Thoughts about death: There was nothing poetic or tragic about Teddy's death. He was able to achieve the full measure of his ambitions and act out the full squalor of his character flaws. There was nothing left undone: no bright promise unfulfilled nor surly deficit obscured. Of all the Kennedy brothers he was the only one who did not die a sudden, violent death.....Ringo Starr will probably be the last surviving Beadle, and Teddy was the only brother to fret about old age. God keeps his own books.... I connected with JFK and, especially, Bobby in a most primitive way. I know Camelot was a Hollywood set, but their deaths were real and wrenching. I am grateful for the banality of Teddy's life and the ordinary pain of his passing. There no great beauty, no great lesson, no great anything to be extracted from his wastrel life, and that's a comfort.

JFK's presidency was not considered successful until after his unfortunate death; foreign policy debacle with Premier K.; failure to pass the Civil rights act; encouraging the USSR to expand, resulting in the Cuban Missile Crisis, for which he and RFK did deserve good marks. RFK became a civil rights advocate leading up to his WH run in 1968 and he died too soon also. Of course, after those two untimely deaths, most else was forgotten.

Teddie was a failure in many endeavors until his marriage to Vicki. Unfortunately, from a Constitutional point of view, Teddie's Socialist streak is more damning to the existence of this Union than anything any other person has ever done to the US.

I remember that in the 1960s the Kennedy brothers turned on the Mafia just to one up Daddy, but the Mafia won. We watched the funeral...no interruptions for 3 hours on cable TV, which was impressive. It was a good funeral with sincere speeches by Teddy's 2 sons and others, after the Eucharist was complete. The camera panned to the crowd onto Obama and Michelle frequently. Obama gave his speech too using the right words. Maybe it was the presence of a sincere love and peace among the Christians following the Eucharist, but in contrast Obama's persona during his speech came across as that of an outsider who was hateful. Obama's problem is that this carefully disguised hatred for white capitalists cannot be seen as "normal politics" anymore. He is exposed, and therefore he is in real trouble, because his ONLY claim to our trust had been his loving smile.

1960, Jean Shepherd does a Bob and Ray style interview, mp3.

As modern as today.

Are those black bugs eating red tendrils, or red worms eating black berries?
