At the Faithful Dog Café....

DSC05793

... you can keep up the conversation while M and I do I-90 miles.

UPDATE: Home, at 3 a.m.  We drove about 980 miles, nearly all on Route 90. We'd turned the heat off for the long weekend, and it was down to 48° indoors. Bracing!

Hope you had a good trip, lousy architecture notwithstanding.

As I said in another post, if you don't have a lot of people coming over for turkey, traveling and seeing what a great country we've got is a great, and very American, way of spending Thanksgiving.

No fights if you get lost on the way back, you two :)

Michael Haz বলেছেন...

If I had an extra day on that trip I'd spend it in Chicago. I love Chicago (except for the pols). It's one of the most beautiful cities in America.

If I had an extra two days on that trip, I'd go north through Michigan and cross into the UP at the Mackinac bridge. Then across the UP to US 51, then south to Madison. I travel to the UP on my motorcycle every summer, and sometimes by car during winter. It's a vast and beautiful place.

If I had an extra three days on that trip, I'd take the northern route, along the north shore of Lake Superior, then through Thunder Bay and south along Superior's western shore in Minnesota, being sure to spend a night in Grand Marais, MN. Then I'd head south on the Great River Road, all the way to Prairie Du Chien, and finally east toward Madison.

If I had time.

reader_iam বলেছেন...

It's nice you were able to travel to be with family at Thanksgiving. Safe and smooth travels to you! We'll shortly be on the road, too, heading in the same basic direction and even weirdly parallel, sorta (you're starting earlier; however, we're starting well west), but we'll be on further-south routes.

Ann Althouse বলেছেন...

Stopping along I-90, I'm able to get "Thruway" wireless access in the parking lot as Meade goes in for coffee.

The trip to Albany was to visit family for Thanksgiving. If it was just a weekend trip to go somewhere, Chicago would have been a more sensible distance with better things to do and see. But family live where they live, and in this case, it was Albany.

traditionalguy বলেছেন...

The idea of Grandmother Althouse is an amazing vision. How many grandchildren are read by their grandmother from to from Bob Dylan lyrics? When the day comes, the little girl will have her own Auntie Mame stories to tell someday. Great weekend so far in a cooling Globe. It's too cold for golf in North Florida. We will catch Ga/Ga Tech tonight and read more books.

I am sitting in the living room of my sister's farmhouse in Iowa, and their dog Winston is barking outside. Somewhere up the road there was a gate or fence failure and cows are out wandering. So the farm family is out rounding up cows and getting everything back under control. I'm still in my robe because it's vacation dammit. We had a late brekkers of wafcakes/panfles...and I'm about to hit the shower.

Northeast Iowa is beautiful. I love it here, and I love the people in this town...and Lord willing if I live long enough to retire, I shall retire to Paradise. (The name of this valley is Paradise Valley. My sister lives in Upper Paradise.)

reader_iam বলেছেন...

That area is pretty, kentuckyliz. We enjoy driving up there from where we live in Iowa, not far away but south.

I'm not familiar with NE Iowa. Spent some time in SE Iowa. How are the two different?

Iowa in the summer - heck, the midwest in the summer - hecky-heck, midwest summer or winter - has some extreme temperatures.

I much prefer the West Coast. Might be nice to retire in Grayland or Tokeland on the Washington Coast. And just use the Internet to see pictures of the sun.

And I'll have to second Michael's UP recommendation.

Weekend jaunt options are endless for me. All within a couple of hours.

The Berkshires, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, The Cape, Newport, Northampton, Williamsburg.

New England is so very fab.

All very fab and dining options are to die for.

And no matter where you go in New England, even in the backwoods you can find another fag couple at a cute and expensive cafe. That is so very comforting. Not that we would acknowledge the other fag couple, it is just good to know they are around.

Thank you.

Titus বলেছেন...

I love Macky Island. So cute.

I do prefer the Canada side though, natch.

That post down there ↓ was very harsh and critical and opinionated, and spot on, and that's why we love you.

I have made a new commitment. No more ordinary breakfasts for me. Henceforth I abjure them. Excoriate and scorn them. Have a look, if you care to, at my third in a series on new American breakfasts, mixed vegetables and seafood with sauce.

Tyrone Slothrop বলেছেন...

We went over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house. By river I mean a usually dry wash known as San Juan Creek and by woods I mean stands of live oak and sycamores that do for woods in this arid place. The sycamores have changed color giving us a pale simulacrum of eastern deciduous forests. Still, it was beautiful. And no black ice.

I'm travelling myself. Virgin America has free wifi at the moment, and I am taking full advantage. I've got a little Samsung netbook with a battery that last ~10 hours, so it should last me the full duration of the flight. Very nice service. I highly recommend it.

(Although they did make me check my bag, at the gate, even though there was plenty of space of the bags. Gah! Still nicer than United or American, though -- those two are absolutely the worst airlines I've ever flown.)

ricpic বলেছেন...

Re: Titus's "fab" New England: Vermont is now so tilted to aging hippies and mahvelous gays that the school districts are all consolidating. Fewer and fewer kids. No future but it's so very fab.

I have always been queasy about movies - films doc - that that have anything with a certain subjects that we all know about from the news..

But at the same time i tell my friends if they see anything i might be interested in ... to do whatever they can to convince me to watch it.

Hard Candy (2005).. I will only say that I'm watching the film again away from the presence of my friend.
I found myself acting up at times and I missed some of the dialogue.

I thought I should react a certain way at certain times and then I would not.

Hopefully you will have some balls and watch the movie for yourselves.

You will not be disappointed..

I was one of the very few here to argue for the Bush enhanced interrogations techniques.. do we have the balls?

Maybe we do. I hope we still do.

As you must have gathered by now.. I liked the film.. I did very much!

We used to drive that stretch fairly regularly. At some point, we developed the idea that we should try to drive across one of those states nonstop. No real reason -- just for fun. The easy one, of course, was Indiana. Ohio was a bit more of a challenge, but possible if we scheduled the gas right. We never bothered trying to cross Pennsylvania nonstop.

Lem Vibe Bandit বলেছেন...

I want to see .. maybe another video of my good friend Meade driving as thought he were driving in NY state ;)

Pennsylvania is an extremely long state that pretty much always got in the way, back when I commuted between Ohio and NJ. When you hit Ohio or NJ you felt you were finally getting somewhere.

The I-90 piece of Pennsylvania however is not bad.

I always stopped on the turnpike at Summerset rest area going East, and the dog and I climbed the hill to the west a few times, by the windshield wiper plant that always had people huddled outside in the snow smoking.

Just short of New Stanton westbound was a Pittsburgh paint test site that was a large field good for exercise going the other way.

Settling into a routine is everything, with Pennsylvania.

Rather than bothering with the drunken ramblings of the tea partier, here's something to discuss.

1. The PacIslander part isn't a "stereotype", it's just a historical association.

2. The black stereotype is far, far, far more rare and outre nowadays than the white stereotype; the latter is a core part of current "liberalism".

3. The Hisp. stereotype is one brought on themselves by not turning out groups like the National Council of La Raza. It's not a stereotype if it's endemic.

OK, I'm going to challenge all of you Althouse commenters, because in the immortal words of Rickey Ricardo, I think you've got some 'splainin' to do.

Remember this post (just about ten days ago) when Obama came home from China without an explicitly public list of concessions from the Chinese leaders on it.

Here are some of your comments then:

Well no kidding, all he got was a crummy t-shirt that has him looking like Chairman Mao. (Fred4Pres)

What a hoot. The Chinese were 10 times smarter than we are. (traditionalguy)

I still can't believe he had the robin's eggs to call himself "America’s first Pacific president." (Irene)

. On the internet, they're calling him "Obama-tan"... like he's a mascot character or something. (Balfegor)

Still, they tried to help him a whole lot in that article. It's actually very amusing. How embarrassing on all counts for the poor NYT. (Darcy)

Wen Jiabao: You throw Taiwan under bus, we forgive debt. Deal?

Barack Obama: Deal.
(ricpic)

Grim for Democrats.

The slack and missing gears in the machine are showing up.
(rhhardin)

"The NYT calls the trip "grim", so that's an Obama stumble."

Yes, because if the NYT calls it "grim," then it must be quite abysmal. I assume kid gloves.
(Ann Althouse)

OK, so let's wait about a week later. As we know, the Chinese are all about appearances, they weren't going to look like they caved or gave any concessions to Obama.

Now here is what has happened in the past 72 hours on two issues that were high on the agenda:

China unilaterally announces a plan to slow growth in carbon emissions under which by 2020 they will be emitting up to 45% less CO2 than they would be without taking this action.

Because of robust projected growth in the Chinese economy the overall emissions will still increase, but by far less than they would have. China in the past has claimed that they are a 'developing' nation and therefore should be exempt from any carbon emissions standards. During the Bush administration the issue of carbon emissions wasn't even on the agenda during these kinds of meetings but the timing of this announcement within a week after Obama left China makes it pretty obvious that he scored a success on the topic of carbon emissions, even though his hosts waited for a week to announce it so it wouldn't look like a concession.

But that was overshadowed less than 24 hours later by an even more significant change from China. They joined with the rest of the members of the U.N. security council and voted to back tough language on the Iranian nuclear program.

Bush tried to get the Chinese to get tougher on Iran for years without success, as the Chinese have no particular quarrel with Iran and prefer to just keep doing business with them.

Yes, folks, you (and the NYT and some other media outlets) jumped to an obvious (and wrong) conclusion that because Obama didn't leave China waving a Neville Chamberlain-like piece of paper with concessions on it, that the trip was a failure and he didn't get anything.

He got two big wins (unless you are going to stand there and tell me that the Chinese are suddenly in the business of doing things because 'it's the right thing to do.') Yeah, right.

Sort of like conservatives who claim that the stimulus is a failure which has not saved any jobs.

If Obama baked a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving, conservatives would be the ones who would open the oven thirty seconds after he put it in the oven and claim that the pie had failed to bake.

BTW, when Althouse said this: I'm not inclined to "debunk" them. I'm not Palin's defender.

The translation is: I know I probably can't debunk them.

And when she said this: I will look at the items and say what I think

The translation is: But I'm gonna try and spin them and play some lawyer tricks on them.

But when she said this: I'll look at a couple more items from Sullivan's list tonight...and say what I think....

And then we never heard from her again about that, it meant: I looked at a couple more items and I could do nothing with them to make Andrew Sullivan look bad, so I'm gonna hope everyone forgets I promised to do this.

YOUR HOMEWORK IS OVERDUE, PROFESSOR!

We could've had Usama bin Laden at Tora Bora: Osama bin Laden was unquestionably within reach of U.S. troops in the mountains of Tora Bora when American military leaders made the crucial and costly decision not to pursue the terrorist leader with massive force, a Senate report says.

The report asserts that the failure to kill or capture bin Laden at his most vulnerable in December 2001 has had lasting consequences beyond the fate of one man.

Way to go, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gen. Franks!

The report states categorically that bin Laden was hiding in Tora Bora when the U.S. had the means to mount a rapid assault with several thousand troops at least. It says that a review of existing literature, unclassified government records and interviews with central participants "removes any lingering doubts and makes it clear that Osama bin Laden was within our grasp at Tora Bora."

Fewer than 100 U.S. commandos
On or about Dec. 16, 2001, bin Laden and bodyguards "walked unmolested out of Tora Bora and disappeared into Pakistan's unregulated tribal area," where he is still believed to be based, the report says.

It sure did look like we were gonna get bin Laden at Tora Bora. But our leaders - Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gen. Franks - let him go!!

Shame on them! Total incompetence!

LoafingOaf বলেছেন...

Or, did they let bin Laden go on purpose? Hmmm...

AlphaLiberal বলেছেন...

Here's another report on how Bush and Cheney allowed Obama to escape.

Bush and Cheney allowed this mass murderer to go free. Why, I don't know. But this guy killed thousands of Americans and others, they had him within their grasp and they let him go.

Republicans will close ranks to defend Bush and Cheney. In doing so, they show us that they have more loyalty to their party than their country.

But maybe some conservative will criticize Bush - Cheney over this. I'm not holding my breath.

AlphaLiberal বলেছেন...

"The vast array of American military power, from sniper teams to the most mobile divisions of the Marine Corps and the Army, was kept on the sidelines," the report said. .

The team that allowed this to happen should hide from the public debate in disgrace.

Big Mike বলেছেন...

@Alpha, at that point they had nothing they could hold him on except maybe that Rezko thing.

Oh! You meant Osama. Yeah, I get the two of them confused, too. Easy mistake to make.

The report, if NPR and MSNBC have quoted it accurately is simply wrong. The problem was three-fold: General Franks chose to station himself at CENTCOM HQ in Tampa, presumably because the golfing and water skiing were better than in Afghanistan; Rumsfeld didnt' make him relocate to the theater; and poor coordination between the Special Forces troops in Tora Bora and Franks caused the latter to not have a blocking force in place between the mountain range and Pakistan.

If you're going to blame the guys at the top then surely you won't mind if we blame everything that has gone wrong this past year, and in the next three on Osama, I mean Obama>
