The idea was a publicity stunt, to replace on piece with another: "And because it asked the Internet, it wound up with a cat."
And they got rid of the iron! I always chose the iron. I liked its stability. It didn't fall over like the damned shoe.

Shouldn't Monopoly be upgraded to include more squares for government subsidies and cronyism?
I usually chose the iron, too. It was subtle and delicate -- just the way I played Monopoly, always crushing my older sisters.

Doesn't the choice of a cat reflect the "Julie-fication" of America?
Monopoly should allow unlimited debt financing like our nation's profligate spending.
Enjoy the decline!
They need to come out with an Occupy version of the game. Players set up tent cities outside of the hotels, railroads and such to shut the town down. Property owners can bride the squatters to leave. And maybe they can engage the squatters like Pinkertons--but with rolls of the dice deciding losses.
As long as they keep the battleship so I can blow those squatters away, Darrell..
"Out, out, brief flat iron!
Life's but a vanishing wrinkle, a poor appliance
That steams and presses his hour upon the board
And then is heard no more."
I'm a top-hat man.
I'm a top-hat man.
I voted for the helicopter so that I could visit all my properties.
Cat, pfeh, they can have my iron when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers. I still have my legacy MB board, from back when Monopoly Money was worth something.
(For whatever reason, the Internet was not offered Gotye or a bacon cupcake.)
Bacon cupcake I understand . . . but Gotye? Do they mean goatse?
Always loved the battleship, the better to enforce gunboat imperialism.
The stage of monopoly capitalism (imperialism)
The essential feature of imperialism is manipulation of the uneven development of labour productivity in different sectors of the world capitalist economy in order to extort monopoly superprofits.
My wife lost her iron years ago,
But my mother in law still knows how to use one in an emergency
Considering how many people don't seem to remember what an iron is for I'm not that surprised.
The cat however? I don't get that at all. The wedding ring would have been the better choice.
I haven't played Monopoly in years, but I always took the roadster, if somebody else didn't get it first. That was the only token that seemed logical to me -- how would you get around Atlantic City in a hat? As a kid, I didn't do abstract thinking very well.
Does anyone remember playing the game of Life? That actually made sense, starting with a car and only yourself, but adding as you went along.
It symbolizes the liberation of women.
Moving away from the domestic drudgery of the Feminine Mystique desperate housewife, symbolized by the iron...
...to shtrong, liberated, independent women who don't have to sign up for that domestic drudgery, symbolized by the cat.
Lonely feminists and their cats.
The wedding ring would have been the better choice.
Why? Weddings and marriage are going out of style faster than two parent homes.
...
The game should be updated thusly: Every property is for sale. In fact, every player must buy any unowned property, and at least every other owned property they land on. If the property is already owned it will be flipped at a ten percent mark-up over the previous sale price. Owned properties can be mortgaged as usual. When a player can't afford to buy a new property, the person owning the the property to be bought is eliminated for having bought at the wrong end of the cycle.
Will they come for the irons?

My kids like that game. the first time they played it was at their cousins, and the cousins had the modern version. The modern version uses a card swipe system that avoids anyone having to do math. We don't have that version.
I hate when they change classic stuff like this, but then I'm still irritated that they changed the light brown M&M to blue.
In the game Clue, wasn't the lead pipe originally made out of lead?
I didn't care much for the iron, the damn cord was always knocking stuff over.
What will I hit my wife with when she refuses to do my tiny laundry?
I always chose the race car. Please tell me they still have it!
On my iPad version of Monopoly I always chose the iron as one of my virtual opponents. I hated the pieces which "bounced" across the board, and favored the smoother traveling pieces, as the bouncing got annoying real quick.
To be honest, I'm more annoyed at the move towards a new currency symbol a capital "M" with two horizontal lines through it, denoting "Monopoly Money"
I still prefer the classic dollar sign. I understand the changing it to pounds, euro, yen, or whatever the local currency is for foreign editions, but that "M" symbol is just annoying.
They still have the race car. (My favorite)
In the iPad version they also introduced a Prius token. (Product placement?)

First you start off with $2,000 and a car...
I got a car?
You may go faaaar...
Hellz yeah I remember.
Dog is best. Shoe was acceptable. Car was good, too.
A pussy. Figures.
It's all about the ladyparts.
