probably something like that.
I clicked on SI earlier today and was quickly reminded why I recently cancelled my subscription.

Oh no, not Shitmo.
Thread over.
He hears Putumayo world rhythms the rest of us do not hear.
In today's politically correct (i.e. opportunistic) environment, it would require greater courage to come out as a polygamist.
Have there been an announcement of the first openly polygamist athlete playing in a major American team sport?

This explains a lot.
I am not sure 'courage' is the exact word I would use. But I applaud him doing it not so much for himself but for other athletes who may now feel a little less pressure to come out.
These days EVERYONE'S courageous. That's a media term. People who get caught up in iconic scenes doing something they're forced to do because of circumstances requiring them are called "courageous." That's a media thing, right?
The problem for you guys is you object to that and miss the deeper story.
Why you choose THIS moment to get all cynical about the use of the word "courage," a commonplace enough offense, is not smart, not very practical.
A big league ball player becoming the first to come out of the closet. And you're all sneery because some media fops or celebrity liberals use the word "courage"? How tone deaf are you?

I'm saying the use of the work 'courage' seems to be a bit of a stretch or certainly a different use of the word than is customary.
Sure, I understand that. I'm saying I believe if you are honest with yourself you will remember or admit that almost everyday, in every crisis situation (Boston, other disasters or mass killings) people are called "courageous" by the media who really weren't. All kinds of situations - diseases, stories about deprivation or hardship - they misuse the word courage a lot.
But you guys decide NOW's the time to quibble! Now I can get all self-righteous about that error here or I could just laugh because it's what keeps the Repubs from garnering more gains than I'd be happy to see them with. I think I'll laugh.

Your Party is simply still homophobic, misogynist and racist.
Notice how this goes:
Democrats good
Republicans bad
Inga Democrat
Inga good
How fucking sad is your life?
Gun ownership won't win over human rights
You are clearly a low information voter.
I think if anyone should be labeled courageous in this post and comment thread it's Palladian.
The Democrat party can go fuck itself. I've been around long enough to remember many instances of that party telling gay people the same thing. The only reason that the Democrats have decided to embrace the gay issue is because it's safe for them to do it. If it becomes unsafe again, they'll throw us queers to the lions, once again.
Any freedoms that gay people have re-captured were hard-won by gay people, not as the gift of a bunch of politicians.
Don't look to the government to "grant" you rights.
I remember one time offering to buy one of Palladian's midlevel talent pieces of art - almost as much out of pity for his economic situation as due to some tiny lingering bit of actual interest or appreciation, and he told me how honored he'd be to engage in this bit of economic exchange. He was really excited about it.
I often prefer transactions with small business owners that I know. Who work in my neighborhood or nearby. Who care about our community and actively seek to contribute to its economic betterment.
And then I thought, Palladian believes that the only compassion due anyone is that which should NEVER be compelled.
So I decided to wait. I figured, if he ever achieves that step in becoming fully human, where he realizes that our obligations to one another are necessary and only a choice if one prefers to promote an immoral society where nothing - not even any right - is due anyone else, then I might indulge him.
Suffice it to say, he never achieved that last step. And I watch as he falls on his sword over it as we speak.
Good luck, Palladian. To each his own (fate).
I think if anyone should be labeled courageous in this post and comment thread it's Palladian.
Palladian is being a close-minded, self-righteous fool.
You can feel free to call that "courageous", if you want.
But most people have the sense to not call the obstinately, deliberately self-defeated courageous.
I love watching people crowing about supporting a President who was re-elected with fewer votes than the 1st time around (a first in modern history) say the Republicans - who fully control 26 state legislatures, the US house, and 30 governorships - are super-duper unpopular.
Of course by pretending the only thing that matters is the Presidency, they comfort themselves in that warm little cocoon.
The only reason that the Democrats have decided to embrace the gay issue is because it's safe for them to do it.
It sure as shit wasn't the goddamned REPUBLICAN party that finally brought society to that point.
No one wants to take your guns and things
You clearly are a low information voter.
Barack Obama, Senator Diane Feinstein, and Cory Booker are all on record saying they would ban handguns.
Are you stupid or just a liar?
Notice how more personal details are now being deployed in an attempt to shame me, the ungrateful faggot, into backing down or shutting up. They'll mock the homeless, the differently abled, the underemployed, the homosexual— all their supposedly beloved oppressed minorities— if they dare step out of the bread line of their largesse.
Well, one benefit of having grown up gay in a rural area is that I learned early on that shame was fatal, and that bullies can't be allowed to shut me up or push me down. It doesn't work on me.

Gun ownership is a human right? Really, oh my God Palladian.
Notice you can't even begin to articulate how or why an assertion like that is wrong.
Notice how you breezily accept that gay marriage is a "human right"
Really, oh my God!!!
I don't believe in charity for the uncharitable, Palladian.
Notice how the attacks have become even more personal, now aimed at my artistic ability, my intelligence, my work.
Well, if there are things that I'm even more self-confident about than my self-hood and my sexuality, it's my talent and my mind.
If anyone is interested in checking out my sketches and drawings, they're here. I sell prints but my printing outfit is currently in storage until the mid-summer. I do still sell original drawings.
Now Inga bizarrely claims the government inventing a right to gay marriage is an example of "self preservation"
Inga dumb.
Notice how the attacks have become even more personal, now aimed at my artistic ability, my intelligence, my work.
Oh the melodrama!
Somebody cue the tears.
lift a finger to give gays their constitutional rights?
Notice how this goes:

How fucking sad is your life?
Try caring about someone other than yourself and you'll get your damn compassion, Palladian. You selfish thing.
Ritmo, I've come to the conclusion that some people simply do not have the instinct for self preservation.
Not caring for and investing in the society one is a part of is a strike against one's own drive for self-preservation.
Good demonstration right here of the "compassion" of the left. Well done, and all we had to do was just let you talk for a while among yourselves. Just beautiful. Jay trolled the trolls again.
Well to all of my good friends here, stop thinking of each other so harshly every now and then. Ritmo, Inga, Palladian. Lord knows I'm not sayin' I'm better 'n' you. But damn there's a lot of hate on going down here.
Oh bahoh20 too!
Bag may be saying that he believes that charity for the unrepentantly uncharitable is a good thing, and something he loves to do.
Clarify if that's where you stand, Baggie.
But damn there's a lot of hate on going down here.
A lot of history, too.
You're almost certainly unaware of it.
A lot of opportunity for a few people to have proved themselves better people than they have and than they are.
Don't think I'm not at least as disappointed.
how fucked up is that?
Pretty fucked up.
Inga "You people are truly fucked up. Guns are things, just things. No one wants to take your guns and things. You will always have your precious guns, don't worry."
You're right because many of us will double-tap you when you try to take them. This will cause others to go away.
In other news the gays have a new favorite fag and celebrate. The heterosexuals look on puzzled and wonder what the big milestone is. The Syrian populace wonders who gets gassed next but in the US we need to focus on the real priorities. An athlete has announced their gay!
ritty has revealed herself to be more despicable than I even thought possible.
That is saying something.
I don't hate Palladian at all, quite the contrary, I like him a lot and I do not understand he siding with those that do not have his best interests at heart, like the right wing.
...how fucked up is that?
And notice how, when those whom he'd rely on for last resort treat him to the standards of their enemies and his own allies, he snorts and wails.
Pretty strange. Does he not want to be abide by his own principles?
What about Ron Paul and the "let him die" guy during the Republican primary debate on insurance?
I'd like to think that these glibs just don't think things through. They're really not callous, just glib. God will provide and all.
But you ask for the slightest bit of acknowledgement, gratitude and moral vindication, and they'd rather cut off their own nose to spite their face.
Pretty weird.
Inga: "Palladian Jay is your boy, embrace him."
Inga, Lynn Stewart and Kathy Boudin are your gals, embrace them.
You're right because many of us will double-tap you when you try to take them. This will cause others to go away.
That's so cool.

Ritmo and not recognizing that those he embraces, would rather see him dead because of his sexuality
How fucking stupid and sick are you?
You post the most silly, idiotic drivel here every day, and you of all people suggesting that you've uncovered some grand plot Palladian can't see is obscene.
You are so invested in the idea that you're good because you're a Democrat, you can't even realize how absurd you look.
Go to hell.
ritty has revealed herself to be more despicable than I even thought possible.
That is saying something.
Oh please you say some variation of that three four times a night.
Seriously, though. I'd never discourage anyone from giving to help Palladian, too. And if he gives me a P.O. box I'll gladly send a money order. More than once.
I just don't trust that he understands the meaning behind such giving.
I do not understand he siding with those that do not have his best interests at heart, like the right wing.
Right. All he needs is a good, caring, wise leftist like you to explain all this to him.
Really. He does.
phx said...

Why do you bother?
Your drivel is dumb, and not even on topic.
Inga: "Ritmo and not recognizing that those he embraces, would rather see him dead because of his sexuality."
LOL
Notice how instead of addressing Palladians specific policy concerns/issues with the democrats, Inga automatically (like all leftists) attempts to infantilize Palladian because she is incapable of addressing the obvious and ever-increasing leftist constraining of personal freedom that Palladian continues to identify and raise as an issue.
Next up, Inga will explain why "global warming" is still "real" because shut up.
Next up, Inga explains how the lefts complete and utter support for the murder of babies born alive during an abortion is really in the babies "best interests", it's just that those dumb babies don't understand what's really good for them...
Jay, how many pieces of his art have you purchased?
He doesn't seem to like for giving to occur in any other form.
I'm serious here. You're choosing to fight with us rather than to send the guy a fucking check. In a minute, your warped-ass nose-picking is going to convince ME to donate right now.
Go fucking do it.
This is the thing I hate about Democrats, the assumption that by throwing gay people a crust or two, I'll be so grateful that I'll vote for them automatically
There is some truth to that. These days, most of the big progressive orgs like MoveOn and the like are run by rich Democrats, whose only goal is to scare liberals every two years into sending them money. All the good work is done by activists on the ground outside the big groups. Politicians will only move when the public forces them to.
Well to all of my good friends here, stop thinking of each other so harshly every now and then. Ritmo, Inga, Palladian. Lord knows I'm not sayin' I'm better 'n' you. But damn there's a lot of hate on going down here.
I have no hate at all. I trade barbs with you guys but, as I've pointed out, that's not hate, it's why we come here (well, one of the reasons). There's only one person currently expressing sociopathic hatred, but I'm not concerned with that person, other than that he's providing an excellent object lesson in exactly the kind of hypocrisy that I've often written about.
C'mon give us a kiss. GIVE US A KISS, PALLADIAN.
BTW Inga, nobody is jumping on the back of Jay's bicycle here, but you cling to Ritmo as he rides through the neighborhood with his basket full of hate and cruelty ringing the bell for him. As you would say: "he's one of yours"
Congrats.
Inga: "They aren't going to get it together to win any elections for quite sometime and "that is a good thing" as Martha Stewert says."
"any elections"
Is it possible someone can be this oblivious?
Based on the evidence, the conclusion is inescapable: Yes
Palladian, can you give me an address or P.O. box? I just feel like helping. This is not the time to quibble about economics.
Thanks.
phx: "C'mon give us a kiss. GIVE US A KISS, PALLADIAN."
Why?
Are you attempting to "courageously and bravely" come out?
Whoops. Spoke too soon. He'd rather insult me and call me a sociopath than be helped.
Priorities and such. I respect the man's principles and wouldn't violate them. His pride is still greater than his stomach, which must speak to how hungry he really is.
Just stop being a douche and ask for the fucking help you need, asshole.

Exactly right. The part that scares me is when politicians get so complacent that they think that the equation works the other way around, that the public moves when the politician forces them to.
And you're backing up my earlier point, that any gains that gay people have made in re-capturing our rights have been made by activists, artists, writers, and individuals. (Most) politicians just step in at the end and steal the applause.
BTW, I say "re-capturing our rights" because I believe that human rights are innate and endowed by our Creator, not granted by government. Government can only either protect those rights or take them away, not "grant" them. That's one of my fundamental problems with the gay marriage spectacle; it's conceding too much power to the State.
ritmo: "This is not the time to quibble about economics."
That's what all leftists say when the reality of their economic policies becomes manifest.
Hence, non-stop steering of the conversation to the war on women (someone alert the Kennedy's!), right-wing white Christian militia's, gay marriage, etc.
The Debt/GDP ratio is now over 101%, so we've got that going for us.
ritmo: "Just stop being a douche and ask for the fucking help you need, asshole."
ritmo, heal thyself.
phx, I only kiss if there's single-malt involved.
Drago, that's awesome that you would foresake all social principle to shift focus from a supposedly hungry man to a stupid political point. And by "awesome" I mean, that makes you a douche.
Well, that makes two of you, anyway.
ritmo, heal thyself.
I'm healed of the urge to help people who tell me they'd resent it.
So, nothing more I can do.
Palladian: " That's one of my fundamental problems with the gay marriage spectacle; it's conceding too much power to the State."
This position is waaaay too principled and consistent (along with obvious) for Inga to grasp.
ritmo: "I'm healed of the urge to help people who tell me they'd resent it."
LOL
If only.
ritmo: "Drago, that's awesome that you would foresake all social principle to shift focus from a supposedly hungry man to a stupid political point.

Political points being made on a political blog posting.
Who could see that coming?

That's exactly what I'm referring to, the infantilizing idea that us poor queers need the loving hand of guidance of the Democrats.
We got where we've gotten on our own, thank you very much.
At this point, we're mostly used as a prop to show how wonderful various politicians are in their infinite tolerance. Barack Obama and his moneymen get to pretend that it all happened because of them. Then when we're no longer needed, or inconvenient (like when they're doing the black church campaigning circuit), they try to wheel us back to the prop room.
"I'm healed of the urge to help people who tell me they'd resent it."
Oh you're helping us just fine. I wish I could help you like usual, but you are just too awesome tonight. Ritmo - the accidental moby.
Palladian, I'm pretty sure most of the commenters here aren't politicians.
Ask yourself this, who has supported gay rights here on this blog? Which commenters have fought to "re capture" your rights? What commenters here have come on every single thread that concerns gay rights and call gays every sort of hateful derogatory names and imply that gays are deviants, such as Jay has time after time. I recall the time he got into with me over his assertion that gays were akin to pedophiles and those who engage in beastiality.
I guess I'm trying to remind you of those who stand with you in something I think you hold dear, maybe more dear than the right to bear arms, or maybe not.
When I say "fought", I mean here on this blog.
LOL
If only.
Good one D.
"That's one of my fundamental problems with the gay marriage spectacle; it's conceding too much power to the State."
And I also feel the same way when I hear religious people and social conservatives decrying the inclusion of same-sex couples in secular marriage; it's as if they're conceding that marriage is solely defined by the State, and that any change in the State's definition of or requirements for marriage will destroy an institution that, in their view, is ordained and defined by God and their churches. Don't give the secular government so much credit!
I do think that it's legitimate for religious organizations to worry that the State will eventually impose their secular definition on the various religious definitions. That's why I advocate the complete removal of government from the marriage business. Everyone's problems solved, everyone's rights intact.
Ask yourself this, who has supported gay rights here on this blog?
If Palladian has the condition he says he's been told he has (and I'm done addressing His Highness directly), then that would explain why he doesn't get this. Politics involve/requires making coalitions. Democrats didn't have the votes for gay rights all along, it took time to build the coalition and lobbying support to get there. Same on civil rights. The progress was slow and steady, but in the right direction (unlike the way the Republicans reversed themselves on it by 1970).
These are social realities that anyone with the basic capacity for it can understand. Maybe your explanation might make sense to him, but based on the immaturity he's showing, I doubt it.

but my love of facts and reason
Which facts? The ones you make up or the ones you think you are entitled to? What reason? The crude self-pretentious, histrionic, aspergers sperglording or the caustic attempt at wit and sarcasm couched as intellectual dishonesty?
Every time I see you take a belabored bowel movement in a thread, the cartoon of a bemoaning wife saying to her husband, "honey can you come to bed please..." and him saying, "I can't... Someone is wrong on the internet..." always brings you to mind.
See Palladian, you are supposed to set aside your freedom, your right to self defense, and your independence because Inga says nice things about gay people she doesn't know. So please ignore that insult and join her. She cares.
LOL
If only.
Good one D.
You're agreeing with Rod Steiger?
Fine. But then I obviously can't be blamed. I can't push bread through a slammed shut jail cell meal tray.
The ones you make up or the ones you think you are entitled to? What reason? The crude self-pretentious, histrionic, aspergers sperglording or the caustic attempt at wit and sarcasm couched as intellectual dishonesty?
Can you please make your comments more emotional?

I bet you really don't see how insulting and degrading that is, huh?
I'm reminded of an old All in the Family episode where Lionel got into it with Mike about how Mike only wanted to talk to him about "the black problem".
A man is much more than his sexuality, stupid woman.
Methadras just made fun of Aspies. (Didn't even use it to make a point. Just straight-up made fun of it).
But he plays for the right team so you'll take that insult gladly, right guys?
