"I wonder if he realizes that America doesn't want to look at him and listen to him for 4 years."
Says Meade, watching one of the Sunday morning talking-heads shows. He says that right after I say: "I can't believe how bad he looks! What happened to him?"

Meade = America!
What did David Gregory ever do to you?
Who is he?
Are you talking about Obama? :) It can't be Romney.
Gingrich.
Meade = America!
"Meade In America" could be a catchy slogan around Madison, promoting goods, services, and opinions. link
Incompetence takes its toll. Meade's right, GodZero looks like Hell.
He hasn't got a clue what to do and, since he's been socially promoted all his life, this is the first real criticism he's ever had and he can't deal with it.
PS The title of the post is on the money. From the start, anyone who's followed Rasmussen's Approval Index knows Zero goes up a little over the weekend because people don't have to look at him or listen to him.
Anytime we hear from him or see him, his numbers drop
Forget his numbers. My wife and I have noticed that every time he gives a speech or presser, the market tanks the nest day. Over 200 points down after his last presser. Forget his numbers. Those are our numbers.
"What happened to him?"
1. Presidents age in office.
2. We get sick of the things which attracted us to them in the first place.
That description hardly narrows the field.
Lets say The Meade is talking about the commander in chief.....could it be that after 4 years of trying to micro-manage our lives, we just want to be left along and not hear from him about his latest plan for us?
Eisenhower did mostly behind the scenes work. More managing than in-your-face control projects. I wish we had Presidents like that.
The lack of the word "another" in Meade's quote should tip you off that we were not talking about Obama.
*sigh*
another quiz from the professor. Fortunately I'm too stupid...
It can't be Obama. Golf and mandatory vacations have not aged him. But his failures have aged the American people.
She didn't say, and I didn't assume. "Ed" and I were just having our own little asides about Obama. If the subject's not specified you can't be off topic.
Eh, I could have sworn I saw "another" the first time I read the post.
psychology
Funny thing is....I thought I read "another" also. Hmmmm, we read what we expect.
Then it has to be Newt!!
I love his debating and speaking and his right wing views.
The man is annoying as hell otherwise and would get old after a while.
I thought he swallowed the word.
It's Santorum. He's regressed to looking and sounding like an unpolished thirty-year-old.
Ron Paul?
But the kids LOVE him.
I'm away from the TV so I don't know who was on the shows this morning, but I'm a former Georgian and Newt used to be my Rep. I met him in person once at a town-hall.
On TV, say, on a debate stage, makeup helps him look almost human. But up-close and in-person, his face is ruddy and corpulent. He looks like a heart attack waiting to happen.
Gingrich.
It was like he was giving the interview six months after losing, when it no longer matters how frumpy and worn he looks.
Even Newt no longer believes in Newt.
One reason, among many, that Newt was never going to be president is that he is and looks like a fat old man. Now, his face is looking weird in addition to old. I assume it is a function of how hard these guys have to work in running for president. At this point, the less we see of Newt the better. He may be able to give a good speech at the convention, if he can somehow avoid focusing on himself.
Lately Newt looks better groomed to me.
He has that same lacquered hair --every strand cemented in place-- look his wife sports.
The fact that none of us knows who it is – although we know it's not BHO – speaks volumes about our choice of Republican candidates.
Wether Newt or Mr Obama, the point, I believe stands.
"The lack of the word "another" in Meade's quote should tip you off that we were not talking about Obama."
In lieu of a substantive subject thread, which has become the norm here, Althouse has turned her blog into a childish guessing game.
It's good to be queen and rule over her flock lol.
And yes, Meade is someone no one cares about, except a few conservative lemmings.
Again, let's move on, shall we.
phx got it first. Mark said it best.
While I seldom agree with Shilo, I think he is on target on this subject.
And once again, Shiloh comes in last.
Meade: not proven
I'd miss Obama's stress on closed class words.
So few people give them their due.
Perhaps politics was better before TV. People could read about someone's ideas and about their past actions, and make a decision without being influenced by how the candidate looked. For myself, I'm generally less influenced by style than by substance, and I’m driven mad by people who are greatly influenced by someone’s style or ‘polish’.
Do you think Lincoln would have won if Americans had TV back in that time? I believe he was though an unattractive man.

Never a disappointment in that respect.
I'd only seen Santorum from the shoulders up until recently. For such a thin face (thinner now than before the campaign), he has an awfully wide body that no sweater vest can camouflage.
McCain had a facial peel before the 2008 campaign. I saw him on CSPAN2 looking like raw meat. There's no way to prove it, but I'll bet that brought on his melanoma.
So now we have to contemplate as to which Republican candidate that Meade considers unpleasant.
Personally, and I cannot speak for Meade, Saint Ricky's whine drives me straight up the wall.
I think Santorum is pretty hot.
I would do him.
He has a great smile.
tits.
Obama does not go on these shows.
Newt does.
Ron Paul looks the same as ever, like a character in Cocoon.
I forgot Rick.
I always forget Rick.
Presidential Politics is all about looking good on TV. Bald guys, fatties, shorties, ugly guys, disabled guys, guys with glasses, and guys with facial hair need not apply.
And the deeper the voice the better.
My guess is that Meade was talking about Ryan Seacrest.
The subtle reason youngers inherit their family's estate(s) is that the ability of the elders to manage those estates wanes with the years. This is true across all aspects of life and culture. Birth, youth, maturity, senility, death. The first causes the last. Each dies of the same reason. Strong families expand their estates by inheriting their children again, again and again. Newt is holding rather than inheriting, a non-expansive posture. Blacks, progressives, environmentalists and metrosexuals do likewise.
The same thing COULD have been said about BO I suppose. He hasnt got much to say, or do, except continue to drag us down into the post+capitalism realm in which we ignore the deficit. Why this hasnt sunk his own chances and produced a voter deficit is difficult for me to understand. His voters should be down around Zero.
The lack of the word "another" in Meade's quote should tip you off that we were not talking about Obama.
You forgot to take into account how dumb the commenters here are.
Also, I love this thing where there is an insult about one of the Republicans nominees and no one can agree who it is directed at because they are all such jokes.
Don't know who Ann was talking about, if not Obama, but he is the one whom I do not want to hear over the next four plus years. Period.
His sanctimonious false choices, straw men, fabrications, prevarications, and lectures have just gotten too old for me to handle. I have gotten to the point where I will mute the TV or walk out of the room when he starts up. It is going to be a long, long, election year for me, with all the money he will have to spend (along with all of his friends) to spread his face and voice across the airwaves.
Looking at him though doesn't bother me, if I am not listening to him speak. And, sure, he looks like he has aged, but we really don't know - any guy who would wear mommy jeans would not think twice about dying or tinting his hair to have the poll tested optimum amount of gray. And, yes, cut it close, as contrasted with his pictures from a couple of decades ago (like that one with Derek Bell we saw this week).
As far as looking Presidential, I would put him below Romney, Biden, and maybe Santorum, but definitely above Gingrich and Paul.

Hey! Willard calls them poppy pants. Try to stay on message please!
GBS's Professor Higgins would note that Meade is a midwesterner. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
The middle Indiana blended accent became the accepted American accent after TV took over our culture. Daniels, Romney and Santorum are all kosher speakers to midwestern ears.
But a Haley Barbour, a Herman Cain, a Rick Perry or a Newt Gingrich need not apply.
Newt also has a special grating quality that comes across in his speech which expresses that he is smarter than his lowly supporters...and boy does that backfire on him.
I could accept any of the GOP candidates voices for 4 years, except for Bachmann's.
It's not Romney - the dude is so bland only a paid Democrat operative could hate him. On the flipside, only a paid GOP operative could really love him.
Assuming he is the nominee, we're going to have to rely on Obama hatred rather than Romney love to carry the day. It should be enough.
"Obama hatred"
This blog's 24/7 conservative hatred notwithstanding, outside the blogosphere, not so much.
Indeed, you'd be surprised the (((majority))) of folk who don't live, breathe, obsess, rant/rave re: politics like blog conservatives, especially Althouse's flock, which dare I say, is a unique kind of compulsive, tribal hatred. :-P
>
Again, Your eyes are full of hate, Forty-One. That's good. Hate keeps a man alive. It gives him strength.
So row well Althouse wingers and live! :)
And after the election, I'll feel your pain!
I didn't watch the Sunday shows but BJ Clinton is really showing his age.
I think the dialogue is sufficiently understood so that we could hire a team of good-looking and pleasant-sounding spokesmen for all the politicians. They would be put on to give statements for whoever wants one put out. Most of the time they could just refer us to an earlier statement given that would still work in the current controversy.
This blog's 24/7 conservative hatred notwithstanding
The left's working definition of 'hatred' is disagreeing with them.
Callista's hair for office.
"You forgot to take into account how dumb the commenters here are."
Well, one anyway.
"Also, I love this thing where there is an insult about one of the Republicans nominees and no one can agree who it is directed at because they are all such jokes."
And did you love the way Obama was in the mix until there was clarification from Althouse? Which puts him square into the all are jokes category?
"This blog's 24/7 conservative hatred notwithstanding
The left's working definition of 'hatred' is disagreeing with them."
That or calling them stupid. Not that they dont call them both. It's far easier than trying to debate the issues.

Great idea. Tell you what. You go on ahead and pick out another blog for us all to comment at, and get started. We'll be along shortly. No need to come back for us.
"Somewhere, Gödel is smiling."
Ha ha. I'm smiling.
Althouse+Meade and the hoi-polloi!
No judgement.
In fact, think you two deserve a brain vacation from the crap, just like the rest of us.
Well I was hoping it was the GEICO lizard.
Peano?
Go to bed, honey.
And voila!
You'll wake up as maple syrup!

Very clever and perceptive, IiB. I'm also smiling.
Cons are clever like that, Astro.
So is you last name, Turf?
Or you one of those "physics" types?
Carol Herman will appreciate this.
Remember when "physics" were pills that improved your bowel movements?
They worked!
Nothing worse than being constipated.
Except maybe logorrhea?
That's like diarrhea... only on-line.
I mean REALLY.
Who is going to clean up this shit?
Penny,
(...knock, knock, knock, Penny!),
Wild guess, here: I'm thinking you're not familiar with Godel's Incompleteness Theorems nor how he demonstrated the concepts using self-referential sets.
