Tom Barrett at last night's debate: "No one on my staff has ever been charged with a crime."

He looked really pleased and smug when he said that... but it's just not true.

"no one on my staff has ever been charged with a crime."

It's an understandable mistake.

From all appearances Milwaukee cops don't feel the need to make any formal charges before arresting someone.

You two ought to get a better homeowners policy. I see crime in your personal future if you keep up with this approach in Madison.

That's right.

Ann Althouse: Why must you agitate the people so?

iirc the only audible thing I heard in the debate last night from the crowd was the hugh SIGH from everyone after Barrett said that his office doesn't hire felons (paraphasing). Yet another own goal.

The difference is that Barrett's man suffocating his girlfriend was not a political-related crime. All of Walker's cronies committed political crimes.

The other lie was the second part saying Walker hired felons. None of the people in question were felons when Walker hired them.

Alex said...

But isn't funny that all these people Walker fired suddenly ended up felons? Poor judge of character that Walker.

Only someone loose with the truth would even attempt to make such a claim about a group of people, especially political people.

It basically an automatic lie.

But Barrett's wife sent political emails from gov't computers, just like the John Doe guys are ostensibly accused of.

Whether or not she's on Barrett's "staff" is way too personal a question for me to speculate about.

ANN and New Meadia Meade do it again.

If this was 1959, there be a TV show about you two.

In the meantime, give 'em Hell.

Joseph N. Cantu, a receptionist in Barrett’s mayoral office, was charged in May 2010 with suffocating his ex-girlfriend.

Ground control to Mayor Tom...choke on that!

You and Oop must make a cute couple fellating each other.

Barrett was and is smug during the debate. That worked well for Al Gore, now didn't it. Remember the condescending sighs. That spoke to the choir but independents said "fuck you" after that lame act.

I've never met Oop but I hope to one day. I'm happily married but Oop has a good heart, her head needs some work. You Mr. edutcher, are a sycophant. That puts you way down on the food chain. I have no desire to meet your ilk.

Since we're all concerned about integrity, let's not forget that Barrett personally endorsed Johnny Thomas for Milwaukee comptroller. This was after Thomas was caught accepting bribes during a sting operation. Thomas was later charged with two felonies.

These were Barrett's words regarding Thomas:

“The citizens of Milwaukee need a comptroller they can trust to ensure our finance system is stable and secure. Johnny has the right mix of public and private experience … to be an excellent comptroller for Milwaukee.”

Barrett does actually have an argument: even if Walker's plan works for the best, Walker was an associate of known accused people once upon a time....the infamous Doe brothers.

Edutcher, you really are a joke, you say things to Althouse that should probably embarrass her, some of which you reveal your ridiculous sychophantasmagorical sexual fantasies of seeing her in "red leather", holding dominatrix whips, etc. etc that made me LMAO when I read them.

Keep your disgusting comments to yourself and don't bring me into your online spats with other commenters here.

Nick thanks, about part of your defense of me, lol.

I agree with Nick about the other part. :)

BTW, sychophantasmagorical sexual fantasies?..where did you learn to talk like that?

And it's a good thing Ritmo took all your flirting private.

Just sayin'

Where did I learn to talk like that? Milwaukee, the place I grew up in, dontcha know?

No, I am just secure enough to give her a little praise when she does something that benefits a lot of people.

Funny how I'm not a syncophant when Ann and I disagree on stuff, but Oop and nd can always go back to that other blog and tell each other how cool they are.

PS Any time Ann objects to anything I say about her, she can always let me know here or she has my email.

Did Mr. Barret specify office staff? There are more archaic meanings...

That was the part of the debate I was trying to remember all day - he made that statement & it just kind of hung there in the air - nothing was said by anyone after that. Barrett had a look on his face like he had dropped a loud fart in church while the choir was singing, except he hadn't noticed that the choir had already stopped singing.

The Washington Post reposts a... pretty bad ad that I just think needed correcting.

Pity Walker didn't look at him and simply say:

"Yet.

Oh, rats. I was going to say he could change his statement to "no one on my staff has ever been charged with a murder." Back to the drawing board.
