"I want to be free."
From yesterday's Tea Party/counter-Tea Party protest. I heartily agree with this sign, but which side was he on?

I really only started reading political blogs in the last couple years, and this is a problem I've been surprised to discover frequently in the comment sections. I often read somebody's angry comment rant, and honestly can't figure out which side they're on, because you can't tell from anything in the content of their comment.
wv: exode. The third pole of a battery: anode, cathode, and exode.
The sign-wielder can't be the union-dem side, because that would mean having to show up for solidarity, etc and that ain't 'freedom'.
Eschewing your God given individual rights for (man-made) group rights is a self-sellout.
He's in the US, meaning he is as free as he will ever get.
"I want to be free"... from the constraints of reality? I say pro-Union side, where being free means being free from the consequences of economic turmoil, common good be damned.
You think it is the bird that is free. Wrong. It is the flower.
I would assume he's equating freedom with certain people having a really good deal versus the majority of people who don't have it that good.
If he were counter-tea party, his sign would read "I want to be free to take my neighbors' income".
He's in the US, meaning he is as free as he will ever get.
I'm sorry, but I don't think we're that free anymore. The level of debt enslaves us econmically. And all the laws that restrict my choices limit my individual freedom.
A new reality has hit our country. We're not rich or that free anymore. Deal with it.
Counter Tea Party based upon his shabby ripped up clothing.
Tea Party people generally dress themselves in clothing that shows respect not only for themselves but also respect for the occasion of attending a public event, such as a Tea Party rally.
Respect for themselves, respect for others, respect for their country, respect for the principles of the Constitution are the hallmarks of the Tea Party.
This man doesn't even respect himself enough to wear clean clothing when he is out in public
He actually meant "I want free stuff."
"I'm as free as a bird now, and this bird you cannot change..."
He's a progressive liberal. The evidence is his signage and his hat. The old school Wisconsin Progressive libs were descendants of the European 48ers who used to slogan around the phrase "Freedom is Mine".
Plus his cap looks almost
phrygian.

Sure it is:

We shout "shame" in the vain hope that some of you might find a little bit of it in what you say and do.
Perhaps La Althouse will deign to create a survey about Marilyn Davenport. Somehow, I doubt it.
@ G
Your link doesn't work, so I have no idea what you are trying to say.
How about instead of mindlessly "shouting" Shame, you try to talk and persuade.
I would not negotiate with my child when she was throwing a temper tantrum, why should I pay any attention to your temper tantrums?
Grow up.
I wouldn't venture a guess but is he scalping tickets there?
The content of the sign would indicate a Tea Party sentiment, but for lefties "War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength."
Counter tea-party? Only if he doesn't really get it.
Respect for themselves, respect for others, respect for their country, respect for the principles of the Constitution are the hallmarks of the Tea Party.
So what do you think of this guy then?
Good catch, Martin.
Which side is the sign carrier on?
His own.
If you go to the flickr page and click on the enlargement, look closely at the two tickets in his right hand. What he's saying in his own enigmatic style is that he paid too much for tickets to see The Decemberists' - the band with a wintry name and a bandleader who confesses "slavish love" for Morrissey, England's king of the bleak and tongue-in-cheek, who play Overture Hall April 19.
He should have got them for free.

"Temper tantrum?" Hardly.

The first few sentences:
"This afternoon, Marilyn Davenport sent an email to fellow Orange County Republican elected officials, apologizing if anyone was offended by her depicting President Barack Obama as an ape--while also blasting the "liberal media" for reporting the story.
"'I simply found it amusing regarding the character of Obama and all the questions surrounding his origin of birth," Davenport wrote. "In no way did I even consider the fact he's half black when I sent out the email.'"
The article goes on to describe her as a Tea Party activist. Note, please, that she doesn't deny what she did.
Please explain how this ignorant and/or racist behavior fits your description of the "hallmarks of the Tea Party." And if it doesn't, please have the honesty to admit it.
So what do you think of this guy then?
I think there are idiots in every group.
I think that racial remarks about Obama are beyond the pale and people who do those things need to be ostracized from the group.
I think that there are plenty of other reasons to dislike Obama.
I think that the Tea Party and Conservatives DO police their own by censure.
I have seen zero evidence of similar disapprobation from those on the Left. Where are the voices condemning the actions of those on the Left who commit mayhem, violence and shout down the free speech of others.
When I see any of you condemn the racist signs about Condoleezza Rice, Clarence Thomas or the movies about killing Bush or the signs comparing him to Hitler.....then we can talk.
Until then you are nothing more than a mindless drone spewing mindless talking points and are hypocrites.
@G....why don't you start your own blog...then you could pontificate to your heart's content. Why should Althouse facilitate you?
@Garbage: Calling Obama a "Lying African" is racist? WHat if the sign-wearer believes Obama was born in Kenya?
but which side was he on?
The "liberal" free speech side. And thanx for asking ...
I think he meant:
I want free fill in the blank...
Please explain how this ignorant and/or racist behavior fits your description of the "hallmarks of the Tea Party."
Hysterical.
This person represents the Tea Party, but when death threats against elected Republicans and their families happen, those are lone wackos.
Watching you ignorant people in action is comical.
I peg him as anti-Tea Party based upon his fashion sense. heh heh
For some, being free means being free from decisions, free from responsibility, and free from the consequences of their actions.
With that goal in mind, I can understand how some might see a large and expanding government as making them more "free".

Which side was the one doing the shout down yesterday? I forget.
thanks and take care
I want to be free too.
From my mortgage, car payments, health payments...
Then the alarm goes off, I wake up and find out I'm not 10 anymore.
chickelit, one inane deflection deserves another ...
ie I will defend to the death, Joe (((you lie))) Wilson makin' a fool of himself at Obama's State of the Union speech.
Hey, Reps just can't help themselves, eh. :)
take care, blessings
Don't let yourself fall under the tyranny of sign support. Even canon fodder gets a monument. But you - nothing.
It may have to do with this whole Rehabilitating Lochner: Defending Individual Rights against Progressive Reform thing.
For most, freedom is a a fleeting rush of fear, a faint - but recognized - scent on the wind.
It feels like falling,
impossible to sustain and a relief when it's passed.
But to the free it feels like the sun in April.
Counter.
The Lefties always say they are supporting things for everyone that turn out to be things that are only supposed to apply for them - freedom, equal rights, etc.
PC I see the court jester of deflection is back.
Mom must be cleaning out the basement.
I want to be free too...from the union choke-hold on my monthly paycheck and their endless list of erroneous and bullshit e-mails.
The schmuck with the "I want to be free" sign should be sent over to Iran and have him picket in front of the mullah's palace. See how long he'd retain his freedom and his head? Jerks like this guy should kiss the ground and be thankful that they're here in the good old USA?
Hey G, I'm not tracking here, why don't you help me out. Why is a picture of Obama's head on a chimp's body "racist". Isn't the current scientific belief that we all descended from apes? So...how's that racist? Also, how does this compare with the 8 years of "Chimpy McHitler" pictures of Bush that we were treated to in his presidency? (Surely you haven't forgotten that? Was that racist too? I don't recall anyone claiming that back then. These constantly shifting standards are so confusing, help me out please.

"I heartily agree with this sign, but which side was he on?"
Depends on what he mean by "free". If he follows with "... to make you finance my pensions" or "... from financing your pensions."
Somehow this got lost when i posted it before, but I'd still like an answer:
