2 new anti-Prosser/pro-Kloppenburg ads... presented for discussion purposes here.

In these last few days before the April 5th Wisconsin Supreme Court election, third party ads dominate. Here are 2 that were put up on YouTube today by a group called GreaterWisComm. I got to the first one via Dave Weigel, who doesn't express any opinion other than that the ad uses video of "Prosser looking like Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon." The ad exploits the incident, which we talked about here, in which Prosser, in private, called Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson a "bitch." The video looks like it comes from long ago when Prosser was a state legislature.

It's up to the viewer to figure out what the context of that is, but obviously, it plants doubts and stirs up emotions.

The next one I discovered after clicking through to the YouTube user's page. It's quite long and begins with cheerful music and happy images of the recent protests here in Madison. Purported misdeeds of the Republicans are cited, Prosser is linked to the Republicans, and his opponent JoAnne Kloppenburg is presented as a political solution:

Again, it's a confusing ad. It does a good job of putting a happy face on the protests. Where's the corresponding ad that makes the protests look nightmarish and portrays the protesters as intent on overturning the results of the last election by installing Kloppenburg on the court?

Ads like this are deplorable, but they probably work, and with third parties putting them up, the candidate has deniability.

At this point, all this shows is that Wisconsinites are fucking nuts. To get this frothy about judicial nominees when you know the fix is in to put in Kloppenburg for the sole purpose of having a leftard in union back pocket. Disgusting.

They've tried to smear him in every possible way because they really don't have anything substantive against him.

Read this: http://ow.ly/4rC1s

That pretty much destroys a previous smear attempt.

Prosser will have my vote and I'll be doing everything I can to get out the vote for him on Tuesday.

At an art exhibition two women were staring at a painting entitled, "Home for Lunch".

The painting was of three naked black men, sitting on a park bench. What was unusual was that the men on both ends of the bench had black schlongs, but the man in the middle had a very pink tallywhacker. The two women were standing there, staring at the picture, scratching their heads and trying to figure this out. The artist walked by and noticed the women's confusion. "Can I help you with this painting?" he asked.

"Well, yes" said the one woman. "We were curious about the picture of the black men on the bench. Why does the man in the middle have a pink schwantzstucker?"

"Oh," said the artist. "I'm afraid you've misunderstood the painting. The three men are not African-Americans, they're coal miners, and the fellow in the middle went "Home for Lunch."

As an outside observer:

The first one is just a hatchet job; I think it gets dismissed out of hand.

The second video is well done. The problem is it has a fatal flaw.

It opens up showing how "peaceful" the rallies were, and shows that large union banner.

Most people, I believe know the protest were not peaceful, and that union is threatening businesses.

Therefor, the entire ad comes off as disingenuous.

What about the one taped by the abuse victim, or isn't that one getting any air time?

Why should the protests be an issue in the election of a State Supreme Court Justice?
Has Kloppenberger come out in support of them?

foxtrot said...

Again, the pro-Kloppenburg clan has nothing substantive to say about their candidate's credentials.

But then again, when your candidate resembles the walking dead more than a judicial candidate, what can you say about her?

This state will be in a world of financial hurt if this flighty absent-minded puppet gets behind the bench.

foxtrot said...

Geoff says:

"Has Kloppenberger come out in support of them?"

Considering the unions in WI endorse her, because she will have (and more than likely use) her voice in overturning the budget bill, she might as well be supporting them.

There is no way that that ad is confusing. Althouse is a liar to say that it is a confusing ad.

And, for some reason Althouse tells us that it's deplorable to talk about what Prosser has done and said.

"Prosser is linked to the Republicans, and his opponent JoAnne Kloppenburg is presented as a political solution:"

And, Prosser is linked to the Rs because he linked himself to them. If Althouse was truly concerned about keeping politics out of this election she'd be presenting Kloppenburg as the *judicial* solution (to be sought via the election process, as specified by WI law) to Prosser's self-linking to the Rs.

But, no. Althouse thinks it's deplorable for folks to be informed about Prosser's background. Instead, folks should be shown images of chalk on monuments and a wood door w/ a broken panel. That's the important stuff in this election.

The democracy Althouse favors is frightening, especially "from a law prof."

James said...

What about the one taped by the abuse victim, or isn't that one getting any air time?

That ad is running in the Milwaukee market. The election will not be determined by Madison but by the voters in other areas of the state. Because Althouse focuses on Madison its easy to form the mistaken impression that what's occurring in Madison is reflective of the rest of the state.

So what is important in this election for you? For the public to ignore every last stupid thing that the left has done here in Madison in the past month and a half? The 14's flight from the state? The psuedo-civility of the unions?

The left knows Floppenburg is like putty in their hands, a sheep and posterchild for victimologist liberalism.

Okay, a long time ago, when discussing American presidential election politics, I remember reading that "Americans don't pay attention until after Labor Day. And, then they make up their minds. Most people don't change their minds because they see a bombardment of political ads."

I might also add that TV viewership, in general, is down. So all those ads? What if the negative effects were cumulative?

If the unions were really ahead ... and Frau Kloppenburg had the numbers showing her victorious ... You wouldn't see this stuff. She'd float about it. And, she'd call Justice David Prosser "Mr. Peepers."

No humor? No victory.

Meanwhile, more than Wisconsin cheese is on the line April 5th. To the point where I think polls will be closed. Because union henchmen will keep buildings off limits. There won't be "enough ballots." And, lines will wind around the streets. Could happen.

"Dirty Tricks" isn't just for Nixon anymore.

Hugh Hewitt was right. In 2004, he said if enough Americans voted, the election couldn't be stolen.

Oh, and I saw the place to count votes will be in LaCrosse. Because it's a democratic enclave. (I'm learning more about cities in Wisconsin every day.)

foxtrot,

The public doesn't need to ignore the stupid things libs have done. But, someone needs to find Kloppenburg linking herself to folks who write on monuments, overwhelm police officers*, and break a panel in a door. Otherwise such occurrences are, by definition, irrelevant.

If you're going to play naive to Kloppenburg's pro-protester/union, anti-Walker sentiment, which you know damned well is there. There are more Kloppenburg signs per square mile in Madison than any other area in the state.

Also, my TA union at UW, as well as many other belligerent union factions in the state, endorse her. If you're going to call my reasoning stupid, then I should call the liberals' accusations about the Walker and Koch relationship equally absurd. Deal?

Videos/ads like these, especially ones found exclusively on YouTube, simple reinforce the previously held position of the viewer. They are not persuasive at all. God help Wisconsin, whichever way the vote goes. The ugliest probably hasn't been revealed yet.

So, Shirley Abramason is 77 years old. And, has been re-elected four times. One of the oldest bats to serve as a chief justice. With a liberal agenda. On the Wisconsin Supreme Court, but she's outflanked by conservative justices.

She also, according to an article up at National Review Online, by Brian Bulduc (sp?) ... states that in conferences she's given the finger to Prosser. (So, the "you are a bitch" comment was in RETALIATION FOR THE "FAMOUS FINGER OF FATE" award.)

Women like Abrhamson climbed high. But when they tumble down ... what if they make it nearly impossible for other women to ever climb to the top?

How did Shirley get ahead? True, she earned her law degree way back in the 1950's ... before Civil Rights came along.

(And, I remember Sandra Day O'Connor, graduating 2nd in her Stanford class ... but all she was offered was a secretarial job. She stood head and shoulders, in my opinion, above Rehnquist.)

But what do we have now? "The Wise Latina?" When she was confirmed I had read that "she has diabetes." Which hopefully means she won't be on the court when she is 77.

Shirley?

Well, now we know what's going on.

And, ya know what? I'm not betting a dime on the old lady.

Carol_Herman said...

Here's a guess. I don't think anyone will offer Shirley Abrhamson a dime for her memoirs. But if David Prosser is denied a fair election, come April 5th; whose to say his story dies?

Again, this chief justice, Shirley Ambramson, spent a year looking for a lefty who'd vie for Prosser's seat. And, she found this in Kloppenberg. (After a year of fruitless searching.)

Are we watching the "nuclear option?"

If so, there's a book deal ahead. That lands before November 2012's election.

Of course, if David Prosser wins he can't write about his court experiences.

Didn't Bork write a book?

Michael K said...

I don't think that ad is very effective. It ties Kloppenburg to the protests and you would have to be Rip Van Winkle to not know it is about unions. That ad looks to me that Kloppenburg = unions.

I wouldn't even worry about except to make sure you go out and vote if you're a Wisconsin resident.

Liberals don't do special elections because a large percentage of their slack jawed shock troops are generally ill informed and don't pay attention.

Prosser will be reelected and the Republicans will come out ahead in the recall effort.

I'm watching "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," when I find the same eerie feeling coming from Madison, Wisconsin.

If the people of Wisconsin are so dumb they can watch all this without being sickened by the crass, anti-democratic behavior of the Democrats in your state and the thuggish behavior of the unions.

If this is "Midwestern Values" the country is in bigger trouble than I thought.

Steve Koch said...

I wonder if Walker would have been wiser to reduce the public union rights after the supreme court election and the redistricting process. He had two years to get it done, right?

Doing the teacher layoffs would have made it clear that Wisconsin has a budget problem.

Walker is a fighter but it is not clear that he is an intelligent tactician.

Prosser just lost one of his co-chairmans, who switched and decided to endorse Kloppenburg. Of course, no mention from Althouse on this--god forbid she even make a moderate attempt to portray both sides of the story.

The reasons for the change of heart? In short: Prosser is an asshole.

Anne M Ford said...

If Abrahamson is the most respected, than I am Santa Claus.
But aside from that, didn't we have an election in November in which the liberals said we had no chance of winning, and we turned this state from blue to red. I will be voting on Tuesday, and I fully expect the liberals to whining and crying for weeks starting Tuesday night. I will not back down from this fight. And I have a feeling the voters in Wisconsin are not afraid of the bullying either.

Anne,
No one said Walker had no shot of winning. In fact, he was ahead in the polls for months. I don't know what bizarre, conspiracy-filled world you're living in, but it's clearly not the real world.

Sidenote: When this election is over, I am going to laugh at you and watch you complain.

Chase said...

The reasons for the change of heart? In short: Prosser is an asshole.

And Kloppenberg is a cunt.

A slimy cunt, a morally bankrupt asshole..

And so is anyone who votes for her.

When she was given the opportunity in the debates to distance herself from the absolute worst of all of the ads - the one comparing Prosser to child molesters - she would not do so. That alone is despicable and of the lowest character. No one like that deserves to be on any court.

Kloppenberg is scum, a lowlife. The same for anyone who votes for her.

Anonymous said...

Why are ads like this deplorable? Because they are manipulative? Because you disagree with them?

Because they are one-sided? That wouldn't make sense. They are supposed to be one-sided, that's why they are made.

the first ad isn't effective. it just makes you wonder if abrahamson is a bitch. she sure looks like one.

The second ad is not so much confusing as incoherent. It rails against the politicization of the court while making the April 5th vote explicitly political.

Carol_Herman said...

It's free speech. Ads don't have to be accurate. They once supported a whole lifestyle culture along Madison Avenue, in New York City. Many of those firms are now defunct. And, many of those ad execs never did find jobs of equal quality.

Advertise all you want!

Location, location, location, still counts. And, Prosser actually has "location." He is there.

the 77-year old bat, who got lucky and made it to the top of the Wisconsin supreme's 4 times in a row ... was getting elected when "women got an advantage."

You'd be surprised how that "advantage" tanks on ya.

"The wise Latina, and Kagan, don't count, because they're Obama's picks. And, the US senate has not flipped in favor of the republicans.

Wisconsin?

Predictions?

Don't believe what you hear. But pay attention. Because who says when you go to vote you won't see computer screens without a paper trail?
