"Obama pushing to diversify federal judiciary amid GOP delays."

Headline at The Washington Post — for article that has the top placement on the front page).
In Florida, President Obama has nominated the first openly gay black man to sit on a federal district court. In New York, he has nominated the first Asian American lesbian. And his pick for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit? The first South Asian.

Reelected with strong support from women, ethnic minorities and gays, Obama is moving quickly to change the face of the federal judiciary by the end of his second term, setting the stage for another series of drawn-out confrontations with Republicans in Congress.
This is such a ridiculous Obama puff piece. Obama pushing to diversify the federal judiciary? Like it's an Obama innovation?! I can't remember when Presidents didn't go out of their way pick federal judges from various minority groups.

WaPo is obviously using this diversity hook to criticize Republican resistance to liberal nominees. Does anyone in their right mind believe the GOP objects to these nominees because of their particular diversity factors.

It's a very long article, and the childish level of the Obama PR is so embarrassing I feel I should simply look away....
The new wave of nominations is part of an effort by Obama to cement a legacy that long outlives his presidency and makes the court system more closely resemble the changing society it governs, administration officials said.
Oh, administration officials said? Just take dictation, why don't you? Did these officials use the phrase "cement a legacy that long outlives his presidency" or did you concoct yourselves?

By the way, what U.S. President doesn't have a legacy that long outlives his presidency? How much "cement" is really needed for us not to forget a President?

But I do get the point of Presidents trying to extend their political power by relocating it in the judiciary. That's no innovation. That's an old, old tradition in America....

There actually is an anomalous dearth of Protestants at the very top of the Judiciary. I wonder if Mr. Diversity is helping or hindering that.

Diversity of thought doesn’t matter. What does matter? Skin color, ethnicity, and gender.
The superficial.

Now that we've spent generations elevating the unqualified to high positions in order to punish today's citizens for sins committed by long dead ancestors, can we measure the cost? How much of our failure in education is due to this? Our faltering economy? The cluelessness of many civil servants? We know that none of Affirmative Action's stated goals have been achieved, just ask any Democrat, racism is worse than ever. Time for people to wake up and dispose of the backward, worse than useless "Affirmative Action" that has done so much damage.

As long as they're good jurists, I don't care.

But knowing President O'Zero, they're likely to be weak as dishwater on the law--but strong in liberal outrage.

And what the hell is a "South Asian"? Have we really gotten to that point, where we have to refine everyone down almost to a zip code (or perhaps a UPC symbol)?

Icepick বলেছেন...

I've often heard it said that the problem with Florida is that we don't have enough openly gay black men as judges in the federal courts down here. That's what's really holding the state back.

Well, lots of people will believe it. Whether they're in their right mind or not is a matter of opinion, I guess.

Icepick is right: Florida doesn't "have enough openly gay black men as judges in the federal courts". That's why I moved to North Carolina. We're swimming in openly gay black male judges down here.

I've been getting older. Skepticism is fermenting into cynicism. I turn off the ears and eyes when I hear words like diversity, transparency, and bipartisanship. I'm tired.

Could these currents in my outlook be part of a widespread political phenomenon? If the people stop caring because they think there's nothing they can do, we stop being America.

What he's doing is finding judges who probably wouldn't have made the cut otherwise and will happily do his bidding in exchange for a sinecure.

Willie did the same thing, but didn't try to ennoble what he was doing (in his case, a virtual impossibility).

No True Scotsman fallacy aside, I just had to respond to someone this morning who, aside from thinking the birther movement was an example of widespread racism toward Obama, seems fairly level-headed (works for a living, successfully dresses himself, etc.), so yes, it's possible such people exist.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

I can't remember when Presidents didn't go out of their way pick federal judges from various minority groups.

Identity politics is insane. It's dehumanizing and offensive. It's racist. It's sexist. It's superficial and stupid.

They don't mention the names of the judges!

Nothing about their accomplishments, where they went to school, what they did. All of that is irrelevant, apparently.

At least Obama's fictional creation "Julia" had a name. These actual human beings are so irrelevant, we aren't even told who they are or why they are worthy of these nominations!

Others include the first Haitian American, Afro-Caribbean, Vietnamese American and Korean American judges nominated to their respective positions.

I don't know what's more annoying, reducing everybody to their race, or being smug about how morally superior you are while you do it.

On the current edition of the "Celebrity Apprentice" the two teams were not broken up into men vs women as they were the last few years.
You see when they did the women seemed to lose every time until some men were put on their team.

This time there were two captains. "Rock of Love" dude Brett Michaels and country star Trace Atkins. They chose up sides like in the schoolyard.

Trace only picked white guys and two women. Brett picked second and started off with Omarosa who is the Barack Obama of the reality world. Now Trace went with the best player available method and the only good player he missed out on was LittleJon. But if you read the comments on several TV blogs he was called out for being a racist. You see he wasn't supposed to pick the best players in order to win....he was supposed to pick a "diverse" team which is more important than winning.
Right now he is taking a beating for picking a winning team.

Everything you need to know about life you can learn by watching reality TV.

Why push for more lesbian judges or homosexual judges or hispanic judges or black judges if your aim is to strengthen equal justice under the law? No reason. No reason for the constant diversity push if equal justice were of any concern. Every reason to push for diversity if your aim is social justice for lesbians or homosexuals or hispanics or blacks. And of course social justice can only be meted out at the expense of equal justice. The death of equal justice by the way must end in the death of the ethos that made the western world. "Not amusing," say the professors, as they march forward into the glorious future of social justice, a desert spreading out behind them.

William বলেছেন...

Can anyone explain how being an Asian lesbian gives such a person any especially worthy insights into law and justice? I don't think we should discriminate against Asian lesbians, but I don't see why this quality makes their appointmment in any way noteworthy......Also I would think that if someone becomes too sui generis then their insights into human nature become not deeper but more distorted.

In my heart of hearts, I firmly believe that this was not the first Asian-American lesbian. They exist in multitudes. They are all hot and most of them wear school uniforms and floppy socks.

I love how all the diversity candidates are now diverse in multiple ways. So it's not just the first black. It's the first gay black. Or the first lesbian Hindu. I'm waiting for the first openly black Eskimo Siamese twins one of whom is a transsexual and the other who is a gay hermaphrodite to serve on the district court. Just having the first Eskimo isn't diverse enough.
