Near this spot are deposited the remains of one who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the Virtues of Man, without his Vices. This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery if inscribed over human ashes is but a just tribute to the Memory of Boatswain, a Dog.
Inscription on the Monument of a Newfoundland Dog by Lord Byron
How did they learn the intentions of the dog? Maybe IT wanted to keep warm.
God gave the dog fur, and you a heart three sizes too small. I doubt the dog would cuddle up with that 3 year old heat sponge if it wanted to keep itself warm.
It's a heart-warming story to those of us who have experienced the protective nature of family pets.
My favorite part was where the dog unzipped his fur coat and whipped it off and draped it over the girl who quickly fell asleep secure in the knowledge she was protected by an alert and vigilant k-nine guard right there on duty throughout the darkness and the cold. She named the dog Kay.
A few years ago I went backpacking and camped out alone deep in the wilderness with only my dog at the time (a Basenji named Calvin). We were in bear country. He was a great dog, but at night when I was scared to death a bear was gonna chew off my nuts, he squeezed himself all the way to the bottom of my sleeping bag and stayed there all night. I laid awake most of the time holding my 9mm handgun and imagining the worst with every damned noise. I knew I was on my own. Bears scare the shit out of me - the absolute worst animal to meet in the woods. I hear they are quite uncivilized, and very rude. I hoped that my dog, being related to wolves, would translate for me and explain that I was not a threat, nor very tasty. He was a disappointment, and I asked him about it the next morning, and he just relied: "Dude, I thought you were the alpha."
I lived a year on the Canadian border in Ray, Minnesota when I was kid. I remember fifty below temps. Our two pets were an unremarkable cat and a dog we always said was part wolf due to his size and crazily thick fur but was probably just a husky mix. The cat and dog did not get along, but their fights were infrequent given that the dog mainly stayed outside and the cat mainly in.
One very cold weekend, we kids decided to put the cat outside in the snow to see what would happen. The cat started walking very stiffly and began shaking all over, but what surprised us was the action of the dog who happened to be in the yard. He ran over to the cat and dropped to the ground with his belly fur a few inches from the cat. The cat climbed up in the dogs fur and curled into a ball. Sensing this was a serious situation, we took the cat right back into the house. We didn't tell our mom, and the cat and the dog resumed fighting the next day.
How do we know, from the linked report at least, that the girl didn't follow the dog (for all those kilometers)? It's not clear who led whom astray.

Full disclosure: Current dog-lover and someone who's lived with and nurtured dogs for a couple of decades now, but also who had to overcome a deep fear of dogs, having had been badly mauled by one as a toddler and, as a consequence, also underwent a couple-so plastic surgeries, in addition to the initial stitching-up, before school-age. I love them, but don't overly romanticize them--and nor do I automatically abandon obvious questions when it comes to articles about them.

A friend of mine who lived on a small farm in Pennsylvania once told me he decided to sleep out in the pasture one night and when woke up the next morning there was a young bull sleeping next to him on one side and a dog on the other. I suspect neither animal was cold--they just liked company. I guess he's lucky there wasn't a bullfrog on his chest.
It's a great story. Back when I had cattle and had to go to the barn every morning to feed them hay during the winter, the cats that lived in the barn would be all curled up in a big ball sleeping. That dog didn't think "hey, I'll save the little girl", it simply was trying to keep warm itself. My 2¢.

Yes. The first face transplant was a woman whose dog ate her face off when she was lying unconscious in her home. Not exactly Lassie behavior.
President Claims Republicans Threaten Dogs, Little Girls
CLEVELAND(AP): Pres. Obama appeared at a rally in Cleveland today to push his economic recovery plan. Surrounded on stage by a group of little-girl-rescue dogs, the President warned that thousands of such dogs would be furloughed and abandoned at shelters if congressional Republicans allowed the sequester deadline to pass without taking action.

The goofy husky dog will lay next to you whenever you lie down on the floor. Annoying if your trying to do sit ups. Delightful when it's cold in the house.
Our two Boston Terriers usually sleep together or sleep with us. I usually have a nap every afternoon with them in my lap. One of them has started having seizures, which is very disturbing. We are their pack. They depend on us.

Good thing they weren't in Colorado, the dog would've been shot by police.
Looks like something just replaced diamonds.

How can a grown-ass man who squeals with delight at a story like this be all bad?
He can't be.

It wasn't planned by the government.
How can phx understand??
Were I to ultra-interpret without spell checking, what I would do is thus:
Owe n s Corn ing
and then wait
She was one of the 47% takers.
How could madAsHell understand?
phx - behold the liberal brain. Sad, really.
What a wonderful outcome. Good doggy.
Dogs are awesome. Nuff said.
Guess: would that be subzero F or subzero C?
And how did a 3 year old end up in a marsh several kilometres away?
And who writes "kilometre"?
I'm not persuaded yet, nor impressed.
And who writes "kilometre"?
Anyone in the UK. You did see where the liked article originated, right?
Michelle Obama will be flying to Poland tomorrow to give a medal to the dog during a live drop in on The View. Can't wait.

Rick67 beat me to it.
In other news: "Florida man swallowed by earth for sins we can only imagine."

Dogs rock. Good dog!
"I love dogs more than people."
Oh, that's just disgusting. Don't you dare start with any dog hog stories.
Dogs are by nature social creatures. They will protect and provide, and also expect to be protected and provided for.
How can a site proclaiming their Buckleyesqueness also not hire graphic artists to improve the "ALL CATALOGS" Catholic dogma?

Writ Small knows how amazing a dog can be. He's seen it with his own eyes.

Dogs sleep with their pack, partly for warmth and partly to be able to tell when somebody moves.
My dog sleeps leaning on me.
Since dogs run about 100.5 degrees F, it's pretty toasty.
There's seldom a freshly gutted tauntaun around when you need one.

@Coketown, re: 8:08pm, well said.
@Writ Small, great story.
You will never, ever hear of a story like this involving a cat. They would be all like, "Hey, where you goin? Oh, that's too far for me. Okay bye."
