"TV Ad Spending By Special Interest Groups Tops $1 Million in Wisconsin Judicial Election."

According to the Brennan Center, as of March 29th. This means that only 18% of the spending has come from the candidates.
Through Sunday, March 27th, three special interest groups had spent more than $1.14 million on TV... Leading the pack is the liberal Greater Wisconsin Committee, which, beginning March 18th, has spent more than $575,000 on blistering attack ads targeting Justice Prosser.... [T]he conservative groups Wisconsin Club for Growth and Wisconsin Manufacturer & Commerce’s WMC Issues Mobilization Council, Inc. have also poured money into the race on pro-Prosser TV ads. Through Sunday, March 27th, the Club for Growth had spent approximately $415,000, and the WMC Issues Mobilization Council about $150,000. These numbers are expected to rise substantially in the final week before Election Day: According to the Brennan Center, 42 percent of all judicial election TV spending in 2010 occurred in the last week of the election season.
Consider that in this race, the candidates both opted into a public financing scheme that capped them each at $300,000.

UPDATE: The Brennan Center's numbers as of March 31st show 4 special interest groups spending more than $2.16 million. Greater Wisconsin Committee has now spent more than $993,000 on TV ads for Kloppenburg. Three groups supporting Prosser have spent more than $1.16 million.

Those Democrats are bitterly determined to keep those campaign funds extracted from public employees flowing into their coffers.

It's a fight to the death!

To keep extracting ever higher tribute from the fool taxpayers who didn't have the foresight to land a public sector job. What chumps!

I've been doing a little reading...

It appears 'ol Klopperhead is quite the piece of work.

It appears she's lost every election she ever ran (correction welcome).

It appears there is a very good reason why.

The phrase " a yellow dog Democrat" was a boast that the person would vote for the Democrat even if he/she was a yellow dog. The phrase now morphs into " a Kloppenburg Democrat" with the same basic meaning.

The commercial about Prosser speaking negatively about ol' Shirley is all over the Milwaukee TV market.

What level of hanky panky will be reached on April 5th? Polls that open, but don't have ballot boxes or supplies? Long waits for someone to find the key to open the polling station? The cops aren't going to help you.

While IF David Presser gets bounced; and the 77-year-old Shirley, the chief justice wins her bout with the conservatives on her court ... currently 5-2, or 4-3, what makes you think this turns into a success?

The whole country is watching.

People, as a general rule, don't watch so much TV, anymore.

And, what if David Presser, with name recognition, and a title: "Yes, A Bitch." This will do wonders for democraps?

Oh, you don't think we're gonna see a slew of books? Books only came out on Nixon?

All joking aside, this is war "by other means." The liberals have bared their teeth, barked and growled. What makes anyone think democrats will not do the necessary to win? I, for one, await the disclosure of what "the necessary" consists of. Don't forget, Sumter, April, 1861: if necessary--i.e., they don't get what they want--they will shoot. The ones that don't know enough to keep their mouths shut have already said so. CW II is not just around the corner--it's already here.

Rick Esenberg was on Charlie Sykes 4/1/11 hour 1 discussing some of this. Mr Esenberg also placed some of that content to digital print here: http://www.nationalreview.com/bench-memos/263305/defeating-governor-walker-any-means-necessary-rick-esenberg

The most intriguing part, to me, is the Caperton type conflict.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caperton_v._A.T._Massey_Coal_Co.

How can a judicial candidate campaign on defeating a law that isn't a law, get huge special interest assistance (directed at defeating that law), and expect to sit on the court to rule an opinion on said law? Ann Althouse already covered Kloppenburg's statement on her desire to stand against executive overreach here: http://althouse.blogspot.com/2011/03/wisconsin-supreme-court-candidate.html Perhaps, Kloppenburg knows she will have to recuse herself. She and the PACS may know this one case is but a tree in the forest for the anti-textualists. If only she could win.

This should be interesting. IMO, our best path, as a nation, includes both Kloppenburg and Obama losing the next elections.

The demonstrations in Madison showed that these people have no idea how much of their purposes--and the means to achieving those purposes--they are putting on public view. Shades of Bush vs. Kerry all over again. Now the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth's shoes are on the other feet. Check to see if Wisconsin's voting machines were made by contributors to the Democratic Party, as Ohio's were made by Diebold in 2004.

Yes Bart, clearly, spending money on television ads is an attempt to buy a spot on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. An election...with TV ads?! No way!

Also, this post is wrong. The newest figure puts spending at over $2 million, which is absolutely insane, especially for an election like this one. Spending is actually fairly even, too.

FLS--doubtful on the voting machines. WI uses a primitive form of voting, where you draw a line from the candidate you want to the other side of a ballot. It's really, really bizarre.

"Ren: He who votes decides nothing; he who programs the voting machines decides everything."

So who's the programmer we can blame for having Obama? Or can we assume that a majority of voters voted him into office? Is it only a rigged election when a Repub wins? I recall the ultrageniuses at Kos, DU, and the like were screeching that the Diebold fix was already in before the election- in 2006. After election night, that meme died REAL fast.

And while I'm at the questions, what's the multiplier for economic effect from dollars spent on judicial election campaigning?

More evidence of the stupidity of public financing and spending limits on candidates. It's far preferable for the candidates to be presenting their own ads. At least they are directly accountable for those.

Walker and the WI GOP have been a complete fail at the tactical level. Not only was it stupid to allow this controversy to drag on for three weeks before severing and passing the bill, was there some reason they couldn't have waited until after the Supreme Court election to bring up the bill to begin with? If Prosser wins and they ultimately succeed, it will be through luck, not competence.

It's amusing to see the old leftist meme about Diebold, who make all the ATM machines all over the country. I assume you don't use ATMs as they can be reprogrammed to steal your money.

The Swift Boat vets have also been slimed by the Democrats considering they were all there in Vietnam at the same time when Kerry did his three months. The one guy who backed up Kerry's story turned out to have been somewhere else at the time.

I see that my last post didn't make the cut, so I'm trying again in short space:

Any bets on union goons showing up at the polling places? I don't trust public union-member police to be--ah--effective guardians of the democratic process, so I'm wondering if Walker has the guts to call out the National Guard to constitute what one might call a "presence" at the polls. It would raise a Democratic stink, but what doesn't these days?

The unions may see that with their existence at stake, what have they to lose.

Crimso said...

Well, Voltimand, on another thread MadisonMan said that an AFSCME person approached him at his home, called him by name (presumably not "MadisonMan"), and upon being informed that MM had already voted, wanted to know how he voted. I may be remembering this story wrong, but it was yesterday or the day before that he posted it. My response as to how I voted would have been "With my shotgun in mind." Or "The way Diebold made me vote." Or better still "I voted against Kloppenburg. Four times!"

One of the things I don't understand is why the RNC is sitting this out. Isn't the head of the RNC the former leader of the Republican Party in Wisconsin? You'd think he's worry about his legacy.

In the long run, though, regardless of how this election plays out and regardless of the recalls it's the public unions and the Democrats who are on the wrong side of history, and who are ultimately doomed.

Spending money is good for the economy. It lets otherwise hungry ad execs earn enough to make mortgage payments. Can't fool me.

While ISHTAR not only had a stellar cast. (Wasn't Dustin Hoffman in that film?) I can still remember the billboards. But I didn't go.

And, all the expensive ad campaign did was dig a bigger hole for the studio to lose money.

What evil lurks behind the scenes, for the April 5th election?

Oh, yeah. If Kloppenburg was really ahead, she'd be much more circumspect. Like the "wise Latina."

If the democraps could order rain for April 5th, they'd be seeding the clouds, now.

Judicial elections in Wisconsin are ostensibly non-partisan. Political parties cannot field nor directly support candidates. Hence, we get tons of ads by third-parties but none from Republicans or Democrats.

"The candidates both opted into a public financing scheme that capped them each at $300,000."

God, Ann, this statement is such fucking bullshit.

The candidates "opted" into a public financing scheme that GUARANTEED them $400,000 taxpayer dollars with which to purchase their judgeship - which then pays them $1.53 million dollars.

It is unconscionable and immoral that politicians and crooked judges are stealing from the fucking taxpayers to finance their goddamn re-election campaigns.

These judges are fucking thieves and if there is any justice in the world they'll one day pay dearly for their crimes against us taxpayers.

Although the comments above by rmblam in re: caperton are interesting, I think that Kloppenburg could recuse herself with no problem. If Sumi rules against the law, and the case is then appealed directly to the Supreme Court, wouldn't a 3-3 split in the WI SC uphold the decision of Sumi? Thus, all that needs to be done is to get Prosser off the court. There is no need for Kloppenburg to participate in the decision. Is this analysis correct?

Why not think if Koppenburgeroo actually lands on the Wisconsin supreme's a whole can of whoop ass doesn't break open?

First, would recounts be necessary of the voting is "close?"

And, if this issue is HOT around this country, especially in states that don't have right-to-work laws ... whose to say that there isn't another way around this turkey?

Governor Walker seems to hold up to the stress of "staying the course."

Why are we assuming the unions win, if they win on April 5th?

You know, I saw Rose Bird tossed off the California Supreme's. People voted her off.

Exactly how does getting people angry and all riled up work for politicians? It worked for Nancy Pelosi? REALLY?

Isn't Althouse supposed to look at these facts and tell us how horrible it is that Kloppenburg is being supported by folks w/ political motives?

Also, isn't she supposed to note that the folks supporting Kloppenburg are deplorable because they're telling people what Prosser has said and done?

And, of course, Althouse is supposed to note that it's confusing when the folks supporting Kloppenberg don't run ad that show a damaged door panel, cuffs on a door knob, chalk on a monument, etc?

I don't get it? Where is the anti-Kloppenburg, pro-Prosser angle in this post?

Considering that English and colonial courts had been making law from the bench since roughly 1200, this would have been a truly radical departure. In fact, law was made from the bench in every state but the civil law Louisiana.
