MayBee, I've kicked that possibility around, but I'm pretty sure that these were annuals, and delphiniums are (supposedly) perennials. I never had much luck with the few delphiniums I planted. Two years, and that was it.
Delphinium exaltatum seems like a match, but on my plant, the flower seems to be joined to the stem. Every delphinium photo I look at shows a little stem-type part that holds the flower away from the main stem.

Just because we're used to seeing these things, it doesn't make them any less miraculous. I've never thought of God as being supernatural except in the sense that he created what we call nature.
@Chip, fritillaria are quite real, and this is an unusually lovely specimen. I haven't seen a fritillary in years, which is unfortunate. I tried to grow some at my old house, but without any luck. After three or four years I gave up.
