How many is "most" of his films? He only made three: GIANT; EAST OF EDEN; and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.
Often, an artist who seems revolutionary or brilliant in his own time will appear less so (or not at all) in hindsight, either because the social circumstances have changed such that we cannot perceive him in the way his contemporaries did--or we see they were mistaken in their appraisal of the value of his work--or because his influence has so spread into the culture at large through all those who whose work bears echos of the original that what made him unique or iconoclastic in context of his era is so diluted that he seems ordinary or less.

LOL. Who could have possibly predicted..
People who peak at 18 live a sad life.
Dork With Plenty of Cause
Unmistakably James Dean, even in the geek outfit.
That was James Dean in his secret identity, mild-mannered librarian Claude Kant.
OT: Althouse comes in at 28 on a list of 150 conservative web sites

I wonder how many Obama voters could score that high?
I guessed Brad Pitt. Well, there is some similarity.
Well... it's not like the whole "removing the eyeglasses" thing isn't already a trope for damn near every Ugly-Duckling-to-Swan movie out there.
Actors are very good at changing their image.
With skilled makeup and good direction, all things are possible.
For an hour and a half.
I have seen most of James Den's flicks and think he is way overrated. Death made him famous, not acting.

Are you talking about Al Bundy?
Dean (aged 24) didn't have much of a choice, with a steering wheel around his neck.

I've never been too keen on Dean's emoting.
@The Drill Sgt.
If you made a list of "conservative" websites run by Obama voters, Althouse would doubtless be #1.
I've seen Rebel W/O a Cause and Giant..that would be most I believe!

East of Eden is his best performance.
Aw, what a cute little nerd guy. And such a shame. Better he'd stayed a geek and lived than became a icon and died so young.
"Dork With Plenty of Cause"
Outstanding!
"You're tearing me apart!"
"You're tearing me apart!"
Jim Backus was great in this film.
The rest of it is all a little maudlin, and Dean's emoting is a little too much.
Eden and Giant, IMHO, were better films.
The before picture is before James dean attended a tony robbins seminar, and before he read 7 habits for highly effective people.
