Madonna "was being ironic on stage" when she said we have "a Black Muslim in the White House."

“Yes, I know Obama is not a Muslim — though I know that plenty of people in this country think he is. And what if he were? The point I was making is that a good man is a good man, no matter who he prays to. I don’t care what religion Obama is — nor should anyone else in America.”

Should on-stage performers dumb it down for the people who aren't sophisticated enough to process humor?

I'm sure it's all very amusing for Madonna, who gets big publicity and looks "edgy" again. People call her stupid, and then she one-ups them and can seem — certainly to herself — to be quite smart. (Did you hear she has an IQ of 140? Same as Hillary Clinton. And Shakira.)

Others wielding humor have more to worry about. Like Romney with his "trees are just the right height" and, more recently, about those airplane windows that "don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that." People aren't going to get it if they don't want to get it, if they're looking for material to use to say you're an idiot.

And Romney can't make the Madonna move and call his antagonists dumb. Mitt Romney — who, like Madonna, was born in Michigan, where the trees are just the right height — has an estimated IQ  in the range of 130 to 139, which is smart enough to choose whether to dumb it down in self-defense.

ADDED: Look at how Paul Ryan's antagonists are trying to hurt him by pretending not to get his sense of humor. Are they stupid or pretending to be stupid? Tobin Harshaw writes:
There is no underestimating the literal-mindedness of the American reader: Years ago when I worked at the Times we published a satirical op-ed column by Steve Martin riffing on the idea that a NASA Mars probe had discovered millions of kittens on the Red Planet. Shortly thereafter, a subscriber sent a terse letter to the editor asking us to "inform your science correspondent" that the lack of oxygen on Mars made kitten infestation highly unlikely.
Wait. Why is Harshaw assuming the letter-writer wasn't doing humor?

AND: Wait. Ryan never even made those "Stench" remarks. A Politico writer made them up and intended it as satire.  I thought they were good enough jokes to be believable as the casual humor of a relatively young man, and I would have appreciated them as such. Harshaw is attacking Ryan's antagonists as so hostile that they didn't pick up that it was humor. I didn't pick up that it was humor, and I was defending Ryan. That's all very odd.

ALSO: I like the way Drudge is putting it: "MEDIA 'SATIRE' HIT PIECE ON PAUL RYAN BACKFIRES.../O'Donnell, Krugman 'fooled'..." Drudge is, I think, insinuating that Politico's Roger Simon intended to be misunderstood, for the Ryan quotes to be believed, and then to reveal that it was satire after the damage was done.

MORE: Fake quotes live on as real. Remember Sarah Palin's most famous quote: "I can see Russia from my house."

Nothing against Tarantino, at all. Love the guy's movies.
I'm just saying: Consider the possibility that this estimated IQ is bullshit. Also, throughout the 2008 campaign there were "measure your IQ" ads all over the internet claiming that Obama had an IQ of 145. Now his "estimated" IQ is down to 120-130 even though there is no basis (grades, scores) for this estimate.

Madonna has become the Immaterial Girl. Her album is not selling, her concerts are boring. The only reason she gets publicity is because people assume her pronouncements are supposed to somehow make sense and proceed to waste their time trying to figure it out.

There are aspects of the IQ test that if you "grok" you can seem more intelligent than you are. I blow away the geometry part of the test, but then I have always loved geometry. Reading books about it in gradeschool...that's why I am such a good carpenter. One of the best, if I may say so. Also loved science so that boosted my score, and reading, too. But I absolutely suck on the humanities, and writing portion.

My wife, who I've tested a few times because I didn't believe her at first, scores over 180. She cheats in that she has almost an eiditic memory. Show her something once, and she generally knows it forever. That's why her stroke pisses her off so much...you can see she knows what she wants to say, she just can't remember the words anymore(nouns specifically).

All that, and she's a stay at home mom.

Heck, the only reason I can keep up with her is I'm sneaky smart, and have a wider range of experience.

And Bagoh, the humbleness is nice, but everyone can tell you're a sharp cookie. Your arguments, and comments are always spot on and clever.

I don’t know how anyone could have taken this as true and not satire, given how over the top the supposed Ryan quotes were. However, people should have picked up on the article being satire when they reached the long discussion on PowerPoint, PETA, euthanizing cattle, restricting PP to conference rooms since you can lock the doors from outside, and so on.

I really think this was meant for the loony (and not so loony) left to pick up on and run with it as being true. It doesn’t matter if Politico comes out with a big banner on their website saying “SATIRE” in big flashing letters, this is now out there, and will be endlessly repeated as being fact. Looking at some of the sites and comments the Bloomberg post links to, the loony left knows it had to be true, because it “fits the narrative”. One MSNBC blogger gave an update on the possibility of it being satire, but said it had to be true, since “the column is filled with details and anecdotes that are, in fact, accurate”.

I guess I need to stop being amazed when I see people believing something as true, just because it shows up on the internet.

Considering that his father was a Muslim, and (as I understand it) if you are born to a Muslim father, Muslims consider that you are a Muslim, I bet easily over half the Muslims in the Middle East think Obama is a Muslim.
Of course, in our Western tradition you are whatever religion you decide you are, so if Obama says he's Christian, then according to our traditions, that's what he is. But I find it a little amusing that liberals like Maher hold up the fact that some Americans think Obama is a Muslim as some self-evident proof of idiocy, when actually, technically, and based on his being adopted by and raised for part of his childhood by an Indonesian Muslim, it is not a ridiculous belief.

Frank Zappa supposedly had an IQ of 160+ ...

Well i turned around and i said "ho, ho"
And the northern lights commenced to glow
And she said, with a tear in her eye
"watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow"
"watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow"

Eh, they might be incredibly smart. But no matter how smart you are, being surrounded by a bunch of people constantly telling you how great you are is enough to make even the greatest genius dumb -- that kind of feedback just makes you lazy.

Re: Tyrone Slothrop:

Fair enough. I don't think there are actually that many people (other than Mensa, maybe?) who think IQ is the only thing that matters. IQ (or g) is just the most important thing for highly g-loaded tasks.

"I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn’t study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people." - falsely attributed to Dan Quayle.

It was really a Dan Quayle joke told by Rep. Claudine Schneider (R-RI).

"Romney saying the "trees are just the right height" was a joke?"

It was a joke. Out west there are a lot of scrub trees/bushes.

Of course the Usurper is a Muslim. He was born of a Muslim, British subject father, and has recited the shahada. If he would have renounced Islam, he would be marked for death as an apostate, rather than lauded in the Muslim world when he spoke in Cairo. He is a practitioner of Taquiya (lying to advance Islam), and has said he will stand with the Muslims. What else would he be?

I got an IQ of 140. Do at least one stupid thing a day, maybe two.

And I wouldn't trust me with nuclear weapons. No way.
