"North Korea said Monday that it had 'completely scrapped' the 1953 armistice agreement that ended the Korean War..."

"... following up on a threat made days earlier and increasing the likelihood of a strike against or a skirmish with the South, analysts said."

North Korea is a valuable example of a stable economic system that functions at zero.

We could use some of its features, like power and corruption, to make the US more caring.

They 'completely scrapped' the 1953 armistice agreement, but made $24 by reselling the copper wire, and used the remaining parts to build a 'shabby chic' curio cabinet.

That seems to imply that we and our allies are back in a state of armed combat with the NORKs. Imagine how this would play in the press if it were Cowboy Boosh's failed diplomacy.

Leland বলেছেন...

Look, if we just cancel the F-35 and get rid of our nuclear arsenal; we'll have more money for education and we won't have to worry about this problem. Although funny how the NY Times supports the notion of disarming our troops, but doesn't seem to consider the cost savings of removing the disarmed troops from the 40th Parallel.

নামহীন বলেছেন...

virgil xenophon বলেছেন...

@phx/

Well, cease unilateral nuclear disarmament, for starters. Instead double our capability from it's ineffectual (as a deterrent) historic lows and tell the NORKS that if a single .22cal bullet crosses the DMZ in the dir of S. Korea that we'll knock the shit out of everything with our nukes--with Dear Leader's compound going first. Then also tell the Chinese (who are already worrying openly about this possibility) that once the nukes start flying no telling how many might "accidently" end up on their side of the border while we're at it..

I like it when bad guys remove their only layer of protection. That means the war's still on just like it did when Saddam broke the 1991 pact. Every bullet and more coming their way is legal now. Except in Cookie's mind, of course.

sakredkow বলেছেন...

PS: Diplomats hav a name for the sort of thing I've outlined, above--its called "coercive diplomacy."

I think they call it "fantasy."

We have some 2500 operational nuke warheads. If that doesn't deter DPKR then it's they obviously won't be motivated by how many nukes we have. With over 2000 strategic warheads we'll soon be lobbing nukes just to get individuals in the even of a nuke ward with DPKR.

Then Part II of your three-prong "diplomatic" strategy for dealing with DPKR is to tell them "if a single bullet crosses DMZ we'll nuke everyone of you into the stone age." Please be serious.

Part III of your strategy: to inform China if a war breaks out we'll "accidentally" nuke them. Are you for real? Like they wouldn't nuke our carriers right back?

My point, dear px, is to keep 'em guessing. We have NEVER had a "no first use" policy regarding nukes because of the manpower superiority of Russian and Chinese armies. That uncertainty alone regarding when we might choose to "go nuclear" during any conventional armed conflict played no small role in the deterrence effect during the cold war.

sakredkow বলেছেন...

@virgil I've never been a fan of no first use myself - completely meaningless, unguaranteed. I don't think that's our policy, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Diplomacy, as we normally think of it, just isn't going to work.

To the extent there is a solution to this problem (and there really isn't) it's to tell the Chinese that this is their problem, and they're better fucking deal with it. Don't care how, but deal with it. Reign in the Kims, assassinate them to be replaced by a Dictator-to-be-named-later, take over the shitty country themselves, whatever.

After all, if things go to Hell on the Korean peninsula, how long before the Japanese decide they need to rearm - complete with nukes? The Chinese don't need THAT kind of headache, or the problem of a war breaking out on their border with the US involved.

We have a defense agreement with the South Koreans - honor that and to hell with dealing with the North Korean government.

This has the added benefit of playing to Obama's natural laziness.

Occupation of the Rhineland

Historians writing without benefit of access to the French archives (which were not opened until the mid-1970s) such as William L. Shirer in his books The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (1960) and The Collapse of the Third Republic (1969) have claimed that France, although possessing at this time superior armed forces compared to Germany, including after a possible mobilization 100 infantry divisions, was psychologically unprepared to use force against Germany.[26]

William বলেছেন...

All my life I half expected to die in a nuclear conflagration. I was somewhat surprised when it didn't come to pass. History is full of leaders much wiser than the North Koreans who led their people off the cliff....It's not in the rational self interest of North Korea to start a nuclear war. That and a fallout shelter will get you on the bus.

LilKim. Is rattling his nukes because his conventional military forces are in such bad shape. Even the lower echelons of the military are on short rations. It is believed that only half of the hardware that is massed against SKorea is operational.

Leland বলেছেন...

Just checking to see if you're okay with our current policy on drone attacks.

Of what are you referring when mentioning this policy?

When ed refers to "kill him"; I'm fairly certain he meant Kim Jong-un. If North Korea unilaterally declares open war with us, which is de jure, what they are doing by nullifying the armistice; then history suggests we use whatever force necessary to protect us. I think killing Jong-un with a drone is a far better idea than an exchange of nuclear weapons. Then again, I'm fine with sending Obama over there to talk basketball. I'd say send John Kerry first, but that white man can't jump.

Michelle Dulak Thomson বলেছেন...

NK's missile tests have mostly been highly conspicuous failures, but Seoul is close enough that I bet they could nuke it if they tried. And given that they've renounced the armistice, they just might be insane enough to do that. The question is what we would do in response, and what China would.

Somehow the idea of the top brain working on this question being John Kerry's is not reassuring.

Nathan Alexander বলেছেন...

China is more scared of a few million Nork refugees coming across their border than a few US nukes.

NE China is already in bad economic shape (China's "rust belt"). Refugees could possibly collapse their entire economy, which would mean regime change via violent overthrow.

Nuking China's NE would inspire nationalistic fervor and eliminate the economic drag.

And the US isn't going to nuke China by accident, anyway.

Lydia বলেছেন...

China has a history we'd do well to remember. Between 1958 to 1962, for instance, at least 45 million people were worked, starved, or beaten to death, as part of Mao's Great Leap Forward.

"State retribution for tiny thefts, such as stealing a potato, even by a child, would include being tied up and thrown into a pond; parents were forced to bury their children alive or were doused in excrement and urine, others were set alight, or had a nose or ear cut off. One record shows how a man was branded with hot metal. People were forced to work naked in the middle of winter; 80 per cent of all the villagers in one region of a quarter of a million Chinese were banned from the official canteen because they were too old or ill to be effective workers, so were deliberately starved to death."

And yet Mao is still revered in China.

sakredkow বলেছেন...

@Leland We are of one mind. But I thought the previous poster meant "Kill him - now".

sakredkow বলেছেন...

Which is probably next to impossible anyway.

Revenant বলেছেন...

Then also tell the Chinese (who are already worrying openly about this possibility) that once the nukes start flying no telling how many might "accidently" end up on their side of the border while we're at it.

That may be the most retarded Korea-related suggestion I've ever heard.

Darrell বলেছেন...

North Korea is angling to become a dependent of the US and Europe--tht is all. They should have tried this bullshit when we actually had money in our pocket.

Pettifogger বলেছেন...

Kim is essentially a spoiled 5-year-old who isn't getting his way, so he's holding his breath and stomping his feet. I would be inclined to ignore him, except he is a spoiled 5-year-old with nuclear weapons.

What I am unsure of is whether the leadership of the Nork military knows Kim is nuts or whether they too are delusional enough to think North Korea could survive an all-out war.

virgil xenophon বলেছেন...

@Revenant/

I don't think you understand the psychology of totalitarian leaderships. The leadership cadres of the old SU didn't care how many hundreds of millions of "Soviet" "citizens" were killed in, say, the 'stans in a nuclear war, all they REALLY cared about is that THEY themselves survived a nuclear attack. It's only when we made it crystal-clear to them that were were targeting the leadership bunkers first and foremost with muy warheads that they came around in SALT talks, etc. Same goes for the leadership cadres in China and N. Korea. If they think THEY, themselves, might not survive a nuclear exchange that changes their outlook immeasurably..

Paul বলেছেন...

Bomb bomb bomb... Bomb Iran... I mean North Korea but hey.. might as well bomb Iran while you are at it.

Kelly বলেছেন...

Frankly, it isn't in South Korea or China's best interest to have a free North Korea. Germany had a hard enough time absorbing East Germany's fourteen million and they were literate at least.

Can you imagine what it would take to integrate twenty four million brainwashed, backwards people who have little to no education? The cost alone would be staggering. All they can do is contain them, but I believe China has a tiger by its tail at this point, I really think they've lost any control they may have had over the North.

virgil xenophon বলেছেন...

Revenant বলেছেন...

I don't think you understand the psychology of totalitarian leaderships.

Let me explain to you exactly what happens the first time we threaten to nuke China for not doing what we want.

1. They tell us that, in accordance with standard MAD doctrine, they will respond to a nuclear attack with their full arsenal.

2. They tell the entire world that we just threatened to nuke them if they didn't help with North Korea. There goes our chance to use the "oops!" excuse, not that anyone would have believed it.

So we end up with egg on our face for nothing. Nice going, dumbass.

Nichevo বলেছেন...

Ed,

Assassinate KJU +1. Ultraclean or wet. And tell the next guy he's next if there's trouble. Ideally a US or ROK mole pulls the trigger and gets the job.

And/Or...Recap JFK doctrine: an attack by DPRK on anyone in the (...defense umbrella of our choice...) will be regarded as an attack on the USA by the PRC. Nothing sneaky or oops about it. Their best hope if that happens is let a good kind man be in office as POTUS, maybe he'll just seize all your bonds as tribute after you send us the severed heads of your leadership. That or, flied lice you plicks.

And tell the Chinese their dicks ain't big enough to fuck with us. They threaten LA? Dude, PCH runs north and south. It's all desert, they only have 20 missiles that can even reach LA (their subs are mouthwatering targets), we DO have at least a little missile defense working, and hey, worse comes to worst, good for NY TV and film.

Whereas, while we can of course end all life in China, just holding Beijing at risk is always the answer to China. One MIRV on the Palace and China the nation is over, devolves into a rabble of statelets. China will always give up the ass to protect the Beijing. No risk in the portfolio. (A warning shot would be Three Gorges Dam. No nukes required.)

So, no problems with the Chinese, no problems with the Norks. Let A fix B. We'll buffer disruptions with food aid if need be, lots of it, but not so senselessly managed.
