In an area best known for its drug trade and separatist bombings, let's hope they can go back to business as usual as quickly as possible.

I like that I live in a reasonably tectonically stable area. I complain a lot about the weather -- but I don't have to worry about moving Earth.

How do regular big earthquakes affect the psyches of a people over millennia, I wonder?

Khash would be a good name for an aspiring rapper.

Amazing the sheer number of deaths from recent earthquakes in that region. So many that they just round off to the nearest thousand. No wonder life is cheap to so many.

If only the epicenter was further west....

This is a huge quake.
The death toll is currently at 46, and rising.

7.8 is getting too routine. Plus, ever notice how the sizes of quakes tend to be overestimated at first? It's getting to be like hurricanes. The winds always seem weaker than promised when they first make landfall.

Wake me when there's 9.0 in NYC.

Oh, wait. You won't have to.

I was teaching a 3rd grade class talking about earthquakes at about 8:00 this morning. I turned to the USGS interactive map and there it was. We talked about the magnitude and concluded it was probably not very pleasant around there when it was happening. Compared it to one at Old Faithful that happened at within the same time frame. I'd be surprised if the one at Old Faithful was even felt.
Very dramatic for kids.
