There's always next year.

"The Brewers finally are eliminated from the race for the second wild-card berth in the National League, and they go out with a whimper, getting routed by the worst team in the majors."

Meadhouse is now free to devote full allegiance to the Reds.

Nice gesture by Roenicke to give the Brewers offense the day off once again.

That ought to eliminate Braun from very many 1st-place MVP votes, too.

Tigers,meanwhile, are doing great!

Prince says "hello".

Dear Meade,

"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you fall in love with a team in defeat. Losing after great striving is the story of man, who was born to sorrow, whose sweetest songs tell of saddest thoughts and who, if he is a hero, does nothing in life as becomingly as leaving it."
- Roger Kahn The Boys of Summer

I just love that quote.

Next year the Astros won't even be in the National League. Milwaukee is in trouble.

They should have done some better striving earlier in the season, but this last part, if not the last day, has been grand.

Should have been "Dear Meadehouse"

How are the SF Giants doing? Is Matt Williams having another good year?

I have a feeling this outcome sits better with the Mead- part than the
-house part.

Axeford and KRod.

Lame.

People who change allegiance based on team performance suck. No team deserves such poor fans.

Ann Althouse said...

Meade is a long-time Reds fan. He lived in Cincinnati for many years. We also follow the local team. It's dicey when they play each other.

Ann Althouse said...

And it's not based on performance. It's based on the end of the season and one team not going through.

!!! And, Homer Bailey just through a no hitter. The Reds are rolling.

threw, that is.

If fans don't change allegiance when their teams don't perform, those teams won't get better! You want fan loyalty regardless of performance watch the NFL! (since they split the revenue package equally can we call the NFL....Communist?)

But some can catch a break when union refs go on strike...

There's that, at least, to keep some chugging along.

"Not going through" is a result of poor performance. If the Brewers had performed well, you'd be rooting for them. Since they didn't perform well, you are now changing allegiance.

In any case, if Meade is a long-time Reds fan, he has no business rooting for the Brewers. The Reds and the Brewers aren't just in the same league; they're in the same division.

Being a fan of a team isn't like rooting for someone on American Idol. When your team is eliminated, you don't scramble to find a new favorite team that's still in the competition.

OOPS...

If my sarcasm dripped into your crying towels, sports' fans.

Frankly, I LOVE sports' strikes.

If you're honest, they seem to matter more than teacher strikes.

What is it about "Monday through Friday" that has spawned weekend demon sports' fanatics?

Took my boys to see the Twins-Tigers yesterday. First game for two of them. They got to see Doumit's Grand Slam and watch Prince take his first pitch out. Plus Cabrera hit one out to grt back in line for the Triple Crown.

Most of which my boys did not care about. It was awesome.

The Brewers comeback was a good story. However, it showed you can only win in baseball if you're loose. The pressure was off, they thought they were out of it in August, and they got on a roll. The great Ted Williams went into the last day of the season on the brink of hitting .400. A veteran ump dusted off the plate as Williams strolled for his first at bat. The ump could see Williams was tight. As he swept the plate he said to Williams, "If a guy is going to hit .400, he's got to be loose." Williams got 4 hits and thanked the ump by telling this story till he died.

Patrick, I was a freshman in high school in New England when Yaz last won the Triple Crown in 1967. Yaz said last week what would help Cabrera was being in a pennant race. That's what helped Yaz. That, and having Prince batting behind him!

"Have the Brewers ever been good?"

Well, let's see - they were pretty good in 2011, when they were defeated by the team that went on to win the WS. Whereas a certain Boston team famously melted down before reaching the playoffs.

Duh.

The Brew Crew would have been good this year if their formerly great bullpen hadn't blown so many saves this year. (Although the bullpen was not the problem on Sunday.) When I think of the number of games shot to hell in the 8th and
9th innings this season, I wince.

I'm just sad that baseball season is nearly at an end. Being at a ballpark on a beautiful day with a beer in one hand and a brat in the other, holding my breath waiting for the next pitch - I love those moments.

I like football, but baseball is the most beautiful and suspenseful game in the world.

The Brewers were good when the manager was a Bambi and the best player was a stout Thomas.

That was many years ago.

Zemo, again, the Brewer's 2011 season wasn't chopped liver.

And, as much as I liked Gorman, it's Yount and Molitor who ended up in Cooperstown.
