"I'll be damned, we're Republicans."

NM Gov. Susana Martinez, who'd been a Democrat for many years, like her parents, talked — in her convention speech last night — about a conversation that led to that punchline.

Hagar said...: Most "Hispanic" New Mexicans are Democrats for reasons dating back to Territorial days when Republican (though some of them - like Tom Catron - quite freshly minted) carpetbaggers from the East ran wild out here.
However, there are Republicans too, especially in southern New Mexico where some are descendants of "The California Column" that came here to save New Mexico from the Confederate invasion, and some became Republican in reaction to the ex-Confederates drifting west after the Civil War and roughing up the local population. Family traditions and clan alliances are strong, and some date back to long before any Anglos - let alone republicans - showed up out here.; 8/30/12, 5:43 PM

Latino's vote for Democrats more than Republicans, but there were still a whole lot of "Viva Bush!" bumperstickers here in New Mexico in 2004.

Hispanics make up something like 54% of the population of this state and it's not as solidly Democratic as the Democrats would like to think. Obviously Martinez was elected. She won over another Hispanic lady, IIRC, so the choice wasn't between Hispanic and non-Hispanic.

When it comes right down to it, though, race shouldn't determine political opinions, and race shouldn't be *assumed* to determine political opinions.

When you think about it, "Your name is Ortega. You must vote Democrat," is every bit as racist as "Your name is Ortega. You must eat a lot of beans."

Oh, and for what it's worth (again)... an Hispanic girl in one of my English classes was explaining that her Hispanic instructor in a different English class had docked her grade because she appears too Anglo. Not a doubt in her mind about it.

But please lets assume that Hispanics are a unified group. Group culture, group think, group voting.; 8/30/12, 5:48 PM
