Great horned owls, hooting outside our house, just now.
Meade shot what is more audio than video, but you can catch a glimpse of me in the light of my iMac.

Shooting owls is frowned upon around here-
But, to each his own. Let us know how it tastes.
Sounds like Injuns.
Git the law books in a circle.
"you can catch a glimpse of me in the light of my iMac."
We take you now to directly outside the Plaza Hotel, in New York City: "Sally, is it? Oh my God, I think that's Ringo waving from the window!"
Keep your eye out for Snowy Owls, there are hundreds in Wisconsin right now, the most in many years. They may stay the winter according to the article I read. Neat.
Do these owls have a permit to hoot?
Might it be a Snowy Owl that flew down here because there aren't enough lemmings up north?
Garage beat me to it.
Does that big illuminated sign in the distance say "EDNA"?
We occasionally have some sit on our chimney and hoot.
It amplifies and sounds like they're in our living room and makes the dogs (one is a wiener dog) freak out.

With good reason. A great horned owl can pick up and carry away a little dog or cat. Be careful.
We have them roosting in the juniper tree near our bedroom. One did try to take off with our cat once. She slipped away but had some nasty puncture wounds on her back near the shoulders.
Last week while picking up rock pulled up when drain tile was installed I was surprised to see an owl on the ground not 5' from the tractor. It gave me a glaring look and hopped away. I did go back to look for it in case it was injured, but didn't find it again. I checked a bird book and think it was a short-eared owl. One of those nice surprises that contribute to my love of farming.
I see snowy owls will eat birds up to small duck size. I could use a visiting ssnowy...some dumb butt dropped 4 chickens off for us. We're used to having dogs/puppies, cats/kittens dumped off...but chickens??? They can't stay because of potential disease problems caused by chicken poop in sheep hay, and someone said they will ride the backs of sheep leaving their droppings on the wool for the shearer to wipe off and wreck the fleece.
Instead of "here chick, chick, chick" when I toss corn to the strays I'll start saying, "here snowy, snowy, snowy..."
Sorry Irene, didn't mean to steal your thunder :-)
That's okay, Garage. I got to write the part about the *lemmings.*
Watching Hooters is a national sport.
Hey Ann, I thought of you the other day as I was watching the 7up series. I've almost made it through every film. Do you know Nick Hitchon or his ex-wife? some great shots of Madison appear in several of the films.
As I type, I can hear owl(s) hooting outside, for the 2nd evening in a row. We occasionally hear owls (we are between a woods and open fields),but never this frequently before. Will have to follow that link about the snowy owls.
My Uncle Dom used to smoke White Owls.
Need cafe!
Maybe your yard has become an owl cafe.
I love the Up series.
What's wrong with angry commenters?
We can only conclude that there must be part of the ritual that the angry commenter enjoys, some small thrill in hating something and being able to voice how resentful he is of the precious time that article has robbed him of.
Snowy Owls really don't 'hoot'. They're silent, or do a shrill whistle or croak.
All owls have their own unique hoot.
The hoots in the recording are def. Great Horned Owl.
:)
Wonderful. I haven't any birds due to the stray cats I feed. It started with the neighbor who left and left the cat, now left felines chow down on the kibble. 11, by last count.
I saw one in the cemetery, on top of the flag pole, the other night as I walked home at dusk. Two or three years ago, there was a nest at the top of the hill on the street. Two eggs hatched and fledged and left.
I always wonder as I walk the dog at night: Will an owl scoop it up?
I appreciate the Monty Python reference.
We have Hoot Owls around here hooting every morning when I go down to get the paper. It's still dark at that time. I don't know if they are greatly horny or not, but they are sure noisy.
Those snowy owls are pretty!!!
Even though I live in the middle of Los Angeles, I'm lucky to have acres of open land behind my home with 2 miles of fenced in open space between me and LAX airport - no people or buildings at all. So I often see racoons, red fox, possum, red tail hawks, and also a pair of barn owls that will perch on my house. They freak me out in the early morning when they swoop suddenly overhead un-announced by any sound whatsoever. It's creepy.
I think I have the best location in the whole city. All this and a 10 minute walk to the ocean...and:
It's Friday, Friday.
Gotta get down on Friday. Everybody's lookin' forward to the weekend, weekend.
I love the Up series as well but am still trying to sort out what it all means. It wasn't even mildly scientific but many people treat it as if it's a true longitudinal study.
It's an excellent although very small window into how Britain has changed over the course of 50 years. I cannot stop watching it and wonder where all of the additional footage has gone. Like any reality show, much has been left on the floor by editors to force perspective. Whatever it is, it's a must-watch.

I have friend I often visit in Playa Del Rey. Are you near there? Lives right off Jefferson. I used to live right off Jefferson in Culver City.
E.M. Davis,
Yep, Playa Del Rey. If you have to live in a big city, but love the ocean, the mountains and a little space, this is ideal. Today I drove to the mountains to dig a foundation for friends. From the beach straight through downtown LA and to the mountains in a national forest in 40 minutes. That's what I like about this place. It really has it all.
I lived for many years in Culver City too.
Great horned owls, huh? You guys are lucky. The ones around here are lousy.
Owls are cool. So cool that they could get that geeky guy in "Watchmen" laid by the really hot barely legal chick. Yeah...That's cool.
Great horned owls are pretty impressive creatures.

Don't even try to eat one. They taste worse than bald eagle.

or become buds!
Two things I found interesting in the paper today.
Tim Cullen is mulling a run for Governor. He is miles ahead of any Dane Co candidate in my book.
Republicans want to withdraw a redistricting lawsuit. At the same time, CJ Abrahamson announces that David Prosser won't be around for oral arguments for about a month (for reasons that aren't given).
