The gesture Cain made that, he says, brought a complaint about sexual harassment.

On Greta Van Susteren's show, he spoke of an employee in her late 30s or early 40s who accused him of sexual harassment:
"She was in my office one day, and I made a gesture saying -- and I was standing close to her -- and I made a gesture saying you are the same height as my wife.  And I brought my hand up to my chin saying, 'My wife comes up to my chin.'"  At that point, Cain gestured with his flattened palm near his chin.  "And that was put in there [the complaint] as something that made her uncomfortable," Cain said, "something that was in the sexual harassment charge."
Supposedly, the woman and her lawyer asked for a "huge" settlement, but she got very little, just enough to induce her to terminate the lawsuit.

Rush Limbaugh's reaction today:
Now, we don't have any evidence of ice packs on a busted lip as we had with Juanita Broaddrick and Bill Clinton.  Yeah, Bill Clinton and Juanita Broaddrick, "Hey babe, you better put some ice on that, you're bleeding at the lip."  We don't have any of that.  This story appears to me to be a close relative of the hit job that the Washington Post is doing on Marco Rubio.  It's not a news story.  This is gutter partisan politics, and it's the politics of minority conservative personal destruction, is what you've got here.  Rubio and Cain unfit to lead, don't you see. We cannot have a black Republican running for the office of president.  We can't have one elected.  We can't have an Hispanic.

The left owns those two groups, and those two groups are gonna forever be minorities. Those groups cannot ever be seen to be self-sufficient or rising above, on their own. Those two groups are owned -- lock, stock, and barrel -- by the Democrat Party and anything good that happens to any black or Hispanic in American politics can only happen via the Democrat Party....

This is how the mainstream media keeps the Republican Party in check: They're scared to death of this kind of thing happening to them. Pure and simple. It's also why (I'm just predicting) you're not going to see too many people in the official Republican establishment rise up to Herman Cain's defense. You know, if this exact circumstance (as I just mentioned) had happened in a conservative publication, not only would the Democrats and the media be going after the women -- as James Carville did and others during the Clinton years -- they'd be going after the reporters. They'd be going after the publication. Anybody who had anything to do with the story, it would be search-and-destroy. Our side will not do that.

I won't automatically give Cain a pass just because he is a Black Republican. We'll see if there is more to the story. But Rush is right. Try to find anything on Clinton's rape of Juanity Broaddrick. There is zero doubt in my mind that Bill Clinton is a Rapist-American.

It is interesting to read about the attitudes and expectations powerful males had towards women in places like Arkansas in the mid 1970s.

The mainstream media uses this tactic far too often. I'm unfazed by these stories now, and my knee-jerk reaction is to defend the people they try to defame. And ridicule the story.

Look at the Cain scandal: a sexual harassment claim from the 90's. When sensitivity training was the vogue and making false claims was an easy way to make a few bucks.

Please!

Sexual harrassers don't do it just once. There is always a pattern. If no other credible acusations come forward, I will give Cain a pass on this. If he has a problem with touchy feely, we'll know soon.

edu...I just did a quick internet search to see what stories are out there about it (just to be safe, get around left wing and right wing filters).

As of right now, it appears there is nothing to this. He made some off the cuff remark to a lady working on his floor about the height of his wife. She sued, or demanded a large sum of money. Employer said "no, but how about if you just leave, we'll give you 3months of salary as a severence." Lady said "I'll take it".

pm317 said...

Why was he talking about her height? Seems odd without the full context and also a dumb thing to say.

Chuck66 said...

David, I say the same thing as you. A sexual harrasser does it all the time, or not at all. If we suddenly get a pattern, I will be the first to throw him under the bus.

If not, then assume he is telling the truth about this non-incidence.

This is one of the reasons (many reasons) I believed Clarence Thomas.

I am also listening to the network news spinning this story - including Fox - as regards Cain's "evolving" story.

However, in the first clip he says he did not know about any settlement, and in the second I am certain I heard him say, "He said ...," i.e., In the meantime Cain had called someone at the restaurant association and asked what happened. I also think I remember from earlier that it was stated that this "settlement" with the accuser was made after Cain left the association, which makes it quite reasonable that he did not know what they finally wound up doing about it, but just assumed that since he had not heard anything, it had gone away.

This may be a slow newsday, but really, our news media are not making themselves proud with this.

Your comment is almost self-canceling. Of course, Rubio and Cain are getting the "treatment" because of their race. The Democratic party cannot stand to lose even one percentage point of the minority vote. They'd lose every election outside of San Francisco.

And even the attack on Perry was based on race. He's a racist, you know. It's all aimed at conservatives and it's all based on race. It's transparent -- one of the few things in government that qualifies for that adjective.

Politico better put up or shut up. They fielded this story so they better pony up who is making these claims, otherwise it's nothing but a smear hit piece and a poorly calculated one at that. If this is the best that the Romney camp or the DNC has to offer, then they really failed. I'm tired of these anonymous claims against peoples reputations. It clearly wasn't a criminal act, so therefore it was civil and if Cain is claiming that it was a hand to his chin to show height and the offended party is looking for deep pockets. I would tell Cain's lawyers to put this woman on parade and tell her story and let the public decide. There is nothing there.

I don't see any reason to believe this is a Democrat hit offhand:

Democrats would have had the docs unsealed as they did with Jack Ryan.
Democrats wouldn’t have wasted this shot this early in the campaign. Now they're just inconveniencing one of a herd of primary candidates, instead of the nominee.
Gingrich doesn’t benefit; these are NOT the kind of issues he wants discussed when he’s busy rehabilitating himself as Mr. Brainiac the Ideas Guy.
Perry could plausibly assume he would pick up any alienated Cain voters before Romney would. So to that extent, the ploy might appeal. Also, the Perries have been tough-talking their resurgent campaign.
Romney has no reason to put those Cain voters back in play since they split the anyone-but-Romney vote that constitutes 70% of the GOP base. So to that extent, the ploy does not appeal. BUT, as a short term attack predicated on avoiding any embarrassing setbacks in the early primaries, it might still be attractive. Also, the lightning response from an extremely conservative women's conservative Christian group based in DC hints at a GOP insider's game, particularly since that group has no previous record of attacking other pols for their morals. Also, they are an unlikely choice for Politico to hook up with.
Paul might do it out of malicious stupidity, but neither he, Bachmann, or Santorum, let alone Johnson and Huntsman, have enough base left to pick up enough to make difference.

Mitochondri, you might want to read the stories you link to.

Here's what's actually at that link:

Herman Cain said in his speech today that the National Restaurant Association’s general counsel and the human resources department conducted an investigation into allegations about his conduct in the late-90s.

But the head of the association’s human resources department at the time said in an interview with POLITICO last week that she was unfamiliar with any complaints from female employees about Cain.

“No, I do not,” said Mary Ose, the former human resources chief, when asked if she was aware of allegations about Cain’s behavior.

The media is finding out that they can't get away with the stuff they used to get away with all of the time. They are getting a LOT of push back in their comments on things like the Rubio, Perry and Koch hit pieces. They are pulling out all of the stops... even using a claim in a headline that was never mentioned in the article for the Koch hit piece. I always make sure I mention some story they buried about Obama (like marching with the black supremacist group in the last election) so that it is at least a little painful for them to pull this stuff.

I got a huge kick out of one of the articles about Cain mentioning something about an unwanted sexual advance. Well just how the hell are you supposed to know if it is unwanted until you make it? I am sure there is some nuance missing here but usually when the language is that screwed up the concept behind it is not much better.

What I imagine sometimes is one of those round tables where you get lawyers, judges, politicians and businessmen together and they try to figure out a way for a man or woman to start up a relationship on the job (that place where we are required to be 8-12 hours a day) without subjecting themselves or their company to a law suit.

The parsing and dangling of participles would be a sight to behold.

This isn't rocket science.

TRUMAN WOULDN'T LET A FEMALE WALK INTO HIS OFFICE! Plus, he ALWAYS kept his office door open when there was a woman inside! (How come Truman knew more about gossip and office politics than you do?)

Also, Truman at some point, put a piano in his office. When women were inside ... he was at the piano, playing the keys! LOUD.

Harder to complain that a man is feeling under your skirt while music is being made by the piano. It doesn't "play" itself.

I worked at a consulting firm in the 90s. The rule there seemed to be, "If you have the nerve to bring a suit against us, we'll settle just to get rid of you." We saw it happen several times, both on racial and sexual harassment grounds. I can't emphasize how benign and neutral an environment I worked in.

My husband and his company were recently sued for wrongful termination by a middle-aged man. The guy had numerous problems, thoroughly documented, so the company refused to settle. The guy took him to court and the jury awarded a small judgment for the guy. Just because "they felt sorry for him." Not because it was justified, and the judge even said what an egregious decision it was.

All this to say, there are a lot of things that can go into the decision to complain, and a lot of reasons to settle, and none of them mean anyone actually did anything.

Rush always paints such a simplistic version of 'our side' vs 'their side'. It's like he thinks Republicans aren't human but instead perfectly bred creatures out of some sci-fi novel. While Dems are seen as the complete opposite.

That alone has to make anyone with a modicum of common sense be skeptical of most of what he says.

Sure, if you think the Republicans have better policies that's fine. But when you start making claims that 'our side' won't search and destroy then you are making a claim that your side isn't even human.

And btw let's not pretend like the press doesn't go after Democrats. Clinton had all kinds of bad press but he rose above it. Edwards too had bad press and he didn't rise above it. The press loves a scandal but to claim that they only love a scandal that involves minorities who are Republicans is being mighty selective and not looking at the large picture.

Wrong! The press actively suppressed the Edwards affair. They had pictorial evidence of his very open affair with Ms Hunter BEFORE the Iowa caucus. Open knowledge of the affair was given by caucus voters as a reason for his poor showing. His staffers had spoken to members of the press about aborting the campaign over the issue if he seemed to be winning the nomination. All of this was known and actively suppressed as of February, 2008.

The Enquirer followed and broke the story over the screams and yells of the mainstream press, who then had no choice.

Members of the Democrat chattering classes looks particularly repugnant and hypocritical in cases of sexual misconduct. The Weiner affair--a far more entertaining scandal--happened just a few months ago. The story then was that he didn't do it, and this in denial of massive evidence to the contrary. Then, when he fessed up and revealed himself (ha) as the most aggressive liar since Clinton, the story changed. Well, no laws were broken. This "scandal" was between him and his wife. Let the voters and his wife decide if it was such a deal breaker....These same people are now telling us that Cain is unfit for public life based on twenty year old allegations......Interesting choice of weapons: they play into the stereotype that Texans with prognathous jaws are racists, that Hispanics can't be trusted to tell the truth about their immigration status, and that blacks are sexually unkempt. They use a bank shot to sink Romney because of his religion. They repeat some Evangelical's objection to some outlandish facet of Romney's religion. Not that they care, of course, but the public has a right to know about what Evangelicals think about special underwear....I don't have any profound disagreements with many liberal positions. It is just that they are so unrelenting in their use of stereotypes, hypocrisy, and self approval.

Herman Cain might be guilty of awkward come-ons or not. We really don't know.

Here is what we do know:

There is almost no evidence that Cain sexually harassed anyone. Third-hand anonymous allegations are about as weak an accusation as you can get.

This doesn't mean that Cain is innocent. Maybe Cain also kicks his dog or steals his neighbor's newspaper. But there is almost no evidence that he did any of that.

Let us see actual evidence from actual accusers who can be questioned and whose veracity can be evaluated. Otherwise, drop it.

The left is remarkably agile in changing the definition of improper sexual conduct, depending on whether the accused is left (Clinton or Kennedy) or right (Thomas or Cain) or a one-time friend who becomes a target of opportunity (Packwood).

That said, it's obvious to me that the genesis of this particular allegation had to have been from a fellow Republican. This smacks of opposition research, for a bunch of reasons, but mostly because Cain would be the left's dream candidate to run against.

This does not excuse Politico's shameful double standard. But it is worth acknowledging.

Anonymous said...

Added: it's not the left that wants to knock Cain down right now. It's other Republican candidates who are alarmed at his appeal.

Mito -- I imagine it came from Romney.

Romney is my favorite of the candidates (though I certainly see his flaws). I do not criticize whichever Republican it was who did this. That's how the game is played.

Shameful news organizations of the United States must stop being lapdogs for the left, though, and must splash baseless allegations against Democrats equally haphazardly.

This latest rhetorical contortion from the sinking Cain is a thing of beauty:

"I believe I have a good sense for where you cross the line relative to sexual harassment but you have to know the lady, the individual."

Why? Is it a line you've been across often? Is it a line you can move by knowing a woman? Say, by working with them. People you have control over as the boss.

Cain should be honest for once about this thing. It's the only thing he hasn't tried.

Carol_Herman said...

Nope. The press is pretty "equal opportunity" when it comes to sex scandals!

What the GOP should have learned is that Bill Clinton survived the storm. Which sort'a indicates the temperature of the water.

As to Cain, he didn't quite achieve popularity ... and, this thing was always IN his closet! It's not as if he never heard of this woman! Or this woman didn't go and file a sexual harassment claim, that he chose to settle (just to make it go away.)

It seems keeping your good name isn't worth the money, in Cain's book.

OR? Maybe, he didn't think he'd get caught? Maybe, he thought "buying the woman off" was cheap?

Seems odd to me for a man to say he takes "the measure of a woman" by comparing her height to his wife's.

Too bad the dumb GOP choices don't exactly make for an attractive talent pool.

What's the selling point? They're conservatives? That's it?

I like Romney too, I suspect if he wins the Presidency, he won't try to overturn Obamacare though. I think he is the most reasonable and intelligent of all the candidates. Gawd, I'm watching that clip of Perry doing his drunken speech again. To think that he was the favorite for a minute, lol.

Anonymous said...

People you have control over as the boss.

Agreed, Alpha. Democratic politicians should not make sexual advances on their employees. Why do we not see allegations of such scandals -- and there have been so many -- splashed on the front pages of all manner of media? Why is that?

Carol_Herman said...

Canuck at 8:33 PM is positively on target.

Too early for this "hit" to have been done by the democraps. Unless, they're pretty sure Cain would never make it.

The whole conservative song and dance was going to be about "conservative politics." Which you're more than welcome to, anyway. Since it's not going to win a general election ... Even if Jesus, himself, ran under this banner.

Anonymous said...

Alpha, the truth will come out in a few days, Karl Rove or Romney's people will see to that.

Anonymous said...

Mito -- The president cannot overturn legislation. The president could fail to enforce it, but that would be a constitutional crisis, possibly a grave one depending on the circumstances.

If a Republican Congress undoes or re-does Obamacare, Romney will sign it. He'll have little choice, just as he had little choice in Massachusetts when he signed Romneycare.

Carol_Herman said...

"Sexual advances" in the office is nothing new!

That's why Truman was smart enough to never allow a woman to be in his office, while he was alone with her. (Save for his daughter, Margaret.)

It doesn't take long in an office for the gossip's to mention who the boss is "drilling."

Mito -- What stake does Karl Rove have in killing the chances of a Herman Cain presidency?

Are you one of the silly people who believe that Karl Rove is invested with super-political powers -- like some ghost dancer? Further, why do we never hear of Democratic campaign managers with such supreme ability, and former ones at that? Does James Carville pull the levers of power in secret?

Carol_Herman said...

Romney can't win.

But it sure is impressive how much money is behind him, pushing him to "victory."

While all it really does it let Obama win another term.

We've seen it before.

We've seen the GOP put up Bob Dole, when they wanted to limit Bill Clinton to one term.

Bob Dole fell into the mosh pit.

We are willing to toss aside quality people on little more than a rumor, and carry silky ponies on our backs through the mud because they fit our adolescent ideas of what a President should look and sound like.

It's most disappointing because it seems intelligence has no ability to break through this self-deception, even knowing how important this is. Maybe we don't really believe it is important. I doubt we would choose a kitchen appliance with less vigor and discipline.

Easy answer, 7 machos. Here, people keep going back to Bill Clinton. Who had to "face the music" over Monica. And, survived.

You'd think, since you now know that Bill Clinton won his re-election back in 1996, that separate from the sex scandal ... was an INCOMPETENT nominee from the stupid party.

Keep blaming sex scandals.

But you can't make winners out of losers.

Losers show up on election night ... While the stupid party never learns anything about picking better presidential nominees.

If there was better teamwork backstage, campaigning against Obama would be a piece of cake.

McCain showed you he was an idiot. And, couldn't do it.

And, all the 8 vying candidates you see? They're appealing to conservatives. Because that's the primary system. As if you can get leverage to win a general election from Nevada, Iowa, and New Hampshire.

What if all you get are "favorite sons?"

Conventions once had "smoke filled rooms." And, sitting among the delegates were the powers to bring foward a nominee.

Picking the right nominee meant political jobs. So there was plenty of back scrubbing.

This election has nothing to do with the 1996 election whatsoever. The economy in 1996 was on fire. We were involved in fewer military entanglements. 9/11 was not remotely even possible.

That anyone would compare the 1996 election to the 2012 election because of a wisp of a fleeting sex scandal (that will disappear by Thursday) is comical.

Mito -- Apparently, you don't even understand what you, yourself, think. Thus, I will explain your thoughts to you.

Like James Carville, Karl Rove is a former campaign manager with some cachet who frequently appears in the press to give his opinion. Opinions on politics, by their nature, are often critical of ideas and politicians. There is nothing behind the scenes involved. Further, Rove and Carville and paid handsomely for their efforts by the media they speak through.

What you have suggested, though, is that Karl Rove is secretly behind some opposition research strike against Herman Cain. You have provided no evidence. You have offered no suggestions about who would pay Rove to do so.

What you are saying, therefore, is that Karl Rove is a super-secret political agent working on his own, for his own purposes, for no monetary gain, to secretly destroy a primary candidate.

That is ridiculous. Again, if you'll simply try to imagine James Carville doing the same thing, and if you are remotely sophisticated, you will see as much.

Social interactions are the expected result of men and women working together. That's why we invented "morality rules."

It is unnatural if people did otherwise.

Cain has been a leader who leads groups by winning people over with simple, doable ideas and a likable personal style.

The interesting thing about a man like Cain is that he will also generate jealousy from the friends of the person he is using his style upon.

If a man becomes too attentive to a woman, then her close women friends will fight the man for her.

A famous sad country song complained to a run away wife, " You ran away with my best friend, and I want my friend back."

Adults are way past Sunday School manners these days.

While Herman Cain just faced his Waterloo.

As to our economy, there were significant disasters throughout the 1990's. Japan, South Korea, Brazil, and Thailand ... (who taught us the word "Baht" back in 1992) ... has always been rearing its head.

Sometimes investors make money.

Sometimes investors get clipped.

As to Herman Cain, he KNEW there was a woman or two ... who sued him for workplace sexual harassment. He should'a spent more time studying how Harry Truman handled his reputation ... by NEVER be alone with a woman in his office. (Save for his daughter, Margaret.)

What brings these stories out into the daylight, if so few people are really even tuning in the debates?

As to 1996 ... You can probably bet, ahead, that the nominee will be worse than Bob Dole. And, McCain. And, everybody will wonder how Obama can win, again.

While, if you're paying attention, you'll notice some nice people couldn't get any traction.

And, Michele Bachmann managed to already fizzle out.

Politics remains a strange business. People like Ed Rollins, and James Carville need to choose very carefully ... because they want to stand at the center of power.

If Cain can survive, it is GOOD that this came out now. Earlier is better for such issues. He has an opportunity to show how he works in a political crisis. If he can manage through this and stay on top of the polls, it's further evidence he deserves to be there. If this sinks him he probably was the flavor of the month after all.

Cain's Message May Be Up in Smoke
By Ron Fournier

Herman Cain's campaign manager says the sexual harassment story has run its course, but he may be blowing smoke.

Mark Block's body langauge and defensive rhetoric at a 2012 campaign forum Tuesday belied his fear that the former pizza company CEO may be knocked off message at a critical time for Cain's GOP presidential campaign.

At the National Journal's 2012 Election Preview event in downtown Washington, Block repeatedly ducked this simple but significant question: Can you guarantee that no more damaging information about Cain's past will emerge?

"I think the statement would be that Mr. Cain has never sexually harassed anybody. Period. End of story," Block said, repeating the campaign talking points about a Politico story describing sexual harassment charges in Cain's past.

Block mentioned almost in passing that a radio talk show receptionist in Iowa thought Cain's comments were "inappropriate." With no more context than that, audience members did not know whether Block was referring to the Politco story or a new allegation. Only member of the overflow audience shook his head during Block's answer and whispered, "Holy crap."

Continued Block: "If we have to spend every hour every day responding to these ridiculous accusations it will take us off message. So my statement stands ... ." No harassment. Ever. Period.

And yet, the panel moderators asked him twice more: Are there any more skeletons in Cain's closet?
--------------------------------------------------------------------

The original story.

At the end of the day, this story is a function of the role of political blogs--May or may not be true. Who cares? Everyone gave bill clinton a pass for getting his cock sucked in the white house on the taxpayers dime; everyone gave the reverend jackson a pass for fathering bastard children.

this kind of story is the digital analogue of cable news--provides fuel to keep the fires burning for 48 hours until the next story comes up

Its all bullshit

We have to remember that Mito-Allie, Roesch/Voltaire, and J all follow the Obama/OWS rule when it comes to sexual assaults and rape -- which is that they cover it up and support and endorse it when done by members of their own party.

Meanwhile, as for Ann Coulter, once again she nails the fact that typical white liberals like Mito-Allie, Roesch/Voltaire, and J feel very proprietary towards minority communities and claim ownership of these people, punishing and encouraging physical violence against any minority person who dares get uppity towards their white liberal massas.

Mito-Allie, as an example, is threatened by a successful black man. She knows she and her children are failures and Cain is a success; this offends her, because her white skin in her mind makes her superior. Thus she must punish Cain and spread lies about him in order to make up for her own failures.

I think it means that Mito-Allie, whio endorsed and supported John Edwards's lies and cheating on his wife, insisting that the tabloids were irresponsible for reporting anything bad about an Obama Party member and supporting the mainstream media for suppressing it, is letting her racist side show.

Poor little Mito-Allie. She shows what happens when racist failures like herself are confronted with a successful black person -- they get all gossipy and mean, trying to bite at the ankles of those who years of Democrat rhetoric have taught her are inferior to her and a threat to her white-skinned daughters.
