This is the strangest sequence of events that I've ever seen.

Last night I mentioned a skater acquaintance died while another friend was visiting his new home.

At his own home in Arizona, his own houseguest died the next day. The two men who died knew each other through the visiting person. Both deaths followed immediately a move from one house to another that is not so far nor so jolting a move. It just happened that way. The second person did have problems, and died of seizure while mowing the yard. I think he was about 40 years old, maybe both of them around that age.

Anyway, I'd prefer not to have dinner with that friend as planned, these things run in threes as they say, just kidding, he does have an air of bad luck about him right now, and he is the oldest person I know.

Well we're still getting our dose of snow in the Great White North.

Nonetheless, hope everyone had a wonderful day.

I'll believe it when I see some 19 year old girls running naked down the street.

Then again, there's always something to brighten the day.

People with mental illness account for 40% of all cigarettes smoked.

Hmmm....

When I was in junior high, kids smoked because they wanted to be kewl. And know we find that they were self-medicating.

Me?? I waited until high school, and then we had reefers!! No cigarettes for me!

edutcher, that link looked interesting, so I checked it out, but they don't give the sample size or what exactly they counted as "mental illness". So I linked further to the original press release, which says (in a footnote):

"Source: 2009 to 2011 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health (NSDUHs). NSDUH is an annual survey sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental
Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The survey collects data by administering questionnaires to a representative sample of the population through
face-to-face interviews at their places of residence."

As to what constitutes their categories:

"The 2009 to 2011 National Surveys
on Drug Use and Health (NSDUHs) define any mental illness (AMI) as any diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional
disorder other than a substance use disorder. The NSDUHs define substance use disorder (SUD) as dependence on or abuse of
alcohol or illicit drugs."

So, we get a "representative sample" of unknown number, including people who have not necessarily been diagnosed, but have what who-knows-who considers a "diagnosable" "disorder" that covers not just mental, but also behavioral and emotional "symptoms".

Which sounds like just about everybody to me.

Can I apply for SSI now? :)

Don't blame me.

I found it in the Althouse sidebar.

Five below zero this morning, but no wind. It just doesn't seem to want to warm up.

Watched Me and You and Everyone We Know last night because of that "favorite person" short.

Enjoyed watching it, very much.

A little icky with the youngster sexualization thing but I was sufficiently distracted and I don't take offense the way I used to.

About halfway through the movie I turned to my wife and said, "You know what? I think we've seen this before."

She said, "You're right. I was just thinking the same thing."

They're not exactly necked but they are pretty close. The girls sunbathing on the Clemson quad are a pretty sight. Green grass, blue sky, pretty girls, it makes a man glad to have eyes.
