John Lauber, a soft-spoken new student one year behind Romney, was perpetually teased for his nonconformity and presumed homosexuality. Now he was walking around the all-boys school with bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye, and Romney wasn’t having it.Romney declined an interview, and a spokeswoman said "The stories of fifty years ago seem exaggerated and off base and Governor Romney has no memory of participating in these incidents."
“He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!” an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann, his close friend in the Stevens Hall dorm, according to Friedemann’s recollection....
A few days later, Friedemann entered Stevens Hall off the school’s collegiate quad to find Romney marching out of his own room ahead of a prep school posse shouting about their plan to cut Lauber’s hair. Friedemann followed them to a nearby room where they came upon Lauber, tackled him and pinned him to the ground. As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors.
The incident was recalled similarly by five students, who gave their accounts independently of one another....
Another story:
In an English class, Gary Hummel, who was a closeted gay student at the time, recalled that his efforts to speak out in class were punctuated with Romney shouting, “Atta girl!” In the culture of that time and place, that was not entirely out of the norm. Hummel recalled some teachers using similar language.ADDED: Obama bullied a black girl:
Her name was Coretta, and before my arrival she had been the only black person in our grade. She was plump and dark and didn’t seem to have many friends. From the first day, we avoided each other but watched from a distance, as if direct contact would only remind us more keenly of our isolation."Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance."
Finally, during recess one hot, cloudless day, we found ourselves occupying the same corner of the playground. I don’t remember what we said to each other, but I remember that suddenly she was chasing me around the jungle gyms and swings. She was laughing brightly, and I teased her and dodged this way and that, until she finally caught me and we fell to the ground breathless. When I looked up, I saw a group of children, faceless before the glare of the sun, pointing down at us.
“Coretta has a boyfriend! Coretta has a boyfriend!”
The chants grew louder as a few more kids circled us.
“She’s not my g-girlfriend,” I stammered. I looked to Coretta for some assistance, but she just stood there looking down at the ground. “Coretta’s got a boyfriend! Why don’t you kiss her, mister boyfriend?”
“I’m not her boyfriend!” I shouted. I ran up to Coretta and gave her a slight shove; she staggered back and looked up at me, but still said nothing. “Leave me alone!” I shouted again. And suddenly Coretta was running, faster and faster, until she disappeared from sight. Appreciative laughs rose around me. Then the bell rang, and the teachers appeared to round us back into class.
UPDATE: Romney apologizes:
"I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended ... obviously I apologize," Romney said on Kilmeade & Friends, a radio show....
"I don't remember that incident and I'll tell you I certainly don't believe that I ... thought the fellow was homosexual," Romney said. "That was the furthest thing from my mind back in the 1960s, so that was not the case."

Never waste a good crisis, right?
I wonder, Obama is evolving from what to what?
Okay, so we're gonna hear Romney grade school stories now, eh? So when do we get Obama's high school and college transcripts, or at least some stories of his hijinks and depredations?
Well, well, well. Isn't that convenient? Just when Little Black Jesus has made it OK to be gay, along comes a handful of recovered memories of mean ol' Mitt Romney who wants to shove them right back into the closet (after cutting their hair, of course).
Cue Hat's tiresome anti-Mormon screed in 3 - 2- 1. . .
I assume the fear is that President Romney might mandate crew cuts for all males.
I've also heard, from unnamed sources, that in second grade, he pulled the pigtails of the girl seated in front of him -- her eyes welling with tears. The War on Women was being waged even then.
It was a great country while it lasted.
As Matthew Sablan noted in an earlier post, "Conveniently, the victim died in 2004, and one of the major sources for the story was a member of the Obama campaign in 2008."
So??
We have $15,800,000,000,000 already borrowed, with another $100,000,000,000,000 in unfunded liabilities in Big Entitlement. We have issues with Iran wanting to come up wih a Final Solution to Israel. We have energy issues that could plague the world wide economy for decades.
And what do the Democrats want to run for office on? "Free" birth control for women (but not men) and some alleged story about some low-key bullying that may have occured 50 years ago.
Hey, didn't that (almost) happen in season 2 of Top Chef? The bullying of Marcel.
So Obama is this pure unadulterated kid in HS and beyond that we don't have any stories like these or other of him?
I heard that when Barry was in 1st grade in Indonesia, he called a female student a "poopy pants".
There's no White House-MSM coordination and collusion, how could anyone suggest such a thing.
It is known as "poopygate"
So Romney was a healthy young guy outraged by a flaming queen. What's wrong with that?
Oh for effing Christ's sake.
THIS is what we are going to focus on? The country is in an economic melt down. Unemployment is higher than it has ever been. Chinese companies are taking over US Banks. Our military is shrinking. Manufacturing is almost non existent. Oil and Gas and Coal are going through the roof because of Obama's policies. Food is costing more and more every day. People can't afford to fill their gas tanks, buy groceries, pay their rent or mortgage........
And we want to discuss whether Romney was a big meanie to some faggot back in grade school?
Really?
FOCUS PEOPLE.
One key point: one of the people involved in this story used to work for the Obama campaign, the alleged victim Lauber never mentioned it to his family (he is dead now, so no comment). Not only that, but it seems like a scene out of a movie, as opposed to a scene out of real life. Or from a Stephen King book, like Dream Chaser.
We only just found out the last couple weeks about Obama eating dogs and it was in his best selling never read book. No no, there isn't any liberal bias. The new media is a big help in countering liberal MSM. The liberal media will not be able to save Obama from defeat in Nov.
But did young Romney also eat the kid's dog?
I can remember cutting a kid's hair for an enormous "ducktail" that the teacher (A Christian brother) had asked him to cut for weeks. It too a whole classroom to hold the kid down to do it. Romney must have been a real tough guy to do it alone. Who knew ?
Romney pulled girls' pigtails in kindergarden. He's always been at war with Eastasia. I mean with women.
Matthew Sablan said...

Lauber was a composite that Obama minions cooked er.. dreamed up.
So, is Romney still beating his wife?
This election is about what the candidates did as children and young men, except we can't talk about what the President did as a child or young man because that would be raaaaaccccisssttttt!!!!! Simple, isn't it? Mr. Romney's background (dog crates, bullying) VERY RELEVANT. Mr. Obama's background (broken families, communists, Rezko) NOT RELEVANT.
It's good that the lies come out so early. If only we could see what else WaPo has lying in wait.
Shameless
And yes.....I was being deliberately provocative in my terminology. I'm sick to death of being beaten over the head with the Political Correctness club.
The stories are credible and do not reflect well on Romney. On the other hand, the fact that they are coming to light at just this particular moment inspires a certain amount of cynicism about the Obama campaign and its friends in the media.
It's like the President, his campaign team and his media minions have conceded that the economy sucks, his policies have failed and he can do nothing about it at this point.
Lauber is a real person, who according to his sisters, did come out of the closet sometime after high school. It's amazing that he never thought to tell the story while he was alive, and it had to fall on Romney's old friends, at least some of whom are now his political opponents, to share the story.
Romney just lost the whiney gay vote.
It's a twist on an old joke:
I was attacked by three gay guys in the park. That's right. Two of them pinned me to the ground and the third one did my hair.
* rimshot *
Did he give him a Five Point Geometric Cut? Because that would have looked fabulous!
Oh I can't wait until Andy weighs in!
What incredibly good fortune that all of this is unfolding, just days before Obama's big fundraising event in the capital of the Gay world, Hollywood.
And here's another Romney story from VFR:
Kristor writes:
Whatever else we might say about Romney as a politician, he is admirable as a man. The facts adduced below make it seem highly unlikely to me that Romney is seeking the Presidency in order to compensate for some deficit he feels in himself, or to stroke his ego, or to sate some selfish urge. This bodes well.
Quoting from an email sent to me by a correspondent:
On Romney’s character….
In July 1996, the 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner at Bain Capital, disappeared in New York City. She had attended a “rave” party and gotten high on ecstasy. Three days later, her distraught father had not been able to find her.
When he learned of this, as CEO of Bain Capital, Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York on a chartered airplane to help find Gay’s daughter.
Romney set up a command center at the LaGuardia Marriott and hired a private detective firm to assist with the search. He established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the NYPD, and went through his Rolodex and called everyone Bain did business with in New York, and asked them to help find his friend’s missing daughter.
Romney’s accountants at Price Waterhouse Cooper put up posters on Street poles, while cashiers at a pharmacy owned by Bain put fliers in the bag of every shopper. Romney and the other Bain employees scoured every part of New York and talked with everyone they could: prostitutes, drug addicts, anyone.
That day, their hunt made the evening news, which featured photos of the girl and the Bain employees searching for her.
As a result, a teenaged boy phoned in, asked if there was a reward, and then hung up abruptly.
The NYPD traced the call to a home in New Jersey, where they found the girl in the basement, shivering and experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a massive ecstasy dose. Doctors later said the girl might not have survived another day.
Romney’s former partner credits Mitt Romney with saving his daughter’s life, saying it was the most amazing thing, and he’d never forget for the rest of his life.
Many people are unaware of the fact that Romney was asked by his old employer, Bill Bain, to come back to Bain & Company as CEO and rescue the firm from bankruptcy. Romney left Bain Capital to work at Bain & Company for an annual salary of one dollar.
When Romney went to the rescue of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics, he accepted no salary for three years, and would not use an expense account.
He also accepted no salary as Governor of Massachusetts.
Character counts—and yes, it’s worth reading again!
You can verify the story at Snopes.com.
Prolly be page 1 on the Obama Post tomorrow.
Whew, the kids I bullied as a kid turned out to be straight, likewise for the kids who bullied me.
It sounds like it was about hair conformity, not "presumed" sexuality.
But who is still bullying people in the manner that actually drummed Lauber out of school.
After the incident, Lauber seemed to disappear. He returned days later with his shortened hair back to its natural brown. He finished the year, but ultimately left the school before graduation — thrown out for smoking a cigarette.
If Romney is elected president, are we going to hear about hundreds of anti-gays in the state department?
Because when the Left (or the MSM, in this case) makes vague accusations based on very questionable evidence, it's not really McCarthyism.
Is it?
But conservatives expect President Obama to remember filling out his birth certificate.
Romney does not remember this incident? What a liar. This tells you a lot about his character (or lack there of.)
I still wonder how someone gets kicked out for smoking, but not for assaulting a student. Even if you want to argue Romney was protected because of his father, what about all the boys who joined in with him?
The smell test: It is not passing.
What incredibly good fortune that all of this is unfolding, just days before Obama's big fundraising event in the capital of the Gay world, Hollywood.
This is almost as important as debating what Obama ate as a six year old. Which is important, so I'm sure we'll be debating!
Notice this links to the article about the Lauber incident immediately. Not until paragraph six do they get to Romney saying he doesn't recall the incident. In fact, right before it:
"Romney said the incident involving cutting the hair of John Lauber, whom some students suspected was gay, occurred “a long time ago.”"
Why, if you weren't reading too closely, that would sound like he was involved in the incident!
The WaPo's handling of this is shameful.
Ha. There is no debate, unless you are calling the President a liar, GM.
Did the Washington Post publish serious investigative articles about "what Obama ate as a six year old"?
The eats dog thing was always about kicking the media in the teeth, because they never read the book. Collateral damage elsewhere is just bonus.
Is this an inquisition against straights already?
They need to stop while the gays are fully accepted based upon today's views of rights.
Romney acted totally normal for straights in those days. Sodomy, like pornography, was literally a crime at that time.
This could become an over reach that helps Romney bring out his voters on election day who were not really enamored of a Massachusetts moderate.
The eats dog thing was always about kicking the media in the teeth, because they never read the book.
Right wingers never read the book?
Garage: No one did. That's why the fact Obama eats dogs was news nearly three years into his presidency. No one actually read his autobiography.
Gays are financially suffering under Obama's oppressive, anti-free market policies.
This will be a clarifying election as it identifies who can be easily played among all the various groups. We'll identify the easy marks among women, gays, students. etc.
If Obama seems to be talking to you - he is, and he cares about you and your concerns deeply, and you can help him to help you at this link...
No, there is no link you dummy.
This could become an over reach that helps Romney bring out his voters on election day who were not really enamored of a Massachusetts moderate.
I agree. Seriously, vetting teenage boy pranks?
It humanizes Romney and makes the MSM look ridiculous and ridiculously in the tank for O.
Garage: No one did. That's why the fact Obama eats dogs was news nearly three years into his presidency. No one actually read his autobiography.
The book sold millions of copies. The claim is the media will not vet Obama. Why would the right then rely on the media to vet him?
Funny how this didn't come out back during the 2008 primary season.
Then again its not like he suggested some black guy change his name to Tom.
"'He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!' an incensed Romney told Matthew Friedemann"
Uh, hate to tell you, but '65 was the height of Beatlemania and some guys were wearing their hair in all kinds of weird ways (I went to an all-boys school, too) and everybody laughed it off (one guy bleached his hair surfer-style and everybody called him "peroxy locks"), so I'm more than skeptical.
Interesting the WaPo had this all ready.

And Zero's medical records.
I have heard Biden picked on the kids who were smarter than him and Obama hated the ones who did not need a teleprompter for their class presentations.
Sounds consistent to me as part of the narrative that Romney is not a real human being. This coupled with that time he tried to force a Mormon woman to give up her child because she wasn't married. It all adds up to Romney is a ghoul.
Too bad Romney couldn't afford some blow.
Bullying is far more then pranking. Romney is not qualified to be President. He's an evil man.
I'm waiting for the kindergarten stories before I pass judgement.
It would be interesting to know Obama's thoughts and attitudes on the subject from his days in Muslim dominated countries. (Not really, but I bet Obama wasn't all the hot on gays during those days. Wonder if he was getting high.) Bringing up shit from childhoods doesn't win my support for anyone. The Dems just love to foment hate.
"Right wingers never read the book?"
But, it makes a great shim to level out that old refrigerator we can't afford to replace right now.
The book sold millions of copies.
If I'm not mistaken, the bible is the number one best-selling book of all time. Very rare are those that have read it cover to cover, though.
Buying a thing does not mean you're using a thing. Just look at all those hybrids Miami-Dade County bought and let sit for years and years.
Mitt's a sociopath, I'm convinced. Bullying gays, bullying a pregnant woman, loves firing people. He fits the MO.
I have heard Biden picked on the kids who were smarter than him...
We know that's a lie because Biden believes no one is smarter than him.
Bullying is far more then pranking. Romney is not qualified to be President. He's an evil man.
Finally...the bipolar constituency has spoken. At least we know where you stand at the moment.
Antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) is described by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, fourth edition (DSM-IV-TR), as an Axis II personality disorder characterized by "...a pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood."[1]
Sounds like Mittens!
This song perfectly captures the barbaric zeitgeist of 1965 that some are talking about here.
"The incident was recalled similarly by five students"
Care to give us the political affiliation of those 5 students?
2012 will be the great expose' that the media does on itself.
The low-hanging fruit will be a bounty for the right. A perfect storm is gonna bring big changes to the MSM. Heads will roll...eventually.
This coupled with that time he tried to force a Mormon woman to give up her child because she wasn't married.
The story that I read was that was that an unmarried woman who already had six kids (or maybe this was number six) was pregnant and considering having an abortion but Romney counseled her in his role as bishop to put the child up for adoption instead. She ultimately decided to have the baby and keep it.
Care to give us the political affiliation of those 5 students?
One of them has been a Necrocrat since 2004.
I don't care.
I would hate to be judged on my behavior in middle school/high school.
@ThorleyW--Never get in the way of a sociopath when he's on a commenting roll at Althouse.
So in less than a week we've gone from the narrative that Romney is a effeminate girly-boy who wouldn't have ordered the killing of OBL, to the narrative that Romney is a tough, heartless gay basher.
Coming soon, the argument that Romney is, in fact, gay as manifest by his bullying gays when he was young to hide the fact.
Meanwhile, the Romney team plays rope-a-dope.
This is going to be fun to watch, when the Obama crowd is all punched out.
Buying a thing does not mean you're using a thing.
The question is why the right wing won't vet Obama, since the MSM will not. Three years, and nobody from the right can read and analyze a book? "The media won't vet Obama" is then just whining, isn't it?
I also heard that Mitt Romney claimed to have tagged little Jimmy Wheeler when clearly he missed him.
Romney also once took a cookie from the jar without asking for it.
Most of us didn't bully others in high school. A vote for Obama is a vote against all the bullies!
So I can now see how it is with the conservatives. When allegations are made against Obama, it's 100% true. But when it's against their holy Mittens, it's 100% false, made up charges.
So, basically, Democrats are framing this election around culture wars?
Interesting. Have to stir up fears and make the Republican seem like a scary man who will take away all your rights and, more than that, make you have a bad haircut.
Next up, most likely, a story will come out that Obama actually ate gay people when younger.
This election is getting boring.
Let's ask them both about their masturbation habits as teenagers. It could be a topic in the first debate. What did they do, and just what were they thinking when they did it.
This too should help us choose a president.
EXTRA! EXTRA! Read all about it: Alex will vote Obama because Romney's a nut job. By special dispensation Alex will be allowed to cast his vote from inside his padded cell.
I can see conservatives trying to muddy the waters by comparing foolish behavior with outright felonious bullying. Eric Holder should charge Mitt Romney with a hate crime, have him frog marched in front of his kids.
Isn't this the episode where Cliff gets thrown off because he held down Marcel while Sam, Ilan, and Elia tried to shave his head?
Please pack your knives and go.
Obama bullied a black girl
That's a relief!
Wait - was she a closeted lesbian? Maybe she was really a primary-school transvestite... or, maybe a young boy forced to wear his sister's hand-me-downs? Where's the National Enquirer when you need it?
Inn any case, his early experiences with girls formed his attitudes towards women who work for him, eh?
Somebody please please please write up Mitt's incident as if Obama were writing about it in the first person.
"The scissors hummed beneath my fingers"
@garage--Until Seamus the Dog became a Major Political Issue, nobody gave a damn about Obama's culinary predilections.
It's not vetting, it's mockery. You should be familiar with the tactic by now.
"... The question is why the right wing won't vet Obama, since the MSM will not..."
Actually I won't be suprised if you do see excerpts from his book be tossed out there. Last election you guys were so focused on Palin's vagina and whether or not she was versed in 17th century English literature that the MSM didn't care if Obamas circle of friends in college were Marxists and radicals or that black guys named Tim who wear argylle socks and have white girlfriends should change their name to Tom.
Most of us didn't bully others in high school. A vote for Obama is a vote against all the bullies!
You have obviously never been around a group of junior high girls. Talk about vicious.
"... I would hate to be judged on my behavior in middle school/high school..."
Just wait, we might be finding out how often Mitt soiled his diapers on a daily basis.
"She was plump and dark"
That Barry Obama, always picking on the fat kids, even today.
Romney: “Back in high school I did some dumb things and if anybody was hurt by that or offended by that I apologize.”
Regarding the high school stuff, that's fine with me, story over. I'm sure everyone did some stuff in high school they should apologize for, and Romney was willing to do so.
Now he just needs to apologize for the current anti-gay bigotry in his life.
Now he just needs to apologize for the current anti-gay bigotry in his life.
Even IF that were true, and you cannot show any anti gay bigotry on the part of Romney as a person.....
No, he doesn't have to apologize.
AndyR: What is the current anti-gay bigotry in Romney's life? Or do you not accept the concept that there are non-bigoted people who do not believe that same sex marriage is a good idea? Your personal bigotry is often on display but I am interested in what bigotry is in Romney's "life?"
I see Memes as an assumed reality taken for granted to be true by a speaker.
My favorite Dem meme is that Tea Party members are feral children who are dangerous to peaceful political order.
The meme of the GOP being at war with women's contraceptives comes in a close second.
Now in third place and moving up fast is a meme that the GOP is dedicated to exclude gays from civil rights.
But that third one may be quasi true, and that could empower a belief in the first two that are false.
The GOP is being very skillfully divided.
Garage: Nobody, on the left or the right, read Obama's book. Or they read it as fiction. The fact that it sold millions of copies is meaningless. How many copies of War and Peace have gone unread? Or the Bible for that matter.
Whatever, tg.

AndyR: What is the current anti-gay bigotry in Romney's life?
His religion won't let Hatman do whatever he feels like doing, but expects him to live by a moral code.
How dare he!
I've heard that Zero kicked his Mom [a white woman] in the stomach before he was even born. Shhhh. Don't tell.
Even as a young child, Obama did what all the cool kids told him to do.
Obama can't run on his record, so we get this 50 year old story to convince us about how terrible Romney is.
This is the best the liberals can do.
I heard about this and burst out laughing.
Not because of what Romney did, but because of how pathetic it makes the Washington Post seem. I didn't think they could top the Rick Perry "racial slur on a rock" story, but there you go.
Someone needs to do a dramatic reading of the Washington Post story. Make sure to set the poem to some sort of sad, classical piano piece. Maybe an ominous thunder crash after the recounting of each of Romney's horrible pranks.
That's what this shit devolves into - apologizing for things you did 50 years ago.
Althouse boots people for using the N-word, but I guess the F-word is okay, huh.
Such a classy joint.
WAPO just negated any good sentiments generated from Obama's sharing his faux er.. personal belief about gay marriage.
Everyone has done something they wouldn't want everyone to know about. It's telling that the worst things liberals (who have every resource and motivation) can come up with are mild and normal examples of things most people have done.
Who hasn't bullied someone else by mocking or belittling, even physical assault is normal, if not exactly laudable. The glee I feel about the revelations about Obama's history is much less about the actual thing, (who cares if he ate dog he was served in Indonesia, or his grades, or his ancestors) than it's about all the efforts to hide it or use similar things to paint the opposition as evil. I'm willing to concede that Mitt has had a normal life including making other people uncomfortable and even (gasp) sometimes giving bad advice.
I just believe that, on balance, Romney's values and accomplishments are ones I can support. Especially, when the choice is between him and Obama.
@Michael
I still to this day hear "Who is Obama??" "Why won't the media vet him?"
Get off your ass and vet him yourself!

Well not necessarily EVERYONE. Wife maybe.

-- Those questions are an indictment of the media, which literally went dumpster diving through Palin's trash and posted a patently false story about an affair McCain never had.
You don't seem to get it; for the most part, Republicans are more informed about Obama's past. We know about Ayers, Rezko, and all. It is just laughable that, the sort of trivia that would be common knowledge about a Republican, is not being unearthed by the media, but instead, leaking out years later by conservatives on Twitter to mock the media. We don't care he ate a dog or had a composite girlfriend (or bullied a black girl) or said a black man should change his name to Tom: These are all things that the media would have a field day with, if only he were -R.
I did a lot of stupid things when I was younger. Called people bad names. Made fun of people who are different. Even did a little bullying myself.
And now?
My views on same-sex relations are pretty conservative/traditional - and I get along just great with my bisexual {member of immediate family}.
"Romney shouting, “Atta girl!”"
OMG, the horror!
And all Obama would say is, "GOD DAMN AMERICA", or at least his preacher for 20 years would in front of him but he somehow didn't here it.
Speaking of gay bullying, Vinnie Barbarino is in the news.
Welcome to my back, Kotter
Romney allegedly called a boy a girl while in High School.
Obama, while an adult, insulted the mentally handicapped while talking about his bowling skills.
Clearly, we know who the bigot is.
Now he just needs to apologize for the current anti-gay bigotry in his life.
He needs to, Hat? Yet Harry Reid gets a pass? Interesting to know the criteria by which you determine who gets packed off to the reeducation camps.
"... I still to this day hear "Who is Obama??" "Why won't the media vet him?"
Get off your ass and vet him yourself!.."
Actually he has been on this forum. It's been proved he favors Marxist policies, appoints people to his Cabinet who favor communists, attended a church for 20 years whose racist preacher gave sermons on how bad white people are and that we had 9/11 coming to us. Thinks gunowners and religious people are bitter...
But none of that matters to people like you because you voted for him. Which means you agree with him or you just overlook it because of his dreaminess.
Garage: That is exactly the attitude I would expect you to have since the lefty media is incurious at best and shows no interest in vetting our leader. Our leader, who by the way was against gay marriage before he was for it and before he was for it again after being against it once more. Depending, of course, on the direction of the wind and the contributions. But we will get off our asses, as you suggest, and continue our research into the academic record of our smartest president ever.
Back in 1965, it was a completely different world. Gays were deeep in the closet, had zero impact on the culture, and most of us in high school had literally no awareness of gays, they just weren't part of our world. I don't know if this incident happened or if it happened as reported but I think it is unlikely that Mitt realized that this particular deeply closeted classmate was gay.
Looks like Wapo is going the NYT route, sacrificing credibility to do election year propagandizing.
Not just one Koch; two. Romney has excellent gaydar, according to the Washington Post.
but yet everybody downplays obamas decades long relations with wright, ayers, etc.
I went to high school in the 1970's, and I can remember our entire English class holding down one kid and drawing a goatee and mustache on his face with ink pen. I can't recall if I was part of it, but I do remember laughing at the result. I wonder where the teacher was? I also don't recall anyone getting in trouble for it. And I don't think the kid was gay, but people used to tease him with that word because his last name rhymed with it. Things were tolerated back then that just aren't tolerated now.
Garage: That is exactly the attitude I would expect you to have since the lefty media is incurious at best and shows no interest in vetting our leader.
The right shows no interest either, except whining why others aren't doing it.
"When asked by The Barna Group what words or phrases best describe Christianity, the top response among Americans ages 16-29 was “antihomosexual.” For a staggering 91 percent of non-Christians, this was the first word that came to their mind when asked about the Christian faith. "
Source.
I love this faux confusion about Romney's anti-gay views. I thought it was going to take a little longer for people to stop giving Christians a pass on their anti-gay bigotry. Apparently not. People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry just because they say magic sky god fairy man told them to hate the gays.
"The right shows no interest either, except whining why others aren't doing it."
-- If they showed no interest in it, then how do we know Obama eats dogs and lied about the composite nature of the woman in his autobiography?
Oh right, because you're inconsistent and uninformed.
The right shows no interest either, except whining that others aren't doing it.
That'd be news to Breitbart, at least.
But I know, garage - I don't care, Obama is awesome.
Simply repeating, over and over, denigrating things about Christians doesn't make it true.
People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry just because they say magic sky god fairy man told them to hate the gays.
So you're going to be an intolerant bigot in order to stop others from being an intolerant bigot?
Just how much tinfoil does that hat of yours have lining it?
The leftie hacks bringing up school days stories reminds me of Paul the Apostle and his conversion. Paul "intensely persecuted" persecuted Christians, but, then, he was converted.
He became a great and still revered Christian leader. Christians forgave and welcomed him. Democrats and lefties forgive no one and persecute everyone who disagrees with them. The only limits to their lieing and stealing is what they can get away with. Honesty and integrity are completely foreign to the left. Totalitarianism is their only goal.
Garage: The right was responsible for you and me knowing about the splendid Reverend Wright. And the cash award offered by some righties for the famously wonderful transcripts of our smartest president ever may yield some results. Give it time. The right wing National Enquirer kept us from having John Edwards as VP.
Actually, Hillary Clinton gave us Rev. Wright and most of the "Is Obama a Muslim" talk.

So damning! I mean, when I'm looking for thoughtful discussion & reasoned opinion on Christianity, gay marriage, and other issues, I look for guidance from 16 year olds!
Your stupidity knows no limits.
ADDED: Obama bullied a black girl:
How like Obama to pick on girl. Oh, and there is all the race tension too. She is Black aaaaaaaaaand fat.
People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry just because they say magic sky god fairy man told them to hate the gays.
Clown, you've never once, ever, challenged Obama on his views on gay marriage.
Nor have you ever "challenged" any other elected Democrat who opposes gay marriage.
You're a flailing idiot.
AndyR, to prove Christian bigotry against gays, links to a Christian website favoring gay marriage.
People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry just because they say magic sky god fairy man told them to hate the gays.
And I love the way you misrepresent Christian teaching and beliefs.
Are you really this ignorant or just a liar?
How many people are going to give a damn who marries who if the nation goes insolvent and starts fraying around the edges? Do you suppose gay rights will be protected when the police have barely enough resources to keep themselves alive?
(yes, I'm a little dystopic today)
Thus far, whenever one of these diversions has come out it has blown up in the left's face in spectacular fashion as we find out Obama has done worse than whatever it is his opponent was supposed to have done.
I don't think the little girl story qualifies though it is close. If Romney cut some kid's hair then I would expect Obama to have at least eaten a kid... and his dog.
It will be interesting to see what comes out.
Unfortunately, as amusing as Obama has been, we literally can no longer afford him.
Are you really this ignorant or just a liar?
I'd go with ignorant, Jay. In my experience, the most militant Christian-bashers couldn't tell you what the Church teaches or why she does if you put a gun to their heads. They're the sort who think the Catechism consists of nothing more than creepy anti-wymyn homophobe boy rapers.
Do you suppose gay rights will be protected when the police have barely enough resources to keep themselves alive?
Amen to that, Scott. "Gay marriage" and "gay rights" are profoundly silly questions in a national debate. But it seems we are doomed to end our days as a profoundly silly country.
"People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry just because they say magic sky god fairy man told them to hate the gays."
Meanwhile, the Christians you're "challenging" so bravely listen politely to your unique insights into their theology. After which they head over to the neighborhood potluck at that old house that nice gay couple fixed up, and then head home to fall asleep after asking the magic sky god fairy man to look after that guy in the ballcap who always seems so angry.
"... People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry just because they say magic sky god fairy man told them to hate the gays..."
I'm pretty sure Christians don't give a shit about your challenges Andy. Being gay and an atheist put you in the loser category in the eyes of all religions anyway.
You guys need to ease off of Alex. In case you hadn't noticed, he takes great delight in goring everyones favorite oxes. He treats 'em all disparagingly. As such, he is an honorable person.
As such, he is an honorable person.
Sure, in the way a Micheal Vick pitbull might be honorable. Those things will attack anything that moves.
I saw a headline on google news that Romney has apologized for this. I suppose he had to, but I wish he hadn't, and just said something about the state of Obama's economy and how that is what the focus should be on.
"magic sky god fairy man" You mean Obama?
God is something else altogether, and no doubt watches you with tolerance and love even while you act childishly. Your lack of imagination is not proof of anything, but just in the off chance you care at all, God doesn't tell anyone to hate. Hate is not of God.
I'd go with ignorant, Jay. In my experience, the most militant Christian-bashers couldn't tell you what the Church teaches or why she does if you put a gun to their heads. They're the sort who think the Catechism consists of nothing more than creepy anti-wymyn homophobe boy rapers.
Agreed.
On some level his ignorance is actually tragic. It is easy to poke fun, but you wonder how hollow the experience of going through life knowing so little (and not being at all intellectually curious enough to challenge your assumptions) must be.
People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry
Speaking as an atheist -- I wish you would.
Mostly because you're boring and we've all heard it all before, but secondarily because you encourage Christians -- i.e., the overwhelming majority of Americans -- to hate atheists and homosexuals.
"I'm an atheist and I'm a complete prick" inevitably encourages people to think "atheist=complete prick".
People are linking this on Facebook as though it is important.
We are doomed by our unseriousness.
Are you really this ignorant or just a liar?
Andy's incredibly ignorant about religion - he knows nothing and tends to just mouth whatever the cool kids on tv think.
He's not above dishonesty, of course, as can be seen from his selective outrage.
Nevertheless, in this case, I'd go with ignorant.
I heard about this and burst out laughing.
I burst out laughing when I read it and got to the part reading, "As Lauber, his eyes filling with tears, screamed for help, Romney repeatedly clipped his hair with a pair of scissors."
Such vivid memories after so many years! And not even memories from Lauber!
"I'm an atheist and I'm a complete prick" inevitably encourages people to think "atheist=complete prick".
It never seems to dawn on the ideologically driven, like Andy, that the reason people don't like them or respect their views has nothing to do with atheism or being gay.
It has to do with them. I don't hate gays or hate atheists.....just YOU.
Actually I don't hate Andy either. Just really annoyed at his obtuseness.
Let's see -- how old was Mitt Romney?
Mmmmm Mmmmm Mmmmmmmm
About Trayvon Martin's age?
Young people do stupid things.
Right, you typical whites who do stupid things?
Squirrel!!!11!!1
"I'm an atheist and a complete prick inevitably encourages people to think "atheist=complete dick."
I can only speak for myself (Roman Catholic), Revenant, but I don't look on atheists that way. If you're willing to have a reasoned back-and-forth on the case for or against religion, I'll be happy to join in.
If you start, however, by ridiculing my God as a "magic sky fairy" I've already tuned you out.
"I still wonder how someone gets kicked out for smoking, but not for assaulting a student. Even if you want to argue Romney was protected because of his father, what about all the boys who joined in with him?
The smell test: It is not passing."
How old are you, Matthew?
I'm not being snarky. It's a real question. I was born in '64 so I was a year old when this supposedly happened.
I can easily believe that a boy or a boy and his friends would not get kicked out of school for fighting. They might get in trouble, but boys fighting wasn't seen as the horror it is today. You were expected to work it out, get your big brother to clobber the miscreants, or show you how to throw a punch, something like that.
Also, calling a boy a girl has a long history of being the insult of choice, the same way that your DI calls you all "ladies". It's not an insult to gay men. It's an insult to *women*.
But smoking? Depends on where, and I'm guessing this wasn't a public school, but I know a girl my own age who lost a whole pay-grade for smoking at basic training. It's the context as much as the offense, of course, but why would it be hard to believe that a boy would get expelled for getting caught smoking?

Disagree. Strongly. Alex abuses the Socratic method, taking contrarian positions just for it's own sake. Look at his assertions in this thread for example. They are just inflammatory rather than attempting to get anyone to question their own views.
Remember vbspurs? I believe she used to call him out on that point as well.
@DADvocate
Interesting(at least to me) was that studying the story of Paul, I grew disenchanted with Pauline Christianity. I think there is much good to come from Paul and his descendents, but now I question whether we as Christians, and as a Catholic specifically, didn't lose something when Paul became the leader of the church.
Those studying biblical history know that James, who was Jesus' brother was the first Bishop of Jerusalem. This post eventually evolved into the Pope of the Catholic church.
But before that, the Jews revolted, in the year 77 a.d. As punishment, the Romans exiled all the Jews from Judea. Paul, had been wandering the countryside preaching that Jesus was for gentiles too.(Paul was a gentile). He had been driven out of Judea by the church Jesus had established, for being an apostate. The Romans looked around, found this hermit preaching peace and love to anyone that would listen to him, and set him on James' throne(James had died, by either accident, or Roman/Jewish assassination). By the time the Jews were finally allowed back into the city, Pauline Christianity was a thriving church under Roman protection. There was little they could do until they got their independence.
I cut corners but basically that's the story. It is fascinating to delve deeper into it though.
It is dificulty for me to believe that the WaPo would publish such absolute bullshit. If this is the bestg the oppo research can come up with, its going to be a bleak October for them--unless, of course, they go full Dan Rather/Lucy Ramirez on Mr Romney.
This is the state of our MSM--genuinely sad.
"It's the context as much as the offense, of course, but why would it be hard to believe that a boy would get expelled for getting caught smoking?"
-- I can believe that; but not that a group of kids assaulting another, in such a way that one of the people who participated in the assault described it as a horrifying, terrifying experience that -- to this day -- still haunts him, would get off without any of the authority figures involved being completely unable to even recall the incident.
Oh, also: 27, going on 28.
The timing of the WaPo story is more than a little cute, but it does (accidentally) reveal something important.
Even in high school, Mitt was a natural leader.
@chickenlittle
You are probably right. I don't have any training in debate or philosophy. I just read what people post, check my outrage meter, and if ain't redlining, try to see their viewpoint. I just figgered Alex just did this because he's Alex. I can accept that. I can accept that he treats everyone the same, as such I try not to summarily discount him. I did get into once with him before I realized it was Alex being Alex.
I guess the one thing we won't talk about this election is that we are the brokest country that has ever existed and that WE ARE DOOMED.
Remember -- one of the people says they feared they'd get in trouble. The school, per their own telling, knew about this attack. But, yet, no one in the administration is quoted, and those that are, recall Romney as a model, if boisterous, student with no disciplinary actions. That hardly sounds like "pinned a fellow student with a group of older, stronger boys and cut his hair while the victim cried, but hey, it was just one time."

Don't really understand your reasoning. Why would attacking both left and right guarantee that Alex is honorable? Why is it good to be disparaging toward "all"?
His posts just in this thread seem unhinged. In this thread alone, Alex claimed that Romney is:
* a ghoul
* not a real human being
* an evil man
* a sociopath
* has Antisocial personality disorder
* is a felonious bully and that a vote for Obama is a vote against all bullies
In addition Alex said that Romney should be arrested for allegedly cutting this kid's hair nearly 50 years ago and frog marched in front of Romney's kids.
That is some psycho stuff, all in one thread. BTW, he is clearly for Obama.
after asking the magic sky god fairy man to look after that guy in the ballcap who always seems so angry.
Heh. Andy never learned that you catch more flies with honey.
So, if I got this straight, anything before 2004 involving Obama is off-limits --- but Romney's childhood is very much fair game?
Intriguing.
Obama did cocaine at a later age than Romney allegedly bullied some twerp who couldn't get over it for FIFTY DAMNED YEARS.
Hey, Obama's drug use in college should be markedly more relevant than what Romney did in high school, one would think.
"... People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry.."
Then again don't expect acceptance or toleration from a group of people whose beliefs you consider a fairy tale.
Just sayin
I guess the one thing we won't talk about this election is that we are the brokest country that has ever existed and that WE ARE DOOMED.
Like that matters. Didn't you know that Romney MIGHT have bullied a kid 50 damned years ago?
"Obama did cocaine at a later age than Romney allegedly bullied some twerp who couldn't get over it for FIFTY DAMNED YEARS."
-- The alleged victim only seemed bothered by it, if it happened, when one of his attackers approached him in air port. Otherwise, there's no record of him ever talking about with anyone else that the WaPo presents. If it happened, the victim doesn't seem to have been too phased.
People like me aren't going to stop challenging Christians over their bigotry just because they say magic sky god fairy man told them to hate the gays.
Asking for acceptance while routinely insulting over 90% of the population doesn't seem like the best strategy I've ever heard of.
When I was in Catholic grade school, I fought every single day at recess. That is what we did. The nuns let us go unless we picked up a weapon. In high school, it was completely normal to get into fights at school. Nobody got kicked out.
Different times, different ideas on how to produce a manly man.
The alleged victim only seemed bothered by it, if it happened, when one of his attackers approached him in air port. Otherwise, there's no record of him ever talking about with anyone else that the WaPo presents. If it happened, the victim doesn't seem to have been too phased.
I could be snarky and say that those 5 kids are trying to alleviate the guilt they still hold after 50 damned years or what have you --- but this is, easily, the stupidest political "story" I have ever seen.
And why isn't Mitt asking about Obama's cocaine use, since apparently, that kind of stuff is now fair game?
If anything, I'm curious, if it happened, if Romney was really the ring leader? The other boys-at-the-time seem to harbor some long-standing guilt issues over whatever happened, and seem to have remembered it more. Romney doesn't recall it at all. So, that's interesting.
I should have added that Jesus was the first born, but not an only child.(such pronouncements upset the more doctrine inclined) But the research is there to support the claim.
And I'm not even going to get into the Council of Nicea.(talk about a can of worms)
I was more just trying to defend the victim; he's not a whiner. If it happened, he appears to have toughed it out like a champ, with people on campus actually seeming to like him afterwards.
I was more just trying to defend the victim; he's not a whiner. If it happened, he appears to have toughed it out like a champ, with people on campus actually seeming to like him afterwards.
Good point. Seems that Romney may have led a collection of whining twerps in an act of bullying.
...so, clearly, he'd work well with the Democrats in Congress.
BAZINGA!
Then again don't expect acceptance or toleration from a group of people whose beliefs you consider a fairy tale.

I thought you were going to say something along the lines of "I find your lack of faith..."
Go ahead. I need a fix.
And why didn't this come up when Romney was running in Massachusetts in the early 2000s?
With gay marriage being legal in 04', this story would of popped up in the Boston Globe.
@Steve Koch
Didn't say Alex was sane, but I've seen him rip on Obama too. Who on here keeps bitchin' about "fairness" in the media? Alex supplies it. He hates everyone. That is my only point. Dislike him for ripping your guy, but not for ripping the other just means you want to live in a echo chamber. And that's fine. But give him his due, he spouts shit about everyone. I have no doubt, he and I will get into an argument sometime in the future. Just take it for what it's worth, a good example of the first amendment. Grow tougher skin and sleep good at night. But don't let him bother you.
Renee: The victim was alive in 2000 and on his death bed in 2004. It would've been inconvenient if the actual victim was alive to explain that the event did not happen as reported. Or did not happen at all.
I mean, they have enough witnesses (plus an anonymous one!), to make it not look as bad as if they were going with only one person's recollection, but... still a pretty shameful story.
Carnifex,
Your comment contained so much stupid that it would take too much time for me to rip each individual nugget of dumb. No wonder everybody is ripping you a new asshole. You are in a hole, stop digging.

But is it as relevant as borrowing FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS and signing our names as guarantor? Hmmmm?
I guess not.
WTF, I'll just go home with my puny financial theories and hit the SoCo - hey, it's 5 o'clock somewhere.
Seriously, this is the knock on Romney? This is like when Hillary went after Obama's grade-school ambition to be President. First the dog thing, and now this. I guess the campaign strategy is "Make Romney really unlikable, because our record really sucks."
But is it as relevant as borrowing FIVE TRILLION DOLLARS and signing our names as guarantor? Hmmmm?
Don't even get me started on how livid I am that my two sons are being forced to bankroll promises made by Obama.
...or that my in-laws love Obama and ALSO happen to basically be dependent on the government for their expenses and make considerably more money than I do in the process.

I think there is much good to come from Paul and his descendents, but now I question whether we as Christians, and as a Catholic specifically, didn't lose something when Paul became the leader of the church.
Paul is definitely a more controversial figure than most of the other new testament folks. Most of the passages people gripe about most are from him, it seems like.
but this is, easily, the stupidest political "story" I have ever seen.
I don’t know, racist rock is pretty much the gold standard for me.
Romney also ran in 1994 against Ted Kennedy. Again, this could of came up. Romney received 40% of the vote in that election, which considering it is Massachusetts and a Kennedy, a strong vote for him.
We had protections against sexual orientation since 1988 in Massachusetts, and even those like myself in Massachusetts who disagree with gay marriage, we are pretty supportive of protections for gays.
My support for marriage isn't based on hatred, but rather a value in both a mother and father. Too much fatherless, and I wish public policy would help promote stability 'for the sake of the children'. It doesn't mean there aren't legal issues to address the legal needs of non-marital relationships, I wished we created a strong form of domestic partnership laws open to adult relationships, while making marriage stronger for children.
But whatever, moot point I guess.
This distraction is one of the reasons that CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATS ARE WRITING IN MICKEY MOUSE FOR 2012 PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE in our June 5th election. There are 6 solid reasons Mickey Mouse is a better choice than Barak Obama, and we want to see write-in percentages on par with those of New Hampshire, North Carolina, and West Virgina!
Carnifex - thanks for the synopsis.
I was just trying to point out that the belief that people change over time and youthful transgressons and sometimes adult transgressons shouldn't be held against them is an integral part of Christianity. Today's Democratic Party and lefties in general will soon be claiming Romney unfit for the presidency because he pooped in his diapers as an infant.
Of course, Obama the Great is somewhat immune from this stuff because of where and how he grew up. And, apparently, nothing he ever did matters any way whether ignoring the plight of his brother, using drugs, etc as an adult. But, prep school pranks!!!
I don’t know, racist rock is pretty much the gold standard for me.
Racist rock, true, was pretty asinine. It's hard to beat the complaint that he didn't paint over a rock before his family owned the land (then again, Progressives do tend to like vandalism, so that concept might be foreign)
But "high school jackassery" seems even more of a stretch.
Of course, Obama the Great is somewhat immune from this stuff because of where and how he grew up. And, apparently, nothing he ever did matters any way whether ignoring the plight of his brother, using drugs, etc as an adult.
That'd require Democrats treating blacks like equal people.
And they aren't doing that.
Man, Bush's "soft bigotry of low expectations" might be one of the most cogent comments I've heard in years.
and I get along just great with my bisexual {member of immediate family}.
I hope it's your wife. ; )
Why is Obama rolling out all these ridiculous attacks now, when only the political wonks are watching -- and shooting them down?
First it's War on Women, Seamus the dog, Rich Man, now bully? And all are swatted down by eager bloggers?
Are they dumb or just crafty?
nd I get along just great with my bisexual {member of immediate family}.
I'm really pulling for the SSM lobby. While they're completely ignoring the civil rights violations of the polyamorous amongst us, I'm sure they won't use the same arguments against polygamists that are currently being used against them. I'm just sure of it.
After all, I think having a second wife would be great. You get all the benefits of a stay-home mom and a working wife, plus, well, PLUS. I'm sure my first wife can "evolve" her feelings on the matter.

Re: the latest incident, it is all about gay fund raising lagging for the dems. The gays and other dems have been demanding that Obama do something, anything on the gay front before they would loosen the purse strings.
In response, you see this carefully orchestrated Obama/Biden/JournoList response. First Biden tests the waters with his "slip of the tongue". They do it with Biden because he screws up so much that it gives them deniability in case the reaction was really bad.
Next Obama realizes that he has "evolved". Next the dem media propagandists (aka journolisters) get together and manufacture an incident from Mitt's teenage years that "proves" Mitt is anti gay. It is most probable that, if the incident happened at all, Mitt had no idea the deeply closeted kid was gay but no matter.
All of this is timed to occur just before the dems do major fund raisers with the gays this weekend. So all of this BS is just about fund raising from a particular dem Privileged Interest Group (PIG).
It is way past time to stop calling these frauds news people, they are simply dem media propagandists.
Carnifex...Saul was not a gentile. He was a Jew from the Roman City Tarsus and therefore was born a Roman citizen. But he was raised as a Pharisee Sect of Judaism in Jerusalem. He was of the Tribe of Benjamin, circumcised on the 8th day, and lived as a Pharisee.
The Gospels are good reads about what Jesus did, but Christian doctrine today is actually taken from Paul's gospel that he says he received as a revelation directly from the ascended Jesus in a heavenly vision.
Paul's epistles are an account of Paul's gospel of grace through faith and and trust in being lead by the Holy Spirit rather than keeping Law. That made the legalists in Jerusalem his enemy, and they did try to kill him many times for "teaching against the Torah of Moses."
Paul was feisty enough to teach that Christians are no longer under the law of Moses, and that all accusations of violating Moses' law of sin and death have been nailed to the cross of Jesus and settled there forever by faith in the sacrificial death of the Lamb of God who was dead and buried and then raised from the dead three days later as the sign that we are our justified.
"White, in an interview with ABC News, said that he is “still debating” whether he will help the campaign, remarking, “It’s been a long time since we’ve been pals.” While the Post reports White as having “long been bothered” by the haircutting incident,” he told ABC News he was not present for the prank."
Oh, I am looking so much righter
The unraveling begins.

I was ok with this until I heard they cut the guys fucking hair and Romney, of course, said he didn't remember it.
You wouldn't remember something like that?
Titus: Not if it didn't happen. And, seeing as the WaPo has been found lying about one part of the story, it very well could have been embellished or fabricated. They didn't even need to lie about White; they could have left his comment out entirely and not hurt their story. They included the lie because White is the guy who brought the Romneys together, so they wanted to use someone who appears friendly to Romney to make it more sinister.
Too bad they lied.
Two points --
1. The Obama story isn't really comparable, because that's kind of Obama getting bullied into treating the girl poorly.
2. I love that Romney says "fellow."
Romney didn't remember it but he does remember that he didn't think the kid was gay because back then that wasn't talked about.
So he doesn't remember this but remembers that he didn't think the kid was gay.
Nice, and Althouse is still sucking his cock.
You know Romney will be better for gays then Teddy Kennedy....but his views haven't changed. He is really such a liar and a really bad politician. And I voted for him for governor of Mass but every one of his views have changed since then and will continue to change to fit whatever audience, state or zip code. At least Rick Santorum was sincere.
Lovely.

How does any of that "advice" translate to a vote for Barack Obama?
At this point you're just asking people to stay home.
I believe Tom Maguire at JOM had link a week ago that debunked the Obama story in Dreams. The only black girl in the school said it didn't happen to her. Another Ayers concoction, like the shifting tidal currents.
