Irrelevant benefits to Obama's losing the election, #1.

I write "#1" with confidence, as if I know I'll have additional reasons and this post is the first in a series.

"Irrelevant," because these will not be reasons that ought to have any influence on whether you should vote for Obama or not. (If you want to know what I'm doing and why, that post was yesterday.)

So here's the reason: It will be interesting to see what Obama does with himself if he is suddenly plunged into the circumstance of not being President. If Romney loses, no one will watch him, seeing what he does. He'll melt back into the general population. He's 65 years old. His accomplishments are accomplished. And if he never makes it to the presidency, he'll be a former candidate, not a former President. He doesn't even go back to an existing public office.

When's the last time a major party candidate lost without having a political position to which he could return? Not McCain. Not Kerry. They went back to the Senate. Oh, no! It was Al Gore! He found things to do to interest, entertain, and torment us. He would not be ignored. But he was a young man — young for a presidential candidate — only 52. It's possible that Romney will undertake some grandiose project, but it's nearly impossible to picture him going Gore on us. It's safe to predict that if Romney loses, he'll gracefully concede, wish us all well, and retire into private life, within which he'll be a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, doing manifold good works that will receive no publicity.

But Obama! He's only 51. He was too green to have become President when he did, and he stumbled and lost — if he loses. He had so much promise that he hit the top early, and now all that ability, brought to bear too soon, goes forward into prime years... for what?! That's what's so interesting. We'll get to see what. We only get to see what's down that path if he loses: an irrelevant benefit to Obama's losing the election.

He'll become another Jimmy Carter. A constant scold and annoyance who will be used by the Islamists to attack our policies and make themselves feel good. Unless Romney fails, and I doubt that, and the election is close, I also doubt that, he will not run for office again.

He is too narcissistic to do what John Quincy Adams did and enter the Senate or House and do useful work for the country.

This is weird, but I knew this on Sunday. I actually saw all events this week through my minds-eye.

Mitt Romney probably won't run for office again, though there's always the possibility of a cabinet appointment or something in 2016. His father remained active with private charities until he died at 88, so I doubt he'll disappear completely.

When Obama steps down in January I expect he'll go golfing a lot, fly all over the world apologizing for the US, and work very closely with shady organizations run by dangerous men with dubious plans for our future. So, really, from his perspective it'll be like he never left office.

Mumpsimus বলেছেন...

Michael বলেছেন...

The thing is, Obama never really has been President. The President should lead the whole country and stand up to his own people now and then. He or she should instill some kind of vision of what the country is and where it should go. Obama sub-contracted policy out to Reid and Pelosi, thought giving some accommodating speeches amounted to a foreign policy, and generally carried on like your classic academic anti-war leftist. He could be in the very post-modern position of having lost the office without ever having occupied it.

I've been wondering about the same thing. Jimmy Carter pretty quickly established himself as "the best ex-President ever", and then transformed himself, over a period of years, into "the worst-ex-President ever". Obama might follow a similar path.

I'm growing more convinced, though, that he really doesn't care for fame unless it adores him. If he loses, he'll be sneered at. He might just fade away to the wealth of boardrooms and inflated honoraria.

I don't see Obama running again. He would have to have people who believed in him enough to prop him up and I just don't think there are that many remaining.

The Democrat party will want to forget him, they'll pull back to the center after a four year long war within the party. 2016 will see a more moderate candidate, not Hillary, who will have been done in by Benghazi.

Obama will become Carteresque and a thorn in future Presidents side for years to come. He'll rake in speaking fees to keep Michelle in the style to which she has become accustomed. I could see Michelle having a future in politics. Her speech at the democrat convention was very polished and well done.

That is not the issue. JQ Adams was a patriot and, in spite of losing the election, he chose to try to work within the system to do what he thought right.

That is not Obama.

Sorun বলেছেন...

"The guy really needs to get some work experience."

His signature "accomplishment" is Obamacare, and he let Congress do it. It's funny, he was POTUS for four years but still doesn't have any work experience. All he can do is read speeches and collect accolades.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

It was very unfortunate that people did not wait for the first Black American President to also be a qualified man and one who revered and advocated freedom rather than plantation living. If Obama loses we may still get that some day. If he wins, we may never try again, because like I've been saying, he could be much worse and probably will be in a second term. If he loses now, we can just rack it up to the bad timing of when he came in, but after eight years it will be entirely his fault, and frankly I don't want that on the first Black President. Again, the left blows it on the unintended consequences. They always do.

It seems to me that Obama has never actually done any productive work in his entire life. I don't even know many homeless for which that's the case. And no, I don't generally consider politics to be doing productive work. It mostly wastes more resources than it creates, at least in a mature republic. And, writing two autobiographies about such a life is not my idea of productive work either, if he even wrote them.

gadfly বলেছেন...

Althouse is wrong.

But Obama! He's only 51. He was too green to have become President when he did ...

"Green" means immature, which he remains, but he was truly unqualified to rise to the level of president.

Remember Peter's Corollary which says in effect that in time, every post tends to be occupied by someone who is incompetent to carry out his duties? Well, those of us not enamored with the election of our first black president knew (before the election) that Obama was unqualified to be president. What we didn't know was that he was incapable- as a result of his ideology - of ever rising to the challenge of the office.

bagoh20 বলেছেন...

I suppose another irrelevant benefit might be seeing whether famous leftist and Obama supporter Bill Maher was right last night when he told Romney supporters, "Black people know who you are and they will come after you."

Anecdotal, I know. We have as business clients many very wealthy people who live in the coastal urban areas of California and who also have vacation homes in our area. (if you can call a 3000 square foot two story palatial home a vacation place). Generally, this time of year the places are shut down, water drained from the lines, pipes protected, winterized, until we are requested to open up the place for a Holiday get together or for hunting parties.

THIS year, about 1/3 of those clients have decided to open their vacation homes for a week or so beginning the week of November 6th. Coincidence? I don't think so. They are just being prudent and getting somewhere else, safe and serene until the dust settles.

I wouldn't go near the Bay Area or any other 'urban' and 'ethnic' place for any reason whatsoever after the election.

Romney can make an immediate impact because he can repeal on his own what Obama passed on his own - executive orders and directives to agencies. In one day Romney could: 1. resume allowing permits for drilling in the Gulf 2. allow the Keystone pipeline 3. allow oil searches on public land. Hundreds of thousands of potential jobs, at once. More jobs later as Obamacare is repealed. Then, when Romney improves the economy it will affect Obama's prestige. So then what can he do? I did not realise until pointed out above (by Darrell) that Obama cannot run the UN as no citizen of a country which is a permanent member of the Security Council can be Secretary General. He could set up an institute in Russia, his spiritual homeland, and pontificate from there. Also he could finance books denying the realities of the Russian and Chinese famines and proclaiming his own success in ending the the Second Great Depression and so on.

There seems to be something wrong with your priorities

You're saying it's none of our business if a millionaire, who tells us we're immoral if we don't turn over more money to him because he believes we're all bound by the pseudo-Biblical injunction to be our brothers' keeper, leaves his own brother to die in the street.

Barack Obama could help George Obama at literally no cost to himself. I don't mean virtually no cost, as it would be if he parted with a few thousand of his millions of dollars. I mean literally no cost, if he asked one of his plutocrat supporters - Soros, or Jamie Dimon, or somebody who profited from the Solyndra scam, or a Hollywood big shot - to send their pocket change to brother George in Kenya.

Barack Obama could lift his own brother from destitution to comfort by speaking a sentence, and he won't do it.

Let's hope that you don't have a personal tragedy in your family that becomes cause for all the world to look and pass judgment on without any real understanding whatsoever.

In such an instance you and I would understand each other perfectly.

Either way, Obama's gonna get a dog and name it Revenge.

And it will be served cold.

If he loses, and that is still slightly under 50-50 odds IMO....I think both Democrats and Republicans will want to put a stake in Urkel the Narcissist. A lot of Dems are not happy with the Pelosi-Obama Team.

Expect Benghazi to be investigated if he loses, with Dems "shocked!" at the revelations and "deeply disappointed the media never uncovered the deceptions and screwups before the Hearings started".
Obama's transcripts to magically appear and Gov. Cuomo among others, to be "surprised" that someone with his poor record and heavy socialist course load got into Harvard Law.
Stories about his U of Chicago sinecures for himself and Michelle basically doing little but occasionally show up - were arraigned by 3 prominant and wealthy progressive Jewish Families that control the U of Chicago Board. (The billionaire Crown, Klutznik, and Pritzker Families)

Insider stories by Clintonistas will come....how Obama only cared about the trappings of office and had little energy for the substance..aside from campaigning or giving speeches. Many Dem insiders consider him unworthy for office, an unchecked ego, far less intelligent than he thinks himself as being.
They will look to the Democrat future and want to put a stake in him as well, but carefully, being concerned about the black voters that see him as bigger than MLK.

He will go teach, like Dukakis, and gather around him a small coterie of adoring nearly viciously passionate young folks, a cross between a Praetorian Guard and rock-star fan club, with a five-year turnover cycle.

Not perhaps in Chicago. In the end, I think Obama was and still is too delicate for Chicago politics and Chicago itself. Not because he lacks the essential amorality, but because he lacks the fire in the belly, the grit. I see Boston or New York City as more likely, with frequent visits to LA to bask in the glam lifestyles of his Tavis Smiley friends and groupies.

An interesting question is what happens to Michelle. She's always struck me as the harder of the two, and perhaps even the more ambitious.

If Obama loses, after the 2013 Congressional Benghazi hearings, we'll hear Obama swear that he will search every golf course in America until he finds the real killers.

Just like O.J.

"A line of Bomber jackets"

I've been harboring a vision of Barry and Michelle building a business of a hip-hop clothing line called Wear On Women. Bomber jackets in pink would be a nice addition to peddling mom-jeans to gangstas.

Benefit: I will not miss Michelle's weird belts one little bit.

Obama will continue to be Carter on steroids and will inject his unwelcome and unwise "advice" into every national or geopolitical issue, doing everything he can to undermine Romney.

Anything else he does will be irrelevant. That's all that will matter.

OK. Let's hope you don't get a blister from wearing the wrong sized shoes.

I think we understand each other well enough already: I'm disgusted by the moral preening of a rich selfish bastard, and you're desperate to talk about something else.

The irrelevant benefit if Obama WINS, is I will get the spend the rest of my life saying, "I told you so".

Chuck, well, I can't say that it surprises me to see an Obama voter all primed up in lip-smacking anticipation of heaving out the "I told you sos..."

If Obama loses I'll satisfy myself with the realization that the nation is back in the hands of the adults.

I'm not worried about whatever Harry Reid has to say. Expect Joe Manchin to become Romney's new best friend.

Uh. I just had a nasty thought. Jerry Brown came back from the dead to become governor in CA again. Somehow these guys simply don't get it. When the till is empty, they continue to want to spend more on massive programs. Obama Care/Energy at the federal level, and Brown it's stupid green energy, more taxes, and a choo choo train for $100B.

Stephen Monteith বলেছেন...

I'm surprised, guys. Couldn't you tell that "all his abilities" was spoken in sarcasm? Even irony?

As for what the president will do if/when he loses, I have a string of temporary solutions to his personal job crisis (in some order):

- Speaking circuit; not just lectures, but interviews around the world, augmented by a brief resurgence of his career as an autobiographer;

- Board member for various organizations, possibly even a chairmanship; these would last a bit longer, since he wouldn't have any real responsibilities, but they wouldn't count as "work", either, so eventually even he would feel compelled to "do" something;

- Public face of various causes, again taking him around the world to speak up in defense of the defenseless, possibly in Africa; the southern part of the continent, though, far away from anything that might remind others of his presidency; he may even net himself another Nobel Prize;

- DNC Chairman; every couple of years, he'd be trotted out to campaign for various candidates, anyway (never for himself, though, since he'd never run for anything again), so why not just make him the official Divider-in-Chief instead of the de facto one?

- Professor, either at Harvard or one of his other alma maters; once he has tenure, though, he leaves that, too;

- Finally, he's a professional retiree, writing one or two more memoirs, one based on his post-presidency career and the other about the general arc his life has taken, and popping up every now and then on television in ... some capacity;
