At the Sunset Café...

... you can speak with subtlety....

P1010460

... or intensity....

P1010500

(2 stages of the same sunset, viewed from a jetty on the Mississippi River, in Pepin, Wisconsin — which is where the Little House on the Prairie was.)

I saw Winter's Bone today and I think it's the best movie of the year so far.

Anybody else given this gem a try?

You can speak with subtlety or intensity, but I don't think Althouse ever lets you speak with Chinese characters, especially when you're spamming.

If you get out to San Clemente, try the Sunrise Cafe, right on the main drag (El Camino Real). Of course, you might be better advised to sit inside and avoid the pigeons (Nasty flying tree rats!) roaming around the outdoor tables.

Despicable Me is an awesome movie.

I think that we should send Althouse to Despicable Me.

I like how even when it's in a photograph, it can be difficult to stare at the sun; I feel these little shivers in my eyes, when I look right at the sun in that second photo.

No, Althouse. You're wrong about that.

You know, as annoying as these spammers are, they are still less annoying than Lonewacko. At least when they stop by the whore out their websites, they don't insult us first. :)

If that second shot was down in the Delta, it would scream, 'sultry'.

Ann, as Blanche DuBois ("Ah have always relied on the kindness of strangers")? Can't see it. Maybe Maggie, the Cat.

Little Snot-Nose on the Prairie was the Jersey Shore of its time.

Well the sunrise cafe might have some moments...

Hey, if Meadhouse drove north through Fountain City, that means they drove by my spot on the river! Sorry I missed you both.

I spent yesterday sealing plastic barrels for use with the dock we'll be building in 2 weeks. The horseflies bit me at frequent but random intervals until I left. Some of the barrels had solvent residue that -combined with the horsefly bites- will doubtless turn me into a superhero, Horsefly Man, Protector of Trailer Trash, River Rats, and The American Way.

But I fear Flyswatter Man.

Yes - Ma, Pa, and the rest just lay on their backs in the wagon getting their tan on across the prairie. Occasionally they'd get into a fist fight with an Indian after Pa would seduce one of the squaws in his makeshift hot-tub and Ma would curse out the chief to his face. And when Pa played the fiddle, everyone knew it was time to battle the beat, all night long if that's what it took. Good times.

Jason speaks truth about Winter's Bone. I just saw it last Thursday. Fantastic.

Incidentally, probably the best female role of many years.

Pepin was a very famous French/Frank name. Pepin was the king of the Franks in the early 700s. He allied his kingdom in southern France with a Pope in Rome that ask him to come and defeat the Lombard occupation of northern Italy that was threatening the Pope. Pepin did so and then surrendered the conquered lands in northern Italy back to the Pope. It was called The Donation of Pepin and later called the Papal Estates. Pepin's son, Charlemagne, was later given the title of Roman Emperor by the Pope in appreciation for his father Pepin's deeds. This was the first international diplomacy undertaken by a Teutonic people. The Frank Knights also gave the Muslims their first defeat at Tours about 80 miles south of Paris. Good job Franks.

I didn't see Winter's Bone yet, Jason, but I did see road signs all over Wyoming (recent trip) pleading for kids to get off the meth. There's a whole world out there that (thankfully) I'm unacquainted with.

Actually, Pepin was where the Little House in the Big Woods was. The Prairie was in MN - Walnut Grove, in fact. Still, pretty cool, and a beautiful area.

That ain't saying much. Mosquitos are less annoying than Lonewacko. Less whiny, too.

But its on the WEST coast so it wouldn't face the sunrise.

I hope you and Meade had a nice meal at the Harborview Cafe; I always try to eat there when we're at Lake Pepin.

Yes, we did eat there!
